Welcome to National Christmas Tree Day!

With Christmas right around the corner, it’s time to celebrate one of the most iconic symbols of the holiday season. It really is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, folks! Dec. 8 is National Christmas Tree Day in the U.S.A, an annual event created by the Queen of Holidays.

Picking out the perfect tree, stuffing it in the trunk or tying it to the roof of the car, dragging it inside the house and decorating it with tinsel, ornaments and lights, has been a beloved American tradition for years. But the question remains – real or artificial? About 33 million real trees and 9.5 million faux trees are sold in the United States each year.

Live Christmas trees have been sold in America since the 1850s. While only two percent of Americans head to the local woods or forest to chop down a tree, most of today's Christmas trees are grown on farms. The best selling trees are Blue spruce, Scotch pine, White pine, Noble fir, Fraser fir, Douglas fir and Balsam fir.

Spartans after JUCO star

MSU has offered a scholarship to Marquise Blair of Dodge City Community College. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound prospect played outside linebacker for Dodge City, but many see him as a strong safety at the next level. Blair is expected to take an official visit to MSU this weekend.

Blair is originally from Wooster, Ohio, located southwest of Akron. He starred for coach Doug Haas at Wooster high, and signed with Syracuse in 2015. The NCAA flagged his transcript and he was forced to go the junior college route to gain Division 1 eligibility. Other schools actively recruiting Blair include Nebraska, Iowa State, Purdue, UCF and Louisville.

Taggart to Oregon: Was USF series timing right or wrong? (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

News broke this morning that USF Bulls Coach Willie Taggart would be leaving Tampa, Fla. for the Oregon Ducks’ job. Just 15 months ago, the Bulls’ head man was on the hot seat. Then he went and beat a 3-1 Syracuse team 45-24 in 2015. Since then, the team has gone 16-4 and was knocking on the door of the program’s ceiling as a perennial 10-win contender in the AAC.

The question now, for Syracuse, is whether the two-game series from 2015-16 was timed poorly or correctly.

I’ve been a long-time proponent of easier scheduling for the Orange, obviously. And while that started as a call to avoid playing two or three Power Five teams per year in non-conference play, it extended to a plea to avoid AAC teams as well.

The AAC is the country’s top “Group of Five” conference and has proven itself as a breeding ground for top coaching talent. If you schedule one of the AAC’s better programs — Houston, USF, UCF, East Carolina (most years), or a host of others — you’re in the no-win situation of being an underdog but still being expected to win. The simple narrative of college football says a P5 school should beat a G5 school, even if it’s clear the G5 school is a better team.

For the past two years, the Bulls have been a better team than Syracuse, and it’s showed on the scoreboard. The combined score of the games? 90-44.

So while the initial thought may be that SU timed this series wrong (if they insisted on having it at all), that also assumes that USF is done competing at his high of a level.

Clemson, Florida State dominate AP All-ACC team selections (newstimes.com; McCreary)

Clemson and Florida State dominated The Associated PressAll-Atlantic Coast Conference football team.

The ACC champion Tigers placed nine players on the first team while four Seminoles were unanimous picks — running back Dalvin Cook, offensive tackle Rod Johnson, defensive end DeMarcus Walker and cornerback Tarvarus McFadden.

The other unanimous selections were Pittsburgh guard Dorian Johnson, Clemson receiver Mike Williams and Virginia linebacker Micah Kiser.

A panel of 14 writers and broadcasters from the nine ACC states voted Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson the offensive player of the year and Walker the defensive player of the year.

Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois and Virginia Tech quarterback Jerod Evans shared newcomer of the year honors, and Virginia Tech's Justin Fuente is the coach of the year.
