Welcome to Backwards Day!

Backward Day. The day where the world gets turned upside down and inside becomes out and madness becomes sanity and day becomes night, at least in concept. There’s just too much seriousness in the air, and sometimes you really just have to bend all the rules and let it all hang out.

History of Backward Day
Backward Day has a really long history, far older than the name of the holiday itself. In almost every culture there came a time of year when all the societal rules got turned on their head. Rome had Saturnalia, a day when all social norms were turned on their head. Gambling was no longer forbidden, and the masters took the day serving their slaves at the high table. During no other time was free speech actually permitted, especially amongst the slaves, but during Saturnalia, all manner of insult was allowed.

How many players can Syracuse football take on National Signing Day 2018? (PS; Bailey)

In nine days, Syracuse football will ink its second batch of 2018 recruits on National Signing Day.

The Orange added 15 prospects during the early signing period in December and, three weeks ago, head coach Dino Babers said the program planned to take seven more.

Much has happened, or at least become public, since then.

Syracuse landed two former four-stars as transfers -- wide receiver Trishton Jackson (Michigan State) and running back Abdul Adams (Oklahoma). Linebacker Troy Henderson announced his decision to transferfrom Syracuse. Class of 2018 linebacker Ja'Qurius Smith, who did not have the opportunity to sign early, decommitted.

Syracuse picked up another running back commit on Monday, as Mississippi native Jarveon Howard announced his commitment to Syracuse.

According to 247sports.com, Howard is rated a 3-star prospect and received an 86 composite ranking.

In addition to those rankings, Howard ranks as the 15th best prospect in the state of Mississippi and the 35th best running back in the class of 2018.

Just last week it was announced that former Oklahoma running back Abdul Adamstransferred to Syracuse, however he will not be eligible until 2019. Howard announced his commitment via Twitter:

The Columbia, Mississippi native has received offers from the likes of in-state powers Ole Miss, Mississippi State, in addition to Tennessee and others. Howard checks in at 5-foot 11 inches and weighs 202-pounds. According to his twitter, Howard rushed for 38 touchdowns and 2,520 yards this past season.

Syracuse fans should expect to see a physical runner, who seeks out contact and can lower the boom.

Syracuse suspends men's club hockey team after fight with NYU fans (video) (PS; Kramer)

Syracuse University has suspended its men's club hockey team after some of its players fought with fans following a game at NYU on Saturday night.

After an inquiry was made about the incident, a school spokesperson released the following statement:

"These actions are deeply troubling. Violence of any kind is contrary to Syracuse University values and will not be tolerated. We have suspended all Men's Hockey Club team activities, including all games and practices. We will be conducting a thorough investigation to determine further disciplinary action.''

According to the team's schedule, there are six games left in the regular season. Syracuse coach Nick Pierandri did not return a phone call seeking comment about the incident.

Since men's hockey is a club sport at Syracuse, it falls under the jurisdiction of the recreation services department instead of the athletic department.

A short video clip posted on Barstoolsports.com shows players reported to be from Syracuse fighting with fans at the contest, which was played at the Chelsea Piers sports complex in Manhattan.

Officials from SU and NYU declined to confirm the veracity of the clip or identify anyone in it. An NYU spokesperson did say, however, that team involved was not from that school.

Syracuse University Mourns Passing of Former Board of Trustees Chair Joseph O. Lampe ’53, L’55

Lampe was deeply involved in his community and in professional and service organizations in whose work he believed. But perhaps no group benefited more profoundly from his support than Syracuse University. His family name graces the corner of East Colvin Street and Comstock Avenue, where the Joseph O. and Shawn Lampe Athletic Complex provides primary training facilities for the University’s student athletes. He provided vital support for the Student-Athlete Fund, the Our Time Has Come and College of Law scholarship funds, and a dozen other scholarship programs; and he established the Joseph O. Lampe Endowed Scholarship, which is awarded to the captains of the football and men’s basketball teams. For the College of Visual and Performing Arts, he established the Iris L. Pérez Celis Fund to support studio arts majors from traditionally underrepresented groups.

Lampe was active in the Arizona Alumni Association and also played a key role in revitalizing the Southern California Alumni Association. His leadership of that group helped to enhance and elevate the University’s national profile and support the development of signature immersion learning experiences for students.

For the Board of Trustees, Lampe served as a Life participant on the Facilities Committee, and his visionary leadership as chair of the Board from 1998 to 2004 continues to shape the way the Board stewards and conducts the business of the University today.

“Joe was everything one could hope for in a Trustee, and then some,” says Board of Trustees chair Steven W. Barnes ‘82. “His deep commitment to the University spanned a lifetime, and his service and leadership on the Board stands as an example for all of us who were fortunate to know and work with him. On behalf of the Board, I offer our deepest condolences to his wife, Shawn, and their entire family. And I hope they take comfort in knowing that his work will live on through all those students who have benefited, and will continue to benefit, from his generous support for the University and its programs.”

Lampe served on the University’s $300 million Commitment to Learning Campaign Executive Committee and on the national committee for the Campaign for Syracuse. He also served on the College of Law Board of Visitors and the Chancellor’s Council, and he was a lifetime member of the Society of Fellows.
