Welcome to National Doughnut Day!

National Doughnut Day started in 1938[1] as a fund raiser for Chicago's The Salvation Army. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression, and to honor The Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.

Soon after the US entrance into World War I in 1917, The Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to France. The mission concluded that the needs of US enlisted men could be met by canteens/social centers termed "huts" that could serve baked goods, provide writing supplies and stamps, and provide a clothes-mending service. Typically, six staff members per hut would include four female volunteers who could "mother" the boys. These huts were established by The Salvation Army in the United States near army training centers.

About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, the two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of providing doughnuts. These are reported to have been an "instant hit", and "soon many soldiers were visiting The Salvation Army huts". Margaret Sheldon wrote of one busy day: "Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee."

Syracuse football projected to go bowling next season (itlh; Mlodzinski)

After falling short of lofty expectations last season, one analyst sees the Orange bouncing back next year. Here’s where Syracuse football may be bowling.

The 2019 season wasn’t all that kind to Syracuse football. After finishing 10-3 the year before, many experts foresaw the Orange competing for an ACC title. While the ‘Cuse brought back a lot of playmakers on both sides of the ball, a young offensive line and year one of Tommy DeVito under center made for some sighs during the season.

Even then, the Orange fought for a 5-7 record, one loss short of bowl eligibility. This also included winning two of three to close out the season, one being a blowout victory over Duke, and the other, a hard fought win over a Wake Forest team who finished at 8-5.

And while DeVito sure looked inconsistent at times, his 19 touchdowns to five interceptions does provide hope that with a more experienced offensive line this season, Syracuse may be able to get back over .500 when the 2020 season is all set and done.

Top 3 Home Wins in Syracuse Football History Part 2 – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Klein)

The Top 3 Syracuse home wins list continues with another blowout. The 27-point victory of Penn State in 1987 earned the third spot on the list. No. 2 goes to a win with a margin almost double the size, with the stakes twice as high.

2. SYRACUSE REPEATS AS BIG EAST CHAMPIONS

The Orange won the Big East Championship in 1996 and 1997. With the same core of Donovan McNabb and Kyle McIntosh returning, the stage was set for another conference title.

No. 19 Miami, stacked with 11 future pros including All-American Santana Moss and Reggie Wayne, stood in the way of just No. 21 Syracuse’s third Big East Championship. Miami had taken six of the last seven meetings, but the Orange rocked the Hurricanes 66-13 when it counted the most.

This game will forever be ingrained in the Donovan McNabb highlight reel just as much as the Syracuse history books. It was the quarterback’s final game in the Dome. After starting four years, scoring the most touchdowns in school history with 96 and throwing for 8,389 yards, second only to his predecessor Marvin Graves at the time, it was only fitting that a dominant career ended in domination.

McNabb set the tone with a six play, 82-yard drive, capped off by an 11-yard touchdown pass to Steve Johnson. The quarterback’s fellow senior also blew the game open with a 100-yard kickoff return to make it 24-7 at the end of the first quarter.

From there, McNabb was running downhill. The conference offensive player of the year bursted for a 51 yard touchdown on a QB draw. He finished with three touchdowns on the ground and two in the air.

Head Coach Paul Pasqualoni pulled McNabb with 11 minutes left for a standing ovation in front of nearly 50,000 fans.

”This is something I’ll always cherish,” McNabb said. ”It’s something you see on TV — Sammy Sosa or Mark McGwire hitting a home run. I just want everyone to know how much I’ve enjoyed it here.”

There were certainly more competitive games to choose from. Syracuse’s 18-point comeback against Virginia Tech en route to a 28-26 win comes to mind. But the Miami game meant more in the grand scheme of things for the program and McNabb’s legacy.

FSU's Norvell sorry after star player accused coach of lying (fltimes.com; AP; Russo)

Florida State's Mike Norvell apologized Thursday after a star player accused the coach of lying about personally connecting with every football player to discuss the police killing of George Floyd and ensuing protests against racial injustice.

After a team meeting early Thursday involving players and coaches, defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, who called out his first-year coach the night before on Twitter, took to social media again to declare the matter settled.

“Took a stand we got what we wanted & we are moving forward,” Wilson wrote on Instagram. He also posted a nearly four-minute video detailing how the team plans to register to vote and raise funds for organizations that help send young black people to college and aid poor children in the Tallahassee, Florida, area.

Wilson, who is black, said Wednesday night on Twitter that he and his teammates were “outraged” by Norvell's characterization of having individually touched base with every player last weekend.

Norvell released a statement saying that was a mistake. “Particularly at this time, words are important, and I’m sorry,” he said.

Florida State athletic director David Coburn, making a scheduled appearance on a call with the school's Board of Trustees on Thursday morning, told the board about the online meeting involving the players and Norvell, who has been in the job for about six months.

ACC Football: The best quarterback in each program’s history (saturdayblitz.com; Gershon)

We look at the best to play under center in the history of all 14 ACC football programs. Some of these guys are stars to this day.

The ACC may be best known for their college hoops, but with the recent additions of several elite Big East programs, some of college football’s top quarterbacks represent the current league programs.

Several college football legends also became NFL Pro Bowlers and some even became Hall of Famers.

All 14 ACC programs have seen at least one-star quarterback come in and out of their program, making it hard to choose just one to recognize as the best in school history.

Like the SEC, these rankings are based solely on college-level performance and win production rather than taking into account NFL resumes.

Here are the best quarterbacks that each ACC program has ever seen.

22 DOUG FLUTIE QB 1981-84

Known for one of the greatest plays in ACC football history

Before both College Football and the NFL became pass-heavy, Doug Flutie became a star passer at Boston College.

Flutie is Boston College’s all-time passing leader with10,579 career passing yards and ranks second in program history with 67 touchdown passes.

After finishing as a Heisman Trophy finalist in 1983, Flutie took home the award in 1984 after throwing for 3,454 yards and 27 touchdowns with 379 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles went 10-2 that season and defeated Houston in the Cotton Bowl.

In the Eagles win over Miami that season, Flutie made one of college football’s most historic plays when he scrambled and threw a Hail Mary to Gerard Phelan to win the game.

On top of the 1984 Heisman Trophy, Flutie took home the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, Davey O’Brien Award, UPI Player of the Year and unanimous All-American honors.

He went onto win three Grey Cups in the Canadian Football League and was named an NFL Pro Bowler and the Comeback Player of the Year in 1998.

5 DONOVAN MCNABB QB 1995-98

When Syracuse was a Big East, not ACC football, school

Donovan McNabb is easily the best quarterback in Syracuse‘s program history. The dual-threat signal-caller was a four-year starter for the Orange, who never lost more than four games in a season.

McNabb was named first-team All-Big East three times and earned Big East Offensive Player of the Decade award. He finished his career with 8,389 passing yards and a program-record 77 touchdown passes. He also added 1,561 rushing yards and 19 rushing yards.

His best individual season came as a Junior in 1997 when he threw for 2,488 yards and 20 touchdowns while rushing for 404 yards and six touchdowns. While posting impressive stats, he led the Orange to a 9-4 season capped off with a trip to the Fiesta Bowl.

McNabb went onto be drafted second overall in the 1999 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was named a Pro Bowler six times. He retired after stints with the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings.

Clemson’s new football show is ‘a natural fit for all of us’ (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

Mark Childress was simply trying to think outside the box when he came up with an idea Clemson football fans will love.

The idea is to tell the stories of some Clemson’s greatest football games. After pitching his idea to WSPA, Clemson Athletics, in conjunction with Clemson Sports & Campus Marketing, picked it up and Childress’ idea will debut Saturday on WSPA in the Greenville-Spartanburg television market, as well as all around the state of South Carolina.

“It just seemed like a natural fit for all of us for a number of reasons to try and get some fresh content out there for Clemson fans during this break of no sports,” Childress said to The Clemson Insider on Thursday.

The series is called Clemson’s Greatest Games and will premiere Saturday at 7:30 p.m., as the first show goes back to the Tigers’ dramatic come-from-behind victory over Syracuse in 2018 at Death Valley. The 12-episode series of 30-minute shows highlights some of the best regular season football games from recent history with special guest commentary from notable Clemson on-air personalities, staff, and former players on a weekly basis.

This week’s show will have interviews from former Clemson linebacker Kendall Joseph, safety Tanner Muse, as well as quarterback Chase Brice, who came off the bench of an injured Trevor Lawrence to engineer the comeback.

“It has been received well,” said Childress, who will also host the show. “We all love re-watching these old games and that is kind of where the inspiration came from. This is not a new idea or the greatest idea of all time, but I think it is a great one for Clemson right now.

Here are some videos to evoke good memories of great ACC non-conference wins...

ACC Football Replay:
Texas A&M vs. Clemson
September 7, 2019

No. 1 Clemson wanted to leave little doubt it was better than No. 12 Texas A&M. In the process, the Tigers left some doubts that anyone could challenge the defending national champs in another title run.

Trevor Lawrence threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score and the top-ranked Tigers won their record-tying 17th straight game with a 24-10 victory over the Aggies.

Many circled this game as the best chance to take down Clemson, given Texas A&M's nail-biting, 28-26 loss to the Tigers in 2018. But it was Clemson's relentless playmaking on offense and defense that held the Aggies to their fewest points in a game since a 19-7 loss at LSU in 2015.

UCF vs. Pittsburgh: The Pitt Panthers complete an incredible comeback to defeat Central Florida. With 56 seconds left quarterback Kenny Picket caught a ball in the end zone to tie the game at 34, and after converting the extra point the Panthers took a 35-34 lead, and that would be the final score.
