On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s crack troops.

Orange Offer ’18 QB Ben Bryant | Otto's Grove (.com; Kelly)
If Lyons Township High School sounds familiar to you, there’s a good reason. That’s the high school that produced Syracuse backup QB Zack Mahoney. This upcoming year will be the final season for Mahoney, which would make it awfully fitting for the Orange to bring in another signal caller from La Grange, Illinois – Ben Bryant, a former Wisconsin commit who made headlines earlier this year.
Bryant made headlines in a pretty unfortunate way, when he tweeted that he’d received an offer from Georgia. However, he was already committed to Wisconsin at the time, and the Badgers apparently didn’t appreciate him getting excited about the SEC offer, quickly pulling his scholarship and putting him back on the market.
Now, with an offer in hand from Syracuse, the 6-foot-3 QB who is rated as a 3-star prospect could wind up as part of the Orange class of 2018. Right now Chance Amie remains a priority for the Orange, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Syracuse target two signal callers to help build depth at the position. There are four scholarship QBs on the roster. Once Mahoney leaves, that knocks the number down to three, and it wouldn’t be a bad thing to have five guys who can sling it for ideal depth at the position – particularly given that Eric Dungey has yet to make it through a season healthy.
In addition to Georgia and Syracuse, Bryant holds offers from West Virginia, Western Michigan, Cincinnati, Temple, Bowling Green, and Central Michigan. It’ll be interesting to watch his recruitment develop, and to see if he makes his way to the Syracuse campus. If and when he does, however, the Orange couldn’t hope for a better salesman than Mahoney – a kid from Bryant’s hometown who is one of the most respected guys on the Orange roster.

Item: With Monday’s announcement that Syracuse will begin play in the 2018 season on the road against a Mid American conference team in Western Michigan, the first time that will occur since opening at Akron to begin the 2010 season under Doug Marrone, the extended non-conference portion of the schedule continues to take shape into the next decade. Those annual four games, and in some seasons Notre Dame takes that spot including next in ’18 at South Bend, are comprised of one part “name” Power 5 program, one-two parts consisting of Group of 5 conference members, and one part FCS team annually booked in the Dome.
There are currently 65 teams (including Notre Dame) that make up the five Power 5 conferences, or exactly half of the number of FBS programs.
The other 65 are either independent or part of the five conferences making up the Group of 5, with the top team from those five leagues eligible for at least a spot in the six major bowl games depending on the College Football Playoff rotation (it was Western Michigan in the Cotton Bowl last season), and for an undefeated season here or there, perhaps even a spot in the four team CFP.
Until perhaps another round of conference realignment somewhere down the road, and there’s recurring talk that the Big 12 may not even be around into the 2020s with plums Texas, Oklahoma, Ok. State and TCU plucked for football and Kansas for basketball by a combination of the Pac 12, Big Ten, and even perhaps the ACC, the Orange are stuck in the Atlantic Division with Clemson and Florida State at the top, Louisville and N.C. State jousting for position, and SU aligned with the similar profiles of B.C. and Wake Forest.
It’s hard to gain traction with those built in six games each season unless there’s a continued upward trend of talent committing in the future recruiting cycles, starting with this year’s debut of the December early signing period; and the good news is so far from all indications that’s exactly where recruiting is headed in the Dino Babers regime.

Western Michigan football to host Syracuse in 2018 (mlive.com; Olsen)
Western Michigan is adding a first-time opponent to its 2018 season in a home-and-home deal with Syracuse, the athletic department announced Monday.
The Broncos will host the Orange at Waldo Stadium on Sept. 1, 2018, and will travel to the Carrier Dome to play Sept. 21, 2019.
Although he was part of the Syracuse coaching staff from 2013-15 as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, WMU coach Tim Lester said talks had already been going on to set up a deal before he became coach.
"Any time we bring an ACC or Big Ten team into Waldo it is a great opportunity for our team and our town to showcase itself," Lester said. "It is exciting for everyone."
The Broncos will host the Chippewas at 8 p.m. on ESPN2 in a Wednesday night game on Nov. 1
Since 2010, Western Michigan has opened each season against Big Ten opponents -- 2010 at Michigan State, 2011 at Michigan, 2012 at Illinois, 2013 at Michigan State, 2014 at Purdue, 2015 home against Michigan State and 2016 at Northwestern.
This season, the Broncos travel to California to take on USC on Sept. 2.
In addition to Lester, assistant coaches Tim Daoust and Jake Moreland also spent time coaching at Syracuse in the past and director of operations Drew Robinson spent time there as well.

Could former Syracuse football star, Dwight Freeney be heading back to the NFL? What more does he have left in the tank? We discuss.
While Dwight Freeney hasn’t donned a Syracuse football uniform in over 16 years, he’s still the pride and joy of the Orange. Freeney has played for four different organizations. He’s accumulated over 120 career sacks. Plus he has a Super Bowl ring to boot.
The one thing he isn’t is satisfied.
“Winning the Super Bowl and leaving would feel amazing to me,'” Freeney said to NFL.com. “The best year I ever experienced was the year that we won the Super Bowl. Wouldn’t it be great to leave like Jerome Bettis, Ray Lewis or someone in that type of situation?”
The 37-year old has that fire in his eyes. Despite being a future Pro Football Hall of Famer, he still has goals to attain. He’s not the player he used to be. Freeney hasn’t posted a double-digit sack season since 2010, but he remains effective.
Nowadays his role is exclusively as a third down pass rusher, but that’s a premium in the NFL. You want quarterbacks who can throw the ball and guys who can sack the quarterback.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for the lawn show. Weather.com shows a 90 percent chance of showers and temperatures in the mid-50s at that time.
Bring a poncho, hat, rain boots or anything else you need to stay comfortable. Layers may also be helpful at this show. Montreuil says temperatures may drop and spend much of the day near or below 55 degrees.
Avoid a muddy bottom
Arrive early to grab seats close to the front. While music fans can enjoy fair-weather concerts on beach towels or picnic blankets, we recommend bringing lawn chairs for this one to avoid mud.
Umbrellas yes, coolers no
No backpacks or coolers will be permitted. Large umbrellas, rain gear and pop-up canopies will be allowed as long as guests set them up at the back of the grounds, to avoid ruining the view of other concertgoers.
