Welcome to USMC Day!

The United States Marine Corps, a branch of the United States Armed Forces, is responsible for providing power protection from the sea using the mobility of the United States Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces. The Continental Congress first established the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775, leading up to the American Revolution. Two battalions of Marines fought for independence both on land and at sea.

The birth of the U.S. Marine Corps began as a way to augment naval forces in the Revolutionary War. The recruiting headquarters was in the Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia, which is considered to be the birthplace of the Marines.

The Corps was abolished at the end of the Revolutionary War. However, on July 11, 1798, Congress ordered the creation of the Corps, named it the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and directed that it be available for service under the Secretary of the Navy.

Beat writer Q&A: Conor O’Neill of the Winston-Salem Journal breaks down the Demon Deacons (DO; Gutirrez)

Syracuse (4-5, 2-3 Atlantic Coast) kicks off against Wake Forest (5-4, 2-3) on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Orange, two wins away from ensuring bowl eligibility, lost at WFU, 28-9, a year ago. The Demon Deacons are coming off of an 11-point loss at No. 3 Notre Dame last week, while SU nearly beat Florida State on the road.

The Daily Orange spoke with the Winston-Salem Journal’s Conor O’Neill, who covers the Demon Deacons.

The Daily Orange: Wake Forest has turned a lot of heads this season. What’s fueling that success?

Conor O’Neill: Wake Forest’s surge this season has been led by its offense and the emergence of playmakers, really for the first time in Dave Clawson’s four years as coach. Greg Dortch was fantastic for the first eight games before season-ending surgery, but he’s hardly the only standout. Scotty Washington, a 6-foot-5 receiver, is becoming a consistent threat. Running back Matt Colburn II has run for 100-plus yards in back-to-back games. And quarterback John Wolford has the highest passer efficiency rate in the ACC (161.2), with 17 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Beat writers predict Syracuse to narrowly beat Wake Forest Saturday (DO; Staff)

Syracuse (4-5, 2-3 Atlantic Coast) returns home to the Carrier Dome for the first time since upsetting then-No. 2 Clemson on Oct. 13. The Orange takes on Wake Forest (5-4, 2-3) Saturday at 3 p.m. SU is coming off a 27-24 road loss to Florida State and the Demon Deacons are coming off an 11-point loss to No. 3 Notre Dame.

Under pressure

A bowl is not impossible should Syracuse lose, but the pressure of having to win both of your final games to ensure eligibility is something nobody wants right now. SU needs this. Unlike last season’s matchup between these two teams, the hurricane-free environment of the Carrier Dome will help. The Orange should finally surpass 30 points for the first time in a long time by making use of its favorable offensive matchups. And its helmets will look cool.

Syracuse’s weakness at cornerback a year ago now a strength thanks to Chris Fredrick and Scoop Bradshaw (DO; Langer)

The players getting the most recognition for Syracuse’s drastic turnaround on defense have largely been the veterans.

Senior linebacker Zaire Franklin is a three-time captain and addresses the media more than any other player. His counterpart Parris Bennett has racked up an ACC player of the week award and is tied for fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 9.2 tackles per game. Redshirt junior defensive tackle Chris Slayton has been SU’s most forceful player across an improved defensive line.

In the back end, though, it’s been two underclassmen who’ve sparked the change for Syracuse (4-5, 2-3 Atlantic Coast). Redshirt sophomore Chris Fredrick and true sophomore Scoop Bradshaw earned additional playing time toward the end of last season — with Fredrick becoming a starter — due to a mix of injuries and disappointing play from the incumbents.

How Syracuse’s newest threat, the tight end, strengthens the offense (DO; Gutirrez)

Dino Babers sees Syracuse’s tight end usage akin to a basketball scheme. On the hardwood, one player’s job is to set screens for a teammate to shoot 3-pointers. Babers’ tight ends are supposed to be no different, because their role is to draw a bigger linebacker or smaller defensive back, which could open up space or create mismatches for slot and outside receivers. Just like a pick-setter clears room for a shooter.

“And based off what (the defense) does,” Babers said, “you decide whether you want to run the ball or throw the ball based on your advantage.”

Syracuse has not only created more advantages with junior tight end Ravian Pierce, but it has capitalized on many of them. Through the tight end, Syracuse (4-5, 2-3 Atlantic Coast) is running an offense that hasn’t existed here in five years. The SU coaching staff wanted to expand the responsibility of its tight end after last year, Babers said, when Syracuse tight ends pulled in six catches for 49 yards total. Pierce has about four times that total with three games remaining on the schedule.

Syracuse football opponent preview: What to know about Wake Forest (DO; Langer)

Syracuse (4-5, 2-3 Atlantic Coast) faces Wake Forest (5-4, 2-3) at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Carrier Dome. The Orange is coming off a tough 27-24 loss to Florida State in which it had the chance to tie the game with a field goal at the end. The Demon Deacons last game was a loss to then-No. 5 Notre Dame.

This will be SU’s first home game since it upset then-No. 2 Clemson on Oct. 13. Here’s what to know about WFU.

All-time series: Syracuse leads, 4-2

Last time they played: The Orange fell to the Demon Deacons in the first weekend of October last year in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Syracuse’s offense struggled having to contend with rainy and windy conditions brought on by a hurricane. The Orange had just 326 yards of offense, more than 100 fewer than its season average.

Syracuse Football: Syracuse vs Demon Deacons; staff prediction (itlh.com; Staff)

The Syracuse football squad looks to fight back to .500 with a home tilt against Wake Forest. ITLH breaks it all down in our weekly staff prediction.

This is the definition of a 50-50 game. The experts have reiterated that message to with the analytics. Both teams head into this game and are telling each other, “man we’ve got to win this game.”

Wake Forest has lost four out of their last five and remain a game away from bowl eligibility. The Demon Deacons are night and day different from last season and might’ve taken a few pages out of the Orange is the New Fast playbook.

As most of the staff will suggest, I also expect this to be a shoot out. Probably not as crazy as SU vs Pitt last year with the 76 to 61 final score. But I think the Orange pull this one out and then must win one out of their final two games to go back bowling. Orange prevail 45 to 38.

FSU football film review: Defense vs. Syracuse (tomahawknation.com; Moyer and Sanders)

Welcome back to our weekly film review sessions of Florida State’s 2017 season. Every play broken down, with video and analysis.

As always, this content is best viewed on a computer or tablet, not on a phone.

As a whole, Florida State did a fairly good job of defending Syracuse’s hurry up offense. The Orange ran an impressive 95 plays for 463 yards, but only averaged 4.9 yards per play in the game.

The run game was nonexistent from Syracuse, with its running backs combining for 40 yards on 18 carries. The vast majority of Syracuse’s production on the day came from quarterback Eric Dungey (278 passing, 109 rushing).

Derrick Nnadi and the defensive line were able to get consistent pressure throughout the game and racked up six tackles for loss and three sacks. In the film review, we also mention a few opportunities where Josh Sweat was a split second away from a sack as well.

Upstate NY weather: What to know about the upcoming 36-hour winter blast (PS; Coin)

A cold front will blow through Upstate New York beginning tonight, bringing record-cold temperatures into single digits, up to 50 mph winds, and Upstate's first widespread snow. Most of the region will see less than an inch, although several inches could fall in hills downwind of lakes Erie and Ontario. The front moves into Western New York around dinner time and moves east tonight. "We'll get about a 36-hour blast of cold air," said National Weather Service meteorologist David Thomas.

At 10 am temperatures are in the 30s and 40s ahead of a strong #cold front. Temperatures in the teens and 20s will reach WNY & CNY tonight. pic.twitter.com/hxOFdAj1LC
