Welcome to Geographic Information Systems Day!

GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.

The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. Esri president and co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS Day. He considered GIS Day a good initiative for people to learn about geography and the uses of GIS. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate.

Syracuse Football: Nykeim Johnson is the next great wide receiver at SU (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse football wide receiver room will be gutted after this season. ITLH breaks down who is going to step up to the plate for #OITNF.

Things haven’t started the way Syracuse football fans would’ve hoped in terms of their 4-6 record so far this season. Another thing that hasn’t quite happened the way some people thought it would is the impact of dynamic wide receiver Nykeim Johnson out of the nation’s capital.

Johnson is a smaller receiver (5’8, 163 pounds soaking wet), but has all the tools. He’s a dynamic return man and also brings Desean Jackson like big play ability to the gridiron.

While it hasn’t really happened this season, there’s hope for the future.

Head coach Dino Babers spoke about Johnson’s role this season on the team and his outlook for the future in his weekly press conference with the media:

Syracuse searches for consistency at second outside wide receiver spot (DO; Bloss)

Every time Devin C. Butler arrives at an away game, he walks onto the field and FaceTimes his mom. Whenever Jamal Custis gets frustrated, he prays or listens to Meek Mill, the rapper synonymous with his hometown of Philadelphia.

Those opposite actions are how two wide receivers with a similar status battle the mental obstacles that come with their lack of job security. Syracuse’s head coach Dino Babers has made it no secret that Butler and Custis are competing for one spot.

“I’m looking for a guy to take the position,” Babers said last month. “Just to flat take the position.”

With two games to go, neither has. Syracuse (4-6, 2-4 Atlantic Coast) has reliable targets in seniors Steve Ishmael and Ervin Philips, but hasn’t found a lock for the second outside receiver position. Custis won the job out of camp, but an early-season injury derailed his season and left him with just eight catches. Butler assumed the role and hauled in 27 passes, but has not done enough to fend Custis off completely, Butler dropped two passes early last week against Wake Forest and Custis was in on the next series.

Orange’s Bowl Hopes Hinge On Injured Dungey Recovery - Syracuse New Times (syracusenewtimes.com; Michael)

When all is said and done, we may look back and sum up this Syracuse University football season as the thrill of victory and the agony of defoot.

The thrilling victory was a 27-24 upset of then-No. 2 and now-No. 4 Clemson Oct. 13 at the Carrier Dome. It was the biggest win for the Orange since SU knocked off No. 1 Nebraska in 1984 at the Dome. And “defoot” is the injured right foot of star quarterback Eric Dungey, whose availability in the final two games of the season will likely determine if Syracuse will qualify for its first bowl game since 2013.

That seemed like a lock following the victory over Clemson, which improved Syracuse’s record to 4-3. The Orange needed to win just two more games to go bowling, and the schedule seemed favorable with road games against two powerhouses having down years (Florida State and Louisville) and home games against Wake Forest and Boston College.

After playing well but losing at No. 8 (and now No. 2) Miami Oct. 21, the Orange visited Florida State and Dungey was injured on the fifth play of Syracuse’s first possession. The Orange fell behind 14-0 before Dungey returned in the second quarter, and SU lost 27-24 as Cole Murphy’s 43-yard field goal attempt as time expired was partially blocked and sailed wide left.

I dont get why someone done for the year would have even dressed last week and he was on the sidelines throwing before the game too.

It makes sense if he’s our #3. Not unable to go, but unable to protect himself.

Eric's a great kid by all accounts. But, all 3 years at SU, he has failed to finish a complete season, and left the team in a lurch. He is:
1. Not the most durable human being
2. His style of play makes it almost impossible to stay uninjured.

Yet, there are posters on this board ridiculing people discussing a change @ qb for next season...
It's insanity to keep hoping for a different result in the face of such evidence...

I want a qb that is on the field to throw the ball, not hurdle or karate kick opponents. We don't need our qb to also be the leading runner as well.

Play him next year if we must, but play DeVito equally or close to it for the inevidentable time when ED goes down...

Almost every college QB gets hurt nowadays. Look around the conference-Francois, Bryant, Brown just off the top of my head
