New details: SU game delayed after football team members get conflicting COVID-19 test results (localsyr.com; Donovan)

At a briefing on Monday, the Onondaga County Executive explained to NewsChannel 9 the behind-the-scenes details about the coronavirus testing that delayed the Syracuse Orange’s home-opening football game on Saturday.

Fans watching on television Saturday were confused when the broadcasters had to fill time and did their best to explain the reason for the delay.

Kickoff in the newly-remodeled Carrier Dome happened nearly 30 minutes later.

Syracuse University’s athletic department confirmed a retest for three of its team members.

At his briefing Monday, County Executive Ryan McMahon explains that routine tests administered to players and coaches came back with conflicting results for the people eventually retested.

“You had a potential false positive because it looked like it could have been a positive result on a Wednesday. That same person tested negative on Friday and so out of an abundance of caution, we had a rapid test done before the game and that person tested negative again,” McMahon explains.

Film review: Syracuse’s 5 forced turnovers vs. Georgia Tech (DO; Emerman)

Even without star safety Andre Cisco, Syracuse’s defense added five turnovers to its FBS-leading 10 in Saturday’s 37-20 win over Georgia Tech.

Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Back of the Week Trill Williams, as well as Ja’Had Carter, Rob Hanna and Josh Black, all came up with interceptions, and linebacker Steve Linton recovered a fumble. But the impetus of most of the turnovers began with its pass rush.

In this week’s film review, here’s how Syracuse turned the Yellow Jackets over:

Blitz beats the read-option

Against a read-option look, Syracuse brings six rushers with a middle blitz to stuff a run. Jeff Sims instead pulls the ball down and drops back to pass, but Kingsley Jonathan hits his arm as he winds up. The ball pops straight up and into defensive lineman Black’s arms for his first pick in his five-year SU career.

Fizz Report Card: Syracuse Rolls Past Georgia Tech – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

Wow, well Syracuse did it. After a horrid start to the season, the Orange actually won a game, and in convincing fashion. Syracuse christened the newly renovated Dome with a big win over Georgia Tech last weekend. A balanced offensive attack and an impressive defensive showing led to the victory. Some positional units shined, some were still a little worrisome. So, let’s break out our red markers and give some grades in the classic Fizz Report Card.

QUARTERBACK: B-

Tommy DeVito actually looked competent in the pocket against Georgia Tech. He threw 13-for-24 and 194 yards, including two touchdown tosses. The redshirt junior did throw an interception on a really bad decision, however. But those stats aren’t even the most important ones. Here is what actually matters– DeVito was only sacked once. Yeah, once. After coming off back-to-back games where he got sacked seven times each, the Yellow Jackets only got to him one time. Now, part of that is on the offensive line, which we’ll get to, but part of it is on DeVito’s quicker decision making. He looked much more comfortable and was primarily making the correct reads.

Heading into the Georgia Tech game, we thought there may be a quarterback controversy. On Saturday, DeVito made sure to end those rumors. It is his job.

RUNNING BACKS: A-

The Orange may have found their running back of the future. Sean Tucker put on a show against Georgia Tech last weekend. The true freshman rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. He looked explosive in the backfield and was very decisive when challenged. To put it simply, Tucker didn’t look like a true freshman. You may not have known his name going into the season, but you should probably learn it because he will be around for a while.

The one issue with the running backs is besides Tucker, no one else stepped up. Granted, Tucker was getting the bulk of the snaps, but Jawhar Jordan and Markenzy Pierre were pretty much nonexistent. Dino Babers usually likes to use multiple backs and swap them in and out, so those two will have to step it up a bit to help out Tucker.

Bones’ Biggest Takeaways: Seems Like a Whole New Squad in Week 3 – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Bonaparte)

It seemed like Syracuse rolled out an entirely different squad on Saturday against Georgia Tech. A statement win to say the least in Week 3 for the Orange, here are a few takeaways from the victory:

Syracuse Has Found Its Feature Back

Sean Tucker appeared out of what seems like thin air. The Maryland native has shot into relevancy as a freshman. After averaging nearly 6 yards per carry in a short stint against Pitt, Tucker earned himself a chance to shine against the Yellow Jackets, and shine he did. The freshman rushed for 112 yards on 24 carries and reached the end zone twice, acting as the center-piece for the Orange offense. Going forward this squad could very well be a run-oriented team, as it seems Syracuse has found a diamond in the rough. Tommy DeVito looked fine, but what does it matter if the running back position just got a makeover. Don’t expect to be seeing Jawhar Jordan or Markeny Pierre nearly as often going forward, this offense is about to be all Sean Tucker, all the time.

This Defense Is Even Better Than We Thought

Jeff Sims, while yes, a freshman, is nowhere near a bad quarterback. Syracuse fans should be very happy the SU defense was able to essentially make him and his offense a non-factor. The level of play this secondary showed on Saturday is something to be excited for. Four interceptions, and 75 tackles is nothing to scoff at. Syracuse quietly has one of the better defenses in the ACC, and with that defense could start to throw some wins together and climb the ACC rankings. Keep in mind that secondary was stellar without Andre Cisco. Where there’s depth, there’s success, and the SU secondary has plenty of depth.

This Team Has A Chance To Make Something Happen

The first two weeks of this season didn’t make the Orange football program look very good. However, their win on Saturday showed you shouldn’t give up on them just yet. There’s definitely talent on this roster, if they can utilize it well, the wins will come. There was improvement in most departments. Just one sack suffered by DeVito shows both his pocket awareness, and this offensive line are improving. Taj Harris wasn’t the only get being targeted which shows Sterling Gilbert and DeVito are starting to gel a little bit better. This front 7 can still use some work, but there’s always going to be something to improve on. The bottom line is, you shouldn’t give up on this team yet.

Georgia Tech Football: Takeaways from Jackets loss 37-20 loss to Syracuse (yellowjackedup.com; Callaghan-Croley)

For the second straight week, Georgia Tech’s sloppy play ended up being too much to overcome and led to a blowout loss for the Yellow Jackets.

All of the good feelings from Georgia Tech’s season-opening victory over Florida State are most likely gone. On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets dropped their second game of the season in a 37-20 loss to the Syracuse Orange. For the Yellow Jackets it was another poor and sloppy game that shows that while the Jackets have a bright future, plenty of work still has to be done.

No.1: Way too sloppy

The Jackets were once again sloppy on Saturday in their loss to Syracuse and that’s putting it kindly. The Jackets finished the game with five turnovers and 15 penalties. Both numbers are inexcusable by any means. Geoff Collins and the rest of the coaching staff need to find a fix to the turnovers and penalties fast, or this season will get mighty ugly for the Yellow Jackets. When you look at the Yellow Jackets last two games, they’ve turned the ball over 10 times and have committed 22 penalties for 153-yards.

No.2: What to do with Sims at quarterback…

Arguably the biggest takeaway to me is the fact that it looks like the game is moving too fast for Jeff Sims. Sims has a ton of talent and potential but if you’re the Jackets coaching staff, you have to consider seeing someone else at quarterback against Louisville in two weeks. But that would be a hard decision as you don’t want to ruin Sims confidence but at the same time, turning the ball over at the rate he is, isn’t going to do his confidence any favors either.

No.3: Keep feeding the running backs

As the Yellow Jackets quarterback situation still is a major question, the running back room is one place the Jackets don’t have any questions. That room for the Jackets is not just their best room but it’s one of the most talented running back groups in the entire country. This past weekend against Syracuse, the Jackets running backs averaged 5.6 yards per carry, totaling 238-yards on 42 carries.

Going forward, the Yellow Jackets need to continue feeding the running backs both on the ground and through the air especially Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs against Syracuse was once again spectacular with 131 yards from scrimmage on 20 touches. That doesn’t include his 44 yards on kick returns putting his total up to 175-yards. He’s by far the Jackets best player on either side of the field and he’s only a true freshman. The Jackets need to maintain the 20 touches per game for Gibbs as a minimum and really could push that number closer to 25-30 touches per game.

One Liners…

4. Stop blitzing David Curry…. he rarely gets close to the quarterback and it leaves a huge part of the field open. It’s simply not in his game.

5. Despite only allowing one sack, it was a pretty dismal performance from the offensive line, it must improve going forward.

6. Perhaps they should never try to kick the ball….The kicking struggles are truly baffling at this point.

7. Overall, the loss is right up there with the losses to The Citadel and Temple last season as the worse of the Geoff Collins era.

Doeren expects lead tacklers to return from injury for NC State’s game against Pitt (wavy.com; Gibson)

N.C. State can point to some positives despite coming off a 21-point loss to Virginia Tech.

Khalid Martin’s scary looking injury is not nearly as bad as first feared.

“Khalid Martin was back with us today and I’m very happy he’s back,” said N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren. “It was a scary moment, obviously. All the scans, all the X-rays, all the imaging have been positive, now it’s just a matter of returning and how long that takes.”

And while Martin will be out this weekend for the Pitt game, two key members of the Wolfpack defense, though, will return.

“I think getting Payton (Wilson) back is helpful,” Doeren said. “Our top two tacklers are Payton and Tanner (Ingle) and we missed them in a run heavy game.”

N.C. State gave up more than 300 yards rushing to the Hokies.

Offensively the Pack could not keep up with Hokies in the 45-24 loss but will head into this weekend’s game with a bit of momentum.

John Swofford Has Dramatically Changed his Legacy in His Final Year as ACC Commissioner (shakinthesouthland.com; Kantor)

John Swofford announced this June that the 2020-21 athletic year would be his final year as the ACC Commissioner. With all the twists and turns the year has presented, his veteran leadership has proved far more valuable than one could have imagined. In fact, his final year may prove to be the one that defines much of his career’s legacy.

Before becoming the conference commissioner, Swofford was a QB and DB for UNC in 1970 and 1971. After getting a graduate degree from Ohio, Swofford worked under Virginia AD (and future ACC Commissioner) Gene Corrigan before landing a job back at his alma mater. In 1980, he rose to be the Athletic Director for the Tar Heels at just 31 years old. He held that position until 1997 when he took on the leadership role for the entire conference.

Back then, the conference was composed of just nine schools: Georgia Tech, Florida State and the seven remaining charter members (the eighth charter member, U of SC, left in 1971). There was no conference championship game and Florida State was riding a five-year conference title streak. A lot has changed in the over two decades of John Swofford’s leadership.

Throughout all that change, Clemson fans have been somewhat sour on his performance in the role. The negativity is often focused on him being too Tobacco Road-centric and focusing too much on basketball (at the expense of football). Here’s a sampling of Clemson fans’ ire (via 2013 Reddit post):

Harvin Once Again Tabbed as One of “Ray’s 4” (ramblinwreck.com)

For the third-straight week, Georgia Tech senior Pressley Harvin III has been included on the Ray Guy Award “Ray’s 4” list, which recognizes the nation’s top four punters of the week.

Harvin’s latest honor comes on the heels of him averaging 49.3 yards over seven punts on Saturday at Syracuse. Three of his seven punts traveled 50 or more yards ,three pinned the Orange inside their own 20 yard line and only one was able to be returned. His spectacular day was highlighted by a 64-yard punt in the second quarter that was the second-longest of his career, behind only a 70-yarder the previous Saturday against UCF. The 64-yard masterpiece at Syracuse carried the full 64 yards in the air, landed inside the 5 yard line, checked up and bounced out of bounds at the 4.

10. Boston College

Record: 2-0 (1-0 ACC)

Last game: won vs. Texas State, 24-21
Next game: vs. UNC (Saturday)

A noon kick at sleepy Alumni Stadium would be a trap game under normal circumstances for a top-25 opponent.

11. Syracuse

Record: 1-2 (1-2 ACC)
Previous ranking: 15
Last game: won vs. Georgia Tech, 37-20
Next game: vs. Duke (Oct. 10)

Feel-good win for the Orange and Poor Tommy DeVito, who suddenly look like they could put a streak together with Duke and Liberty up next.

ACC Football Power Rankings for September 28 (fightingirishwire.usatoday.com; Shepkowski)

...
15. Duke 0-3 (0-3)

This one could probably go one of two ways as it’s been a disastrous start for a pair of teams in the ACC and you’ll see the other in moments, don’t worry. The Blue Devils have not only gotten off to an 0-3 start but have committed more turnovers than they’ve scored touchdowns to date and with Virginia Tech waiting next week, 0-4 is looking likely.

14. Florida State 0-2 (0-2)

It doesn’t get much worse than watching your biggest conference rival return to glory by beating your brains in on national television like how Florida State was treated during their Saturday night trip to Miami.
There are a bunch of issues here and allowing 52 points is clearly one of them but how is that for brutal?
Florida State has allowed nine sacks through just two games while recording just one themselves.
The good news for Florida State is that Jacksonville State shows up on the schedule this week and that should mean an easy victory.

13. Wake Forest 0-2 (0-2)

Wake Forest is coming off a sudden off week after their game against Notre Dame was rescheduled for December 12 after a COVID-19 outbreak with the Fighting Irish football team.
Wake Forest took NC State to the wire a week ago before ultimately losing the shootout while getting beat up by top-ranked Clemson in their opener.
Like Florida State, an easy first victory of the season should be coming for the Demon Deacons as they host the Campbell State Camels on Saturday night.

12. Georgia Tech 1-2 (1-1)

It was a surprise Week One victory for the Yellow Jackets at Florida State but since then they’ve had a reality check of a second half against UCF and were beat up by what had previously been an unimpressive Syracuse team before Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets get a bye week before they resume action on October 10 versus a struggling Louisville squad.

11. NC State 1-1 (1-1)

Final from Blacksburg pic.twitter.com/mL8bLcv8zQ
— NC State Football (@PackFootball) September 27, 2020
After a shootout win that got their season started against Wake Forest, North Carolina State was unable to slow down Virginia Tech in what was their season opener this weekend.
Allowing 45 points per week is no way to win with any regularity but that shouldn’t be the case when the Wolfpack take on Pitt this week. However, Pitt’s defensive front is going to be a problem in that one.

After getting by a COVID-19 scare early Saturday the Orange were in doubt of evening playing against Georgia Tech but they did and despite looking bad in their first two games, erupted for 37 points which are 21 more than they had in their two games combined coming in.
With Duke, Liberty, Boston College and North Carolina State all remaining on the schedule, perhaps a bowl berth isn’t entirely out of question.

Pitt's ACC Odds Shortening after 3-0 Start (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Saunders)

North Carolina football has added Western Carolina to its 2020 schedule... he two in-state rivals will play on Friday, Dec. 11 in Chapel Hill. The game fills a hole in the schedule after the Sept. 19 game with Charlotte was canceled due to the impact of COVID-19 contact tracing after several members of the 49ers were placed in quarantine leading up to the game.

Syracuse councilor stalls vote on JMA project, fights plan to move homeless shelter (PS; $; Knauss)

A city councilor who represents Syracuse’s West Side has temporarily blocked the city from selling property for a major development on the South Side because the project will likely result in moving a homeless shelter to a working-class area in his district.

Councilor Pat Hogan conceded that his maneuver today might achieve nothing more than a brief delay. But he vowed to continue his opposition to opening a new homeless shelter at 501 W. Genesee St., just west of downtown.

At today’s council meeting, Hogan objected to taking a vote on the city’s plan to give up two block-long sections of city streets to support JMA Wireless' development of a 5G wireless equipment factory in a distressed neighborhood south of downtown.

Hogan’s objection automatically tabled the vote until the next council meeting -- when it will likely be approved.

"It’ll pass,'' Hogan predicted.

Still dont know that Jordan being hurt makes Tucker the feature back. Tucker doesnt do all the things Jordan does in space.

What has he actually ever done "in space"? People have really crowned this kid. Tucker is 10x tougher to tackle and Jordan may never have time to get in space, not saying it's his fault but we clearly need a battering ram not a kid that gets tackled as easily as Jordan.

so what happned the 2nd half with Tucker than we he managed 10 yds?

That is a really great article about Mr Tucker.
He’s repeating his own history of coming in, playing well, and locking down the RB1 job.

It’s remarkable company he’s in, as only 1 of 4 true Freshman at Syracuse to rush for over 100 yards vs a FBS opponent.
Some other guys named Joe Morris & Delone Carter also on that list. ;)
