College football recruiting: Alliance's Brendan Zurbrugg lands his first Power Five offer (freep.com; Holland Jr)

Alliance High School quarterback Brendan Zurbrugg landed his first college football scholarship offer from a Power Five school. On Wednesday, he announced on social media he picked up an offer from Syracuse.

The Orange have been on Zurbrugg's radar since his last visit on April 6 and he knew the offer was coming. He is among Northeast Ohio's most recruited players.

"Very excited," Zurbrugg told The Canton Repository. "I've been waiting on this one for a while. My visit in the spring was great. I loved meeting all of the coaches and seeing the facilities. I feel like I have a really good relationship with the coaches."

Zurbrugg is entering his senior year at Alliance. Syracuse is his 15th offer. Schools recruiting him range from the Mid-American Conference (Akron, Kent State, Miami (OH), Bowling Green, Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Ball State) to the Ivy League (Dartmouth, Yale) to FCS programs (Youngstown State, Colgate, Maine and Leigh). Liberty also offered the All-Ohio performer.

Zurbugg has been a three-year starter for the Aviators. At 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, Zurbrugg completed 76% of his passes for 2,184 yards and 23 touchdowns last year. On the ground, he rushed 804 yards and 11 TDs. He also earned All-Ohio honors in track as a hurdler.

Now that track and field season is over for Zurbrugg, he can focus on his college visits. He plans on making his official visit to Syracuse on June 16-18.

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse...-tyler-merrill-learned-a-lot-at-syracuse-camp (SI; McAllister)

Mechanicsburg (PA) Cumberland Valley offensive lineman Tyler Merrill is one of the best at his position in the 2026 recruiting cycle. That is why, despite only playing his freshman year of high school, he already holds offers from Iowa State, Nebraska, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, among others. He was on the Orange campus over the weekend participating in Syracuse's Elite Prospects Camp.

"I learned a lot, it was awesome," Merrill said. "I learned a lot of fundamental things, such as a more vertical kick step, which is still a new concept to me. And just footwork and body position."

Merrill's primary recruiter at Syracuse is Chris Achuff, defensive line coach. He recruits Pennsylvania for the Orange and has already developed a strong relationship with Merrill.

"Oh it's awesome, I really like him," Merrill said. "He stopped by at my high school and we talked for a good while. He's a great guy and I love working with him, even though he's a d-line coach."

Syracuse football gets commitment from Class of 2024 DE David McMorris (TNIAAM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange football program picked up another 2024 commit yesterday. Defensive end David McMorris from Gonzaga High in Washington, DC. committed after taking part in SU’s camp over the weekend.

McMorris is a 6’2” 255 lb. defensive end who has a 3-star rating from On3.com, where he’s listed as the 3rd-best recruit in DC and 46th best edge rusher in this class. He chose Syracuse over offers from Pitt, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Boston College and West Virginia.

McMorris is the 2nd defensive end to commit this week following Tristen Graham’s verbal commitment and he’s the highest rated of the Syracuse 2024 commits according to On’s rankings.

Here’s the HUDL highlights:
...

Analyzing Syracuse's New Players (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

Lost in the commotion of Judah Mintz’s return is that football recruiting for the Class of 2024 is about to gain serious steam. It’s no secret that Syracuse’s performance in last year’s cycle left plenty to be desired. Losing Syair Torrence a few weeks ago didn’t help anything. Needless to say, the pressure is on Dino Babers, on and off the field.

It’s only June 7, but for a program that needs recruiting momentum desperately, any new additions are good additions. Both recruits are 3 star defensive linemen from the DMV, an area that has been heavily focused on on the hardwood. Is that something that spreads to the gridiron? Only time will tell, but these two players can hopefully wake Syracuse up from its recent recruiting woes.

TRISTEN GRAHAM

Any time 247 Sports lists you as the top player in any given state, you’re doing something right, even if it’s a state like Delaware that doesn’t jump out in terms of producing big-name guys. And it’s not as though SU was the only power program making a run for Graham- Michigan State, Penn State, and West Virginia were all in the mix for the edge rusher. That in itself is a good sign.

A good edge rusher is one of the most under-appreciated members of a team in all levels of football, especially now as quarterbacks become more mobile and can easily move outside the pocket at will. Is it fair to expect Graham to come right in and live up to the billing of a Mikel Jones? Absolutely not, nor is it fair to expect him to play a starring role straight away. But when his opportunity comes, if he can play an athletic, shifty game, the Orange may finally solve what has been a problem for a few years- ultra-athletic quarterbacks. Guys like FSU’s Jordan Travis have killed them in the past. Graham has an opportunity to help change that.

DAVID MCMORRIS

The high school is the first thing that jumps out with McMorris. Gonzaga College High School in the nation’s capital plays in one of the best private school athletic conferences in the Northeast. That’s the first thing the three-star defensive lineman has going for him. West Virginia was also in the mix for McMorris, as were some ACC rivals in Pittsburgh, Boston College, Wake Forest, and Virginia Tech. Not too shabby.

Plain and simple, SU’s run defense down the stretch last year was nothing short of horrendous. Week in and week out, the opposition as good as force-feeded its RB1, and for good reason. It’s been mediocre in years past as well, but when it’s one of the primary reasons behind a five-game losing skid after a 6-0 start, it really sticks out. Enter McMorris into the equation. The run defense will in all likelihood not be completely solved over the course of just one season, especially with a new defensive coordinator in the house. His solid high school and recruiting background as well as the position he plays show he could be a difference-maker on that front early on.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #86 TE David Clement (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

It’s time to start preparing for the upcoming Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get ready for a critical season for the Orange.

Up next is….

Name: David Clement

Position: Tight End

Year: Freshman

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 265 lbs

Hometown: Albany, NY

High School/Previous College: Christian Brothers Academy (New York)

2022 stats: Missed his senior year at high school due to a knee injury suffered in the preseason. However, Clement earned nods to the First Team All-Section II and First Team All-Times Union during his junior year with the following stats: 12 games, 16 catches, 18.7 yards per catch, and two touchdowns.

2023 projections: Clement’s athleticism and size make him an intriguing tight end prospect. He was on the field with the first team offense during the spring game and with First Team All-ACC tight end selection Oronde Gadsden back at WR, there is playing time open at the TE spot. He might not get much playing time this fall, but he could be an intriguing option for 2024.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #87, WR Donovan Brown (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

It’s time to start preparing for the upcoming Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get ready for a critical season for the Orange.

Next up is...

Name: Donovan Brown

Position: Wide Receiver

Year: Redshirt Freshman

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 179 lbs.

Hometown: Montgomery Village, MD.

High School: Quince Orchard

2022 stats: Appeared in five games (four regular season plus Pinstripe Bowl), not recording any offensive statistics. He did pick up a pair of tackles on special teams.

2023 projections: Donovan saw more reps in open sessions as spring training camp progressed, even getting in with the first stringers near the end. Coach Babers said Brown is one of the guys they consider to have really high upside. He won’t be with the 1s, but his explosive speed should get occasionally him on the field when Garrett Shrader or whoever is behind center needs to air the ball out.

Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and the Michael Vick what-if: Syracuse Recruiting Rewind (theathletic.com; $; Smeltz)

Snow. It snows a lot in Syracuse. I’d call it a biblical amount of snow except most of the biblical events happened in warmer climates. It’s Norse mythological amounts of snow in Syracuse.

The snow falls in giant flakes from the gray, cloudy, sunless sky. It swirls around you as you try to walk across Syracuse’s hilly campus, navigating the ice-covered sidewalks and the rows of students in North Face, Patagonia and Canada Goose jackets. In 1993, nearly 36 inches of snow crashed down onto Syracuse over a 24-hour period. This happened in mid-March. You know, the time when spring break is happening. If this were a series about snowfall, Syracuse would be Alabama. No. 1. Undisputed. The GOAT of snow.

But unfortunately for Syracuse fans, this series is about football recruiting. And any clear-eyed, orange-clad fan would agree that Syracuse is at a huge disadvantage when it comes to recruiting players to the snowy outpost of the Dome.

2022 ACCN Revenue Confirmed! (RX; HM)

2022 ACCN Revenue Confirmed!

Plenty of interesting stuff from the GTAA (Georgia Tech Athletic Association) Financial Statement for the 2021-22 Fiscal Year. Props to JFann and AllSportsDiscussion for pointing this out!

Atlantic Coast Conference revenue distributions went from $35,014,091 in 2020-21 to $37,535,646 for 2021-22. That's an increase of $2,521,555.
As we've discussed before, that's a $2.52M increase in a year when the Orange Bowl played host to the CFP Semifinal between Georgia and Michigan. That means the ACC did not get the usual $55 million from their "Contract Bowl" - a per school impact of $3.67 million.

It was also a year in which the ACC failed to get a team into the playoffs - another $8 million loss, or about $0.5M per school.

So the total increase outside of CFP money must be $2.52M + $3.67M + $0.5M = $6.72 million each.

We could try to guess how much of that came from the ACC Network, but we don't have to because the GTAA Financial Statement tells us outright

The Association received approximately $9 million from revenues generated by the ACC Network.

2022 Record: 9-5 overall, 6-2 in ACC
Head Coach: Mack Brown, 5th year: 30-22, 35th year overall: 274-144-1
- North Carolina 2023 Football Schedule
@ColFootballNews | @PeteFiutak

North Carolina won nine games.

Yes, it totally collapsed late with four straight losses to close things out, and yes, it lost at home to both Georgia Tech and North Carolina State. It also lost the ACC Championship - it was a 39-10 rocking by Clemson - but it got there, and the loss to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl was hardly bad.

It was still a four-game losing streak to close things out after a 9-1 start, and it was the third straight bowl loss under Brown, and there was a home loss to the rival, and ...

With a horrible defense and a late power outage on offense, Mack Brown and North Carolina won nine games and was five points away from making that 12 wins.

Oh sure, a nine-win season back when Brown was rocking and rolling at Texas would’ve caused a meltdown, but for North Carolina football 2022 was the program’s second-best season since some Mack Brown guy was coaching there in 1997.

From the time Brown left for Texas until last year, North Carolina came up with a stunning 11-3 season in 2015. That was it for campaigns with more than eight wins over a 24-year span. And to go even further, over the last 41 seasons the program enjoyed just seven seasons with nine or more wins. Brown was responsible for five of them.

Heisman Trophy contenders: The ACC, plus Notre Dame, Top 5 candidates in 2023 (on3.com; Simonton)

USC’s Caleb Williams won the Heisman Trophy in 2022 and is the betting favorite to become just the second two-time winner, joining only Ohio State’s Archie Griffin.

Over the next week, we’ll look at the Top 5 candidates from each Power 5 conference (and Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman).

We kickstarted the series with the SEC, and yesterday we looked at the Big Ten’s likeliest contenders. Today, we look at the ACC, as well as faux-member Notre Dame, and its potential candidates for college football’s prestigious award.

It’s a QB-driven award these days, and the ACC has several viable contenders at the sport’s most important position.

*** Note: It’s fun (and easy) to toss out pie-in-the-sky picks, but each list this week is at least attempting to identify potential candidates who have a somewhat-realistic case to contend for the award. So you won’t see any defensive players, as the Heisman Trophy voter pool refuses to even invite a guy like Will Anderson to the ceremony (reminder: Alabama’s pass rusher had 101 tackles, 33.5 tackles for loss, 17.5 sacks in 2021).

You also won’t find me listing guys like KJ Jefferson or Jalon Daniels — two really good college QBs, but players who are on teams that aren’t expected to win a whole lot in 2o23.

Last season, Caleb Williams became the first Heisman Trophy winner since Lamar Jackson in 2016 to not lead his team to the College Football Playoff. With few exceptions, this has become a QB award going to the guy on one of the country’s best teams. Maybe that will change this fall. I doubt it.

Anonymous ACC Coach Calls Out Dabo Swinney For Failing To Practice What He Preaches About "Family" (outkick.com; Weir)

With the first week of June down, college football is still more than two months away. Players will report back to campus in the coming weeks, if they haven’t already, and summer workouts will get underway, but fall camp won’t get started until at least late July.

Thus, as many coaches take the very limited window for some time off, it’s time to talk. “Talking season” is in full swing, and there are few offseason traditions like the anonymous coaches section of Athlon Sports’ college football preview magazine.

Head coaches, assistants, and staffers from across the country are offered anonymity to preview the other programs in their conference. It can get pretty spicy.

Although there have been more fiery comments in the past, one Big Ten coach didn’t hold back on Greg Schiano and Rutgers.

Down in the ACC, one coach turned his attention toward Dabo Swinney. Specifically, the anonymous coach called Clemson’s head man for talking out of both sides of his mouth.

Does Dabo Swinney practice what he preaches?

According to the ACC coach, the Tigers focus a lot of their recruiting efforts around the idea of “family.” However, when Swinney was tasked with hiring a new offensive coordinator during the offseason, he did not hire from within.

Could the Pac-12 and ACC's futures be intertwined in realignment? l Pac-12 Podcast

Rx: Time to Expand to 20!

Rumor has it that the Pac-10 schools have agreed to the terms of a Grant-of-Rights (they just haven't signed one yet). They've also reportedly agreed to performance-based revenue distribution (sound familiar?). There's just one thing they lack: a new TV contract.

If you're Commissioner Phillips, it's time to "fish or cut bait" (pun intended)! Stop beating around the bush... no time for another committee to study the benefits... the time to act is NOW!

Here's what the ACC needs to do right now:

Add Washington, Oregon, Stanford, Arizona State, Utah, and SMU. Do it today, before they join another conference or sign a GoR or agree to a big exit fee or anything like that. Here's a map showing what the new ACC footprint would look like...

What this would give the ACC:

  • Three of the top football programs from the Pac-12 (Washington, Oregon, and Utah).
  • Two of the top private schools west of the Mississippi River (SMU, Stanford).
  • In-state ACCN rates for the two biggest states not already in footprint (TX, CA).
This would leave Colorado and Arizona free to join the Big XII (rumored anyway). I'm not sure what would happen to California, Oregon State, or Washington State. I'd feel bad for those last two - Cal, not so much.

https://athlonsports.com/college-football/miami-football-hurricanes-prediction-preview-2023 (athlonsports.com)

Mario Cristobal's debut didn't go according to plan, but Miami is poised to rebound in 2023. New play-caller Shannon Dawson and a healthy season from quarterback Tyler Van Dyke will help to jumpstart an offense that averaged only 23.6 points a game last year. The defense is also under new leadership (Lance Guidry) and certainly doesn't lack for talent. The Hurricanes aren't ready to challenge Clemson or Florida State atop the ACC. However, returning to a bowl and a winning season should be within reach.

Previewing Miami's Offense for 2023

Year 1 didn’t go according to plan for head coach Mario Cristobal in virtually any phase, but especially on offense. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke dealt with a recurring shoulder injury, star tackle Zion Nelson never got healthy after offseason knee surgery and former coordinator Josh Gattis’ offense never seemed to fit the Hurricanes’ personnel.

Year 2 will be a fresh start. Miami fired Gattis after just one year. The Canes will have Van Dyke fully healthy and have put together an offensive line with the potential to be one of the best in the country. It’ll start with Nelson getting healthy, but Miami also added a pair of starters in the transfer portal, plucking Matt Lee away from UCF and getting star guard Javion Cohen from Alabama.

As long as Van Dyke can stay healthy, he and this line should be enough to lead the Hurricanes to a much better offensive season, even though there’s still no real established talent at wide receiver. This is where Shannon Dawson comes in: The new offensive coordinator is bringing an Air Raid offense to Coral Gables, and his system is favorable both to QBs and receivers. It has been less than two years since Van Dyke threw for 2,931 yards and 26 TDs to win ACC Rookie of the Year honors in 2021, and Dawson should help him get back on track.

Miami Football OT Francis Mauigoa named ACC impact true freshman (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

Miami offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa was named by Grant Hughes of 247 Sports as one of the “ACC football: Immediate impact true freshmen for every team ahead of 2023 season.” Mauigoa is the highest-rated player in the 2023 Miami football class that ranks eighth nationally in the 247 Sports composite rankings.

The 2023 Miami class ranks first in the ACC. Mauigoa and fellow OT Samson Okunlola provided Miami with two five-star signees in the same class for the second time in three years. Miami signed defensive tackle Leonard Taylor and safety James Williams in the 2021 class. Mauigoa will contend to start in 2023.

Mauigoa will be a part of a nearly entirely new Miami offensive line in 2023. Center Matt Lee and Guard Javion Cohen were brought in as transfers and are expected to start. Left tackle and right guard are expected to be the most competitive positions on the Miami OL entering training camp.

Zion Nelson and Jalen Rivers who are both returning from injuries that caused them to miss most of the 2022 season with injuries are projected to contend to be the starting LT. Mauigoa is the leading contender to start at right tackle. If Nelson is the LT, Rivers is likely to start at right guard.

Anonymous Big Ten Coach Rips The State Of Rutgers Football Under Greg Schiano (outkick.com, Weir)

The dog days of college football are in full swing, which leads us to the heart of “talking season.” And one of the best traditions of “talking season” comes with the release of Athlon Sports’ college football magazine.

Within the pages of the fabled magazine is a section in which coaches speak anonymously about other conference programs. It never fails to provide some juicy drama.

Although there have been spicier comments in the past, the 2023 edition is no exception. Especially when it comes to Rutgers and head coach Greg Schiano.

Schiano, 57, is in his fourth year of his second stint with the Scarlet Knights after a failed tenure with the Bucaneers and three years as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State. He found a lot of success in the latter-half of his first stint at Rutgers and made a bowl game in six of his last seven years before heading to the NFL.

It hasn’t been the same in round two.

Schiano and the Scarlet Knights have won just 12 of 34 games and only reached a bowl game in 2021 after another team dropped out due to COVID-19 issues. They lost.

Most recently, Rutgers went 4-8 in 2022 and won only one game in the Big Ten. Not great.

There is no denying that it is hard to win in Piscataway, especially in the NIL era. However, 12-22 in three years with no hope for a turnaround any time soon just won’t cut it.

One anonymous Big Ten coach did not hold back on the current state of the Scarlet Knights program. He touched on the on-field results, and also went after the Rutgers culture under Schiano.

Whatever buzz Greg (Schiano) had by going back, it’s pretty much gone. He’s turned over a significant amount of staff, and word is out that it’s a highly stressful environment. They had two quarterbacks play poorly last year, and they changed the coaches but didn’t portal any new QBs. That tells you something. There’s building pressure for them to get it right and back, but that’s not possible. The guys who hired him back think they can have those Big East seasons again.

Discover rare cask ales at The Beerocracy on Seneca Lake

One of the most unusual breweries in the Finger Lakes is opening a second pub location (PS; Cazentre)

Seneca Lake Brewing Co., New York’s only brewery devoted exclusively to British-style “cask ale,” is adding a second location a few miles up the lake’s western shore.

Seneca Lake Brewing, which currently operates a brewhouse and pub in Rock Stream just north of Watkins Glen, is taking over the food and drink operation at the Showboat Motel about 12 miles to the north in Himrod.

Unlike its offerings at its original pub, called The Beerocracy, beers in the new location will be both cask, or naturally conditioned ales, plus more typical “keg” beers from other breweries that get their fizz from carbon dioxide. It will also serve wine, spirits and ciders, many produced in the Finger Lakes.

The Showboat Motel, located at 3434 N. Plum Point Road, was known as the Showboat Bar & Restaurant until it was acquired by new owners earlier this year. The new food and beverage program is part of several changes to the property.

The Showboat’s food and drink space will now be known as the Dockside Grill, said Bradley Gillett, owner of Seneca Lake Brewing. Its makes its debut with bar service only on Saturday, June 17. The restaurant side will start at a later date. Manager are that location will be Tommy and Jenna Kuhns.

The Dockside Grill will have several “British beer engines,” which are used to dispense cask ale without carbon dioxide, creating a softer, gentler and, Gillett says, a more flavorful beer. Other beers on tap will come from other nearby Seneca Lake brewers, he said.
