Welcome to Carl Sagan Day!

Carl Sagan Day celebrates the life, teachings, and legacy of Carl Sagan, who was born on this day in 1934, and who is known for his many contributions to science. The day was created in 2009 by the Center For Inquiry in Fort Lauderdale, as well Florida Atheists and Secular Humanists (FLASH), and other groups. Events have been held in Florida, but also have spread around the world. Some examples of events that have taken place are star parties—where people come together and view the sky, astronomy lectures, science fairs, and workshops.

Syracuse is much improved from a year ago, but Wake Forest is, too dailyorange.com; Gutirrez)

Hurricane Matthew brought rain and wind to last year’s Syracuse-Wake Forest game, combining with WFU’s defense that disrupted Syracuse’s offense, holding SU to only nine points in Winston-Salem. Syracuse lost, 28-9, but enters Saturday’s game as a team that’s improved over the past year. SU players have repeatedly said that bowl eligibility has never felt this close with three games to play.

With two more wins, the Orange (4-5, 2-3 Atlantic Coast) can ensure it will play its first bowl game in four years. In its way sits a road game at Louisville, a surging Boston College team at the end of the month and a home game this Saturday against Wake Forest (5-4, 2-3), which is only one victory away from ensuring bowl eligibility of its own.

While Syracuse has made strides this season, WFU is “playing better in every single way,” head coach Dave Clawson said Wednesday afternoon on the ACC coaches’ teleconference.

Syracuse Football: First look at Orange vs Wake Forest on Saturday (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Here’s our first look at the next Syracuse football game against Wake Forest. What are the Orange in store for in the loud house?
According to the ESPN FPI Analytics, this game for the Syracuse football squad is truly a 50-50 game:

  • SU is a near 52% favorite heading into this pivotal ACC tilt
  • The Orange are currently one point betting favorites
  • SU is 4-5
  • Demon Deacons are 5-4
Although the overall records don’t tell the whole story. Wake Forest has lost four out of their last five games. While the Orange have lost two in a row, won two in a row, and before that lost another two in a row.

They’re very streaky and if the pattern continues, the Orange should be in for another big victory in the Carrier Dome on Saturday.

Here are some more fun facts from this series:

  • These two squads have played six times in their history.
  • The Orange hold the edge four to two.

FSU football film review: Offense vs. Syracuse (tomahawknation.com; Moyer)

Welcome back to our weekly film review sessions of Florida State’s 2017 season. Every play broken down, with video and analysis.

As always, this content is best viewed on a computer or tablet, not on a phone.

Coming into the game, we knew that Cam Akers would need to be a focal point of the offense. After all, receiver depth was questionable and Jacques Patrick was sidelined with his knee injury.

Well, there’s no question Akers provided a spark after finishing with 199 yards and two touchdowns while averaging nine yards per carry. Akers actually eclipsed 200 yards in this game, but a late tackle for loss brought him back down to just shy of that mark.

Notre Dame-Miami matchup headlines ACC's Week 11 (usatoday.com; AP)

Things to watch in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Week 11:

GAME OF THE WEEK: No. 3 Notre Dame at No. 7 Miami. A pair of College Football Playoff hopefuls meet in Miami to renew the rivalry that was a must-see matchup in the late 1980s with Jimmy Johnson and Lou Holtz on the sidelines. The Hurricanes (8-0) have their best ranking since they also reached No. 7 in 2013, and are on the verge of clinching their first ACC championship game berth . The Irish (8-1) haven't been ranked this high since 2012, when they climbed to No. 1 and reached the BCS title game. "We like it when we're competing in games like this, late in the year, that are that meaningful," Miami coach Mark Richt said. "It's what you hope for, it's what you work towards."

BEST MATCHUP: North Carolina State's defense vs. Boston College's offense. The Eagles (5-4, 3-3) have found their offensive groove, averaging 40.3 points during a three-game winning streak that includes victories over Louisville and Florida State. The Wolfpack (6-3, 4-1) have lost two in a row against a pair of teams presently in the top four (No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 4 Clemson), and a defense that has been the strength of the team has allowed averages of 36.5 points and 418.5 total yards.

College Football Odds: Clemson Heavy Favorites Over Florida State In ACC Clash (nesn.com; Staff)

Two games with College Football Playoff implications highlight the Atlantic Coast Conference college football schedule in Week 11, starting Saturday afternoon when the Clemson Tigers host the Florida State Seminoles as 16-point favorites at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The defending national champions maintained their grip on the No. 4 spot in the CFP rankings with a 38-31 win over North Carolina State last week to improve their overall record to 8-1. However, the Tigers failed to cover as 10-point road chalk, extending their against the spread winless streak to four games going into Saturday’s Seminoles vs. Tigers betting matchup at Memorial Stadium. Clemson has struggled to pay out at the sportsbooks since opening the campaign on a 3-0 SU and ATS run, covering just once in its past six outings, and going 2-4-1 ATS in seven dates against conference opponents.

Thanksgiving week storm could dump lake effect snow on Upstate NY (PS; Coin)

Early forecasts show a potential coastal storm for the eastern U.S. just before Thanksgiving.

If that happens, an Accuweather meteorologist said, Upstate New York could get hammered by lake effect snow in the wake of the storm.

Any potential storm is nearly two weeks away, and much can change in the meantime. But Accuweather meteorologists say atmospheric changes in Alaska and Siberia indicate a storm the weekend before Thanksgiving or early in the week. Thanksgiving Day is Nov. 23.

"Everything is very general at this point, but it looks like that cold shot we're talking about comes down prior to Thanksgiving," said Accuweather meteorologist Jake Sojda. "It's a pretty fair assumption that somewhere in the eastern U.S. some impactful storm will develop with that cold shot."
