Welcome to National Watermelon Day!

Watermelon is the perfect fruit to enjoy on August 3rd. It is also National Watermelon Day. Enjoyed by many, it is a favorite at summertime events such as picnics and fairs. Watermelon is 92% water, which is why it is so refreshing.

Watermelon is a vine-like flowering plant originally from southern Africa. Its fruit, which is also called watermelon, is a special kind referred to by botanists as a pepo, a berry which has a thick rind (exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp). Pepos are derived from an inferior ovary and are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae. The watermelon fruit, loosely considered a type of melon – although not in the genus Cucumis – has a smooth exterior rind (usually green with dark green stripes or yellow spots) and a juicy, sweet interior flesh (usually deep red to pink, but sometimes orange, yellow, or white).

Syracuse football preseason player file No. 4: Dontae Strickland (DO; Mettus)

Dontae Strickland

Position: Running back
Year: Sophomore
Ht: 5-11
Wt: 196

One of the biggest jumps made from the end of 2015 depth chart to the post-spring one in April was by Dontae Strickland. When new head coach Dino Babers took over, Strickland’s position didn’t even exist anymore — the hybrid — but now he’s slotted as the team’s starting running back going into his second season.

Strickland carried the ball just 21 times for 81 yards and a touchdown last year. Several of those carries were on reverses. He also caught nine passes for 137 yards and two scores, including a long of 62 yards. In the spring game, he had 84 yards on 12 carries.

“He’ll make plays, very smart individual,” Babers said after the spring game. “I think he’s going to be a heck of a football player for us in some combination with somebody else back there.”

Syracuse Football: Anonymous ACC Coaches Share Thoughts About Orange With Athlon (TNIAAM; Keeley)

Let's hear what other ACC coaches have to say about us... anonymously.

The annual "anonymous coaches talk about say things about team X" thing is a time-honored college football tradition. Most of the time, it doesn't really mean anything. But sometimes you get some interesting nuggets out of it.

This year seems to be a mix of both.

Athlon Sports chatted with anonymous ACC coaches recently, and many spoke their minds about the conference's various teams, including the Syracuse Orange. We analyze (very much not anonymously) the relevant quotes below.

"I really can’t say I know much about them because they’re going to change everything."

Accurate, though I know a site that's been telling you an awful lot about them since Dino Babers was hired.

"Obviously Dino Babers is coming in there and they’re going to run the Baylor offense. I think they’re just short across the board talent-wise, but obviously the most important thing will be identifying their quarterback."

Guys, we're not talking about Baylor anymore... can't really deny the knock on talent, however. Very few Orange players received votes for the All-ACC team this year. And realistically, wide receiver Steve Ishmael is the only player that could probably find himself on the postseason team based on the number he should put up in this offense.

Former Syracuse football star Dwight Freeney signs with Atlanta Falcons (PS; AP)

The Atlanta Falcons attempted to address their persistent pass-rush problem on Tuesday by agreeing to terms on a deal with free-agent linebacker Dwight Freeney.

Freeney, 36, hasn't had a double-digit sack total since 2010. Even so, his eight sacks in 11 games with Arizona in 2015 would have easily led Atlanta. He'll give the Falcons the established pass-rush leader the team has lacked since John Abraham's final season with Atlanta in 2012.

Freeney played for Syracuse University from 1998 to 2001, and his 34 career sacks puts him second on the school's career list behind Tim Green. Freeney's 17.5 sacks his senior year is the school's single-season record.

The Falcons were last in the league with only 19 sacks last season. They have ranked no higher than 28th in sacks since 2012.

Syracuse Football Recruiting: Orange Decline Commitment from 3-Star RB Damone Drew
(TNIAAM; Cassillo)

SU's recruiting class nearly grew to 18 this weekend.

We've been talking about the Syracuse Orange's football recruiting momentum of late. But for every kid that does commit, there could be another one-time target that could potentially fall by the wayside. This is not unique to SU, but is the case for every school. It's the unfortunate side of these things, but a fair one considering how involved the process is today.

On Sunday night, three-star Virginia (Stafford) running back Damone Drew announced his commitment to Syracuse on Twitter, but was informed by the staff (running backs coach Mike Hart) that he no longer had a commit-able offer. Syracuse.com's Stephen Bailey followed up with Drew to get more details. He shared:

"It got declined. Just because we haven't been in contact for a while. So it just got passed up."

"The only time they were pushing hard was the time I visited."

Syracuse currently has one running back in the fold -- Michigan product Allen Stritzinger -- though that will only make four scholarship backs on the roster come 2017. George Morris II departs, while Stritzinger would join Dontae Strickland, Jordan Fredericks and Moe Neal in the backfield. Bailey believes the team could take another one or two players at that position this cycle. Which could mean some good news down the line (potentially) for Drew.

Wegmans eyes more stores in North Carolina: Could Florida be next? (PS; Tampone)

Wegmans is planning a major expansion in North Carolina, with several potential new stores already in the works.

The Rochester-based chain announced its first store in the state earlier this year. Much of the company's focus in North Carolina is on the Raleigh-Durham area, home to a number of major universities, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

Wegmans' first North Carolina store is planned for Cary, just outside Raleigh. The firm has already filed paperwork to pursue a second store in that area, the D&C said.

Wegmans wouldn't talk specifics yet, but said it had identified multiple sites in the Raleigh-Durham area where it could open stores.

One retail expert believes a foothold in North Carolina could lead to an even bigger push into the Southeast, according to the D&C.

"Wegmans could double the current size of its corporate sales just by filling out the region between Virginia, the Carolinas, into Tennessee and Georgia and north Florida," Burt Flickinger, a retail analyst with the Strategic Resource Group, told the paper.

National Watermelon day! Should be a national holiday! Most favorite thing to eat in the summer for me - a lifelong favorite!

The art of picking the perfect watermelon by Chakka:

Wegmans (Tops last year) has been selling primo watermelon all summer (can't go wrong too much here but look for red circle in label tend to be better so far)..look for mostly but not overly yellow along entire bottom plus must be heavy (usually more ripe with more water content) compared to others same size. Knocking on them is like sniffing a cork from wine at restaurant - dead giveaway you don't know what you are doing! Don't forget to wash on outside before cutting!

SYRACUSE

The competition: Sophomore Eric Dungey vs. redshirt junior Austin Wilson and freshman Rex Culpepper

The status: This is probably more of a formality than anything. New head coach Dino Babers isn’t tipping his hand, but he admits that he has one QB who is well ahead of the pack. It’s a safe bet that it’s Dungey, who looked good when healthy last year and could post big numbers in Babers’ up-tempo offense in 2016.

Best bet: It’s Dungey’s job to lose.
