Welcome to Pepper Pot Day!

Today is Pepper Pot Day! Pepper pot is a thick spicy soup first created on December 29, 1777. During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army experienced an exceptionally harsh winter in Valley Forge. The soldiers were low on food because the farmers in the area sold all their supplies to the British Army for cash rather than the weak currency that the Continental soldiers could offer.

Christopher Ludwick, the baker general of the Continental Army, gathered whatever food he could find to feed the frail soldiers. The chef was able to find scraps of tripe, meat, and some peppercorn. He mixed the ingredients together with some other seasonings and created the hot spicy soup we now know as pepper pot. It became known as "the soup that won the war."

Syracuse football 2016 report card: Special teams (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

While the Syracuse Orange went 4-8 for the second consecutive year, it was far from the same 4-8 the team saw in its final season under Scott Shafer. In Dino Babers’s first campaign, SU’s offense looked far more capable and the team looked more competitive overall. They also dealt with a boatload of injuries and a difficult schedule — both of which scuttled chances to improve in the win column this year.

Still, after what was an admittedly fun season, it’s worth looking back to see which units did well and which failed to, and how that impacted the Orange’s success or lack thereof.

We conclude with...

Special Teams
Last year’s special teams unit was Syracuse’s best weapon in a season where they failed to move the ball much or stop the ball well either. Riley Dixon was one of the country’s best punters, while Cole Murphy spent much of the year being a pretty accurate placekicker. Special teams quality control assistant Steve Gregory seemed to improve coverage teams quite a bit, and Brisly Estime managed to take back two kicks for touchdowns during an All-America-type campaign.

One season later, a whole lot changed for SU.

Redshirt freshman Sterling Hofrichter replaced Dixon, and while he couldn’t match ALL of the former Orange punter’s prowess as a runner, passer and kicker, he still put in a serviceable effort in 2016. He was top-30 in the country in punting average (42.71) despite having more attempts than all but three other players. He also avoided touchbacks, which proved beneficial to the defense when they’d actually take advantage of it.

Former Syracuse Football Head Coach Doug Marrone Got It Done (Insidetheloudhouse.com; Edsen Jr)

It seems that former Syracuse football head coach Doug Marrone may be on his way back into the NFL head coaching picture after his latest victory.
Many would say that former Syracuse football head coach Doug Marrone made a poor choice. Not going from Central New York to Buffalo. But from opting out of his deal for greener pastures that never materialized.

So he bided his time as an assistant for the Jacksonville Jaguars. In a move where he was taking a demotion, but apparently a wise investment for the veteran coach. Now when he was handed an opportunity to coach the last two weeks of the season just to see what happens.

Before he took over this team was a cumulative 2-12 without much hope for anything. Seemingly nothing to play for, yet, Marrone motivated this team to a momentous 38-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

UConn hires former Syracuse assistant Randy Edsall as head coach for second time (report) (PS; Carlson)

Connecticut hired Randy Edsall to lead its football program for the second time on Wednesday, according to various media reports. Syracuse is scheduled to host the Huskies in 2018.

Edsall coached UConn for 12 years from 1999 to 2010, closing his tenure with four consecutive bowl appearances. He helped the Huskies transition from I-AA and left for Maryland after a Fiesta Bowl appearance with UConn in 2010.

He famously didn't fly back with the team after the biggest game in UConn football history, instead heading immediately for a job interview with the Terrapins.

Edsall was fired six games into the 2015 season by Maryland, his fifth year with the Terrapins. UConn's program has deteriorated without him, first under Paul Pasqualoni and then Bob Diaco.

Lake Effect Snow Warnings and Watches for Central New York: Up to a foot in Syracuse through Friday (PS; Monteuil)

Syracuse- After a couple weeks off, the lake effect snow machine is set to crank up once again, with one to two feet of snow expected between Thursday and Friday for parts of Central New York.

This lake effect will be set up by a storm system that will bring a widespread snow to Central New York during the day on Thursday. This system will produce a few inches of wet snow before it blows up into a nor'easter over New England.

While the nor'easter will be well east of Central New York, gusty, cold winds wrapping around the back side of that winter storm will set off heavy lake effect snow. The lake effect will start later Thursday afternoon and evening and persist through the day on Friday.

Lake effect will first develop due east of Lake Ontario. Lake Effect Snow Warnings are in place for Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties for as much as 22" of snow over the Tug Hill.

Thursday night, the winds will turn a bit more northerly, sending the lake effect band south. Lake Effect Snow Watches, which will probably be upgraded to warnings before too long, are in place for Onondaga, Madison and Oneida counties.
