Forecasting the 2017 ACC Football Schedule (tomahawknation.com; Blunt)

As is the case in late December, ACC fans sit around and twiddle their thumbs in anticipation of the Atlantic Coast Conference finally announcing the following season’s schedule for league participants. This week, Florida State made final touches to their out of conference schedule for 2017 by adding FCS opponent Delaware State to round out games with Louisiana Monroe, Alabama, and in state rival Florida.

While we sit and wait, I took the opportunity to draw up what we may see released come late January:

Notes about the schedule:

-Blue indicates a conference game. Red is non-confirmed date for OOC opponent

-In week 3 (week of September 16th), 10 of the 14 ACC teams are already locked into a game. The 4 who are not scheduled as of now are Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, and Miami.

Miami does not play Louisville or Clemson in 2017. It does not seem likely the ACC would put the ‘Noles and ‘Canes in a week 3 game, so we are going to assume Miami gets an early bye week. That leaves us with the three Atlantic powers. Clemson will be coming off a week 2 out of conference tilt with Auburn, thereby causing a dilemma for the ACC and the Tigers: back-to-back showdowns while breaking in a new quarterback, or having their bye week come in week 3, forcing Clemson to play their final 10 (or 11) games without a break.

For this exercise we’ll say the ACC gives Clemson the bye, while scheduling Louisville vs. Florida State in week 3, as they did this season.

-Per usual, many ACC teams have scheduled ambitiously, perhaps to their detriment. Syracuse is taking a pay day for a game in Baton Rogue against LSU; Virginia Tech has set up a week 1 neutral site game with West Virginia; Florida State plays Alabama in Atlanta; Clemson hosts Auburn; Georgia Tech gets Tennessee on Labor Day in Atlanta; NC State clashes with South Carolina; as well as the annual end of season ACC vs. SEC rivalries that close out the schedule.

Syracuse football 2016 report card: Linebackers (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

While the Syracuse Orange went 4-8 for the second consecutive year, it was far from the same 4-8 the team saw in its final season under Scott Shafer. In Dino Babers’s first campaign, SU’s offense looked far more capable and the team looked more competitive overall. They also dealt with a boatload of injuries and a difficult schedule — both of which scuttled chances to improve in the win column this year.

Still, after what was an admittedly fun season, it’s worth looking back to see which units did well and which failed to, and how that impacted the Orange’s success or lack thereof.

We continue with...

Linebackers
Transitioning to the Tampa-2 was supposed to be a challenge for Syracuse’s linebackers this year. The position had largely been focused on generating pressure under Scott Shafer, and the new scheme called for them to be more of a factor in pass coverage instead.

While the pass coverage aspect of it all still has some ways to go, 2016 reaffirmed that Syracuse’s linebackers are the lifeblood of this defense. The veteran group showed improvement week to week, disrupted passing lanes, and also managed to embrace its old style of play at the same time, too.

Both Parris Bennett (110) and Zaire Franklin (101) tallied 100 total tackles for the first time in their respective careers, finding ways to get in on stops in all parts of the field. With the defensive line struggling to make a push up front, and the young secondary finding itself out of position a lot, it put the onus on the linebackers to shut down opposing offenses. While the yardage and scoring of opponents may not reflect much in the way of the linebackers being successful there, they were the only defensive position group to find a modicum of success week-in and week-out.

Is 4th time the charm? Accused Destiny knifepoint carjacker gets his way after all (PS; Dowty)

Accused carjacker Richard Darwish spent two court appearances in the last two days complaining about his court-appointed lawyer.

Ben Coffin was the third lawyer assigned to the case after Darwish filed grievances against the previous two ones. He vowed to do the same thing to Coffin.

But County Court Judge Thomas J. Miller wasn't planning to budge. He said Coffin had done nothing wrong -- despite Darwish's gripes about accessibility and strategy -- and ordered both men to work it out.

Darwish is facing eight charges in connection with the Aug. 24 knifepoint robbery of a woman and two children -- ages 12 and 14 -- in the Destiny USA parking lot. He took the woman's car and fled before being caught later. Darwish also faces three other cases, and has a total of two dozen charges pending against him.

Among other things, Coffin had ordered a mental health exam for his client, angering Darwish.

Miller ordered both "gentlemen" to get in a room and figure out their differences. But as a last-ditch question, the judge asked Darwish if there was any lawyer he would be willing to work with.
