Welcome to Superman Day!

Superman Day was started in 2013 by DC Entertainment, two days before the release of the Superman film, Man of Steel. At this time it was known as Man of Steel Day, and it was not until subsequent years that the day simply became known as Superman Day. Both the name change and the continuation of the day seem to have happened organically. On the inaugural day, DC Entertainment partnered with comic book retailers and bookstores across the United States to celebrate the day, and gave out free copies of All Star Superman #1 Special Edition. Superman was created in 1933 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, but it wasn't until April 18, 1938 that the Superman we know of today appeared, and made his debut in Action Comics #1. It was so popular that Superman got his own comic book the following year.

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse/recruiting/jaden-hart-commits-to-syracuse-football (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football has landed a commitment from Michigan City (IN) High running back Jaden Hart, he announced on Saturday during his official visit. Hart, a 6-0, 180 pound running back chose the Orange offers from Duke, Iowa State, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, Purdue and several others. He was also receiving interest from Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan State and Iowa.

Hart had previously visited Syracuse in April for an unofficial and the Orange continued to prioritize him after that. During his initial visit, he met head coach Dino Babers and spent time with him in person for the first time.

"It was great," Hart said. "He's a very down to earth and straightforward guy. We talked about everything, really. The direction of the program, and just great conversations."

The relationship with the coaching staff, success with previous running backs and how the offensive scheme utilizes its running back proved key in Syracuse's ability to land Hart. Landing a running back with several power five offers is a big recruiting win for the Orange.

Hart is currently rated as a high three-star prospect on each of the major recruiting services. 247Sports ranks him the 60th best running back in the class. ESPN puts him 50th while On3 ranks him as the 64th best at his position.

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse/recruiting/zekai-wimberly-commits-to-syracuse-football (SI; McAllister)

Class of 2024 West Orange (NJ) High linebacker Zekai Wimberly has committed to Syracuse during his official visit, he announced on social media on Saturday. Wimberly is the Orange's second commitment of the day, as running back Jaden Hart had previously announced his pledge. Wimberly chose Syracuse over offers from Ole Miss, Temple and several others.

The 6-3, 225 pounder visited for an unofficial back in April. He spent a lot of time with the Syracuse coaches during that trip and said he was able to bond with them. Those relationships proved to be critical as he made his decision, which was sealed during this weekend's official.

Wimberly is rated a three star prospect by On3 and the 119th best linebacker in the 2024 class. He has not been evaluated by 247Sports, ESPN or Rivals to date.

On his previous visit, Wimberly took note of the practice and how the coaches instructed the players.

"I noticed that everyone was non-stop competitive," Wimberly said. "Made me want to put the pads on. The coaches made sure everything was precise and done the right way or they would do it over. Most of all they had fun doing it and I feel that having fun is the key component of playing football. Of course it’s a business and a job but you gotta love doing it."

Syracuse football recruiting: Orange pick up two 2024 commitments (TNIAAM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange are in the midst of an important recruiting period. With the 2024 class trailing most of the ACC, Dino Babers and staff are looking to build some momentum as they welcome prospects to camp.

On Saturday, the Orange picked up two more commitments for the Class of 2024: running back Jaden Hart (IN) and linebacker Zekai Wimberly (NJ).

Hart is listed at 6’ 180 in his recruiting profile and is regarded as a three-star player. He is considered as the top running back in Indiana in his class and had offers from Purdue, Iowa State, Nebraska, Duke and Minnesota. He’s the 2nd running back to commit in this class joining Trashon Dye.

Syracuse Football: Positive developments for Orange with 2024 3-star QBs (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football coaches are seeing some positive developments with several three-star quarterbacks in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Andy Bass, a quarterback/athlete from Oklahoma, officially visited the Orange this past weekend, and that trip went well, he said in an interview. The ‘Cuse has also picked up at least one prediction for Bass on .

John White from Mississippi, who verbally committed to Southern Miss in June of 2022, recently took an official visit to the Orange. He said the ‘Cuse is one of his top schools as well in a recent interview.

Brendan Zurbrugg from Ohio, meanwhile, is planning to officially visit Syracuse football over the weekend of June 16, according to a report. On3’s recruiting prediction machine currently has the Orange in the lead for Zurbrugg.

Syracuse football could potentially pick up a commitment from a 2024 QB soon.

The ‘Cuse coaching staff, in late May, offered a scholarship to the 6-foot, 200-pound Bass, a standout for Heritage Hall in Oklahoma City. His offer sheet also includes Air Force, Army, UConn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Kent State, Navy, New Mexico State, North Texas, Penn, UNLV and Yale.

Syracuse Football: Offensive tackle bails on official visit, heads to Big Ten (itlh; Adler)

In late May, 2024 offensive tackle Terez Davis from the Washington, D.C., area said on Twitter that he was going to take an official visit to Syracuse football from June 16 to 18.

But this past Friday evening, the 6-foot-7, 260-pound Davis revealed via his Twitter page that he was verbally committing to Big Ten Conference member Maryland. Naturally, this is a bummer for the Orange coaching staff, although I’m wishing Terez all the best with the Terrapins.

I’m Coming Home!! 100% Committed @TerpsFootball @CoachLocks @coachbraswell @CoachSumlin @CoachSwaba Thank you to all the Coaches that recruited me . I am grateful for all the opportunities. With that being said I will be continuing my Academic and Athletics at Maryland pic.twitter.com/xX7EYSd7Mm
— Terez Davis (@1terez3) June 9, 2023

Not too long ago, per an article from The Juice Online recruiting analyst Charles Kang, Davis had the Orange in his top five, and it was encouraging that the talented offensive lineman was planning to officially visit the Hill.

Davis is a standout rising senior at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Md. Syracuse football coaches offered him a scholarship in late March, and he also took an unofficial visit to Central New York around that time.

Syracuse football has missed out on 2024 offensive tackle Terez Davis.

According to recruiting services, Davis’ offer sheet has included the ‘Cuse, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Charlotte, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Toledo and USF.

Per media reports, while competing for DeMatha Catholic, he has suited up as an offensive lineman, a defensive lineman and a tight end.

Keeping Up With The 315 (ESPN; radio; the 315)

To conclude the week, Brian Higgins breaks down Phil Steele’s annual college football magazine, which sees Syracuse checking in at 10th in the ACC for the upcoming season. Plus, a new NIL bill passed yesterday and Brian has all the details. Finally, it’s AI Friday and today Chat GPT tells us the top 10 athletes in Syracuse University history.

Phil Steele’s Syracuse football forecast for 2023: Predicted ACC finish, strength of schedule and more [syracuse.com :: SMG-PHIL-STEELES-SYRACUSE-FOOTBALL-FORECAST-FOR-2023-PREDICTED-20230609] (dailyrepublic.com; TCA)

College football analyst Phil Steele released his annual college football preview magazine this week, 356 pages full of predictions, projections and lots of numbers.

After a 2022 season where it over-performed to start and then crashed in the back half of the season, Steele projects Syracuse football to finish 10th in the ACC in 2023. He has Clemson finishing at the top of the conference with Florida State as the runner-up.

The Orange is tied with Boston College, which it beat thanks to a second-half push to grab its seventh and final win of the 2022 season, and Virginia Tech, which SU will travel to play this fall at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26.

Behind those three are Virginia and Georgia Tech.

Last year, Steele had SU at the bottom of the ACC’s Atlantic Division. It is again behind five of the six other opponents it shared the division with.

Despite the low ranking, though, Steele writes Syracuse “will be better than expected” and that he expects the Orange to once again make a bowl game. According to Clutch Points, the over/under line for SU’s 2023 win total is set at 6.5.

Here’s more of what Steele wrote about the Orange.

On strength of schedule

Steele rates every FBS team’s strength of schedule differently than the NCAA does. He includes two factors the NCAA does not — his own Power Ratings and the number of home and away games a team plays.

SU’s 2022 schedule was predicted as the 12th most difficult in the country ahead of the season, but in Steele’s re-evaluation this year, it ended up being the 39th toughest.

Steele has Syracuse’s 2023 strength of schedule No. 63 in the country, while the NCAA has it No. 67.

The Orange has a similar difficult three-game stretch in the middle of the season (Clemson, North Carolina, Florida State) this year as it did last year (Clemson, Notre Dame, Florida State). Syracuse dropped all three of those games in 2022, two of which were in the JMA Wireless Dome.

Late Kick: If Florida State wins the ACC it will be a wake-up call for Clemson and the nation (cbssports.com; video; Pate)

In this excerpt from Late Kick Live, Josh Pate theorizes the affect that Florida State winning the ACC would mean for the top teams in the conference and the rest of sport nationwide.

Sapakoff: Ranking ACC, SEC football coaches 1-28; a Kirby Smart move (P&C; Sapakoff)

It’s a tougher room going into the 2023 season.

Harder to move up in the annual combined ranking of SEC and ACC football head coaches, unless you’re Josh Heupel, Shane Beamer or maybe Mike Novell.

Easier to slip and fall like former Clemson student Jimbo Fisher.

Tweaked debates at the top: Kirby Smart vs. Nick Saban, Smart vs. Dabo Swinney, Smart vs. the world.

There are hot seats at the bottom of the list, in Chestnut Hill and The Other Columbia.

The room gets even tougher going into 2024, when Steve Sarkisian of Texas and Brent Venables of Oklahoma join the list.

Roll call:

1. Kirby Smart, Georgia

In simple 1-28 ranking math, two straight national titles equals No. 1. Recruiting keeps rolling, too.

SEC rank: 1

2022 rank: 3

2. Nick Saban, Alabama

SEC rank: 2

2022 rank: 1

Still the GOAT. Still just one loss to Smart. If new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees gets the quarterback situation figured out, it’s national championship No. 8 for Saban, Inc.

3. Dabo Swinney, Clemson

ACC rank: 1

2022 rank: 2

Slippage is a 10-3 season followed by an ACC Championship while going 11-3 after six straight College Football Playoff appearances and two national titles. A 2-2 mark vs. Saban with both wins coming in national championship games, and the 0-1 vs. Smart was a 10-3 loss in the 2021 opener in which Georgia didn’t score on offense.

4. Brian Kelly, LSU

SEC rank: 3

2022 rank: 4

Nice start in Baton Rouge for Kelly, 10-4 including an SEC West title and a win over Alabama.

5. Josh Heupel, Tennessee

SEC rank: 4

2022 rank: 15

Beat Alabama and almost everyone else with one quarterback (Hendon Hooker), clobbered Clemson in the Orange Bowl with another (Joe Milton). Gets South Carolina in Knoxville after the 63-38 debacle in Columbia.

6. Pat Narduzzi, Pittsburgh

ACC rank: 2

2022 rank: 6

Quietly followed an ACC Championship season with a 9-4 season, including an overtime loss to Tennessee.

7. Dave Clawson, Wake Forest

ACC rank: 3

2022 rank: 7

If it’s not easy to win at Pitt, it’s harder in Winston-Salem. The body of work is incredible: Success at Fordham, Richmond, Bowling Green and 5-2 over seven straight bowl appearances at Wake.

Beamer jumps Jimbo

8. Mack Brown, North Carolina

ACC rank: 4

2022 rank: 9

Made the 2022 ACC Championship Game, though that gets harder to do now with the overdue death of the Coastal Division.

T9. Dave Doeren, N.C. State

ACC rank: 5

2022 rank: 12

So similar to Mark Stoops at Kentucky with a methodically built brand that has limitations, but belies “basketball school” labels.

T9. Mark Stoops, Kentucky

SEC rank: 5

2022 rank: 8

And if Kentucky and N.C. State are not similar enough, the Wildcats will try to improve on a 7-6 season with N.C. State transfer Devin Leary at quarterback.

11. Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss

SEC rank: 6

2022 rank: 10

Flirtation with Auburn, soaring NIL collective donations at Ole Miss and more Kiffin quips. Just another Lane Train ride aside The Grove.

12. Shane Beamer, South Carolina

SEC rank: 7

2022 rank: 16

What a vault, from No. 27 as the new guy in 2021 to No. 16 after a 7-6 season (with upsets of Florida and Auburn) and bowl win to No. 12 (after an 8-5 year including wins that knocked Tennessee and Clemson out of the playoff).

13. Hugh Freeze, Auburn

SEC rank: 8

2022 rank: NR

Some dazzling days at Ole Miss and Liberty but that baggage. And the Flames might be better off with Jamey Chadwell.

14. Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M

SEC rank: 9

2022 rank: 5

It’s come to the attention of some astute observers that Fisher hasn’t won big as a head coach without Jameis Winston at quarterback.

FSU, Florida and Miami

15. Jeff Brohm, Louisville

ACC rank: 6

2022 rank: NR

This ranking says as much about the drop-off in ACC head coach viability as Brohm’s 36-34 record at Purdue before returning to his alma mater.

16. Sam Pittman, Arkansas

SEC rank: 10

2022 rank: 14

Fragile Fayetteville is such that only a 55-53 triple-overtime Liberty Bowl victory over Kansas saved the Razorbacks (7-6) from a losing season one year after Pittman was being hailed a great hire coming off a 9-4 season. Four losses by three points or less means hope, and pressure.

17. Mike Norvell, Florida State

ACC rank: 7

2022 rank: 20

Norvell, Billy Napier and Mario Cristobal are bunched together as a Sunshine State trio with triple-tasks: Get recruiting on a consistent roll, please fans with great expectations, make “The Seminoles (or Gators or Hurricanes) are back” something more than a punch-line.

18. Billy Napier, Florida

SEC rank: 11

2022 rank: 18

Somehow beat Utah and walloped South Carolina (38-6) while going 6-7 with a 30-3 loss to Oregon State in the Las Vegas Bowl.

19. Mario Cristobal, Miami

ACC rank: 8

2022 rank: 13

A 5-7 Coral Gables debut with a home loss to Middle Tennessee.

20. Mike Elko, Duke

ACC rank: 9

2022 rank: 25

Sweet debut season as a head coach, 9-4. But a small sample size. Aside from a 34-31 upset of Wake Forest, the Blue Devils were bottom-feeders.

Hot seats at Mizzou, BC

21. Zach Arnett, Mississippi State

SEC rank: 12

2022 rank: NR

Arnett, a 36-year-old former New Mexico linebacker and Hail State defensive coordinator, did a great job holding the team together for a ReliaQuest Bowl win. Must build help around star quarterback Will Rogers.

22. Dino Babers, Syracuse

ACC rank: 10

2022 rank: 24

Such extremes. Babers went 5-21 in ACC play after stunning Clemson in 2017 and going 10-3 overall in 2018. The 7-6 record of 2022 came with a 6-0 start.

23. Brent Key, Georgia Tech

ACC rank: 11

2022 rank: NR

The 44-year-old former Georgia Tech guard and Alabama assistant went 4-4 after taking over as interim head coach on The Flats, where there’s a dark Bulldog shadow these days.

24. Clark Lea, Vanderbilt

SEC rank: 13

2022 rank: 28

Movin’ on up, from the basement. Vandy (5-7) upset Kentucky and Florida in November.

Brownlow's Twitter Mailbag: Who's feeling the heat this ACC football season? :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; video; Brownlow)

With the start of football season just over two months away, WRALSportsFan's Lauren Brownlow goes into her Twitter mailbag to discuss who has the most pressure going into the season.

A few thoughts on realignment (RX; HM)

A few thoughts on realignment

Just some thoughts I have posted on CSNBBS over the last week or so...

OFFENSE

The two best G5 teams left East of the Applachians Missisippi River Rockies are USF and SMU. I wish I could trust Tulane, I really do, but they've "deemphasized" football way too much over the years.
The biggest non-P5 BRANDS, regardless of ability to compete, are Navy, Army, and Air Force.
UConn
is the best non-football add.
Memphis is the best sports add regardless of academics.
All the other teams I'd want the ACC to add are in other P5 conferences.

DEFENSE

When it comes to realignment, the ACC has shown some decent offense, but ZERO defense.
They could've kept the SEC out of the Carolinas but wouldn't let the Gamecocks back in when they had the chance.
They could've kept the Big Ten away from the East Coast but lost Maryland and any shot at Rutgers.

This is not every game on television in week 1 by any means - its the busiest weekend of College Football. That said, we can see the general strategies of the major networks beginning to unfold here. For example, it looks like CBS wants to have a Big Ten game followed by a Big XII game on Saturdays and the first Sunday. ABC is showcasing the ACC in the early weeks, while keeping the ACC Network full every week to the extent possible. NBC is probably thrilled to have their Notre Dame game lead into Big Ten in Prime Time, too!

2022 TV Exposure: ACC vs XII (RX; HM)

2022 TV Exposure: ACC vs XII

"Anything you can do, I can do better" That might as well be the chant for fans of Big XII and ACC teams.

Lately it seems like ACC and Big XII fans will argue about anything. One I've seen lately on the internet is who has the best TV exposure? While we don't yet know what the majority of the 2023 season will look like, we can analyze the 2022 season to see how each conference fared...

2021 CFB Games per TV Network

ACCBig XII
ABC15ABC8
Fox--Fox9
ESPN/215ESPN/211
ESPNU1ESPNU2
ACCN40FS118
RSNs17LHN2
ACCX3ESPN+17
Totals:9167

Let's break this down by tiers.

T1: ABC/Fox

It should be no surprise that, while the ACC got more games on ABC, the Big XII more than made up for that last season by virtue of its contract with Fox. This is where it hurts to have just one broadcast partner (the SEC is in the same boat, by the way).

T2: ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU

The numbers here are very similar, with a slight edge to the ACC - but you would expect that with more total teams.

T3 (Linear)

Here's where the divergence occurs. Because of the ACC Network, the ACC placed 40 games on cable television while the Big XII only got 20 (combining FS1 + LHN). The ACC also got another 17 games on various channels (cable and/or broadcast) through the RSN deal, which may or may not have run out - tbd.

T3 (Streaming)

This is where the majority of the third tier Big XII games end up - on ESPN+. The ACC may send more games to ESPN+ in the future (a possible "look-in" opportunity), but last year only three of its games ended up on the internet (on ACCN Extra).

https://www.si.com/college/miami/fo...s-news-and-discussion-joshisa-trader-kj-cloyd (SI; Smith)

Wanted to have a forum where topics about Miami Hurricanes football could be plainly discussed. Just like a couple of football fans talking about the next Hurricanes matchup that upcoming weekend, what’s been happening in recruiting, like the 2024 commitments, and so on and so forth.

To that point, feel free to inbox @AllHurricanes on Twitter with questions. Same with hitting up @AlexDonno and his Twitter account. Either way, questions can be answered right here.

It would be great to start a question and answer session that can be placed within this running document, at least one time per week.

Moving forward, there also will be small updates about what has been happening with the Canes, as well as Miami athletics in general – coaching changes come to mind – that Miami fans find interesting.

Additionally, there will be some big box college football discussion about where recruits have been committing, recruiting rankings and how other schools have fared compared to Miami, ACC football, Florida high school football – and especially the playoffs – will be a prime topic, college football conference realignment, the College Football Playoff, the Transfer Portal, college football rankings, television contracts, among many topics.

June 11 - 8 pm update

With the addition of former Louisville linebacker KJ Cloyd, the Canes have helped to shore up the inside linebacker positions. He recorded 15 tackles and 2 quarterback pressures last season.

More importantly, Cloyd will help allow the young group of 2023 Miami linebacker signees to gain their football before being counting on. Now, don't get it confused. If one of the freshmen linebackers ends up starting by beating out older and more experienced players, so be it.

Cloyd and his 6-foot-2 and 230-pound frame will still bring a lot of experience and size to the Miami linebacker corps. Basically, it's also about improving the depth and competition of the position.

ACC football transfers: Florida State, Miami plug roster holes with instant-impact players for 2023 season (cbssports.com; Patterson)

The transfer portal has been generous and cruel across the Power Five landscape, providing both a way to improve rosters while also creating position needs due to player exits. The ACC has been no different, with each member finding at least one addition ready to make an impact for the 2023 season.

In terms of quality, the ACC has three teams in the top 10 of the 247Sports Transfer Team Rankings for the 2023 cycle. Florida State (No. 6) and Miami (No. 7) have plugged holes in the depth chart with portal additions, while Louisville (No. 10) has seen a more dramatic roster overhaul in the wake of the coaching change that brought Jeff Brohm back to the Cardinals.

Not every team in the ACC has gone heavy in the portal this offseason, with Clemson and Wake Forest among the schools to see far less action than programs like Louisville or Georgia Tech. Still, we've identified at least one notable transfer for each team heading into the 2023 season, starting with some of the biggest names we expect to have an instant impact.

Florida State CB Fentrell Cypress II

Mike Norvell has built Florida State back into an ACC title contender with key transfer portal additions that have bolstered the roster and powered last year's 10-win campaign. This year's top-10 transfer class is headlined by former Virginia cornerback Fentrell Cypress II, who was rated as the No. 5 overall prospect in the portal. Cypress led the ACC in pass breakups last season in just nine games of action -- his 1.6 pass breakups per game average led the nation -- on the way to All-ACC honors and plenty of portal interest when he made his transfer intentions official. He is one of four players in the top 20 of the transfer portal rankings on the Florida State roster, joining tight end Jaheim Bell from South Carolina, wide receiver Keon Coleman from Michigan State and defensive lineman Braden Fiske from Western Michigan.

Paul Finebaum ranks SEC expansion candidates from the ACC, names favorite (on3.com; Connolly)

There is a lot of speculation at the moment that schools in the ACC could be on the move in the next round of college football realignment. ACC schools are eying the Big Ten and SEC as possible landing spots, if they are able to get out of the ACC Grant of Rights.

ESPN and SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum appeared on the McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning show on Monday and was asked about conference realignment.

Specifically, he was asked who the SEC should make its top target from the ACC, if it does expand the league.

According to Finebaum, there’s a clear favorite from the ACC.

“I would go for North Carolina first, because they really hit a lot of different boxes. Number one, they’re the dominant university in one of the 10 or 11 largest states in the country. That doesn’t matter as much as it used to from a television footprint, but they do cover a lot there,” Finebaum said. “They have a respectable football program. They have an elite basketball program, which I don’t think is driving anyone other than maybe a few out West [to watch]. But they just bring a lot to the table overall. After that, I think it’s a debate between Miami, Florida State and Clemson.”

Jeff Edwards got his start cooking food for family and friends. Next was catering and a full-time chef job. Now he's opening his own restaurant. (Darian Stevenson | dstevenson@syracuse.com)

He quit his chef’s job to follow a dream. He’s opening a soul food, BBQ place in Central Square (PS; Stevenson)

Jeff Edwards started catering in 2017 after a guest at his daughter’s high school graduation party liked his food and wanted him to cater her wedding.

Mainly by word of mouth, the business grew, but the Baldwinsville man kept working as a chef at Park Terrace at Radisson, an assisted living facility in Lysander.

He decided the next step was opening a restaurant, so in March he quit his full-time job.

On July 14, Edward’s plans to open Chef Jeff’s, a 2,500-square-foot restaurant at 671 S. Main St., in Central Square. The restaurant will be a takeout-only eatery, offering soul food, seafood, American fusion and BBQ.

Edwards, who is originally from Syracuse, admits many have asked, “Why Central Square?” Why soul food in a county that’s 95% white? He’s also aware not many minorities own businesses in Oswego County: only 2.5% businesses are minority owned.

The lack of diversity doesn’t deter Edwards.

“I felt like Central Square was the area where I could dominate,” he said. “There’s no one doing food like I do in that area.”

Edwards said food has always been the center of bonding and getting to know a community of people outside of himself. He said he believes it brings people together.

Get togethers with friends, summer BBQ’s and big family dinners is what Jeff Edwards grew up on. That’s how his love for food grew.

“You can say ‘I’m having a get together,’ and the first thing people will ask is, what are you going to have to eat?” said Edwards, 46.
