Welcome to Drinking Straw Day!

Marvin Chester Stone, straw inventor
Wikipedia encyclopedia tells us "Marvin Chester Stone was the inventor of the modern drinking straw." "He lived in Washington DC most of his life, until his death in 1898."

"The first drinking straws were made of dry, hollow, rye grass." "Stone, who worked in a factory that made paper cigarette holders, did not like this design because it made beverages taste like grass." "As an alternative, on January 3, 1888, he got a piece of paper from his factory." "He wrapped it around a pencil." "He coated it with wax so it would not leak or get waterlogged."

Remember when SU turned down a Rose Bowl invite? (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Today’s the annual Rose Bowl Game, which usually happens on January 1 each year, but occasionally ends up on January 2. A few days ago, SB Nation wrote up why that happens, so give that a read.

While the Syracuse Orange are nowhere near the Rose Bowl, Pasadena or any bowl game this year, they nearly made the Rose Bowl one time. In 1915 (technically 1916, following the 1915 season), they turned down the trip because they’d already visited the West Coast that year.

The 9-1-2 Orangemen had the country’s best defense (allowed just 1.3 points per game) while barnstorming around much of the Ivy League and portions of the West Coast that year. For some reason, they spent three consecutive weeks near the end of the season on the other side of the country. SU tied Montana 6-6, and then the following week, shut out Oregon State 28-0 on a neutral field in Portland. They’d shut out Occidental in Los Angeles the following week as well.

Because of those three games, it was a tough ask for Syracuse to get back on the road — BY TRAIN -- and trek back west just a couple weeks after returning (especially since they’d just been to L.A. on December 6).

As chronicled by Scott Pitoniak in “100 Things Syracuse Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die,” then-Chancellor James Roscoe Day shot down the Rose Bowl invite because the athletic budget had been depleted by the three-game West Coast trip in November and December.

Syracuse had another Rose Bowl chance shot down in 1922 as well, though that story didn’t seem to present the same level of intrigue as the one above. Still, read Pitoniak’s book if you want the scoop on that situation as well.

Rhule to add 3 offensive assistants to Baylor staff (wacotrib.com; Werner)

Baylor coach Matt Rhule is expected to add three more offensive coaches to his staff including Mississippi’s Matt Lubick, San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach Jeff Nixon and Temple University offensive coach George DeLeone.

FootballScoop.com reported the hiring of Lubick, Nixon and DeLeone, but they haven’t yet been announced by Baylor.

Lubick will be Baylor’s co-offensive coordinator after recently accepting a job at Mississippi following four seasons at Oregon. Mississippi coach Hugh Freeze confirmed Baylor’s hiring of Lubick to the Tupelo Daily News.

Lubick served as Oregon’s offensive coordinator during the 2016 season after three seasons as receivers coach and passing game coordinator. The Ducks ran a spread offense that ranked among the most productive in the country, and was similar to the style Art Briles ran at Baylor.

Both DeLeone and Nixon have ties to Rhule at Temple. Rhule was Temple’s coach the last four years and was previously an assistant at the school from 2006-12. DeLeone was offensive coordinator at Temple from 2006-07 while Nixon coached running backs at Temple in 2006.

DeLeone is a 68-year-old veteran coach who will serve as Baylor’s offensive line coach. He was the offensive line coach under Rhule at Temple in 2016.

LA Rams requesting permission to interview former Syracuse, Bills coach Doug Marrone (PS; Talbot)

Former Buffalo Bills and Syracuse Orange head coach Doug Marrone is drawing interest from the Los Angeles Rams.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday that the Rams are requesting permission to interview Marrone for their head coaching vacancy.

Marrone served as the Jacksonville Jaguars' interim head coach for the team's final two games. Jacksonville defeated the Tennessee Titans 38-17 and fell to the Indianapolis Colts 24-20 in Marrone's two games as head coach. Marrone was hired by the Jaguars in 2015 to serve as their offensive line coach/assistant head coach.

In addition to his two games in Jacksonville, Marrone went 15-17 in two seasons with the Bills. His best season came in 2014 when he coached Buffalo to a 9-7 finish.

Marrone also coached the Syracuse Orange to a 25-25 record from 2009-2012. He went 8-5 in his final season with Syracuse.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Jaguars also have some interest in retaining Marrone. According to Rapoport, one former Super Bowl winning coach advised Jaguars owner Shad Khan to promote Marrone to head coach.

Update: Verizon FiOS says Fox Syracuse owner demanded 93 percent increase in fees (PS; Herbert)

A contract dispute between Verizon FiOS and the owner of Fox Syracuse continues to heat up.

An agreement between Bristlecone Broadcasting and Verizon FiOS expired Saturday night, leaving some Central New Yorkers without four television channels. FiOS subscribers have been unable to watch WSYT Fox 68 (channels 8 SD and 508 HD on FiOS); WNYS My43 (MyNet channels 7 SD and 507 HD); WSYT ZUUS Country channel 465 SD, a nationwide network that broadcasts country music videos; or WNYS GetTV channel 480 SD since Jan. 1.

Verizon FiOS told customers early Sunday that the television channels were pulled "despite our best efforts to secure a fair and reasonable new agreement."

Brian Brady, president and CEO of Bristlecone, told syracuse.com that Verizon is lying to its customers.

"We negotiated with them, they walked away from the table. They didn't make another offer, they just said 'we're done,'" he told syracuse.com. Brady added that no signals were pulled; Verizon stopped transmitting Fox and MyNet when the contract expired because it would've been a copyright violation, he said.

A representative for Verizon FiOS tells syracuse.com that Bristlecone, which has owned Fox Syracuse since 2013, was demanding a 93 percent increase in carriage fees -- "which is obviously completely unreasonable."
