Welcome to Festivus!

Festivus is a holiday that shuns the commercialism and pressures of the Christmas season, and takes place on December 23 each year. It was invented by writer Daniel O'Keefe, and originally celebrated by his family. The holiday permeated American culture after O'Keefe's son, Dan O'Keefe, wrote the holiday into an episode of Seinfeld titled "The Strike," which was first broadcasted on December 18, 1997. In the episode, the holiday was created by George Costanza's father Frank, and was celebrated at Frank and Estelle Costanza's house, with the attendance of Kramer, Jerry, Elaine, George, George's boss Kruger, and two men that Cramer invited that Elaine had been trying to avoid.

Justin Lamson Enrolling Early at Syracuse (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse's quarterback room for this spring got even deeper on Tuesday as signee Justin Lamson announced he will enroll in January.

"After talking with coaches and family and due to the uncertain circumstances of football in California I’ve decided to graduate early and enroll at Syracuse in January," Lamson announced on Twitter. "Thank you to my coaches and teammates at Oak Ridge for helping me get to this point. Let’s work @CuseFootball."

Syracuse Football: Garrett Shrader brings more QB competition – terrific! (itlh; Adler)

Garrett Shrader is transferring from Mississippi State to Syracuse football.

It’s better late than never, as Syracuse football offered a scholarship to quarterback Garrett Shrader when he was in high school, only to see him end up at Mississippi State.

But now Shrader, a highly coveted, four-star prospect out of high school, has elected to transfer from Mississippi State to the Orange, he recently revealed on Twitter.

Not only that, but assuming the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Shrader is able to suit up for the ‘Cuse in the 2021 stanza, he will absolutely contend for the starting job at quarterback, along with redshirt junior Tommy DeVito and others on the Orange’s QB depth chart.

An article from 247Sports reporter Stephen Bailey says that Shrader plans to enroll at Syracuse University in January. Under present NCAA rules, he will have to sit out a term as a traditional transfer, however, NCAA officials are working on changing their rules to allow student-athletes in all sports a one-time transfer exception with immediate eligibility.

O'Leary: Cantin-Arku finding growth in Syracuse's on-field pain - CFL.ca (cfl.ca; O'Leary)

Sometimes growth comes through struggle. In his sophomore season at Syracuse this year, Geoff Cantin-Arku learned that firsthand.

The six-foot-four, 228-pound linebacker was a part of the Orange’s disappointing 1-8 season. Through that pain came the Quebec City native’s breakout season. He had 63 tackles, four sacks, a pair of forced fumbles and a fumble recovery, just a year after playing a special teams role as a freshman.

“I think this year I came into the program as one of the oldest guys in the room,” Cantin-Arku, 22, told reporters in a recent Zoom call.

"They had a lot of expectations toward me and I think I did really good for my first year playing in the U.S. as a starter. I came from a program where we were playing 12 players on the field and the field was way wider, way bigger.

“I think I did adapt to the style of play and I think what I did (best) was I really progressed in the season. I started somewhere but every game I was getting better, I was making more plays. I had a couple forced fumbles, sacks. I had a scoop and score for a touchdown.

Four Syracuse football players named All-ACC, along with CBA product SirVocea Dennis (PS; $; Carlson)

Isaiah McDuffie of Buffalo also made 2nd team All ACC. He was verballed to Syracuse until Dino was named SU HC and decided to pull his scholarship.

Four Syracuse football players were named All-ACC on Tuesday, when the league announced the teams on Tuesday.

Senior Nykeim Johnson was named to the second team at specialist, while wide receiver Taj Harris was named third team at wide receiver, defensive back Ifeatu Melifonwu was named to the third team at cornerback and Nolan Cooney was named to the third team at punter.

Syracuse also had two players named as honorable mentions, linebacker Mikel Jones and defensive back Garrett Williams.

The awards were selected by a combination of the league’s coaches, radio broadcasters and media members who are independent of the schools.

Johnson finished with 123 points, just one short of making the first team. He was the ACC’s leading punt returner, averaging 14.1 yards per punt and was second in kickoff returns, averaging 26.9 yards per return. He was barely beaten out by Pittsburgh’s D.J. Turner, who wasn’t as productive as a returner but had better stats as a wide receiver.

Johnson and Cooney are two of SU’s remaining seniors who have yet to announce whether they will return to the team next season. Melifonwu has declared early for the NFL Draft. Harris, Williams and Jones are underclassmen who are expected to return to the team next year.

Pittsburgh’s SirVocea Dennis, who played at Christian Brothers Academy, was named a All-ACC Third Team at linebacker. Dennis finished tied for third in the ACC in tackles for loss with 1.45 per game.

In the ACC, someone always brings a sack lunch.
#Hokies finish the 2020 season currently tied for 3rd in total sacks with 36 ... Since major conference expansion they now have 605 total (2nd in the nation behind Clemson) pic.twitter.com/SP9FmUCboO

There are seven ACC teams (28%) among the top 25 in total sacks from 2004 through 2020:

RankACC Team#Sacks
1Clemson647
2Virginia Tech605
10Florida State561
13Pittsburgh555
15Miami547
20Louisville512
22NC State507

That's pretty impressive, but not surprising. The ACC has long been the conference that embraced passing and pass defense more than any other except maybe the Pac-12 (although the SEC, Big XII and Big Ten have all caught on recently, but they at one time those were all "three yards and a cloud of dust" leagues).

How did those ACC defenses compare to the field this season? Glad you asked!

What is Festivus? Syracuse alum helped popularize holiday on ‘Seinfeld’ (PS; $; Herbert)

Happy Festivus! The tradition begins with the airing of grievances... but first, what is Festivus, exactly?

Festivus is a non-religious holiday, started by Daniel O’Keefe in 1966 and popularized by “Seinfeld” in a 1997 episode written by his son, Dan O’Keefe. Celebrated every Dec. 23, it aims to protest the commercialism of Christmas, instead celebrating the season with an undecorated aluminum pole (instead of a tree or Menorah), the “feats of strength” (a wrestling match) and the “airing of grievances” (an opportunity to complain about anything and everything).

“A Festivus for the rest of us!” late Syracuse University alumnus Jerry Stiller said as George Costanza’s father Frank in the famous episode.

Frank Costanza hilariously details the holiday, complaining about how tinsel is distracting and says ordinary, everyday events are eligible to be called “Festivus miracles.”

“Many Christmases ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reached for the last one they had - but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way!” he explained.
