Welcome to the Winter Solstice!

The winter solstice, hiemal solstice or hibernal solstice occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt away from the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere (Northern and Southern). For that hemisphere, the winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year, when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky.[3] At the pole, there is continuous darkness or twilight around the winter solstice. Its opposite is the summer solstice. Also the Tropic of Cancer or Tropic of Capricorn depending on the hemispheres winter solstice the sun goes 90 degrees below the horizon at solar midnight to the nadir.

The winter solstice occurs during the hemisphere's winter. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the December solstice (usually December 21 or 22) and in the Southern Hemisphere, this is the June solstice (usually June 20 or 21). Although the winter solstice itself lasts only a moment, the term sometimes refers to the day on which it occurs. Other names are the "extreme of winter" (Dongzhi), or the "shortest day". Since the 18th century, the term "midwinter" has sometimes been used synonymously with the winter solstice, although it carries other meanings as well. Traditionally, in many temperate regions, the winter solstice is seen as the middle of winter, but today in some countries and calendars, it is seen as the beginning of winter.

Monday Musings: Syracuse Football Recruiting Notes (SI; McAllister)

1. Syracuse Expressing Interest in 2022 QB

Class of 2022 quarterback Steve Angeli says Syracuse offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert recently reached out to him to express interest. He says coach Gilbert and defensive line coach Vince Reynolds have been speaking with him and telling him about what Syracuse wants in a quarterback. Angeli says he really likes coach Gilbert. It is still in the early stages here, but an offer down the road would not be surprising.

2. Only a Few Slots Left - Syracuse Will be Selective

Syracuse only has a few slots left to fill its 2021 roster, and they are expected to be selective as they look to fill them. They will not take someone just to add a body, but rather only players they feel are instant contributors and/or difference makers. That said, they are clearly not done looking to improve the roster for next season.

Syracuse on SI's Mike McAllister breaks down what Garrett Shrader's commitment to SU means (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

Garrett Shrader's commitment to the Syracuse University football program had social media buzzing Saturday, as Orange fans had plenty to say following the quarterback's announcement on Twitter.

The quarterback position is one with needs at the moment -- a need for competition -- and Shrader's decision to attend Syracuse is one that could pay major dividends in the near future.

Shrader, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina and former Rivals four-star prospect coming out of high school, chose to leave Mississippi State midway through the 2020 season.

With Tommy DeVito as the starter the last two seasons, Syracuse has struggled offensively.

Although some are quick to blame DeVito for the issues we've seen, it hasn't been all on him. The offensive line has been a mess, giving up the most sacks in the ACC in 2019.

But Shrader's arrival will surely challenge DeVito to be better, and if he's not, the former SEC quarterback will have a chance to earn the keys to the car and start from day one.

Syracuse on Sports Illustrated Publisher Mike McAllister has covered the Orange for several years, especially the recruiting angles of all the teams on the SU Hill.

McAllister's a fan of Shrader's game, explaining what he brings to the table for Dino Babers' offense.

"He's really athletic," McAllister articulated. "His vision as a ball carrier is better than most quarterbacks and dual-threat quarterbacks. I think there's a little bit of a stigma with dual-threat quarterbacks in that you hear that and immediately think he's a run-first, not the most accurate guy and not someone who wants to sit back and throw the ball out of the pocket. That's not necessarily the case with Garrett Shrader. He's got a quality arm and a strong arm, and he can throw the ball down the field. So, his biggest thing is going to be to learn the offense, being able to make those quick decisions because I do think the offense is a little bit different from what he was running at Mississippi State. But he's got the ability to make all the throws. If he can show the ability to pick up the playbook, make quick decisions that are the correct decisions. I think that gives him a lot of potential with this offense. I think it's a good fit. I think Syracuse has been at its best historically when they've had a quarterback that can make plays with his legs. Whether it's Eric Dungey, Donovan McNabb, Marvin Graves -- you go back through the lineage. Don McPherson, I don't want to leave him out. Shrader brings a lot of that to the table. I think this is a good thing for all parties and I think it's a good fit in terms of what his skillset brings to Syracuse."

  • Syracuse got both Shrader and Lamson from us this cycle.

Their QB room will be in good shape for years to come.

Oh man, I thought that kids style would fit well here, it’s a bummer.

Syracuse Football Top 25 Players of All-Time: No. 6 Donovan McNabb (itlh; Peelman)

Syracuse Football has had a long history of success. We look back at some of the best players to play at Syracuse University. Up next, No. 6: Donovan McNabb.

Syracuse Football fans all over the world know Donovan McNabb, one of the greatest quarterbacks of the early 21st century. Most will know him because of his superstar career in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, but before he played for them he played for Syracuse University, both as a quarterback as well as a guard on the basketball team.

During his four seasons on the Hill from 1995-1998, McNabb was a star from the get-go on the football field, both throwing the ball as well as rushing it when the opportunity arose. He was a four-year starter who immediately made an impact in his freshman year.

In that 1995 season as a redshirt freshman, he would complete 128 passes for 1,991 yards, 16 touchdowns, and six interceptions with a passer rating of 162.3, according to Sports-Reference.com. That passing efficiency rating ranked first in the Big East, third nationally, and set an NCAA freshman record. In addition, he also rushed the ball 123 times for 261 yards and two touchdowns.

On Reddit: An ACC Conference Scheduling that might entice Notre Dame to Join
In light of the ACC Championship featuring Notre Dame, and the newly selected ACC conference commissioner reported interest in revisiting the TV deal via expansion, I have devised what I believe to be the most amenable conference realignment and expansion that could entice Notre Dame to join the ACC as a full football member, while being amenable to current ACC members... Not sure if anything other than "conference champs only" will change Irish minds though.

Notre Dame's Brian Kelly rips Rose Bowl, CFP brass for lack of flexibility — 'I’m not sure we’ll play'

In a rare show of candor for a college football coach, Kelly blasted the notion that teams should play in an empty stadium without their families there, which is projected to be the case with the Rose Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal on Jan. 1.

FSU players, coaches react to Wake cancellation, potential end of the season (tallahassee.com; Weiler)

FSU was the one football program in the ACC that failed to handle COVID well. They should feel bad.

With an abrupt cancellation, Florida State's 2020 regular season came to an end.

The Seminoles' scheduled game at Wake Forest for Saturday afternoon was canceled Friday due to COVID-related issues within the FSU program.

While FSU hasn't yet confirmed it will be declining a bowl invitation, ESPN reported shortly after the FSU-Wake game was called off that the Seminoles are expected to opt out of any bowl invitations.

Many of the messages shared on social media by players and coaches would also seem to indicate FSU's season is over.

This would bring an inconclusive end to a trying 2020 season. The Seminoles lost three of their final five scheduled games this season due to COVID issues within the program. They lost one more due to a positive COVID test in the Clemson program.

All of this meant that the Seminoles played just once after Nov. 14.

NC State returns to Gator Bowl; Wake Forest set for Duke's Mayo Bowl :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; Giglio)

After a season filled with redemption, NC State will get one more shot at it in the Gator Bowl.

Wake Forest hasn’t played a home game since October but the Demon Deacons will get to play in Charlotte in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

The Wolfpack (8-3) is headed to the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville on Jan. 2 and will face Kentucky (4-6).

NC State’s last bowl trip was to the Gator Bowl in 2018, a 52-13 loss to Texas A&M. The Wolfpack fell to 4-8 in 2019 but Dave Doeren’s team bounced back this year with an 8-3 record.

"We are excited for the chance to return to the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl," Doeren said in a statement released by the school. "This is a great reward for our players at the end of what has been a very unique season."

Syracuse’s YWCA surprised by huge donation from MacKensie Scott’s $4.2 billion giveaway (PS; Lohmann)

Fanny Villareal got a mysterious phone call in October from a person who knew a surprising amount about her.

The person claimed to represent a benefactor, who would remain anonymous, evaluating whether to give Villareal’s organization a huge cash donation. The person wanted to confirm a few details about the Young Women’s Christian Association of Syracuse and Onondaga County, where Villareal is executive director.

“In the beginning I was quiet, because I was scared,” Viallareal said of the phone call. “But then they gave me kind of a confidence, and I started telling my whole story.”

Still, Villareal was a bit creeped out and thought it might have been a scam. Then she learned just before Thanksgiving that the benefactor was real: MacKenzie Scott, the billionaire ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

At around 10:30 a.m. Friday, $500,000 of a promised $1 million donation appeared in the YWCA’s bank account. The windfall comes with no strings attached. Villareal spent the morning refreshing her browser to capture when the money finally came in.

“I took a picture of it, because I never saw that much money in one day,” Villareal said. “Right there, it’s like, ‘whoa.’”

Before the donation, the organization’s annual budget was just $1.2 million. So the money will basically double the organization’s ability to empower women and fight racism, Villareal said.

The other $500,000 will arrive in the organization’s bank account in January, she said.

The YWCA is one of two organizations in Central New York that got a share of the windfall donation. The other is Goodwill of the Finger Lakes, which covers Syracuse. In all, 384 organizations were picked to get money, drawn from a pool 6,490 organizations Scott’s team considered
