Welcome to World Redhead Day!

Redheads are celebrated around the world today. Red is the rarest hair color, with only 2 percent of the world's population having it. Most redheads are of northern or western European ancestry; the highest percentage of redheads come from Scotland, followed by Ireland.

Besides celebrating red hair, the day raises awareness about the stigma associated with red hair, and the discrimination that redheads sometimes face. Redheads are often stereotyped as having a fiery temper. There even is Kick a Ginger Day, which has led to some children being bullied. In ancient Greece, some redheads were considered to be vampires. Many redheads were killed in Europe between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries because they were perceived to be associated with witchcraft.

Orange Watch: 2020 Syracuse football to embark on season like no other - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: An initial barometer has been set. Syracuse chancellor Kent Syverud announced last week that students will back on the SU campus for in-class instruction for the Fall 2020 Semester, following the disruption to this past Spring Semester due to the pandemic forcing schools to close their doors. An accelerated curriculum starts Aug. 24 and ends Thanksgiving week. That’s the first step to even considering college football games to be played in the renovated Dome come September.

When ACC commissioner John Swofford presented his four scenarios for how the 2020 ACC football season may play out almost a week (May 14) before Syverud announced Syracuse’ plans for students returning, only two of the four options he outlined to the media even involved playing football games in the fall. Of those two options, one was a normal schedule, and the other a shortened season.

Based on the fact that even with a tireless amount of time spent by those in charge planning for a multitude of options, just the fact that that is occurring leads us to believe that now with the green light for students to return to campuses to begin working out in preparation for eventual pre-season camps there will be a 2020 season, albeit a shortened one to perhaps 10 games – nine in the ACC and one non-league game.

Syracuse is expected to outline its multi-step process this week to bring student-athletes back on campus in conjunction with state and county guidelines, but with the currently-booked opener at Boston College now just 102 days away on Friday, Sept. 4, part of an opening week of games to be telecast exclusively on the ACC Network, we just don’t see how there can not be a change to the agenda.

Taking a look at the current 2020 schedule, it seems that if a shortened season were to occur, all games against FCS teams would go by the wayside meaning the first game in the renovated Dome would not be Colgate Sept. 19, but against an ACC team to be determined.

Austin Roon provides Syracuse football with length, physicality and speed (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football further juices up its linebacker core with Austin Roon commitment.

Syracuse football is in a groove on the recruiting trail as it pertains to linebackers, with the Orange picking up Austin Roon, the second 2021 player at that position to select the ‘Cuse over the last couple of days.

In the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Roon, Syracuse is getting a defensive stud who has a high football IQ and demonstrates admirable leadership on the field, according to recruiting analysts.

Additionally, Roon has ample agility, length, and running prowess. He has competed through some injuries, and that perseverance and toughness will serve him well when Roon transitions to the collegiate level, his high-school coach, Mark Cisco, told mlive.com.

To date, the three-star Roon represents the Orange’s highest-rated commit in its 2021 recruiting cycle. The rising senior at Byron Center High School in Byron Center, Mich., is placed at No. 801 nationally by the 247Sports Composite.

At outside linebacker, the 247Sports Composite aligns Roon at No. 51 overall, with 247Sports putting him at No. 63. Within the state of Michigan, Roon is a top-30 guy.

Committed! @CuseFootball @CoachBabersCuse #GoOrange

Which Sport(s) pay for the others? (RX; HM)

Which Sport(s) pay for the others?

This post began with a simple idea: take the EADA revenue and expense data reported by each school, compute the profit, and show which "profitable" sports are subsidizing the unprofitable ones...

Alas, the EADA data is largely... fake. This is clearly seen in the case of Florida State, where EVERY sport reported the exact same revenue as expenses - in other words, they ALL broke even, if we're to believe the administration in Tallahassee (call me skeptical!).

Does that mean it's totally worthless? I don't think so. It looks like some schools report the data more or less accurately, and some only hide the truth in one or more sports while faithfully reporting others (at least, that's what I think they're doing).

So, with those caveats understood, here are the ACC profit/loss numbers for the 3 major sports, plus "all others" reported in the 2018-19 EADA report:

Links, news and rumors - 5/25/80

Here's a college football link from All Sports Discussion based on Ranking all 65 Power Five Football Coaches - CBSsports, but pulling out just the ACC coaches.

Top ACC head coach? No surprise - it's Clemson's Dabo Swinney.

What about the bottom? If we ignore BC's Jeff Hafley (who hasn't coached a game yet in Chestnut Hill) it leaves Miami's Manny Diaz dead last... ouch!

Top Rivalries We'd Like to See Return (RX; HM)

Top Rivalries We'd Like to See Return

From SaturdayBlitz's "College Football: Top 15 rivalry games we’d like to see return in 2020"

Conference realignment ended years of interstates and border war rivalries as an increased in-conference schedule reduced the amount of slots available for out of conference opponents. Those shifts in conferences also ended any attempt of rescheduling former foes due to long standing frustrations between athletic departments ranging from revenues pay outs to disagreements as old as the Civil War.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
(ACC-related)

19. Auburn vs. Georgia Tech
It’s likely the majority of college football fans have forgotten the times when the SEC included original founders Georgia Tech and Tulane who left in 1964 and 1965, respectively. Tech, once one of the SEC’s strongest programs, continues to play Georgia in the last week of the regular season but has lost many of their former southern rivalries.

With 92 appearances, Auburn is Georgia Tech’s second most common opponent and the rivalry remains one of the longest played in the history of the game. While Auburn leads the series 47-41-4, the Yellow Jackets have won the last two. The two schools played annually for a short time after Tech left the SEC, but have not played since 2005.

With Auburn playing North Carolina and Tech scheduling a future series with Alabama, there could be room on each program’s schedule to play again.

TOP 15
(ACC-related only; see link for the rest)

15. Virginia Tech vs. West Virginia
Games played: 52
Series record: West Virginia leads 28-23-1
Last played: 2017
Trophy: Black Diamond Trophy
Next meeting: 2021

West Virginia and Virginia Tech met annually from 1973-2005, two seasons after Virginia Tech left the former Big East for the ACC. The two met annually as part of the Big East but played each other prior to the conference formation in 1991. The Mountaineers owned the rivalry early, until Frank Beamer took over Virginia Tech in 1987. Virginia Tech, a perennial top-10 team in the 1990s and early-2000s were 10-5 from the 1990 until the series ended in 2005.

The 1990s and 2000s were the most competitive era of the rivalry with each program putting together strong seasons with big upsets. In 1997, both programs met in the top 25 with No. 19 Virginia Tech ending their three game winning streak at the hands of a No. 21 Mountaineer team.

30. Kansas City Chiefs: Andre Cisco, S, Syracuse
The Chiefs grab a safety to go with Tyrann Mathieu.

Over his first two seasons in college football, Cisco (6-0, 203) was a pure ball hawk for Syracuse. In 2019, he recorded 65 tackles with five interceptions and five passes broken up. Cisco had a huge 2018 season with seven interceptions, 18 passes broken up, one forced fumble and 60 tackles. The instinctive free safety could have a hard time duplicating that production, but if he continues to play well, those tapes will help him to be an early-rounder.

Graphic Shows How Dominant Of A Run Clemson Football Is On (thespun.com; Arend)

Few programs have been as dominant as the Clemson Tigers over the past decade. In fact, the Tigers are on a pattern of success that few programs have ever achieved.

Clemson and Alabama have been the top programs over the past 10 years. The Tigers have played in four and won two national championships in the past five seasons. Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide have appeared in seven and won five National Championship.

Neither program is going away. But it certainly appears Clemson’s trajectory could propel the program to eventually surpass Alabama whenever the program loses Nick Saban to retirement – which could happen within the next few years.

To boast their recent success, the Tigers posted an impressive graphic on Monday. Clemson is just the fourth program in college football history to “record at least nine consecutive 10-win seasons.” That active streak is tied for third overall. The Tigers sit behind Alabama (12 straight 10-win seasons from 2008-19) and Florida State (14 straight 10-win seasons from 1987-00).

The fun is in the winning—and we’ve been having a lot of fun!

— Clemson Football (@ClemsonFB) May 23, 2020

Fortunately for Clemson, there’s a good chance the Tigers continue their recent dominance. Swinney’s squad enters the 2020 season as one of the few national championship favorites. With Trevor Lawrence under center, the Tigers have a good a shot as any to bring home the title trophy.

Recent recruiting dominance also has Clemson set up for success for years to come.

Clemson is the new class of college football – and it certainly appears the Tigers are here to stay.

Clemson football: Top 5 players Tigers will face in 2020 (rubbingtherock.com; Benedict)

for gbo

The 2020 Clemson football roster is loaded with NFL talent but what about the opposition the Tigers will face this season?

Stop listening to what Clemson football detractors have to say about the Tigers 2020 schedule as there loads of NFL talent across the ACC, and yes even down in Columbia. Admitting that Clemson will face better competition than anyone hopes, is also admitting that they don’t face cupcakes every single week.

That is not to say that facing teams like Akron and Citadel aren’t cupcakes, because they are but there isn’t a team in the country that doesn’t have those on their schedule. When taking a look at the Clemson football 2020 schedule, there are five players that stand out among the rest that the Tigers are going to have to game plan and account for.

This list does not even account for the players at Miami, Pittsburgh, or North Carolina because Clemson will not face any of them until the 2020 ACC Championship game, so we will worry about those guys once it becomes clearer who Clemson will face.

1. Marvin Wilson – DT – FSU

Marvin Wilson is one of the best defensive tackles in the country. At 6-5 and 320 pounds he is a prototypical NFL defensive tackle and a load to handle on the interior.

Like Clemson football running back Travis Etienne, Wilson decided to forego NFL money and come back for one more year at FSU as he loved the message that new head coach Mike Norvell was preaching. Wilson was seen as a second to third-round choice in 2020 due to the depth of defensive tackle, but with another year of development, he will be the top defensive tackle taken in the 2021 NFL draft and will more than likely go in the Top 10 next April.

2. Israel Mukuamu – CB – South Carolina

The former three-star recruit out of Louisiana is one of those guys that was overlooked coming out of high school but made a choice to go play for a defensive-minded head coach in Will Muschamp.

https://georgiatech./news/where-collins-georgia-tech-stand-in-acc-national-rankings (georgiatech.; Johnson)

Georgia Tech landed their QB in the Class of 2021 on Monday afternoon when Sierra Canyon (Calf.) signal-caller

Chayden Peery
went public with his commitment to the program.

Peery is commitment No. 11 for Georgia Tech in the class of 2021, in a class now rated No.27 nationally, good for 6th in the ACC.

Jumping from tied for 9th to 6th in the rankings among the ACC means that Collins has passed Florida State, Boston College, Louisville, and Wake Forest, whom they were tied for 9th with prior to Peery's decision.

Pitt and UVA are within reach at 4th and 5th, respectively.

Heading into the month of June, the Yellow Jackets now will have at least 11 public commitments. After entering the month of May with just four commits, Georgia Tech fans are thrilled to go into the summer with the class looking like this:

Devin Leary Has a Fan in Former Clemson QB Tajh Boyd (SI; Friedlander)

If anyone knows what it takes to play quarterback in the ACC, it's Tajh Boyd.

During his four seasons at Clemson, he completed 64.3 percent of his passes for nearly 12,000 yards and 107 touchdowns with only 39 interceptions. He also rushed for 26 touchdowns while helping coach Dabo Swinney and the Tigers take the first steps toward becoming an elite college football program.

So when Boyd says he's a big fan of NC State's Devin Leary, it holds a lot of weight.

Now a college football analyst, Boyd is in the process of reviewing each of the ACC's returning starting quarterbacks on a Twitter series titled "Tape With Tajh." Here is what he had to say about Leary and the Wolfpack's prospects in 2019 with him under center:

"Pack fans, you had a rough go of it last year, I'm going to be honest. It was very dismal. The scoreboard was ugly most of the time and the stadium was less than half full and you guys lost six straight games. But I'm here to tell you that there's promise and there's hope going forward.

"I can't say that I would understand Dave Doeren's philosophy nor his approach for the first five games. When you look at the film and when you look at the film and the stat sheet, he had everybody throwing the football. He had (three) quarterbacks, he had wide receivers, some running backs tossing it around.

NC State boasts duo of PFF's Top 3 ACC players in trenches (247sports.com; Smith)

Last season was one to forget for NC State as a team, but there were several individuals who emerged as potential stars for the Wolfpack in the future. None more so than Alim McNeill at the nose tackle position and Ikem Ekwonu on the opposite side at the offensive tackle spot.

Earlier this week, Pro Football Focus announced that both were ranked inside the Top 4 at their respective positions in the ACC. McNeill came in at No. 3 among all ACC defensive tackles with a grade of 79.4 while Ekwonu ranked as the No. 3 overall offensive tackle in the ACC with a grade of 80.5.

McNeill is coming off a huge campaign in 2019 in which he finished with 28 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and two pass deflections. Over the course of his career, McNeill has had 13 tackles for loss and nine sacks, despite playing a position that doesn't get a ton of notoriety due to typically being tasked with stopping the run as opposed to rushing the passer.

Those numbers have come with McNeill playing 10 regular season games each year and only eight starts during his career -- all coming in the final eight games of the 2019 season. The 6-foot-2, 315-pound Raleigh native has already exceeded expectations through his first two years, but NC State Director of Strength & Conditioning Dantonio Burnette believes he has even more in store for the future.

"It's amazing to see he's only been a defensive lineman for two years," Burnette said. "He's going into year three as a d-lineman and this young man can be whatever he wants to be. I tell him that all the time.

Virginia football program takes advantage of virtual recruiting opportunities (dailyprogress.com; Conlin)

COVID-19 altered the routine of organizations across the country.

Social distancing and self-isolation led to changes in how groups go about their jobs. When possible, companies have turned to remote work. Zoom calls have become increasingly prevalent as teams hope to stay in frequent contact virtually.

Planned projects have been tossed aside in recent months for new tasks as professional organizations adapt to the changing landscape caused by the novel coronavirus.

The same is true for Bronco Mendenhall and the Virginia football program.

Usually, the Cavaliers would’ve spent March and April going through spring practices. Time would’ve been spent evaluating the roster and developing talent in preparation for a challenging 2020 schedule. Instead, Mendenhall and the Cavaliers have thrown themselves into virtual recruiting.

“We’ve just shifted a lot of our focus that would have been on our team for spring practice into the talent acquisition and the selection process,” Mendenhall said. “And so we put increased emphasis on it. We’ve designed protocols and processes that utilize technology, and we’ve worked really hard.”

The hard work has led to 13 verbal commitments in UVa’s 2021 recruiting class, including nine commitments since late March. This doesn’t even include the addition of three transfers since mid-April, including two graduate transfers with immediate eligibility in 2020.

According to 24/7 Sports, UVa is one of just three ACC teams with at least 13 commitments in its 2021 class. Miami and North Carolina are the other two. Clearly, the increased focus on adding recruits is leading to results.

Editor’s note: This is part of a 10-story series focusing on ACC football records. See the bottom of this story for a list of all the other content in the series.

On the occasion of his 46th birthday, “Big Jim” Tatum towered over college football.

He perfected the Split-T offense and rode it to four titles in three different conferences. He owned a national championship. He was a driving force in the creation of the Atlantic Coast Conference and its first Coach of the Year recipient. He lifted North Carolina, his moribund alma mater, to a consensus top-10 preseason ranking. He owned exactly 100 victories, 29 more than current Clemson coach Dabo Swinney at the same age.

He died the next day.

Tatum was many things to many people, but to this day he looms as the greatest “what if” in Tar Heels history.

“I think Tatum is really one of the people who was a central figure in the early years of the league,” said Wes Durham, long-time ACC television and radio personality. “I think his presence in the early years of the league was critical. What he did was pretty remarkable in many respects.”

https://www.syracuse.com/weather/20...-could-bring-record-setting-heat-tuesday.html (PS; Miller)

Once again, it seems like Central New York jumped from winter right into summer without much of a spring.

Two weeks ago, snow fell in Syracuse. On Tuesday, we could see a record temperature of 90-plus degrees. The current record for May 26 is 90, set in 2011. The National Weather Service says we could meet or exceed that, as it’s going to be mostly sunny and calm.

There’s a slight chance of thunderstorms after 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The weather will be warm and humid the rest of the week...

Surprised you posted a link to 'best fan bases by state' but didn't skip down to New York:

New York: Syracuse University
The Carrier Dome is known for basketball. Period, point-blank. But the football team is nothing to scoff at, and it has as loyal a fan base as many, many other elite-level programs across the country. Current head coach Dino Babers seems like a keeper, even though 2019 may have been a step backward for the program.
New York Honorable Mention: Army

Perhaps it was a foregone conclusion (who else are they going to pick in NY State?)
