Welcome to National Bacon Lover's Day!

National Bacon Lover's Day is dedicated to the popular treat cut from the meat of a pig. In the United States, bacon refers to meat from the belly of the pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon. To make bacon, the pork is cured using salt, and is then dried, boiled, or smoked. The smoking of bacon is often done with hickory, mesquite, or maple wood, and flavors such as brown sugar or maple may be added. More often than not, bacon is pan fried, and it is popular as a breakfast food, in sandwiches like the BLT or club sandwich, as a complement to salads, and in wrapping other foods. "Bacon mania" has swept the United States and Canada since the late 1990's, where there has been a great increase in the amount of bacon being eaten, and in the amount of new bacon recipes. The high sodium and nitrate content of bacon that lower its health benefits has not seemed to much slow down the bacon craze.
National Bacon Lover's Day is being observed today!

Discovering Dino: As young athlete, Babers found meaning of 'Ohana (PS; Mink)

Dino Babers wanted a recruit to meet someone from his past.

So Babers called up Ron Davis, his old high school basketball coach, and asked him to make the short drive to Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, N.C.

There, Babers told the story of the time Davis asked him to make an unselfish decision. Babers was a senior at Morse High School in San Diego, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound three-sport athlete whose future was on the football field.

As the story goes, Davis told Babers he didn’t want him to risk sabotaging his college football career on the basketball court. He told him there was a 6-foot-8 underclassman who would likely gobble up Babers’ playing time.

“I’m not asking you to leave the team,” Davis told Babers, “but if you’re not going to play that much, why don’t you think about giving your position to a sophomore or freshman?”

Babers came back the next day and relinquished his position to the underclassman.

“He believed in team first,” Davis said.

That’s just one vignette that sheds light on how Babers’ past influences the way he leads his Syracuse football program. Babers, Davis believes, wanted that recruit to hear that story in case he wound up in a similar position at Syracuse.

It also helps explain why Babers was drawn to the islands to attend college at the University of Hawaii, to play for a coach in Dick Tomey whose team-building philosophies latched onto him like a virus that has spread into all facets of his life.

Syracuse football projected depth chart: Who will start Week 1 at Liberty? (PS; Bailey)

With only a few practices separating the end of Syracuse football's preseason camp from the start of its Week 1 prep, this feels like a good time to take stock of the 2019 team.

The Orange has held two scrimmages, the coaching staff has evaluated key positions and injuries have changed the outlook of certain position groups. Let's break down where everything stands and take a stab at what the Orange's starting lineups will look like at Liberty on Aug. 31.

Quarterback
Dennis Nett
Quarterback
Starter: Tommy DeVito, rSo.

Nothing to guess at here. DeVito is squarely at the helm of the Orange offense going into his first full year as the starter. He spent this offseason focused on nailing down timing with his wideouts, and it showed during camp.

The real tests are almost here for Dino Babers' lone consensus four-star recruit. How he handles them will be one of the most important factors in the Orange's 2019 season.

Backup: Clayton Welch, rSr.

This was not an easy decision. Welch worked throughout last year as the No. 3 behind DeVito and Eric Dungey. He was slotted as the backup during spring ball and entering fall camp.

But last Saturday, redshirt junior Rex Culpepper outperformed Welch in SU's second scrimmage. That might be enough to push him onto the No. 2 line. The question is: does the Orange staff value its most recent evaluation or the overall body of work in the last year or so?

It's possible this competition continues into the season, especially if late-game opportunities present themselves.

Running back
Dennis Nett
Running back
Starter: Moe Neal, Sr.

Neal has three years of playing experience and a complete skill set. He's averaged at least 5.3 yards per carry each of those campaigns.

Now, the Orange is absolutely stacked in the backfield this year. Relative to traditional snap opportunities, SU's depth at this position is probably better than any other. So expect at least two backs to see consistent run -- possibly as many as four.

How many writers didn’t vote for Syracuse football in the AP Top 25 poll? (PS; Burrows)

Syracuse football came in ranked No. 22 in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll on Monday, but there were plenty of writers who left the Orange off their ballot completely.

Of the 62 voters, 22 didn’t vote for the Orange.

The highest ranking was No. 13, from Eric Hansen of the South Bend Tribune. Hansen covers Notre Dame.

BREAKING: Clemson ranked No. 1 in preseason AP Top 25 for first time; Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State round out the top five in the poll, presented by @askRegions: AP Top 25 Poll

— AP Top 25 (@AP_Top25) August 19, 2019
The Orange finished with 209 points and seven spots behind last season’s No. 15 final ranking.

The AP preseason poll appearance is the first for Syracuse since 1998.

Top-ranked Clemson was the only other ACC school in the poll while Miami, Virginia and Virginia Tech all received votes.

Syracuse was also ranked No. 22 in the USA Today coaches poll earlier this summer.

Here’s how the voting was broken down for the Orange:

No. 13: 1 vote
No. 16: 1 vote
No. 17: 3 votes
No. 18: 4 votes
No. 19: 4 votes
No. 20: 5 votes
No 21: 4 votes
No. 22: 6 votes
No. 23: 5 votes
No. 24: 3 votes
No. 25: 4 votes

Not Ranked: 22 votes

Orange Watch: Part II of our Syracuse football 2019 game-by-game predictions - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: We’re under two weeks away from the highly anticipated 2019 season opener at Liberty Aug. 31 (6:00 p.m. ET / ESPN+), and Syracuse is fresh off of Monday’s preseason No. 22 ranking in the first AP poll. In Part II, we take a look at games five-eight in chronological order, with Part III covering the rest of the season to be published Aug. 22. Part I is here.

While game five of the season against Holy Cross will be the FCS Crusaders first time in the Dome, the Worcester, Mass.-based school has played on campus before, many times before. From 1946-1973, the Orangemen and Crusaders (5-6 last season) played 24 times either at Archbold Stadium or Fitton Field (conspicuously tucked next to I-290 in Worcester), including the 1957 game at Archbold that a season later resulted in a Sports Illustrated cover photograph of SU quarterback Chuck Zimmerman (1956-58) chronicling the fifth week of the 1958 season. With an open week looming and this year’s game turning one-sided early in the second half, plenty of Orange reserves receive game experience in the 45-3 final. (4-1, 0-1)

The off weekend comes at perfect time for the players and staff to regroup because there’s only one home game in the month of October (Syracuse does not play on four Saturdays this season), and the Thursday night national TV game to start things off at North Carolina State is a tough assignment at loud and frantic Carter-Finley Stadium. The Wolfpack (9-4) are still smarting from scoring 41 points and losing by 10 to the ‘Cuse last year in the Dome, so the NCSU defense will be up to the challenge of stifling the potent Orange attack and zeroing in on Tommy DeVito. Trailing 33-28, a fourth quarter deflected interception gives the ‘Pack possession inside the Orange 20 with 2:00 to play, and a late touchdown run stuns SU 35-33. A large portion of the large crowd enjoys themselves on the field afterwards as the clock strikes midnight. (4-2, 0-2)

Football coaches thrive on the rituals of their weekly in-season schedules, and they stick to them. Playing back-to-back on a Thursday night, then a Friday night eight days later hosting Pittsburghprovides a mid-season paradigm shift for Dino Babers and his staff, but coming off a road loss and bad memories of their own over the overtime defeat to the Panthers (7-7) last season, provides plenty of motivation for the now famous Orange version of “Friday Night Lights.” SU scoring 17 points on its first three possessions has the building buzzing, and we get a glimpse of what’s to come in the season’s final month as the rushing attack comes alive in a 38-17 victory over annual rival Pitt, to gain the first conference victory of the season. (5-2, 1-2)

There is simply no way a program with all of the resources Florida State has that the Seminoles (5-7) will remain out of the national polls and not in their regular spot among the ACC’s bowl rotation for too long. Of course, last year was an aberration, the first season FSU did not play in a bowl game since 1982, and the schedule is bookended by tough games against Boise State in Jacksonville and at Florida, besides the ACC Atlantic. But the ‘Noles did have two preseason All-ACC selections (no small feat considering Clemson had 13 players of the 27 selected, Syracuse had four, Miami three, FSU and BC two, and Virginia, Pitt, and Duke one each), and running back Cam Akers even received a player of the year vote. SU is up 24-10 entering the fourth quarter when FSU ends a long drive with a score to trail by seven. Akers scores the tying touchdown with 3:00 to play and the game goes into overtime. After the Orange only get a field goal on the first OT possession, the Seminoles finish the comeback with a short TD run to cap a 30-27 comeback victory. (5-3, 1-3)

https://bigredlouie.com/2019/08/19/louisville-football-looks-for-senior-day-victory-over-syracuse/ (bigredlouie.com; Lane)

Louisville football closes out their 2019 home campaign against the Syracuse Orange at Cardinal Stadium while trying to send their seniors out with a victory.
The week of build-up to the final home game of the season for Louisville football will be one full of excitement.

After I predicted the Cards to knock-off the NC State Wolfpack to become bowl-eligible, the Cardinals will be flying high as they look to pick up wins in their final two games of the season to improve their standing with the bowl selection committees.

Their first opportunity comes against Dino Babers’ Syracuse Orange.

The Orange are coming off a fantastic 2018 season that saw them win 10 games and stomp West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.

During their mid-season run of four-straight wins, the Orange took Louisville behind the woodshed. Syracuse squashed the Cards 54-23 inside the Carrier Dome in early November.

This year’s squad will have a few familiar pieces back on offense and will have one of the most experienced and upper classmen-heavy defenses in the country.

Although they do have a good core coming back, Babers and his staff will be tasked with replacing the two main cogs on both sides of the ball. The quarterbacks of both the offense and defense.

How well they are able to accomplish that will determine whether Syracuse is able to continue their rise toward the upper-part of the ACC or if they will take a step back and be ripe for Louisville to pick up their seventh win of the season.

https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/central-ny/news/2019/08/20/with-renovations--will-carrier-dome-have-its-name-changed-- (spectrumlocalnews.com; Staff)

If you received your season tickets for the upcoming Syracuse University football season in the mail on Monday, you might have been left scratching your head while looking at the package.

That's because the location for the games was listed as the “Syracuse University Dome” and not the “Carrier Dome.”

The $118 million a renovation on the Dome is underway, but is there a name change going along with all of the work?

Spectrum News reached out to SU for clarification, but did not receive much of an answer.

“We are excited about the new fan experience we are working to create at the Dome,” SU officials said in a statement. “Our $118 million investment will change the face and footprint of the Dome, providing a game-day environment unlike anything our campus community, student-athletes, fans and visitors have had before.”

If the university is considering a change, Carrier won't likely let the name go without a fight.

"Carrier and Syracuse University have enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial partnership dating back to 1979, when Carrier provided the crucial final leg of funding to make the Carrier Dome a reality,” Carrier told Spectrum News in a statement.

"In return, the University legally granted the company the right to name its stadium the Carrier Dome. The language in the agreement is clear, which in part says Carrier has the right ‘to officially name the stadium facility the 'Carrier Dome.'"

Syracuse University officials have made public statements recognizing that the agreement remains in force in a 2009 amendment and again with a marketing agreement in 2018.

https://www.archysport.com/2019/08/college-football-check-list-what-syracuse-football-has-to-do-to-reach-the-most-ambitious-goals/ (archysport.com; Bailey)

Tommy DeVito remembers his arrival at Dino Babers' office last fall, as the Syracuse head coach recalled memories and memorable memories for his quarter of the future.

Babers briefly mentioned Jimmy Garoppolo, his outstanding signalman in eastern Illinois. Garoppolo won the Walter Payton Award in 2013, awarded to the most outstanding offensive player of the football championship subdivision, as well as the FCS equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.

The corresponding conversation escaped DeVito on Thursday. But the context was clear: DeVito, the University's only four-star candidate based on the Babers consensus, has the potential to bring similar material to central New York.

"It's always a goal you want to have – for all players on the team," said DeVito. "It's always something in the back of your head."

The standards have improved for Orange after the program's first season of 10 wins since 2001. And while DeVito, a redshirt student, emphasized that team results and fun take priority in individual braces, he has admitted that the trust of the individuals on the team was paramount. they are able to win the highest honors of the country. Security Andre Cisco has been named a rookie of the year in the All – American and ACC category as a real freshman last fall. Kicker Andre Szmyt won unanimously the American honors and the Lou Groza prize. As a group, Orange climbed to 13th place in national polls.

For many members of the 2019 team, fourth for Dino Babers since his arrival at Bowling Green, success has been normalized. The culture is changing from a program that has been performed 4-8 during each of Babers' first two seasons.

"Last year, 10 wins, this will be the norm," said DeVito, "and we hope to exceed that this year."

This redeveloped list highlights the talent and depth of most job groups. And his players have thrown the artificial ceilings that surround each preseason. We are convinced that nothing is on the table – not even a place in the playoffs of college football.

So, how could this become a reality? Here are all the boxes that SU must check to achieve its most noble goal:

Sean Riley pointed the hill next to Manley Field House after the third day of the preparatory camp and thought back to summer training.

League players spent much of their overtime on conditioning during the off-season. And the subtext of some of the most grueling sessions was the opportunity that expects September 14th.

That's when Clemson, the two-time national champion, shows up at Carrier Dome for a reluctant game. After the Orange thwarted the Tigers two years ago, Syracuse ended the opposition and managed to create another major surprise at Death Valley.

DeVito said in the spring that the contest was "everyone's idea". Riley is of the same opinion.

During the weeks and months leading to the launch of the ACC Network, the people behind it have promoted both the scope of the coverage it promises and the breadth of its technical extravagance. There will be deeply-reported documentaries, they’ve said. And constant coverage of basketball. And, also, “robotic Vinten camera pedestals” and “26 2 LED lighting fixtures,” according to a recent jargon-filled release lauding the network’s new studio.

The ACC Network, created in partnership with ESPN, will soon become a reality. It launches on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m., broadcast from Studio G, a 2800-square foot space on the ESPN campus in Bristol, Conn. The debut will culminate a long-awaited moment of arrival that will help shape the future of the ACC, and define the legacy of John Swofford, the conference’s longtime commissioner who led the league through years of uncertainty.

The old questions, about whether the network would exist, have been replaced by ones about distribution, programming and, most central to the network’s unstated mission, long-term profitability. So goes the end of one journey and the start of a new one. And yet to understand the significance of the network’s arrival is to understand the context of its journey, which began a decade ago in a time when Swofford wondered who he could trust.

For years questions followed him, speculation about the potential demise of the ACC — “a lot of crazy stuff,” Swofford, the league’s commissioner since 1997, said recently. The rumors persisted throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s: Clemson and Florida State to the Big 12; maybe North Carolina and Virginia to the Big Ten; the specter that other conferences might plunder the ACC the same way the ACC did the old Big East.

https://miami.cbslocal.com/2019/08/19/randy-cross-miami-hurricanes-manny-diaz-acc-football-interview/ (cbslocal.com; Cross)

The Manny Diaz era officially kicks off this week when the Hurricanes face the in-state rival Florida Gators at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida to begin the college football season.
Diaz takes over for Mark Richt who decided to retire just two years after taking over as head coach of the ‘Canes. Following a brief whirlwind of a few days for Diaz as head coach of Temple, the 45-year-old returned to Coral Gables to take the reins.

He is very familiar with the assets that he has on the defensive side of the ball in returning linebackers Shaquille Quarterman and Michael Pinckney, along with corner Trajan Brandy and defensive lineman Jonathan Garvin, having served as the defensive coordinator for the unit that finished 18th in the country in scoring defense allowing 19.5 points per game. The offense was the struggle spot last year and that is the key point that CBS Sports college football analyst Randy Cross is looking for as the season begins.

“A lot of excitement and energy about that defense. There certainly was last year and there is no reason to expect that it won’t be like that this year. It is all about the offense though and what is going to happen there,” said Cross via phone interview. “That offense with that kind of defense? I mean, come on. Do you have to be great? No. If you are just good, you are the perfect compliment to that defense.”

College football experts Barton Simmons, Chip Patterson, Barrett Sallee, and Tom Fornelli all agree that Clemson will win the ACC, but they share which sleeper teams could compete with the Tigers for the conference title

https://247sports.com/LongFormArticle/ACC-Football-2019-Biggest-Key-Fast-Start-Clemson-Florida-State-Virginia-Tech-NC-State-North-Carolina-Wake-Forest-134590864/#134590864_1 (247sports.com; Igoe)

For some teams, a loss or two early in the year can provide motivation to correct their mistakes and get better as the year goes on. For others, it can entirely derail their season. All 14 teams in the ACC face questions heading into the year. Below, we take a look at something each program must do to answers those areas of concern and give itself a shot at a strong start in 2019.

CLEMSON - DEVELOP THE NEXT WAVE OF STARS ALONG THE DEFENSIVE LINE

The Tigers are unsurprisingly super talented along the defensive line once again, but the experience is lacking, and the group must find a way to replace top NFL Draft picks Clelin Ferrell (fourth overall in the first round), Christian Wilkins (13th overall in the first round) and Dexter Lawrence (17th overall in the first round). That’s not to mention starting defensive end Austin Bryant and backup tackle Albert Huggins, both of whom are now in the NFL, too. The good news is the unit is oozing with potential still. Xavier Thomas appears poised to become the team’s next breakout defensive end, and defensive tackles Xavier Kelly and Nyles Pinckney have been developing in the program for the last few seasons. With the offense expected to carry the load early in the season, if Clemson’s defensive line develops in the early part of the year, the Tigers could be looking at another national championship season.

FLORIDA STATE - FIND CONSISTENT QUARTERBACK PLAY FROM SOMEONE
Second-year head coach Willie Taggart has yet to name a starting quarterback. Most believe the returning James Blackman is the favorite, but Wisconsin transfer Alex Hornibrook and Louisville transfer Jordan Travis are both in the mix as well. New offensive coordinator Kendal Briles is expected to take the offense to a new level, but he needs consistent quarterback play - and early in the season with the schedule ahead - to get there. Whoever ends up starting needs to be better than Deondre Francois was last year in the passing game (57 percent completion percentage, 2,731 yards, 15 touchdowns, 12 interceptions), especially with Boise State and Virginia making up two of the first three opponents.

SYRACUSE - BECOME ROAD WARRIORS
(Photo: Rich Barnes, USA TODAY Sports)
The Orange went 3-3 away from the Carrier Dome last season and are just 5-11 away from home during the Dino Babers era overall. This season, Syracuse opens things up with consecutive road contests right out the gate at Liberty and at Maryland. Syracuse should be favored in both games, but they won’t be easy. Hugh Freeze will likely have some tricks up his sleeve with the Flames, and Maryland has a new regime as well, and some talent. If Syracuse can find a way to start 2-0, it should have plenty of momentum going into its home opener against Clemson on Sept. 14.

NC STATE - ESTABLISH A NEW OFFENSIVE IDENTITY

Top 50 CFB Programs, All-Time

ESPN: The 50 best college football programs over 150 years
From the article:
...our Stats & Information Group was presented with a huge challenge: to rank the top programs in college football history... we created a formula (noted at the bottom of the page) to rank college football's greatest programs across all divisions using one metric...
Here's ESPN's top 50 CFB Programs of all-time (with their ACC-related comments):
1) Alabama
2) Notre Dame
72.9 | 13 national titles
If you took a snapshot of the middle of college football's life -- from its 50th anniversary in 1919 through its 125th birthday in 1994 -- the Fighting Irish would be an easy No. 1. The genius of Knute Rockne made the Irish a national team in a regional sport. The Hall of Fame coaches who carried the burden of working in his shadow -- Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian, Dan Devine and Lou Holtz -- maintained Notre Dame's dominance. The past 25 years? Not so much. But Brian Kelly has the Irish knocking at the door again.
3) Ohio State
4) Oklahoma
5) USC
6) Michigan
7) Yale
8) Nebraska
9) Texas
10) North Dakota State
11) Princeton
12) Penn State
13) Harvard
14) Tennessee
15) LSU
16) Mount Union
17) Miami (FL)
58.4 | 5 national titles
The Hurricanes gave the rest of college football a head start of 67 seasons and still reached the top 20, thanks to that incredible two-decade run from the early 1980s into the 2000s. During that time, The U won five national championships under four head coaches, a feat no other program would be foolish enough to undertake, much less talented enough to achieve. The swagger has diminished; Miami now lives among the swells of the ACC. Wearing a turnover chain, of course.
18) St. Johns (MN)
19) Florida State
57.4 | 3 national titles
Florida State didn't start accepting men until all those GIs came home from World War II. Florida refused to play the Seminoles until the legislature forced the rivalry down the Gators' gullet. And once Bobby Bowden arrived as head coach in Tallahassee in 1976, we learned why. Under Bowden, Florida State finished in the top five for 14 consecutive seasons, winning two national championships and playing for three others. Jimbo Fisher picked up where Bowden left off. The Noles have the good fortune to be a public university in a talent-rich state. But no one took advantage of that talent quite like Bowden.
20) Auburn
21) Florida
22) Georgia
23) Boise State
24) Clemson

2019 Breakout WRs

Athlon has compiled a list of WRs to watch in 2019... here are the ACC WRs:

Emeka Emezie, NC State
NC State lost two 1,000-yard receivers, but coach Dave Doeren’s group is still in good shape. Emezie should emerge as the Wolfpack’s No. 1 receiver after catching 53 passes for 616 yards and five scores last fall.

Taj Harris/Trishton Jackson, Syracuse
Syracuse returns one of the ACC’s top receiving corps, and this unit could be even better if Harris and Jackson develop as expected in 2019. Jackson sat out nearly all of the 2018 season due to transfer rules but caught a touchdown in the Camping World Bowl win over West Virginia. Harris caught 40 passes for 565 yards as a freshman last year and is only going to get better in 2019 and beyond.

Frank Ladson/Joseph Ngata, Clemson
Clemson is already loaded at receiver with Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross, and the pass catchers for quarterback Trevor Lawrence will only get deeper once Amari Rodgers is back from injury. While those three playmakers will get a bulk of the catches, keep a close eye on Ladson and Ngata this year. Both Ngata and Ladson (as true freshmen) are poised to make a big-time impact in 2019.

Taysir Mack, Pitt
Pitt leaned heavily on its ground game to win the Coastal Division title last season, but with two 1,000-yard rushers and four starters gone up front, the focal point of the offense should shift to quarterback Kenny Pickett under new play-caller Mark Whipple. Mack should benefit from Whipple’s arrival, as he flashed big-play potential (22.3 ypc on 25 catches) last season.

Sage Surratt, Wake Forest
Greg Dortch will be missed, but Wake Forest still hasw a talented receiving corps for quarterbacks Sam Hartman and Jamie Newman to utilize. Surratt ranked second on the team in catches (41), yards (581) and tied for third in touchdown grabs (four) last fall. Look for Surratt to become the No. 1 option in the Demon Deacons’ passing game.

Links, news and rumors - 8/20/19

CBS Sports makes some honest admissions about #SECbias in "Five takeaways from the 2019 preseason AP Top 25 poll", such as:
Preseason polls set an expectation and a perception for teams -- both of which will follow the teams all season long and -- intentionally or not -- could help decide the eventual national champion. For example, if Florida loses to Miami on Saturday, it will fall from No. 8 in the next AP poll but it won't fall out of the rankings altogether even though Miami's unranked. Then, should Florida win the following week against Tennessee-Martin, it will still hover around the top 10 at 1-1 because that's where everybody already believes it belongs.

But let's say an unranked team like Georgia Tech, which didn't appear on any ballots, loses to Clemson in Week 1 and follows it up with a win over South Florida in Week 2. Georgia Tech will not appear on any ballots despite having a better theoretical loss than Florida's and a better win, as well. Why? Because everybody will still believe Florida is the much better team since they felt that from the beginning, whereas Georgia Tech will be doubted until it proves itself repeatedly.
and
The SEC is everybody's favorite conference... The Big Ten may have more overall teams in the AP poll than the SEC (seven to six), but all six of the SEC's teams are in the top 16... There were three other SEC schools to appear on ballots (Missouri finished 26th, Mississippi State 28th and South Carolina 35th)... this is a side effect of the SEC typically getting a larger benefit of the doubt in the minds of voters. Missouri, Mississippi State and South Carolina went a combined 23-16 last season, which is respectable enough. But those first two are both replacing multiple-year starters at quarterback, and while each is replacing them with grad transfers, I'm not sure ACC, Big 12 or Pac-12 schools with identical situations would receive the same level of optimism.
__________

In case you missed this (I know I did):
Syracuse University President and Chancellor Kent Syverud was named chair of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Council of Presidents for the 2019-20 academic year. The council advises the ACC on matters of common interest to the member institutions that may affect the conference as a whole.
Some old school fans may think "there goes the neighborhood", but for the rest of us I think it's good to see the new members getting involved more deeply. Besides, this conference could use some new blood!

CNY man rescues drivers from flooding in his underwear, loses job (report) (PS; Herbert)

A Central New York man says he lost his job after rescuing drivers stranded by flooding this weekend.
According to radio station Big Frog 104, Michael Venettozzi is a tow truck driver who was sent by AAA to the Riverside Center in North Utica on Saturday when torrential storms flooded the roads and parking lots. He pulled three drivers out of the flood waters, but needed to strip to his underwear to do it.

“When I arrived it looked like a raging river on the north side of the BJ’s parking lot,” Venettozzi told the Utica radio station. “I had to be almost completely submerged on my knees to hook up the car, so I decided to strip down to my boxers.”

Photos posted on Facebook by Kelly Tichenor show Venettozzi in his boxers, hooking up cars and towing them to dry ground. Venettozzi cautioned the drivers to get out of the cars, warning them the battery could explode; moments later, “the airbags deployed in a loud bang.”

Venettozzi revealed on Facebook a day later that he was fired. He told Big Frog that his boss said his “poor decisions put his truck and equipment in extreme risk of being damaged.”
“I don’t regret helping people, I don’t regret the choice I made... a human life will always trump a piece of equipment to me!!” he wrote on Facebook. “Smdh whos hiring?”
