Holy-Innocents-Day-December-28-1024x512.jpg

Welcome to Holy Innocents Day!

Holy Innocents Day is observed annually on December 28th.

Holy Innocents Day (also referred to as Childermas) commemorates the massacre of male children at Bethlehem by King Herod’s order (Matthew 2:16). Also known as the Feast of the Holy Innocents, this day is observed in the Western churches on December 28 and Eastern churches on December 29. These children are considered martyrs, Saints of God, by the Church.

HOW TO OBSERVE

On this day it is custom to give the youngest child in the household the power to rule the day. From what to eat, where to go and what to do, the youngest is in charge. In Mexico, it is a day for children to play practical jokes and pranks on their elders. Use #HolyInnocentsDay to post on social media.

LB Nadarius Fagan Signs with Orange (cuse.com)

Three-star linebacker Nadarius Fagan has signed his financial aid agreement with Syracuse University and is expected to join the Orange football team in January, head coach Dino Babers announced on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Rated the 43rd-best outside linebacker in the Class of 2017 by 247Sports.com, Fagan starred at Miami's Southridge High School. He recorded 119 tackles, one sack and one interception in 2016 to help the Spartans to a 12-2 record and their first state championship since 1993. As a junior, Fagan led Miami-Dade County with 141 tackles, including 83 solo stops.

Fagan is the Orange's third signee this recruiting cycle, joining junior college All-Americans linebacker Ryan Guthrie and tight end Ravian Pierce.

Syracuse went 4-8 in Babers' first season as head coach. The Orange set or tied more than 30 offensive records in 2016 and defeated ACC Coastal Division champ Virginia Tech for the program's first win against a ranked opponent since 2012.

SU football 2016 report card: Defensive backs (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

While the Syracuse Orange went 4-8 for the second consecutive year, it was far from the same 4-8 the team saw in its final season under Scott Shafer. In Dino Babers’s first campaign, SU’s offense looked far more capable and the team looked more competitive overall. They also dealt with a boatload of injuries and a difficult schedule — both of which scuttled chances to improve in the win column this year.

Still, after what was an admittedly fun season, it’s worth looking back to see which units did well and which failed to, and how that impacted the Orange’s success or lack thereof.

We continue with...

Defensive Backs
This... went poorly all year. You don’t need to be told that yet again, necessarily. Even a former member of the Syracuse secondary (Julian Whigham) told you how poorly things went all season. Below, we’ll detail a little bit of what went wrong, then talk about the glimmers of things that went reasonably well — which yes, there were a few of those too.

For starters, the Syracuse secondary had very little ability to stop opposing passing attacks. SU had the 116th-ranked passing defense in the country, allowing nearly 277 yards through the air per game. Worse than that, just two teams allowed more yards per attempt than the Orange. At a miserable 8.9, just Florida Atlantic and Rice were worse than SU at stopping regular gains through the air.

After 8 Decades And Countless Pastrami Sandwiches, New York's Carnegie Deli Folds (npr.org; Rose)

One of the most famous delicatessens in New York will slice its last sandwich this week.

The Carnegie Deli opened in 1937 on Seventh Avenue across from Carnegie Hall. But it didn't' achieve notoriety until decades later — around the time that director Woody Allen filmed a table full of off-duty comedians there in his movie, Broadway Danny Rose.

There's still a "Woody Allen" sandwich on the menu at the Carnegie Deli: half pastrami, half corned beef. But the real star is that pastrami.

"People love my pastrami so much, it's like a human being," says owner Marian Harper. "It's overwhelming to me."

Harper inherited the Carnegie Deli from her father, Milton Parker, who took over the restaurant with partner Leo Steiner in 1976. Back then, the Carnegie was just another deli in the theater district. Then a reviewer from The New York Times listed its pastrami among the best in the city. Ever since, Harper says, it's been tough for customers to get a table.
