Welcome to "According to Hoyle" Day

"According to Hoyle" Day is a day to honor Edmond Hoyle who died on this day in 1769. In 1741, he instructed people how to play the game of whist, a 18th and 19th century card game. Needing a standard set of rules for the game he wrote A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist. He was encouraged to publish it since it was so well received by his students. He published several versions of the book adding rules for other games such as chess and backgammon. The phrase "according to Hoyle" was used to describe the correct rules or procedures in any activity or game.

FSU Football Schedule Preview: Syracuse (fsunews.com; Flores)

If they did it once, they could do it again.

Throughout the past few years that Florida State and Syracuse matched up against each other, the Seminoles have oftentimes found themselves as the victors by overwhelmingly large margins. For their fourth consecutive matchup, the ’Noles and the Orange will face off in the Carrier Dome prior to rivalry weekend.

But much has changed for Syracuse from last year’s season in which they finished 2-6 in the ACC. After relieving former head coach Scott Shafer of his coaching duties at the end of last season, Syracuse brought in former Bowling Green head coach, Dino Babers. What Babers brings to the table for Syracuse is his reputation and his ability to make significant improvements on offense. By instilling his offensive fundamentals he developed under Art Briles during his time at Baylor into a team that ranked 122 out of 128 in total offense last season, Babers is sure to uplift Syracuse and make great strides with the team within his first year in the head coaching spot.

“I don't like to put a ceiling or walls around us. I have no idea how we're going to do this year,” Dino Babers said at ACC Kickoff. “I can tell you this, we're going to prepare like we're going to win every single football game and I expect the effort on the football field to be exactly that way.”

But winning every single football game will be quite the task considering the schedule that Syracuse has ahead.

Of their twelve games, the Orange are given tough matchups in games against Louisville, USF, Notre Dame, Clemson and Florida State. Assuming losses in all of those games and wins in the rest of the season, Syracuse is sure to find themselves in a bowl game; a feat they haven’t been able to accomplish since their 2013 season.

Offense — 2016 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

With Syracuse less than a week away from kickoff, The Juice Online will be doing its annual week-long football preview. Check back in tomorrow as Jim Stechschulte previews the defense.

Dino Babers’ full throttle offense will go into effect at the Carrier Dome and, even at less than its best, it should be a significant upgrade over what Syracuse has done for the last decade. The 2012 team, which finished the year 8-5, averaged 30 points per game and owns the school record of 6,188 total yards in 13 games (476.0 per game). While the win total likely will not be matched for a couple years, the marks in points and yards per game are fair targets for Babers’ first season.

Sophomore Eric Dungey, who was thrust into playing early last year due to Terrel Hunt’s injury, then lost part of his own season due to injury, is the likely starter at quarterback. Dungey had a hand in 16 touchdowns last season and his ability to both throw and run should be on full display in the new scheme, especially after connecting on just under 82 percent of his passes in the spring game. Zack Mahoney, who has shown more as a runner than a passer in games to date, is the likely back-up after throwing seven scoring passes over parts of eight games as a walk-on last season. Redshirt junior Austin Wilson and freshman Rex Culpepper will complete the depth chart at quarterback.

A pair of sophomores are in line to spearhead the Orange run attack. Jordan Fredericks, who led SU with just over 600 yards at 5.7 yards per carry, and Dontae Strickland, who saw time as a running back and H-back in the old offense, should be carrying the load. Fredericks showed big play ability last season, ripping off a 75-yard touchdown at NC State. Strickland displayed his versatility and as his own knack for making things happen as a freshman, including turning a screen pass into a 62-yard burst at Florida State.

High school football notebook: Penn Hills QB Tarrant throws for 530 yards (post-gazette.com; White)

...
Peterman said Tarrant could have more big passing games and the main reason is Penn Hills’ group of receivers.

Julian Major is a junior who had seven catches for 143 yards against Canada Prep. Major was recently offered a scholarship by Wisconsin and also holds offers from Syracuse, Boston College and Kentucky, among others. Cam Jeffries and 6-6 junior Davion Stephens are two other talented receivers, along with tight end Rick Squires.

“I love running the football,” said Peterman. “But to be honest, with what we have on the outside this year at receiver, we have to get them the ball.”

F-M set to introduce SU Football commit Eric Coley in 2016 (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

Fayetteville-Manlius is trending upward ahead of the 2016 high school football season, especially after adding a future Syracuse University student-athlete.

Eric Coley will star for the Hornets this season. He arrives at F-M from the state of Michigan. The reason for his arrival to the Central New York area is because of his father's new job.

Vinson Reynolds, the new SU defensive line coach under Dino Babers, took the job with the Orange when Babers was assembling his staff. Coley then committed to the Orange upon his arrival to Syracuse.

The Stand, 10 Years Later: An Oral History - HawkeyeNation (hawkeyenation.com; Smith)

Ten years ago this September, Iowa football pulled off a defensive stop for the ages — a series known simply as “The Stand.”

Leading Syracuse 20-13 in the second overtime, the Hawkeyes kept the Orange out of the end zone on eight straight plays inside the five-yard-line — silencing the raucous Carrier Dome crowd and escaping with a narrow victory.

It was a game few expected to be close in the first place. The Orange entered the contest riding a 10-game losing streak, while Iowa was ranked 14th in the AP Poll after routing Montana 41-7 in the season opener. But the game took a turn right before kickoff, as Iowa quarterback Drew Tate was ruled out with a strained abdominal muscle.

For the first time in 25 games, a new signal caller would make the start for the Hawkeyes — fifth-year senior Jason Manson who was making his first collegiate start. While the Iowa offense struggled to move the football, Norm Parker’s defense rose to the occasion — putting forth an unforgettable effort to squash the Orange’s hopes of pulling off an upset.

HawkeyeNation.com took a look back at “The Stand” through the eyes of the people on the field and in the press box on Sept. 9, 2006.

Mike Humpal, linebacker: I was a junior that year and it was my first season as a starter. I remember the Carrier Dome being really loud and really hot. It was a tough environment to play in, no doubt — kind of like playing inside of a tin can.

Mike Klinkenborg, linebacker: It was hot as hell. There was no airflow.

Broncos' decision on Riley Dixon expected soon; Steelers waive Julian Whigham (PS; Carlson)

Riley Dixon punted eight times for the Denver Broncos in a 17-9 preseason win over the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday night, recording net yardage of 40.9 yards.

It's unclear if that performance is good enough for Dixon to make the Broncos. However it's been plenty good enough to turn him into leverage.

According to a report from Denver radio host Vic Lombardi, the Broncos asked veteran punter Britton Colquitt to restructure his contract for the second straight year in response to Dixon's presence on the roster.

Colquitt expects he or Dixon to get cut tomorrow or Monday. Says they're not likely to carry two punters into final preseason game.

— Vic Lombardi (@VicLombardi) August 28, 2016

Spoke to Britton Colquitt just now. He knew he wasn't going to play tonight. Broncos have asked him to restructure his contract.

— Vic Lombardi (@VicLombardi) August 28, 2016
Colquitt finished tenth in the NFL in net punting last year (40.8) and 15th in average (46.3).

His status as one of the league's highest-paid punters is largely what prompted Denver to draft Dixon in the seventh round. Colquitt is scheduled to make $3.25 million this season in base salary. Dixon would make $450,000.

Video: Bruce Springsteen invites 3-year-old girl from Buffalo on stage to sing (PS; Canedo)

Jeff Ross has been to 10 Bruce Springsteen concerts, but his latest just might be the most memorable.

Ross, of Buffalo, attended the show Thursday with his wife and 3-year-old daughter Emily at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey, the Buffalo News reports. Emily brought a hand-made sign that asked if she could join Springsteen on stage for her favorite song, "Waitin' on a Sunny Day." It's the song Ross has sung for his daughter to put her to sleep since she was just a few days old.

The family had tickets right in front of the stage. During the show, guitarist "Little Steve" Van Zandt spotted Emily singing and pointer her out to Springsteen, Ross told the Buffalo News.

From the Buffalo News:

"So Bruce came over during 'Sherry Darling' and held her hand and was singing right to her," Jeff said. "A few songs later Bruce is out doing the song requests, and he notices Emily's sign and takes it. But before he takes it, he leans over and says to me, 'Can she really do this? Does she know the words?' And I said, 'Yes, but Bruce, she's only 3!'

"So he leans over again and says, 'Well, before it's past her bedtime let's do it. I'll play that one after the next song, so have her ready.' Sure enough, he starts singing and before the end of the song he pulls her up. I did not know what to expect.

"She was so relaxed and Bruce was amazing and held her hand through the whole thing. Right on cue, she nailed it. The place went wild. When she was done singing he whispered in her ear and he said, 'OK, yell "Hit it, E Street Band!" ' And she did. The place went nuts."
