Welcome to Yom Kipper!

Yom Kippur (/jɔːm ˈkɪpər, joʊm, jɒm/;[2]Hebrew: יוֹם כִּיפּוּר, IPA: [ˈjom kiˈpuʁ], or יום הכיפורים), also known as the Day of Atonement, is the most solemn and second only to the Sabbath as the holiest day of the year in Judaism.[3] Its central themes areatonement and repentance. Jewish people traditionally observe this holy day with an approximate 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services.

Virginia Tech, Syracuse’s once and never again rival
(TNIAAM; Keeley)

Virginia Tech joined the Big East Conference as a football member starting with the 1992 season until they left in 2003. In that time, Syracuse and VT would battle to a 6-6 stalemateas conference foes (SU leads the all-time series 9-8).

From the get-go, the two schools settled into a predictable pattern. Syracuse would win the games played in the Syracuse. Virginia Tech would win the games played in Blacksburg. That’s how it went every single time except for a weird universe breakdown in 2000-2001 when the Hokies finally won in the Carrier Dome and the Orange(men) finally won in Lane Stadium. They made sure to course-correct the natural order of things for two seasons before the Hokies left for the ACC.

I know a lot of people think Michael Vick invented Virginia Tech football but they forget that the Hokies actually had a damn good program before he got there. They won the Big East in 1995 and 1996, going to the Fiesta and Sugar Bowls in the process. This coincided with Syracuse’s rise back to the top of the conference thanks to Marvin Harrison, Donovan McNabb, et al. Both schools were finishing at or near the top of the league and games between the two became hugely important.

This all culminated in 1998 when the No. 16 Hokies came to the Dome with the Big East title on the line. 49,336 packed the stadium to see McNabb hit Stephen Brominski in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown as time expired, setting off what we hoped would be the first in many battles between the two schools for the conference crown.

Then, a couple things happened. Michael Vick chose VT over Syracuse. The SU program fell off. And Miami remembered it was Miami.

Grading Syracuse football midway through Dino Babers' 1st season (DO; Staff)

Syracuse is 2-4 and has lost four of its last five games. First-year head coach Dino Babers has repeatedly said that this season will be a process as his players acclimate to the new schemes SU is running.

Syracuse football beat writers Tomer Langer, Chris Libonati and Jon Mettus grade the Orange and award superlatives midway through the season.

Syracuse midseason play-calling breakdown (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

With Dino Babers’s arrival as the new head coach of the Syracuse Orange, fans were pretty excited about the impact of his up-tempo attack. While the points haven’t necessarily come in bunches yet, the team’s obviously moving with a new urgency and racking up quite a few yards so far.

Now that we’re six games in, how has the offense performed so far? Are we still pretty excited? Anything we’re concerned about going forward? Diving into the breakdown below, consider this an extension of the weekly play-calling posts. Hopefully, it’s a way to better identify week-to-week trends and greater first-half-of-the-season narratives.

Run vs. pass distribution

With a banged-up offensive line and no true "power" back to run the offense’s dive plays, SU’s run game takes a major backseat to the passing attack through six games. Babers’s offense is run-heavy, FYI, so this isn’t what we’re typically supposed to see. You’ll also notice these numbers don’t add up to the overall rushing vs. passing totals on the year because these are "called" runs and passes. So anytime Eric Dungey is under pressure and then takes off is a called pass play. Notably, the two games where the ratio has been closest (USF, Wake Forest) have produced the most puzzling final results.

Called Runs 29 33 47 23 27 31 190 38%

Jury rejects Native Americans' claims against state police over 1997 protest on I-81 (PS; O'Brien)

A federal jury today rejected the claims of 12 Native Americans that state troopers violated their rights in quelling a 1997 protest over taxes.

The nine-person jury ruled in the state's favor on all of the plaintiffs' claims that their constitutional rights were violated when state police arrested 24 people on May 18, 1997, alongside Interstate-81 on the Onondaga Nation.

The jury reached its verdict after three full days of deliberating.

The lead plaintiff, Andrew Jones, complained after the verdict was announced about 4:45 p.m. that U.S. District Judge Frederick Scullin treated him and the other plaintiffs unfairly.

The judge wouldn't allow the plaintiffs to put in the evidence they wanted, Jones said. A video of troopers using force to arrest protesters was admitted into evidence, but without sound, Jones said. Other videos didn't get into evidence, he said.

"It was a slapstick comedy hour video," he said. "The jury had no evidence to rule in our favor."

His brother, Ronald Jones, told a lawyer for one of the troopers that the plaintiffs would appeal.

"We'll be back," Ronald Jones said. "We always lose the first case. We have to come back to win."

The 12 plaintiffs were among 98 people who sued 51 state troopers in 1998 over the state police handling of the tax protest. Seventy-six of the plaintiffs settled with the state in June for $2.7 million.

Hokies notes: Ford is 'fine,' Bud's freedom to operate and playing in a dome

1. Isaiah Ford's ankle sounds like it's fine.

The star receiver sprained his left ankle in the third quarter against North Carolina, understandably causing some consternation among the Hokies fan base, especially when he didn't re-enter in the fourth quarter.

Fuente eased some of those concerns after the game, saying it was a precautionary move to hold Ford out. He said more Monday.

“He looked fine yesterday," Fuente said. "And I’m not going to go into a lot of details on that stuff."

Fuente dislikes talking about injuries, so there wasn't an update on Tim Settle's knee, although he walked off the field under his own power yesterday after the game.
