Welcome to Miniature Golf Day!

Miniature Golf Day celebrates the miniaturized version of golf, also known as mini-golf, minigolf, crazy golf, or putt-putt. Miniature golf was invented in the late 19th century in Scotland, likely as a way to allow women to golf, as they weren't supposed to raise their arms above shoulder level. The game focused on putting, which kept arms low.

In the late 19th century the sport crossed the Atlantic, and following World War I it became became very popular in the United States. The Thistle Dhu course opened in North Carolina in 1916, ushering in the era of the standardized miniature golf course. With the invention of an artificial green in 1922, the miniature golf boom started, and lasted until the late 1930's when the Great Depression helped to dampen the popularity of the sport. Improvements in obstacles on the green by the Taylor Brothers and Lomma Brothers in the 1950's may have helped the sport to once again gain popularity.

The game is usually played on AstroTurf, carpet, or concrete. There are regularly nine or eighteen holes, just like in traditional golf. But, unlike traditional golf, there usually is no more than a ten yard distance from tee to cup. The layout of the course is set up in such a way as to many times require bank shots, and there commonly are tunnels, and obstacles—such as windmills—that must be navigated around.

Axe: SU football fans' faith in Dino Babers’ offense tested again (PS; $; Axe)

It’s a little harder to ask for these days, but Syracuse head coach Dino Babers is still going to do it.

Following Syracuse football’s 21-10 loss to Pittsburgh, the Orange are 0-2 and facing a must-win game at the new-and-improved Carrier Dome on Saturday against Georgia Tech.

Cue up the George Michael.

“You gotta have faith,” Babers said of his team’s offensive woes. “You’re definitely wishing some positive things would happen on certain calls and you’re trying to get away from some calls that maybe people aren’t recognizing or seeing it the same way you’re seeing it and the ball is going in different places than what you know it should be going.”

Babers is fond of movie references so I’ll provide one here from one of my favorites, “Ghostbusters.”

Faced with the reality of being tossed from their comfy gig at a local college, Ray Stanz turned to his co-worker, Peter Venkman, to inform him that “I’ve worked in the private sector. They expect results.”

Syracuse football opens as 8-point home underdog against rebuilding Georgia Tech (PS; $; Carlson)

Georgia Tech was picked to be the worst team in the ACC during the league’s preseason poll.

But the Yellow Jackets opened as eight-point favorites for their Week 3 game in the Carrier Dome, according to the betting website BetOnline.com.

The betting line reflects a horrific start to the season for Syracuse, which was predicted to finish 14th out of the 15 teams when the year began, and a relatively hopeful one for Georgia Tech, the only team predicted to be worse.

Syracuse (0-2, 0-2 ACC) has opened the season against a fairly difficult schedule but has scored just one touchdown in two games. The Orange rank last in the ACC in points scored, total offense, rushing yards, passing yards and sacks allowed.

Those were numbers that might have been expected from Georgia Tech (1-1, 1-0), a team that is just over a year removed from running the triple-option and enduring a transition that is expected to be difficult.

After Pitt dunked on SU, can we call any game a lay-up? (stock watch) (PS; $; Mink)

Syracuse football is 0-2 after a 21-10 loss at Pittsburgh on Saturday at Heinz Field.

This week’s stock watch takes a look at the players and themes rising and falling heading into next week’s home opener against Georgia Tech.

Stock down: Banking on the schedule lightening up

Syracuse returns home for a month before its next road trip to Clemson.

The next three games against Georgia Tech, Duke and Liberty provide an opportunity to show whether SU can regroup and contend for a winning season.

Georgia Tech won three games a year ago as coach Geoff Collins sunk his teeth into a teardown of the triple-option and subsequent rebuild.

SU licked Duke by 43 last November and shut out Liberty in last year’s opener.

New week yields similar results for Syracuse football - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

For the second straight game, Syracuse’s defense gave them a chance to win, but their offense could not hold up their end of the bargain and the Orange fell at #25 Pittsburgh, 21-10. The Panthers (2-0, 1-0 ACC) missed a pair of field goals, botched another attempt on a bad hold, fumbled three times, and threw an interception, but SU (0-2, 0-2) simply could not make anything happen on offense, particularly in the second half.

Syracuse ran 31 plays in the second half, totaling a mere 52 yards. The fourth quarter was particularly gruesome, as they gained one yard on 13 plays. In total, the Orange mustered 171 yards in the game, averaging only 2.95 yards per play. Once again, the offensive line was a major culprit, giving up seven sacks in the game.

Their defensive mates played admirably, giving Pitt 342 yards on 80 plays, just 4.28 yards per snap. That mark, over the course of the full 2019 season, would have placed SU second in the nation.

Those offensive troubles showed on the second Syracuse possession. After getting great field position at the Panther 35 after a good punt return from Nykeim Johnson, the Orange offense lost four yards before punting.

The Good, Bad and Ugly: Niko and Matt address Syracuse football's 21-10 loss to Pitt (cnycentral.com; video; Tamurian & Hauswirth)

The Syracuse University football team dropped to 0-2 overall on the season following Saturday's 21-10 loss on the road against the No. 25 Pittsburgh Panthers.

Just like last week's 31-6 loss to North Carolina, the Orange had several opportunities to take lead, but was not able to do so.

Below is the good, bad and the ugly from Saturday's loss at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

Fizz Film Review: What’s Wrong with the Offense? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Eads)

By now, you’ve heard the news. Syracuse lost to #25 Pitt 21-10. The defense was stellar once again and received an excellent grade in the postgame report card. The problem with this SU team through two games is the offense.

Syracuse fans collectively blame head coach Dino Babers, offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, and quarterback Tommy DeVito. In some cases, it’s the coaches not putting the players in positions to succeed. In others though, it’s on the players to execute. We know the defense is dominant, and if the offense can just do anything, this team could be 2-0.

Let’s dissect the offensive problems with film from the Pitt game.

Play 1:

It’s 3rd and 10, and SU is in a formation with trips [three receivers to the] right. Pitt is playing soft in coverage. DeVito takes the snap and scans the entirety of the field, looks at every receiver and doesn’t pull the trigger. Three of the four wideouts were open and he didn’t throw to a single one of them. This one’s on the quarterback, but the coaches need to stop keeping running backs in on pass protection. It’s a waste of personnel.

Syracuse Football: Linebacker Mikel Jones is off to a stellar start in 2020 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football sophomore linebacker Mikel Jones is crushing things so far in the fall term, a bright spot in the Orange defensive line-up.

Despite its 0-2 start and anemic offense, the Syracuse football defense has proven solid, if not relatively strong, and a big part of that success is sophomore linebacker Mikel Jones.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Jones, whose hometown is in Miami, notched his first career interception on Sept. 12, when the Orange fell to then-No. 18 North Carolina, 31-6, in the 2020 term opener on the road in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Then, a week later, as the ‘Cuse lost at No. 25 Pittsburgh, 21-10, from Heinz Field, Jones registered both a fumble recovery and a second interception of the fall stanza.

Syracuse Football: Not time for QB change yet, but it’s getting closer to one (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football is 0-2 and has scored one touchdown, and some believe that the starting quarterback job is now up for grabs.

Syracuse football starting quarterback Tommy DeVito, a redshirt junior, has really struggled through two games. Then again, as the Orange has gone 0-2 and managed only 16 points, the entire offense has looked woeful.

So that begs the question: should the ‘Cuse make a change at quarterback, benching DeVito in favor of back-up Rex Culpepper, a redshirt senior, or another Orange reserve QB?

I took that question to social media, and Syracuse fanatics on Facebook and Twitter, for the most part, are pretty adamant that the ‘Cuse has nothing to lose in putting Culpepper or another quarterback in ahead of DeVito.

For me, personally, I still think that this is DeVito’s job, but another stinker performance this coming Saturday afternoon in the home opener versus Georgia Tech would absolutely change my perspective.

Is Notre Dame football destined to face Clemson in ACC title game? (saturdayblitz.com; Kay)

Notre Dame football has high expectations and aspirations for the 2020 season but does that include a matchup with Clemson in the ACC title game?

Notre Dame prides itself on being independent but decided to join the ACC due to the need for a full slate of games for its 2020 schedule.

With the Fighting Irish joining the ACC (not as a permanent member for football) the league has 15 teams and no divisions this season. Notre Dame will play a 10-game conference schedule as it already faced and defeated Duke in its home opener. The Fighting Irish played their lone non-conference game in Week 3 as they defeated South Florida.

Talking Turkey Goes over the Week in the ACC the Personnel Issues and Other Hokie Events (gobblercountry.com; Manning and Fahvaag)

Well, our first big preview podcast and we had nothing much to preview. There were some events that needed to be discussed, and the ACC has actually started playing football, not that we’d have known that. Our first game is going to be against the North Carolina State Wolfpack at 8:00 PM on September 26th. That’s nearly a full month after our usual start, and has been due to two COVID hits, one on NC State’s part, and the next by mutual agreement between UVA and Tech. It seems to have been related to a post matriculation positive test increase on the Blacksburg campus. We were getting some grief for it, but UVA is now going through an increase of their own roughly two weeks after they started classes. It just seems to be an unfortunate feature of this season.

GAME WEEK Has Started

The Hokies are healthy, and ready to get their normal game week activities started. They just had their first (well 2nd first) NC State focused practice session and officially opened the week with a notice.

7 ACC teams in new AP Top 25 Poll for the 2nd straight week - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Seven ACC football teams landed in last week’s AP Top 25 Poll. One week later, all seven of those teams remain in the poll, albeit with some movement, too.

Following a blowout road win over Louisville, led by quarterback D’Eriq King, Miami jumps up five spots to No. 12. Louisville falls from 18 to No. 24.

    • No. 1 Clemson
    • No. 7 Notre Dame
    • No. 11 North Carolina
    • No. 12 Miami
    • No. 20 Virginia Tech
    • No. 21 Pittsburgh
    • No. 24 Louisville
The Clemson Tigers remain No. 1, with a slight edge over Alabama, which starts its 2020 season next week against Missouri.

Just outside of the poll: two additional ACC teams received votes — Virginia and Boston College.

Check out this epic fixer upper: Historic Syracuse mansion can be yours for $25K (photos) (PS; $; Moriarty)

A historic Syracuse mansion can be had for just $25,000, but it comes with a catch.

The Greater Syracuse Land Bank has put the George Whedon home at 366 W. Onondaga St. up for sale for $25,000.

But it only wants offers from buyers who are willing to fix it up — and it warns that it will likely take more than $1 million to restore the 4,800-square-foot home to its former grandeur.

“Our goal is to see it put back into proper use and get it back on the tax rolls,” said Katelyn Wright, the land bank’s executive director.

The home was built in 1892 for Dr. George Whedon, one of Syracuse’s most successful doctors. At the time, West Onondaga Street was a wealthy neighborhood, with rows of mansions.

The neighborhood fell onto hard times and the wealthy moved out decades ago, but many of the old mansions still stand in various states of repair.

Though there is no documentation on who designed it, the architect is believed to have been Archimedes Russell, the famous Syracuse architect who designed the Onondaga County Court House. It was actually a second home for Whedon. His first, a brick home that still stands at 672 W. Onondaga St., was designed by Russell and has many similarities to the one at 366 W. Onondaga St.

if you are going to have some game film review you should gave some one review it correctly..

1) 3 Wrs were not open and since we don't know which is the correct first read I would argue only 1 was ever really open before the all collapsed
2) they sent 6 and we blocked 6. the reality is that's what you want to have happen are we now saying if a team sends 6 its hopeless and give up going for first downs on 3rd and plays?

3) it was an out an up, he can throw to the TE on the out but he isnt gonna be there to catch it. I would argue this shows what should happen in this offense. we ran a shallow cross, the safety/lb ran with the cross we then followed that with an out with the TE with the pump the LB was already trailing and the safety will have to cover the out , there is no one deep on the up.. the film is too tight to show how the safety came up on the play if he did, but if blocked its a potential home run play,

ACC Power Rankings: Is Syracuse football the worst team in the conference? (PS; $; Carlson)

Among the ACC teams that have lost all of their games, three have experienced a similar start to the season.

They’ve been good on defense and very bad on offense. Syracuse fans know all too well that the Orange is one of those teams. They’re not so different from Florida State and Duke. Wake Forest’s biggest issues, meanwhile, appear to be on defense.

Those four teams round out the bottom of the league this week and, unfortunately for Syracuse fans, the only real question is whether the Orange belongs at the very bottom or not.

1. Clemson

Record: 2-0 (1-0)
Last week’s ranking: 1
Last week’s result: Win 49-0 vs. Citadel

Cancer nearly took his life. Now Culpepper is easiest story to root for in SU football (PS; Mink)

Let’s go back two years, to the second week in a hellish cycle of chemotherapy with a PICC line dripping poison into their son’s right arm. Only then can the joy Brad and Monica Culpepper felt watching their son deliver one of the best moments in this young college football season be fully understood.

We think we know the Rex Culpepper story, how he captured our love by tossing a touchdown during Syracuse’s spring game a month after going public with his testicular cancer diagnosis, and how he again minted a moment to remember with a 69-yard touchdown pass Saturday afternoon at Pittsburgh.
