Welcome to National Doughnut Day!

National Doughnut Day, also known as National Donut Day, is an annual event that was started by the Chicago branch of the Salvation Army, first being held in 1938. It was created to honor the "Lassies," "Doughnut Girls," or "Doughnut Dollies" who had served doughnuts to servicemen in Europe during World War I. The aim of the day was also to be a fundraiser for Chicago's Salvation Army, in order to help the many people who were suffering on account of the Great Depression.

During World War I, the Salvation Army sent about 250 women volunteers who became known as "Doughnut Dollies" to France. They worked in "huts" near the front lines, where baked goods, supplies, and stamps were available, as were services for mending clothes. As it was hard to get most fresh baked goods this close to the front lines, doughnuts were chosen. At times they were even fried in helmets! The Salvation Army reintroduced the giving out of doughnuts during World War II, and members of the Red Cross gave them out as well. Today, the day is still a fundraiser for the Salvation Army in many places, and the organization teams up with various doughnut shops on the day. Some places also give out free doughnuts today.

Syracuse football extended a scholarship offer to 2024 Oklahoma City (OK) Heritage Hall quarterback Andy Bass on Wednesday. It was Bass' first power five opportunity.

"Coach Beck flew out to watch me workout last week and told me he would get on the phone with me after watching some of my game film," Bass said. "I was hype of course."

In addition to Syracuse, Bass has offers from Dartmouth, Navy, Army, UConn, North Texas, Kent State, Air Force and others. Bass is expected to take an official visit this month, but has not finalized a date yet. That should be finalized soon.

Bass, who is listed at 6-0, 200 pounds, is also a track star who lists a 4.42 40 time and 10.56 in the 100 meter. He has been in contact with the Orange for a few weeks prior to receiving the offer.

"Coach Harris actually reached out first a couple weeks ago," Bass said. They are both (Harris and Beck) extremely nice guys and I can tell they are excited."

Offensive coordinator Jason Beck has already compared Bass to a former star of his when he coached at BYU.

There’s not a confirmed time for Week 2 against Western Michigan, but Week 3 at Purdue was unveiled as NBC’s Big Ten Saturday Night game with a 7:30 start time.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #95 DL Francois Nolton Jr. (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

It’s time to start preparing for the upcoming Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get ready for a critical season for the Orange.

Up next is….

Name: Francois Nolton Jr.

Position: Defensive Line

Year: Redshirt Freshman

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 252 lbs

Hometown: Miami, FL

High School/Previous College: Miami Edison Senior High School

2022 stats: Appeared in two games (Wagner and Boston College) as a true freshman on the defensive line. He had a tackle for a loss against Wagner and a solo stop at Boston College.

2023 projections: As with the past couple of the seasons, the Syracuse Orange will count on a strong defense to force turnovers and put pressure on opposing quarterbacks in the ACC. Nolton has all the potential in the world given the schools that offered a roster spot (see below). He moves off the line fast and can get to the pocket in a flash. He has the upside to at least be a starting-caliber edge rusher.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #95 K/P Ian Hawkins (TNIAAM; Tomaiuolo)

It’s time to start preparing for the upcoming Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get ready for a critical season for the Orange.

Up next is….

Name: Ian Hawkins

Position: Punter/Kicker

Year: Redshirt Sophomore

Height: 6’0

Weight: 191 lbs

Hometown: San Diego, Calif.

High School/Previous College: Cathedral Catholic High School

2022 stats: Hawkins didn’t play in any games last season, taking a redshirt year. He began the 2021 season as a walk-on but finished as Syracuse’s starting punter, tallying 26 punts over four games.

2023 projections: Following the departure of longtime kicker Andre Szmyt, the race for the next Syracuse kicking specialist appears wide open. Along with Hawkins, sophomores James Williams and Brady Denaburg are the only other kickers on the roster. Expect the three to battle in camp for the starting job.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #97 DL Belizaire Bassette (TNIAAM; Wall)

It’s time to start preparing for the upcoming Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get ready for a critical season for the Orange.

Position: Defensive Line

Year: Redshirt Freshman

High School: American Heritage

2022 stats: Appeared in four games for the Orange. With all of the injuries on the defensive line, Bassette saw action in the final three games of the season recording two tackles.

2023 projections: Bassette would appear to be heading into the pre-season as a 3rd or 4th string interior defensive lineman. He’ll likely see more action in his second season, but he’s going to have to leap a few others to earn significant snaps.

How’d he get here?: Offers from a number of schools including Pitt, Illinois, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Cincinnati,

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #96, DL/FB Elijah Wright (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

It’s time to start preparing for the upcoming Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get ready for a critical season for the Orange.

Year: Redshirt Sophomore

Height: 6-3

Weight: 273 lbs.

Hometown: Syracuse, NY

High School: Solvay High School

2023 projections: Although he’s still officially listed as a defensive lineman on the Cuse roster, other players and Coach Babers confirmed that Wright has been practicing at fullback since spring camp. Babers went on to say that the move is the more likely path for Wright to get playing time. It’s no guarantee that he will start, but this looks to be the best shot for Elijah to see the field.

Army football to host five noon starts, one at 3:30 p.m. in fall 2023 (recordonline.com; McMillan)

Army football has been slated for five noon starts for the 2023 season and a rare late-afternoon kick off at Michie Stadium.

Army will take on Troy on October 14 with a 3:30 p.m. start. The usual noon starts are Delaware State on Sept. 9, Boston College on Oct. 7, Massachusetts on Oct. 28, Holy Cross on Nov. 11 and Coastal Carolina on Nov. 18. All the home games are slated for CBS Sports Network.

The last time Army hosted a late-afternoon game was 2020 when the re-scheduled Air Force game (due to the COVID crisis) started at 3 p.m. In 2019, Army hosted Rice for a Friday night opener. In 2017, Fordham visited for a Friday night opener and Texas El Paso played in a 3:30 start.

Army’s road game with Texas San Antonio on Sept. 15 will be a Friday night showcase on ESPN – it will be the Black Knights’ first regular-season game on the flagship cable network since playing at Cincinnati in 2020.

Army tackles service academy rival Air Force in Colorado Springs, on Nov. 4, with a 2:30 p.m. ET start. The game returns to CBSSN after the past two meetings (played in San Antonio) were aired on CBS.

The annual Army-Navy game – to be played in Foxborough, Mass., for the first time – will air on CBS broadcast network on Dec. 9 at 3 p.m.

The only two start times yet to be determined are Sept. 23 at Syracuse and Oct. 21 at Louisiana State – in both instances those start times and network assignments are determined six or 12 days in advance. The non-conference games are ideal choices for the ACC Network and SEC Network, respectively.

Seeing two Seminoles (Wilson, Coleman) or two Tar Heels (McCollum, Walker) is no surprise... but three Hokies (Jennings, Felton, and Lane) is something we haven't seen in a l-o-n-g time (and, quite frankly, what's been missing from the VT offense). The Cardinals (Thrash), Deacons (Banks) and Blue Devils (Calhoun) round out the Top 10 with one WR each. The biggest surprise of all? No Tigers!

2023 ACC championship odds, picks: Florida State flying high as favorite but Clemson remains safest bet (cbssports.com; Cobb)

For the first time since 2017, the ACC preseason favorite is not named Clemson. Instead Florida State rides last year's late momentum and a bevy of returning starters to frontrunner status, according to odds from Caesars . The shift comes as the conference scraps its old divisional structure. In its place, the league will pit the two teams with the best league record against each other in the conference title game.

This means FSU can lose its head-to-head battle with Clemson and still have a viable path to the league title game. However, Clemson is still the reigning champion and other squads with championship aspirations are lurking in the shadows. North Carolina has a Heisman Trophy candidate at quarterback in Drake Maye, and Miami is looking to make a significant leap with the help of new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. At the next tier, consistent programs like NC State, Pitt and Wake Forest look ready to break through and join the league's upper echelon.

So, what are the best plays to make in the ACC ahead of the 2023 season? Let's look at the conference title odds from Caesars :

TEAM2023 ODDS
Florida State+160
Clemson+180
Louisville+650
North Carolina+800

From Matt Brown's Extra Points: What makes for a perfect bowl sponsor?

Why the Pop-Tart Bowl rules, and who else needs to sponsor one
If VT plays in the Pop-Tart Bowl, I know what snack I'll be eating!
By the way, I found this interesting enough to retweet yesterday - it's the history of the name of that bowl that started out as the Blockbuster Bowl and is now going to be called the Pop-Tarts Bowl:

The family history of the (now) Pop-Tarts Bowl is something else pic.twitter.com/FEIFGRRFuW

__________
Speaking of bowls, CBS Sports (among others) is reporting that the Holiday Bowl seeks $3 million from UCLA, Pac-12 in lawsuit for 2021 no-show. I remember when this happened it was extremely disappointing to the Wolfpack players who had traveled all the way to San Diego only to find out that the game was cancelled.

only three players tested positive. With the cancellation coming so close to game time, the Holiday Bowl was unable to organize a replacement.

Make 'em pay!
__________
Here's an interesting - if flawed - analysis:

Percentage of CFB games on streaming/broadcast/cable through Week 3 in 2023:

ACC: 11%/22%/66%

B1G: 8%/32%/60%

Big 12: 39%/22%/39%

Pac-12: 3%/23%/74%

SEC: 25%/15%/60%
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) May 31, 2023
Of course the first three weeks are mostly non-conference games, therefore not indicative of the rest of the season. Also, he counted conference networks as "cable", which puts the Pac-12 Network on equal footing with the SEC Network - again, misleading. Still, it's interesting.
In case you're concerned about ACC football getting enough exposure - don't be. Just read this article on All Sports Discussion: ACC gets solid television exposure in first 3 weeks of season.

Dinner at the Mandana Inn, Skaneateles, N.Y.

Fresh seafood, Italian favorites highlight visit to Skaneateles’ Mandana Inn (Dining out review) (PS; Paventi)

We can count on one hand the number of restaurants in the Syracuse area offering escargots, so we felt obliged to order it on a recent trip to the Mandana Inn. Escargots are a French delicacy but an acquired taste; after all, we’re talking about snails here.

The kitchen adds the traditional blend of garlic, butter and parsley and bakes the escargots ($12) in a special dish with individual divots to allow each snail to cook separately. Each meaty forkful was dripped in buttery goodness, tender when bitten, and finished with a herbal flavor from the parsley. The snail itself is like a mussel; it’s very mild and easily takes on the flavor of the aromatics and fats it cooks in.

It was a surprise on this menu at a restaurant we knew very little about other than the location, about 6 miles south of the village of Skaneateles across the street from Skaneateles Marina. The Mandana Inn — pronounced MAN-dayna — is a seasonal restaurant, operating from May until some time in the fall before it hunkers down for winter. Its history as a tavern stretches back to the days after the Civil War. The brother and sister team of John Micucci and Emily Waziak own the Inn today.

When they bought the spot along with Emily’s late husband Alan in 2016, the restaurant received some updates still present today. The Italian Specialties section of pastas and red sauce dishes came along, as did draft beer lines, and some refurbishments of the building. A modest bar area overlooks a warm dining room that gives the vibe of eating at a family member’s home.

Hot, dry weather pushing Upstate NY toward drought: ‘We’re in really deep trouble’ (PS; Coin)

An extended stretch of hot, dry weather is rapidly leading to drought conditions and a potential increase in wildfires in Upstate New York, experts say.

“I would say for the next three weeks we’re in really deep trouble,” said Mark Wysocki, New York state climatologist and atmospheric sciences professor at Cornell University.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation has declared the entire state at “high risk” for wildfires.

The U.S. Drought Monitor has not declared a drought in Upstate New York, largely because a wetter-than-normal April in some areas helped boost groundwater supplies and streams. The weekly drought monitor report released today does classify about 25% of New York as “abnormally dry,” the stage before a drought is declared.

That abnormally dry area is largely in the Southern Tier and Catskills.

Wysocki predicts that designation will worsen over the next week.

“I think we’ll quickly go from abnormally dry to moderate drought,” he said.

Droughts are measured not just by rainfall, but by factors that include stream flows, reservoir levels, temperature and soil moisture. The DEC’s fire danger assessment relies more on moisture in the soil and plants.

Rainfall has been scant in Upstate this month. Syracuse has seen just a quarter-inch of rain in the past three weeks, and 2 inches less than normal for May. Albany and Buffalo are also about 2 inches below normal for May.

There’s little rain in for the forecast for the next three weeks, Wysocki said. The National Weather Service says there’s a 30% chance of rain Saturday; after that, the next chance for rain is late next week, Wysocki said.

The dry, sunny weather could raise the risk of wildfires and of poor air quality, he said.

A high pressure system is keeping the entire Northeast hot this week. Syracuse has already had two days this week over 85 degrees, and the weather service predicts highs in the 90s today and Friday -- the hottest days of the year so far.

Things cool off Saturday as a cold front moves in and pushes highs back into the 70s through the middle of next week. That front could bring some light rain, although the odds are only about 30%.

Wysocki said our next chance for rain is late next week.

The heat and dryness could raise the risk of wildfires, he said. Wildfires in New York are more common in spring, before leaves emerge, but can happen anytime if conditions get dry enough.
