Welcome to National Signing Day (the Latter)

One of the most exciting moments for a student-athlete is receiving a verbal scholarship offer. Years of hard work have led to this moment. However, nothing is official until you sign the National Letter of Intent (NLI.) Not every school uses the NLI—about 650 NCAA D1 and D2 schools. It’s not mandatory to sign, but every year more than 48,000 student-athletes do. The National Letter of Intent is not affiliated directly with the NCAA; it was created by the Collegiate Commissioners Association to protect both the college and student from either party backing out.

National Signing Day Live Updates (SI; McAllister)

The traditional National Signing Day is here! Syracuse football has worked hard since the early signing period to add talent to its roster for next season, but the majority of that work has been through transfer portal options. A pair of high school prospects did give a verbal to the Orange in defensive linemen Francois Nolton and Kevin Jobity. As Nolton has already enrolled, he is not participating in signing day. Jobity, however, will.

Check back below, which will be updated throughout the day, for Jobity's signing as well as any surprises that may occur. In addition, below that is a recap of the players who signed with Syracuse during the early period and the transfer portal players who have picked the Orange.

How Syracuse football 2022 class stacks up ahead of National Signing Day (itlh; Adler)

On Wednesday, the traditional National Signing Day commences, and we’ll of course monitor any recruiting developments as it pertains to the Syracuse football 2022 class.

By and large, I’m really pumped at what has transpired for the Orange this off-season. From new coaching hires to commitments from talented high-school players to top-flight transfers into the program, I believe that the ‘Cuse boasts some nice momentum as the team prepares for spring football and beyond prior to the 2022 term kicking off.

To that end, in case you missed it, the Orange’s full 2022 schedule has gotten disclosed, and it certainly contains some daunting duels. I’m curious about the thoughts of my fellow ‘Cuse fans regarding the squad’s 2022 calendar.

Late last month, as the current semester began at Syracuse University, the athletics department announced that nine 2022 commits had signed their national letters of intent and enrolled early at SU.

Let’s see where the Syracuse football 2022 class is nationally rated.

At the time of this writing on Tuesday, the Orange’s 2022 cycle checked in at No. 73 nationally and No. 13 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, according to the 247Sports Web site. , meanwhile, also had the ‘Cuse 2022 class at No. 73 across the country.

Understandably, a contingent of Syracuse football fans may look at those national ratings and feel underwhelmed. I get that. However, I also believe there are some excellent prospects residing within the team’s 2022 cycle.

For example, in mid-January, the Orange landed a verbal commitment from four-star defensive end Francois Nolton Jr., who had been committed to Florida but reopened his recruitment.

The 6-foot-4 Nolton headlines this ‘Cuse 2022 class. He has already enrolled at SU and previously attended Miami Edison Senior High School. Nolton held a boatload of scholarship offers, including from heavyweights such as Alabama, USC, Auburn and LSU.

Like watching quarterbacks? SU will face a good one almost every week next season (PS; $; Mink)

Syracuse has its football schedule for the 2022 season, leaving seven months to dissect matchups and plot a course to reach a bowl game.

Here are a few quick takes on the schedule:

Staycation

After four-straight seasons in which the Orange opened on the road, including a couple of back-to-back road trips to kick off 2019 and 2020, SU is rarely straying far from home during the first two months of the season.

There are just two road games before November: the trip to Connecticut on Sept. 10, and the trip to Clemson on Oct. 22.

Syracuse opens against a conference opponent for the second time in three years, including the reconfigured schedule in 2020 that featured 10 conference opponents in 11 games.

Before that, SU opened the season against a conference opponent just one other time: in 2005 vs. West Virginia, a game with intense buildup as the Greg Robinson-era got underway with a new-look offense.

Like quarterbacks? Syracuse will face a bunch of good ones

How good is the lineup of quarterbacks on SU’s schedule?

Clemson might have the most unsettled quarterback position on the conference slate, and its top options will likely be a pair of five-star prospects.

Every school in the ACC Atlantic Division returns its starting quarterback, and Syracuse is 2-9 over the last four seasons against those players.

This Stretch on SU Football’s 2022 Schedule is Brutal – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Eads)

Syracuse dropped its 2022 slate last night and it’s very intriguing. The Orange open up against an ACC foe in the Loud House as Louisville comes to town. A couple weeks later, SU battles with an improving Purdue squad under Head Coach Jeff Brohm. The non-conference contest against the Boilermakers sets off a string of four consecutive homes games and five of six including a bye week.

‘Cuse proceeds to get back into the swing of conference play with clashes against Virginia which features a revenge aspect for SU’s new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Robert Anae and Jason Beck. Then there’s Wagner (sick dude) followed by the bye.

What game is your favorite?

— Syracuse Football (@CuseFootball) February 1, 2022

The first half or so of the agenda is very favorable. There’s a world in which the Orange could find themselves at 5-0. Is that likely, no probably not but all five of those teams are beatable. Now we encourage you to move your eyes to the bottom of the handy-dandy graphic we have above. Buckle up and set down your coffee cups if you’re holding one.

NC State, @ Clemson, vs Notre Dame, @ Pittsburgh. That’s an absolutely brutal stretch for Syracuse. Yes, the Wolfpack come to the 315 after an SU bye week but that’s a team that was borderline tier 1 in the ACC last year. After that, a Clemson team that is hungry to reset itself following what most consider a down year. Plus the game is down in Death Valley which makes it even more difficult.

Seven days later, Notre Dame makes the trip east. The Fighting Irish could pounce on a limping Orange team after back-to-back physical battles. The stretch ends with a road trip to Heinz Field and a date with the reigning ACC champs in Pittsburgh. Smart money says that SU goes 1-3 in that four game string, maybe even smarter money says 0-4. This doesn’t even include tough games after this stretch like Florida State and away tests versus Wake Forest and Boston College to close the season.

Syracuse Football Schedule 2022: 3 Things To Know (yahoo.com; Fiutak)

Syracuse football schedule 2022: Who does Syracuse miss on the ACC schedule and what are 3 things to know?

Syracuse Football Schedule 2022

Sept 23 Virginia

Oct 1 Wagner

Oct 22 at Clemson

2022 College Football Schedules: All 130 Teams

Syracuse Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Orange miss from the Coastal Division?

The Orange miss Duke and Georgia Tech, but they also miss Miami, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech.

That means they get Pitt, and worse than facing the defending ACC Champion is that it’s on the road after dealing with at Clemson and Notre Dame. Almost as bad is dealing with Virginia on a Friday night six days after facing Purdue.

From the Atlantic, Syracuse has to go on the road to face Clemson and Wake Forest, but NC State and Louisville are home games.

Syracuse Football Schedule What To Know: The first half is all about home, but the second half …

It’s an insane imbalance to deal with. Five of the first six games are at home with the lone road game at UConn, but the second half drops like a ton of bricks.

Four of the last six games are on the road, and none of the four are sure-thing wins – Clemson, Pitt, Wake Forest, Boston College. Making tings worse are the two home games against Notre Dame and Florida State.

Syracuse Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Syracuse has to dominate the home games and needs get off to a hot start, or else. UConn and Wagner are wins, but the non-conference dates with Purdue and Notre Dame – even at home – are an issue.

At best, Syracuse will likely be the favorite no more than four times, and that’s being generous.

This Rockford-area native and Syracuse star has NFL dreams. His backup plan? The WWE (rrstar.com; Taft)

Josh Black, the former Harlem and Syracuse defensive line star, is doing everything in his power to hear his name read out loud during the NFL Draft that starts on April 28.

He's done a pretty good job of it so far. Syracuse told him on Tuesday that they received his official invitation to this year's NFL Combine.

But if Black is not drafted, and if he fails to latch on with an NFL team during the frenzied free-agency period right after the draft, he's got a nice backup plan ready and waiting: He will try out for the WWE professional wrestling organization.

"I'm going for it with football, for sure. But if the NFL doesn't pan out, then I'll give the WWE a shot," said Black, a 6-foot-3, 290-pounder who turned 24 on Christmas Day. "Those are my two dreams, and the two things I've always wanted to do: football or the WWE."

Josh Black smiles during pregame warmups for one of the Syracuse football games this season. Black wrapped up his five-year career after starting every game on the defensive line the past three seasons.

Football first

Black has been playing football ever since he was little — and he's not ready to stop yet. He started every game on the Orange defensive line this season, finishing with 35 tackles, six tackles for loss and a half a sack. He helped the Orange defense hold opponents to 330 yards per game, its lowest number in 11 years.

Groundhog Day 2022

Welcome back to Groundhog Day... as if we ever left!
Punxsutawney Phil may be the most famous rodent in the world, after Mickey Mouse himself.
groundhog

Punxsutawney, PA is a town about an hour and a half's drive NE of Pittsburgh. It becomes the center of non-human weather forecasting for one day each year.

Groundhog Day is also the title of a movie about reliving the same day over and over again. Sort of like college football.

Miami finally has a new defensive coordinator. The Hurricanes hired Kevin Steele as their new DC... Steele was originally set to join Maryland’s staff before pivoting and joining Miami under new Miami head coach Mario Cristobal...
During Steele's tenure at Auburn as the defensive coordinator — 2016 to 2020 — the Tigers ranked as high as second in the SEC in yards allowed per play and never finished lower than sixth. Thus, Steele built a reputation as one of the league's better defensive coordinators...

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm watches (blue) from New Mexico to Vermont as a powerful winter storm builds. Pink areas are under the more severe winter storm warnings

Winter storm watch expanded to CNY for heavy snow, ice (PS; $; Coin)

A winter storm watch has been issued for Central New York as a powerful storm system threatens to cause dangerous travel conditions for more than 2,000 miles.

Winter storm watches are in effect from southern New Mexico to northern Vermont. The storm will bring a messy and potentially dangerous combination of snow and ice.

For Central New York, the weather service predicts up to 9 inches of snow and a tenth of an inch of ice for the multi-day storm. The winter storm watch will be in effect from 1 a.m. Thursday to 3 p.m. Friday.

“Travel could be very difficult,” the watch said. “The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commutes.”

The storm will start as light rain Wednesday night, which could freeze on roadways and sidewalks, especially if they’re not salted. As temperatures fall below freezing early Thursday morning, the rain should switch to snow. Snowfall is expected to pick up by sunrise Thursday and continue through late Friday morning.

“The potential is present for 9 inches or more of snow in 24 hours where the precipitation is mainly, if not all, snow,” the weather service office in Binghamton said.

The storm is still developing, and it’s still uncertain how much of the precipitation will fall as snow and how much as rain. That will be determined by when the storm system arrives and how it interacts with a mass of cold air inching down from Canada.

"Welcome to 2/2/22... (You won't see a date like that again for a long time!)"
Yeah, if you think 3 weeks is a long time (since corrected that faux pas).
2/22/22 - duh!

I guess Notre Dame is about to be destroyed by THE WORST WINTER STORM OF ALL TIME (according to our weather forecaster, at least). Thankfully, Syracuse will survive - just barely.

National Signing Day: Welcome to Cuse
