Syracuse football coach Dino Babers has sights set on ACC elite as league play begins (PS; Mink)

One of the biggest benefits for Dino Babers in his first year rebuilding the Syracuse football program was going through the ACC schedule for the first time.

As he embarks on his second spin through the conference, that experience will guide him on formulating game plans week-to-week but it will also give him more evidence of what he needs to reach his ultimate, long-term goal of winning an ACC championship.

"The big thing is recruiting," Babers said ahead of Syracuse's ACC opener this weekend at North Carolina State. "You look around, look at the teams you have to beat, you look at what they have in what areas and it really curves your thinking when you’re looking at recruits.

"Can this young man -- he’s a really good player -- can he get big enough to do the things that we need him to do against the teams that we need to beat."

To extrapolate further, there is clearly an effort by this staff to target physically mature prospects that, with proper training, can hold up against the players deployed by the two mammoths of the ACC Atlantic Division -- Clemson and Florida State.

When Syracuse faces both later in the season, you will see exceptional play along the defensive front and freakishly fluid athletes in space and on the perimeter.

Or, as quarterback Eric Dungey put it, having seen ACC competition for two years: "Real athletic players, that’s what the constant is."

Babers is building his program with an eye toward toppling those giants. Getting there will take time, but the coach across the field Saturday afternoon offers proof it can happen. N.C. State nearly knocked off would-be national champion Clemson last season and last week won at Florida State.

Syracuse Football: 5 questions with NC State pxp voice Gary Hahn (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

To get a better understanding of Syracuse football’s next opponent, we sitdown with NC State play-by-play voice Gary Hahn on ITLH.

The Syracuse football team was close in Baton Rouge but couldn’t get the job done. They’ll try to pick up the pieces on another road trip this time to Raleigh, North Carolina. It won’t be easy against a NC State team that upset the No. 12 ranked Florida State Seminoles last Saturday.

It also happens to be the Orange’s ACC opener in Week 5 to kick off the second quarter of their season. Head coach of the Orange Dino Babers has been glowing in his praise of the Wolfpack in conversations with the media.

This front seven will be one of the best the Cuse faces all season long on Saturday afternoon. A few mistakes the Orange made last week that they’ll have to correct include: lack of running game, giving away points, dropping passes, etc.

If one or two of those things change, SU is undefeated right now and possibly ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time in 16 years. While before the season started no one would’ve considered NC State as a skin game, it’d be a nice one to have. Without further adieu time to breakdown the Wolfpack.

Pack looks to move to 4-1 against Syracuse (technicianonline.com; Sinopoli)

The NC State football team returns to Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday to face the Syracuse Orange in its second conference matchup of the season.

The Wolfpack (3-1, 1-0 ACC) is riding high from the biggest win in head coach Dave Doeren’s tenure, last week’s upset of No. 12 Florida State, 27-21; as a result, the matchup against the Orange (2-2, 0-0 ACC) could be considered a “trap game” for the Pack.

In the 2016 season, NC State was narrowly defeated by the eventual national champion Clemson Tigers in Death Valley, 24-17. After a stellar performance, the Pack laid an egg against Louisville, resulting in a 54-13 drubbing.

This time around, the Wolfpack’s opponent isn’t nearly as formidable as the Cardinals; however, Syracuse isn’t a team to scoff at.

Quarterback Eric Dungey is at the helm of the Orange offense, leading the team in passing and rushing yards. Dungey has thrown for 1,052 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. He currently ranks second in the ACC in pass attempts, airing it out to star wide receiver Steve Ishmael.

Ishmael has hauled in 45 receptions for 512 yards and a touchdown. He ranks first and second in the ACC in catches and receiving yards, respectively. He has started the 2017 season on a roll with four-straight 100-yard games. Furthermore, Ishmael also added to the Biletnikoff Award watch list on Tuesday, given to the nation’s best receiver regardless of position. Ishmael could be a headache for the injury-riddled NC State secondary.

Syracuse's Stoop Kitchen to reopen with 2 bars, bakery and new dining room (photos) (PS; Weaver)

The upstairs of the new Stoop Kitchen will look familiar to many who, more than a decade ago, went to the Armory Square bar for live music and Tequila and comfort food.

But don't rush up the stairs so fast. Stoop owner Eric Alderman and Abigail Henson, the Stoop's new "chief inspiration officer," have added a bakery, another bar and a large dining area to the first floor.

"We have tried to leave everything as close to what it was up here," Alderman says of the former Stoop's second floor, "because we made such enormous changes downstairs."

Those changes include a downstairs bar, a retail space stocked with fresh-baked breads and pastries, and a new dining area - complete with clam-shell leather banquettes and a hand-made community table. The new Stoop, from top to bottom, will seat more than 100 people for dinner.

And this time, those dinners may include rabbit tacos, freekeh mac and cheese, hot and sour eggplant, and coffee-roasted beets.

It all opens as The Stoop Kitchen at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 4.

Upstairs, the look remains rustic and very Stoop-like, with the stage and bar in the front, the hand-written Stoop story on the wall, and the dining with patio in the back. In between sits an expanded kitchen that's open to diners. A perch that overlooks the kitchen is called the chef's counter; diners who sit there can watch the entire cooking staff at work.

I don't get mad at guys picking the favorite - but the scores are pretty low. They are good on the DL - but their secondary is suspect. Erv and Ish might eat them alive. Also, Syracuse.com with no mention that NC State has never faced a ED led team...

I dont think anyone really knows how good NC st is yet..

They lost to an avg at best SC team that struggled with Mizzu and lost to LTech and Kentucky

They struggled with Marshall, who struggled with Miamo O and Kent st

They beat Furman

They beat FSU, thats the nice win, a team coming off 3 weeks without a game, and a QB who had no experience. caught them at the right time at home, got the 1 Turnover and were slightly outgained. Dont think they win that game if its 2-3 weeks from now.

Maybe they drill us, but I dont think that says NC st is really good either.

I think the turnover battle is going to be critical on Sat. NCST is really good at forcing and recovering turnovers. We need to hold on to the ball and not throw picks.

If coleman cant go at close to 100% dont play him. ankles need time and one tweak could put him back 2-3-4 more weeks.

Pitt game is a must win,
