Welcome to Dome Deflation Day!

This morning at 7 AM, an icon of Syracuse architecture will start the process of being decommissioned. By the end of the day, the fabric of the old roof should be gone forever. It was a good run. Thanks Birdair, Inc!

Syracuse will lower the Carrier Dome’s air-inflated roof for the final time this morning (PS; Carlson)

The Carrier Dome’s air-inflated roof will be deflated for the final time this morning, bringing an end to an era both in Central New York and across the country.

The deflation process is set to start at 7 a.m. The roof is expected to take between 45 minutes to an hour to be lowered inside the building, where it will hang about 30 feet off the ground until it is removed by workers.

The time was set early Monday morning, after a final check of the weather forecast.

For those hoping to follow the process, Syracuse has a livestream set up of the building with an excellent view.

The deflation will formally mark the end of the pillowed roof that has dominated the skyline since the arena was built and opened before the 1980 football season. The roof was particularly striking when coming toward Syracuse from Tully on I-81 and its features are so distinctive that they’ve been worked into T-shirts over the past decade, many of which have commemorated Syracuse’s home-field advantage or historic basketball crowds.

Once considered the pinnacle of technology because of the way the air-inflated roof economically covered vast spaces, the era of big-time sports helped usher out the technology across the country. The Carrier Dome was the last sporting facility of its magnitude using air-pressure to keep the roof afloat.

So on Monday that roof — the largest air-inflated stadium roof in the country — will be retired in the name of progress and go the way of the Metrodome, Pontiac Silverdome and RCA Dome before it.

Top Syracuse Games to Re-watch on YouTube: Niko and Matt discuss their favorites (cnycentral.com; Tamurian and Hauswirth)[/B]

The sudden pause in the sports world has forced fans across the country to consume their favorite teams in a different kind of way.

That's where YouTube comes into the equation.

Videos from games decades past, some in standard definition and high definition, helping fans get through a difficult time due to the COVID-19 pandemic stretching from coast-to-coast.

Syracuse University has had plenty of excellent teams in the past, as CNY Central Sports Director Niko Tamurian and Matt Hauswirth share their favorites to re-watch on YouTube.

CLEMSON FOOTBALL: Meet Matt Bockhorst, new face of Tigers (thetandd.com; Lentz)

Week after week, Eric Mac Lain went in front of the media, answered every question with professionalism, even as a college kid, and quickly became the face of Clemson football.

That was 2015, the Tigers’ first trip to the College Football Playoff. The offensive guard turned that opportunity into the moniker “Mr. Clemson” and eventually a college football analyst job at ACC Network.

It was obvious early on Mac Lain had the chops to become a star. He knew what he was talking about, and he was a great representative of the program.

Clemson’s had several players fill that role since, even at offensive line. It’s a position that doesn’t get the glory of a quarterback or a flashy receiver, but it can produce great spokesmen.

John Simpson, an All-ACC guard in 2019, is a prime example. He represented Clemson at the ACC Kickoff last July and grabbed attention with his decision to don a blonde wig, since quarterback Trevor Lawrence didn’t make the trip.

So it’s not unusual for an eccentric, fun-loving big guy to take on a popular role with the media and fans.

Enter Matt Bockhorst.

Top 2020 Transfer QBs (RX; HM)

Top 2020 Transfer QBs

From SportingNews: Ranking transfer quarterbacks for 2020
Of the two best transfer QBs, one is leaving the ACC and the other is coming to it...

1. Jamie Newman (Wake Forest -> Georgia)
Newman enjoyed a breakout season as a redshirt senior in Wake Forest’s high-scoring offense, accounting for 32 total touchdowns, 2,868 passing yards and 574 rushing yards in 2019. Now Newman — who compiled a 10-6 record as a starter the last two seasons — will be counted on to replace veteran quarterback Jake Fromm while leading Georgia back to the SEC championship game for the fourth consecutive season. Newman brings a dynamic skill set to the position, and it’s on new offensive coordinator Todd Monken to make that work.

2. D'Eriq King (Houston -> Miami)
The Hurricanes' quarterback play bottomed out in the 14-0 loss to Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl, but King offers a short-term solution in 2020. He totaled 50 touchdowns in 2018 before redshirting last year at Houston, and he possesses talent that should translate well in the ACC. He also gives first-year coordinator Rhett Lashlee — who comes from SMU — a dynamic playmaker around whom to build the offense. Expect Miami to be better at that most important position as a result.

3. K.J. Costello (Stanford -> Miss. State)

4. Feleipe Franks (Florida -> Arkansas)

5. Peyton Ramsey (Indiana -> Northwestern)

6. Jake Bentley (S. Carolina -> Utah)

7. Chase Brice (Clemson -> Duke)
Brice, whose claim to fame is leading Clemson to a comeback victory against Syracuse in 2018 when Trevor Lawrence went down with injury, will transfer after spending the last two seasons as a backup. He is a graduate transfer who can play right away with the Blue Devils, and he should be able to build on that success with David Cutcliffe. The familiarity with the ACC is a bonus.

Transfer quarterbacks looking for waiver

Phil Jurkovec (Notre Dame -> Boston College)
Ian Book’s decision to stay at Notre Dame for one final season prompted backup Jurkovec to find another opportunity elsewhere, and he'll be in a competition with Dennis Grosel for the starting job — if he's eligible to play right away. Jurkovec has been accurate in a limited sample size, and he offers an added running dimension with 5.8 yards per carry. First-year coach Jeff Hafley has options at the position.

Statement from Hokie Mark (RX; HM)

Statement from Hokie Mark

We can't ignore the fact that this is a sports blog, but outside people all over the world are dying of a rapidly-spreading pandemic. This Coronavirus plague has caused the NBA and (so far) most college sporting events to be suspended or cancelled. It's a strange time to be a sports fan.

So what does a sports blogger write about when there aren't any sports? More important, what SHOULD he write about in view of what's going on in the world?

I'm certainly not insensitive to the danger and suffering caused by novel COVID-19. I have a few friends in Asia right now, and lots of friends in Spain. USA Today reports that as of this morning 4,700 people worldwide (including 40 in the United States) have already died from this disease - and that's all from a little over 100,000 people infected. Another website claims 5,083 total deaths and 138,611 confirmed cases - that's 3.7% dead (although it's still too early to get an accurate fatality rate).

So again, I ask: what should I be writing about in view of this situation?
