Welcome to Election Day!

Election Day is a day set aside in the United States for the general election of federal public officials, which include the president, vice president, and members of Congress. It takes place on "the Tuesday next after the first Monday in the month of November," which translates to the first Tuesday after November 1, which falls sometime between November 2 and November 8. The presidential election is held every four years, during years that are divisible by four. Elections for members of the US House of Representatives and US Senate are held every two years: all Representatives are up for election each election, as they serve two-year terms, while the elections of Senators are staggered, with only a third of them being up at a time for election to their six-year terms. The elections that take place halfway between a president's term are called midterm elections.

State and local elections, such as gubernatorial elections, are usually held on the same date as those for federal offices since doing so is convenient and saves money. But some states hold elections for governors and other officials on odd-numbered years, which are known as off-year elections. Election Day is a public holiday or civic holiday in some states, and some states require giving citizens the ability to take off work to vote without loss of pay. In most states, voters have the option to vote early or vote absentee by mail. These options have expanded in recent years, and some states vote primarily by mail.

As Syracuse navigates QB and RB questions, o-line gets a boost (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers didn't share a substantial update on his quarterback and running backs situations Monday. Speaking at his weekly press conference, Babers declined to delve into his staring signal-caller decision -- Rex Culpepper or JaCobian Morgan -- citing gamesmanship against Boston College. He also said that he wasn't sure if injured freshman running back Sean Tucker would be ready to return from an ankle injury.

Those questions will likely linger until the Orange (1-6, 1-5 ACC) takes on Boston College in the Carrier Dome on Saturday at 2 p.m. There was, however, one personnel change that Babers was ready to speak on: a boost to his offensive line. Redshirt junior guard Dakota Davis, a starter last season, dressed for the first time this fall in the team's 38-14 loss to Wake Forest this past weekend.

"He's finally healthy," Babers said. "... Now we get a chance to really get after him for a week in practice. You don't want to send him out there too early when he hasn't had all the conditioning and all that kind of other stuff, game conditioning. But we'll really get after him this week in practice and hopefully, he'll have an opportunity to play a little more than he did this week."

Smokescreen or Substance: Could a QB Change be Sooner than Babers is Letting on? (SI; Payne)

On Saturday, I wrote about how the passing of the torch from Rex Culpepper to a guy like JaCobian Morgan is still "down the road." On Monday, Dino Babers' press conference has me wondering if that transition could be closer than the head coach is letting on.

Just like Saturday, Morgan was a hot topic among the assembled media. There were times Babers doubled-down on his passive analysis of Morgan's 7-for-7 outing against Wake Forest.

"He did what he was supposed to do," Babers said, echoing his postgame comments. "Somebody came off the edge, him being able to slightly move, avoid the guy, throw the ball across his body, he did that. Stuff was just kind of normal stuff to me."

However, what we didn't hear much of on Saturday was what impressed Babers about the 6'4" true freshman. Babers offered that first glimpse of optimism today.

"The touchdown throw was a good throw on time," Babers said. "That would have worked no matter what was going on. Out of those seven throws where he did where he was supposed to do, I like the last one the best."

Syracuse Football’s Mid-Season Awards – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

There aren’t many positives for Syracuse Football this year, to state the obvious. The Orange’s 1-6 start is their worst since 2008. Sure, you can put a lot of the blame on the sheer amount of injuries SU has had to deal with, but good teams are able to work around gaps in the depth chart. Syracuse is not one of those good teams.

There is plenty of negativity around the Syracuse program right now, and rightfully so, but let’s try to be positive. The Orange are a little past the halfway point of the 2020 season, so here my mid-season awards.

OFFENSIVE MVP: SEAN TUCKER

This one is just obvious. With Abdul Adams and Jarveon Howard opting out before the season started, the running back position was a big question mark for Syracuse. Jawhar Jordan was supposed to be the next guy up, followed by Markenzy Pierre, but neither were anything special. Then some freshman named Sean Tucker, who no one knew, took the SU offense over in dominant fashion. Since, Tucker has been the entire Orange offense. He’s leading the team with 362 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Without him in the game, the Syracuse offense turns one dimensional. He has carried this team and is really the only bright spot on that side of the ball.

Syracuse overmatched in fourth straight loss (AP; Frank)

After a perfect October and Wake Forest's fourth straight win, coach Dave Clawson has a pretty good handle on his team. He likes what he sees.

Kenneth Walker III ran for three touchdowns, Gavin Holmes scored on a 32-yard interception and Wake Forest overpowered Syracuse 38-14 on Saturday.

“I think we're a much better team. It's a team that’s capable of playing in different ways to win," Clawson said. “It's nice to know we don't have have to score 40 points to win like we did the last two years. You can’t cheat against us. We have good balance going on.”

The Demon Deacons (4-2, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) gained 438 yards, 188 of it on the ground. The loss was the fourth straight for the Orange (1-6, 1-5).

Walker carried 16 times for 79 yards, scoring on runs of 1, 20 and 5 yards. Running mate Christian Beal-Smith picked up 87.

Dino Babers addressed the QB controversy between incumbent Rex Culpepper and freshman Jacobian Morgan. Will Morgan finally get a real chance to claim the job this week? Plus, Syracuse basketball's matchup in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. What does the Orange's matchup with Rutgers say about the program? Also, SU 2022 5-star PG commit Dior Johnson is headed back to California for high school. Could his fit at the school determine whether or not he actually suits up for the Orange?

Liberty coach Hugh Freeze advises No. 25 Flames to get AP Poll copies suitable for framing (richmond.com; O'Connor)

Liberty coach Hugh Freeze advised each of his players to get a copy of the latest Associated Press Top 25 football poll and frame it. One day, they’ll be glad they did, he believes.

The Flames (6-0) met Monday morning and Freeze, who’s in his second year, had a visual of the Top 25 poll shown to them. LU occupies the No. 25 slot, the first time the program has been ranked.

“I congratulated the team and obviously talked about the many, many people that have gone before us that have (provided) the vision, the foundation, the support,” Freeze said.

“And then kind of talked to them from a 51-year-old’s perspective of, ‘You don’t really understand maybe now at 18, 19, 20 — I didn’t either — but this is something that you’re going to remember and set on the rocking chair, or the swing, or your back porch, and you’re going to tell your kids about, you’re going to tell your grandkids about.’ ”

The six teams Liberty has played together are 4-28. The five teams remaining on the Flames’ schedule, starting with Saturday’s date at Virginia Tech, are a combined 14-5.
