Welcome to Loomis Day!

The History of Loomis Day
As with many things, the history of Loomis Day is actually the history of a man, and an event, and how they changed the world to come. Mahlon Loomis was a dentist in the 1800’s who had an idea that had nothing to do with teeth. He knew about the electrical properties of the atmosphere, and like Tesla had conceived of an idea to transmit electricity through the air to a distant location. His idea was, perhaps, off a bit. He thought to ‘charge’ a layer of the atmosphere to create an electrical conduit between two metal towers set high on mountaintops (Sound familiar?).

Orange Watch: New early signing period huge change for Syracuse football recruiting - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: The NCAA’s approval earlier this month of an early signing period for college football recruiting will have a profound change on how coaches recruit, is likely to keep the strong programs strong, and has permanently deluded the important date of the first Wednesday in February, the traditional National Letter of Intent Signing Day.

Way back in 1990 we began working with publishers of college sports newspapers, most published weekly during the August-May school year sports calendar, helping them provide news updates about the school they covered via audiotext phone messages in which the consumer paid a per minute fee to hear news updates in the “pre-Internet era” of 1990-1995, and way before social media was even a blip on the radar.

The most important information these publishers dispensed was football recruiting news, which highly rated recruits were considering which schools and it always culminated with the highly anticipated NLOI signing day in which anxious fans called in multiple times that day to make sure every recruit that was expected to enroll had indeed signed and faxed in his commitment.

Once we took the telephone concept and brought it online with the start of in 1998, and subsequently once every major sports media network either merged online services or created their own by the mid-2000s, the market became saturated with coverage eventually resulting in live TV throughout signing day, other special programming, and once social media, specifically Facebook and then Twitter arrived by 2010, each player had their own personal platform to orchestrate the news of their recruitment.

ACC Football Rx: Worst Coach Hires (accfootballfx.com)

Here are the coaches hired by current ACC teams and/or Notre Dame which nearly ruined their football programs...

12. Charlie Weis, Notre Dame
Hired: November 2004
Fired: November 2009

...
8. Greg Robinson, Syracuse
Hired: January 2005
Fired: November 2008
Record at Syracuse: 5-37* (.119)
Career head coaching record: 5-37* (.119)
Syracuse was once one of the proudest college football programs in the country. The Orange were 11-0 under Ben Schwartzwalder in 1959, winning the national championship. Ernie Davis won the 1961 Heisman Trophy while donning the famous No. 44 also worn by NFL Hall of Famers Jim Brown, Floyd Little and Larry Csonka. Dick MacPherson led the Orange to an 11-0-1 record and a No. 4 final ranking in 1987, and Paul Pasqualoni posted a 107-59-1 record and led the program to nine bowl games in 14 seasons as head coach from 1991-2004.

However, Pasqualoni fell out of favor with the Syracuse faithful after three straight non-winning seasons from 2002-04, and he was fired and replaced with Greg Robinson. A longtime defensive coordinator in both the NFL and major college football, Robinson joined the Orange after a brief stint at Texas in 2004.

In his first season at Syracuse, Robinson’s squad finished 1-10, setting a school record for losses in a season. Though the team improved to 4-8 the following season, a 2-10 record in 2007 gave Robinson the only two double-digit losing seasons in history. He was fired with two games left to play in his fourth year at the helm, which he finished with a record of 3-9.

*Though Syracuse won 10 games in his four seasons at Syracuse, the NCAA stripped the team’s five victories in 2005-06, giving Robinson an official record of 5-37.

Ranking the 5 best Quarterbacks in the ACC for 2017 (scacchoops.com; JFann)

Well here we go. It’s time to start ranking the best players in the ACC for the 2017 season. As usual we hope you enjoy the rankings.

1) Lamar Jackson, Louisville

Louisville’s Lamar Jackson is the returning Heisman Trophy winner. That makes it no surprise that he’s the top returning QB in the ACC. At times last year Jackson was unstoppable putting up over 5100 yards of total offense, with 3,543 yards through the air and 1,571 yards on the ground. Jackson may be college football’s most dazzling athlete to play the QB position since Michael Vick. Jackson is a little raw as a passer, but his athleticism is undeniable.

If his offensive line can improve, Jackson could make another run at the Heisman.

2) Deondre Francois, Florida State

If there was a tougher quarterback in college football last year, than Deondre Francois of Florida State than I didn’t see him. Last year often saw Francois as a red-shirt Freshman under constant pressure, but that didn’t stop him from leading the Noles to a 10 win season that included an Orange Bowl win. He threw for 3,350 yards and 20 TDs.

Francois can show some inaccuracy as a passer, but I expect that to improve this season. He’s capable of leading FSU to the national title.

3) Eric Dungey, Syracuse

In a conference that had astonishing depth last year at the QB position, you may have forget about the very talented Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey. Dungey was a good fit for Dino Babers quick strike offense. With a completion rate of nearly 65%, Dungey showed accuracy throwing for 2,679 yards. Think about the stats he would have last season if hadn’t missed 3 full games to end the season.

Another member of Pitt athletic department moves on to Oregon State (post-gazette.com; Meyer)

Pitt deputy athletic director for internal affairs Dan Bartholomae has left the university to become the deputy athletic director for capital projects and internal operations at Oregon State.

With the move, Bartholomae will join former Panthers athletic director Scott Barnes, who left for the same position with the Beavers in February. Barnes promoted Bartholomae in April 2016 to the role he most recently occupied as part of a wholesale restructuring of Pitt's athletic department.

Though the two most recent moves are largely tied to Barnes' departure, Bartholomae's exit means that Pitt has lost the three highest-ranking members of its athletic department in the past four months. Deputy athletic director for external affairs Julio Freire resigned from the school in April and was replaced by Christian Spears, who was previously the deputy athletic director at Eastern Michigan under new Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke.

In his role, Bartholomae, a Pitt graduate who spent the past 15 years in the university's athletic department in various roles, was tasked with overseeing sports administration, facilities operations and planning, event management, sports medicine, financial services and athlete development. Additionally, he was the sport supervisor for football and men's basketball.

Chick-fil-A 'coming soon' sign spotted: Is this the next Upstate NY location? (PS; Axelson)

Chick-fil-A could be adding a third Upstate New York location, if this sign is to be believed.

WKBW-TV's Matt Bove spotted the sign reading "Coming Soon Chick-fil-A" on Saunders Settlement Road in the village of Sanborn in Niagara County.
The sign looks official enough, with the Chick-fil-A logo and "Home of the Original Chicken Sandwich" slogan, but up until now, the chain had only mentioned that it was actively pursuing unspecified sites in the Buffalo area.

WKBW has reached out for confirmation from the fast food chain.

If true, the Sanborn Chick-fil-A would be the third location for the eagerly anticipated fast food chain in Upstate New York.

A location has already been approved in the Town of Greece, near Rochester, and another location has been proposed for a retail complex in Halfmoon, near Albany.

The company is also reportedly looking at unspecified locations in Central New York.
