Early ACC Football Predictions for 2017 (athlonsports.com; Lassan)

The ACC continued its upward trajectory after the conference claimed its second national championship in four seasons after Clemson’s victory over Alabama on Jan. 9. Thanks to outstanding coaching hires in recent years, the ACC has made progress in catching the Big Ten and SEC at the top of the conference power rankings. Could this league earn another national championship next fall? Florida State is the ACC’s top returning team for 2017, but Clemson and Louisville aren’t far behind. The Tigers must replace quarterback Deshaun Watson, while the Seminoles lose running back Dalvin Cook early to the next level. Lamar Jackson should be able to carry the Cardinals to another standout season, but the reigning Heisman winner needs more help from his offensive line to lift Louisville into the ACC title game. On the Coastal side, it’s a tight battle at the top. Miami and Virginia Tech are the early favorites, but Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Pitt aren’t far behind.

It’s never too early to think about predictions or rankings for the 2017 college football season. With that in mind, Athlon provides its early power rankings for the ACC for 2017:

Atlantic Division

1. Florida State

The ACC make it two in a row in national championships next season? Considering the roster talent coach Jimbo Fisher has in place, the Seminoles should be one of the favorites to win it all in 2017. Quarterback Deondre Francois returns after starting all 13 games and throwing for 3,350 yards and 20 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2016. Running back Dalvin Cook left early for the NFL, but the arrival of five-star freshman Cam Akers and the return of Jacques Patrick will keep the ground game performing at a high level. Left tackle Roderick Johnson and receiver Travis Rudolph departed early for the NFL. After a rough start, Florida State’s defense was much better in the second half of the 2016 season. Some of the unit’s struggles have to be attributed to a talented slate of quarterbacks faced at the start of the year, along with the season-ending knee injury to safety Derwin James. All signs point to a full recovery for James. He's a huge addition to a secondary that already returns rising star Tarvarus McFadden at cornerback. End DeMarcus Walker is a big loss off the edge, but Josh Sweat is primed for a standout 2017 season, while tackle Derrick Nnadi is a force on the interior. Florida State’s path to a playoff spot won’t be easy. The Seminoles have to play at Clemson and Florida, while catching Louisville and Miami at home. And of course, there’s the huge showdown against Alabama in Week 1 in Atlanta

ACC Football has taken the crown from the SEC | FOX Sports (foxsports.com; Sickmon)

The SEC has long been considered college football’s best conference, and for years perhaps it was. The ACC is poised to take that honor as college football’s premiere conference.

I said it earlier this season that the SEC was in for a fall from grace. I got a great deal of snarkiness from SEC fans for that statement, but dagnabit, I was right. No, I am not just referring to Clemson’s dramatic victory in the final seconds of the national title game this year, although that was all kinds of awesome. I am referring to the conferences as a whole, and how the ACC has been quietly winning important games all season.

It started early in 2016’s season with Florida State’s mind-blowing comeback against a loaded Ole Miss team. During bowl season, ACC teams finished with an 8–3 record. In addition, the conference managed two fundamental New Year’s Six wins by Clemson (with a blowout of Ohio State) and by Florida State (over No. 6 Michigan). For the first time in a decade, the ACC finished with a better record than the SEC, who finished 6-6.

While bowl records may not always be the best barometer for measuring the strength of a conference, consider this. During regular season play, the ACC racked up a 9-6 record against other Power 5 teams. And for you naysayers out there, this has not just been a recent phenomenon. In the past 5 years, the ACC has amassed a 7–3 record in BCS or New Year’s Six bowls. The SEC has only managed a 5–7 record. No SEC team other than Alabama finished the season with less than four losses.

The ACC has been building quality programs and hiring excellent coaches. As a result, the conference now boasts the best defenses in the country, two recent Heisman Trophy winners, and two recent national titles. Will the conference be able to maintain dominance? If recent recruiting efforts are any indicator, yes. And I say it’s about time.

NCAA passes on major changes to football recruiting (TNIAAM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange lost a pretty significant football commit last week and there was probably some hope that a change in football recruiting could help avoid this in the future. Unfortunately, the NCAA decided not to consider a proposed June signing date, which could have helped a school like Syracuse avoid having commits poached by bigger-name programs. There will be a vote in April to consider a December signing period, which is a small consolation at this point.

It should come as no surprise that many coaches were against the June period because of the potential impacts. If that signing date had moved forward, schools would have to lock in on their top targets and wouldn’t find it as easy to move on to options B, C, and D if needed.

As we hear about trying to “level the playing field,” it’s disappointing that more coaches aren’t pushing for a change. The signing period remaining later benefits the bigger schools who can continue to sit and watch as prospects grow and develop. Then they can jump in late with offers as they learn which of their players are turning pro. It’s a cycle that makes it hard for schools to consistently break into the top 10 and makes it easier for those in that position to stay there.

Cell tower hidden in plain sight: Check out this CNY "pine tree" (photos) (PS; Doran)

It looks a bit different than other pine trees - and that's because it is.

This "monopine" spotted off Route 5 in DeWitt is actually a cell phone tower camouflaged as a pine tree. Known as a "monopine" stealth tower, it's located on the grounds of the White House Offices LLC at 7030 E. Genesee St., next to Lyndon Corners Golf Course.

The 100-foot Verizon Wireless cell tower has taken three weeks to install, said Dave Macauli, project manager with Southern Tier Towers LLC, a subcontractor to Lanz Construction. Work should be completed by Friday, he said.

This monopine, which actually comes as a kit with all the required parts, has 134 branches. The branches hide the lines and antennas while still allowing radio frequencies to flow through them. The cell tower itself is actually is painted to resemble tree bark, Macauli said.

Cell phone towers are sometimes concealed as pine trees, palm trees or even flagpoles, Macauli said. In other cases, towers are hidden as a building, a window or a penthouse on top of a building, he said.

Southern Tier Towers has completed four monopines in New York state in the past year, Macauli said, as more people choose to conceal cell phone towers in creative ways.
