Welcome to National Sandwich Day!
National Sandwich Day takes place on the birthday of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. It commemorates his birth and celebrates sandwiches. Although meat has probably been put between bread since the two foods were invented, according to legend, Montagu came up with the sandwich in 1762, while engaged in a 24-hour gambling event. He wanted to be able to eat with one hand so he could gamble with the other and asked his servants to put some beef between two pieces of bread.
John Montagu was born on November 3, 1718, in London. Besides being the Earl of Sandwich, for a time he also was First Lord of the Admiralty, Secretary of State for the Northern Department, and Postmaster General. It's likely Montagu got his meat and bread idea from his time in the Mediterranean, where he feasted on Turkish and Greek mezze platters, where meats, cheeses, and dips were placed on and between layers of bread. Montagu continued to eat meat and bread together following the gambling event, and it quickly caught on in popularity in London, particularly with people of society who ate in restaurants. The food began being referred to by part of Montagu's title: Sandwich.

Syracuse and Boston College played a chippy game in 2022: ‘That’s all in the past’ (7 things to know) (PS; Leiker)
Caleb Okechukwu kept it breezy when asked about the chippiness of last year’s Syracuse football game at Boston College.
“I remember we were about to fight at the end of the game, right?” Okechukwu said with a smile. “I think everybody remembers that. I think there’s a lot more energy. They’re probably talking about it. It’s a part of the game. It’s all football. I love stuff like that. It’s more energy. More excitement.”
Last year’s Syracuse-Boston College game cosplayed as an MMA fight on more than one occasion.
Tensions rose early in the rivalry game and the hammer — or rather, flag — came down after the final whistle as players from both teams swung at each other while the Orange tried to plant its flag in the turf at Alumni Stadium.
Maybe the most notable incident from the game came late in the second quarter, when Syracuse offensive lineman Enrique Cruz was ejected from the game after punching BC defensive lineman Donovan Ezeiruaku multiple times in the back of his helmet.
Though what prompted the reaction wasn’t revealed by the program at the time, speculation was that Ezeiruaku had spit on Cruz.
SU coach Dino Babers seemed to confirm that speculation on his radio show on Oct. 5 when he said “nobody spitted into somebody’s helmet, which has happened last year on one of our guys,” while talking about a penalty in the game against Clemson.
Cruz did not want to discuss the incident when asked Tuesday.
“I don’t think about that no more,” Cruz said. “That’s something that I keep in the past... No, no. That’s all in the past, man. That’s 2022. We’re in 2023.”

Syracuse to host Boston College, seeking to snap 4-game losing streak (spectrumlocalnews.com; AP)
WHAT’S AT STAKE?
This is the quintessential matchup of teams going in opposite directions. Boston College, winners of four straight, are a win away from being eligible for their first bowl berth since 2019. The Orange are trying to salvage their season following four straight lopsided losses. Syracuse needs two wins in its final four games to become bowl eligible for a second straight season. But that seems a tall order considering the way the team has been performing.
KEY MATCHUP
Plain and simple: Syracuse’s offensive line against the BC defense. If the Orange line can’t protect quarterback Garrett Shrader and open up running lanes for LeQuint Allen, it’s game over. Shrader was sacked a season-high eight times against Virginia Tech, and the offense managed minus-3 yards rushing and finished with 138 total yards. The offensive line must kick things up a notch, or else it will be a long night.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Shrader has looked uncomfortable in all of Syracuse’s losses. Whether it’s the result of poor offensive line play, a hit suffered against Clemson, or a recent bout with food poisoning, the senior quarterback needs to make things happen as he did against Purdue earlier this year. His performance against Virginia Tech marked the third straight game with fewer than 150 yards passing.
BC’s Thomas Castellanos is one of just four quarterbacks in the country with 1,000 passing yards and 500 rushing yards. He's also one of four FBS quarterbacks with multiple 100-yard rushing games and the only Power Five signal caller with multiple 100-yard rushing games. Castellanos leads the country in yards rushing by a quarterback at 673 and he’s tied with USC’s Caleb Williams for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with nine.

Syracuse football heads back home to face rival Boston College Friday (waer.org; Ridley)
Syracuse football (4-4, 0-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) returns to the Dome on Friday to take on Boston College (5-3, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Orange haven’t played a game on the Hill in over a month. Coincidentally, SU’s loss to Clemson on September 30th spurred a four-game losing streak that the ‘Cuse have yet to break.
Syracuse’s and Boston college are on two completely different trajectories. The Orange started the season with four straight wins before conference play handed SU four-straight losses. On the other hand, the Eagles opened up the season with an overtime loss to Northern Illinois and barely eked out a win against FCS Holy Cross. However, BC has righted the ship, securing two conference wins in the process.

The difference between both sides lies in the offense, specifically the passing game. Boston College is led by sophomore quarterback Thomas Castellanos. The Eagle’s signal caller is a dual threat, leading the team in both passing and rushing yards. Boston College radio analyst Scott Mutryn spoke highly of Castellanos on WAER’s Ostrom Avenue Podcast.
“I like to call him an eraser,” Mutryn said. “Because he’s able to erase a lot of mistakes, he’s able to erase people if they run the wrong route, if they miss a block, if the defense has great coverage or sends pressure. He’s able to erase it with his ability to never let a play die.”

Boston College is one of the hottest teams in the ACC right now, winners of four-straight and looking like they could climb to seven wins or even more. But the issue for BC is that this win streak has come against some mediocre competition: Virginia, Army, Georgia Tech, and UConn. The Eagles have yet to prove yet that they can defeat a good squad. Meanwhile, Syracuse has proven multiple times that they can’t beat a good squad. The Orange have lost four-straight to decent or good teams: Clemson, North Carolina, Florida State, and Virginia Tech. Cuse hasn’t played good football in weeks, but they’re hoping they can get back to where they started against some easier competition in BC.

What to Watch For
- Can Shrader get going? Syracuse QB Garrett Shrader is one of the ACC’s most experienced QBs and has plenty of history with beating Boston College. But he has had quite a rough stretch these past four weeks and hasn’t gotten past even 200 total yards from scrimmage (passing + rushing) in these losses. BC’s defense needs to keep him cold, because he is a dangerous player when he’s hot.
- Is Castellanos at full go? It’s clear that BC QB Thomas Castellanos was playing at less than 100% in the second half of the win against UConn, but it’s unclear how serious his affliction actually was. BC head coach Jeff Hafley simply said he wasn’t “feeling well” and left it at that, while TC came out of halftime with a wrap around his leg and couldn’t move very well on the field. With a quick turnaround into traveling for a Friday away game, his status could be a question mark.
- Which defense is worse? Both of these defenses are having their struggles this season. BC has been able to leverage their new star QB into some comebacks at least, but both have found themselves in some sticky situations this year because of their defenses. The Eagles’ D has a little momentum after a better performances against UConn and Georgia Tech, while Cuse hasn’t put up a good defensive performance in weeks, but both units have been so inconsistent that any kind of performance could happen on Friday night.
Boston College at Syracuse football: Predictions, odds, how to watch ACC rivalry game (usatoday; Ostly)
Week 10 of ACC football features one of the oldest rivalries in the conference: Boston College (5-3, 2-2 ACC) and Syracuse (4-4, 0-4). The two teams first met in 1924 when Syracuse won 10-0 and have played 55 times in the following years.
Syracuse, fresh off a 38-10 loss to Virginia Tech, comes into Friday night's game winless in the ACC so far this season. Prior to ACC play, the Orange enjoyed a 4-0 start to the season. A dominant 65-0 win over Colgate to open the season gave way to a similarly dominant win over Western Michigan 48-7. The Orange went on the road against Purdue in Week 3 and earned a 35-20 win. One week later, a 29-16 win over Army gave Syracuse plenty of momentum heading into ACC play.
A 31-14 loss to Clemson at home to open conference play proved to be the closest ACC game of the season so far for the Orange. A 40-7 loss to North Carolina, the 41-3 loss to Florida State, and last week's loss to Virginia Tech has the Orange at 0.500.
“It’s starting to be a theme,” Syracuse coach Dino Babers said after the Virginia Tech loss. “We have to find a way to stop that. We’ve got to get in these games and not get out of them... whatever we can to make sure that we have the opportunity to find a way to start faster.”
Arguably the toughest games of the Orange's season are behind them but Boston College will be not be easy.
While Syracuse has fallen off after a 4-0 start, Boston College is enjoying a winning streak after a tough start. A 27-24 overtime loss to Northern Illinois made for a rough beginning to 2023. The Eagles bounced back with a 31-28 win over rival Holy Cross in Week 2.
Boston College followed the rivalry win by nearly knocking off Florida State. Eagles quarterback Thomas Castellanos outplayed Seminoles signal caller and Heisman candidate Jordan Travis with 400 total yards and two scores but Florida State held on to win 31-29.
A week later Boston College lost 56-28 to Louisville. Since then, it's been all wins in Chestnut Hill.
Two 27-24 wins over Virginia and Army got the Eagles back on track. The Army win gave Castellanos a chance to show off his legs with 142 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground. He continued that in Boston College's 38-23 win against Georgia Tech with 128 yards rushing, 255 yards passing, and two rushing touchdowns.
Last week, running back Kye Robichaux was the star with 112 yards and two touchdowns on the ground as the Eagles beat UConn 21-14. Boston College legends Doug Flutie and Tom Coughlin were on hand to watch the Eagles move one win closer to bowl eligibility. The latter spoke to the team on Friday before the game.
“That was special," Boston College coach Jeff Hafley said. "It was special for me, it was special for the team... He's a legend around here.”

The Boston College Eagles face the Syracuse Orange on a short week this Friday. This matchup features two teams heading in opposite directions, with Syracuse dropping four straight while BC is riding a four-game winning streak. Jeff Hafley hasn't beaten Dino Babers since his first year with the Eagles in 2020. But the Orange haven't been competitive for an entire game since late September. BC can secure bowl eligibility with this win, while Syracuse needs this win to keep bowl hopes alive.
Three Keys to Victory
Run Vertically, Pass HorizontallySyracuse has been running a 3-3-5 defense since 2020, but now they have one of the creators of the system, Rocky Long, as the coordinator. Long has adjusted his 3-3-5 to present as more of a 5-1-5, moving his linebackers down to the line of scrimmage to play as edge rushers. This gives the Orange the ability to deploy many more exotic blitz looks and makes them effective at stopping Zone-centric rushing attacks. However, based on the results of the previous four games, it looks like this scheme should have stayed in the Mountain West, where it can stymie Group of Five offenses.
Enter the Boston College Eagles, the best rushing attack in the ACC and one of the best in the country. The Eagles’ dominant offensive line has been bowling over teams, relying on downhill runs in Gap-style schemes. That is exactly where Syracuse’s defense has struggled the most. Their undersized front seven is meant to flow from sideline to sideline and take away outside rushes. But BC can force them into a phone booth with runs up the middle that negate the Orange’s speed and athleticism advantage and favor the Eagles’ size and strength.

Here's what Kevin Stone and Justin Rowland think about the matchup and how things might play out.
What are the main reasons for BC fans to be optimistic about this game?
Justin Rowland: Syracuse had some good press coming into the season but you can't look at their results in recent weeks and feel like the Eagles don't have a good chance to pull a big win. Since beating Army, the Orange have lost to Clemson (31-14) at home, UNC (40-7), Florida State (41-3), and Virginia Tech (38-10). Over the last month of the season you could make the case that Syracuse has been as bad as any Power Five team in the country. At the same time, BC is riding a four-game win streak. Given that, it seems like this game is coming at the perfect time. Over the last month Syracuse has allowed 9 touchdown passes with zero picks. They gave up 318 rushing yards to VT. The Syracuse run defense was stout to start the year but has cratered.
Kevin Stone: Momentum and confidence. The Eagles are feeling it after four straight wins, even if the UConn game wasn't as visually pleasing as most fans would have liked, they still dominated. The Dome will provide a tough atmosphere for Castellanos and the line, which will be interesting. Are the penalties really cleaned up pre-snap? Or has BC just not dealt with much noise and hostility in the last few weeks. The way this offense is playing (running), it's hard to imagine Syracuse has the talent to slow them down.
What are the main reasons for BC fans to be concerned?
Rowland: You see that Boston College doesn't have much of a margin for error. Even with its four-game win streak the Eagles skated by UCONN 21-14. They notched very narrow wins against Virginia and Army. The hope has to be that they gradually build and put together more complete games in every facet but they're cutting it close week to week. Syracuse receivers Damien Alford, Umari Hatcher, and Donovan Brown have been capable playmakers this year. With Syracuse coming back home you know the staff will be preaching and pushing for a hard reset for a chance to salvage the season before the stretch run.
Stone: Syracuse QB Garrett Shrader. This defense has still shown an inability to handle running QB's at times and while Shrader is no Thomas Castellanos in that department, he's still dangerous. He's also a different QB at home. Shrader has a 67% completion percentage in the Dome to 57% on the road. He's thrown eight TD's and just three picks (3/2 on the road) and 964 yards to 536 on the road. If there was ever a game where the BC D-line needed to have a night, it's this one. Shrader isn't the type of rusher BC has to sit back for, they can still try to get after him, it'll just be a case of needing to contain him if he does escape the pocket. The secondary has been better too and turnovers do come in bunches, but the Eagles need to take the ball away or the Orange might hang around in this one.

Rowland: BC 27, Syracuse 20. Kye Robichaux rushed 23 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns against UCONN. Given the way Syracuse has failed to slow the run in recent weeks, I'll call for him to have another strong game.
Stone: BC 24, Syracuse 17. I have a feeling this is going to be a close game through the fourth quarter before a late Castellanos rushing TD seals the deal. The Eagles need to continue dominating on the ground an controlling time of possession. MVP will be Ezeiruaku for a 3-sack performance, including a game-clinching strip sack in the final minutes.

This season is turning into one to forget for Syracuse football. But the ACC just announced its conference slate for each season until 2030, so Orange fans can now turn their attention to the future for a bit.
Permanent Rivalry Games
The biggest takeaway is for the Syracuse football schedule is that SU has two permanent opponents: Boston College and Pittsburgh. This makes plenty of sense. There’s a regional connection within the northeast, plus the historical rivalry three programs shared within the Big East. In Dino Babers’ press conference this week, he specifically pointed out how important the BC game is to the program every year.
The consistency of those two matchups is also beneficial in terms of schedule difficulty. The Panthers and Eagles haven’t been powerhouses in a long time. While they’ve each had solid years here and there, SU should have two winnable games each season with Boston College and Putt on the schedule.
Avoiding Powerhouses
The top programs in the ACC are usually some combination of Clemson, Florida State, and Miami. Syracuse avoided having to face these opponents about as much as possible. SU has just three matchups apiece with this trio over the next seven seasons. While it’s nice to beat the best, beating those teams is a tall task. Playing against the Tigers, Seminoles, and Hurricane has little as possible makes getting to bowls more realistic.

Syracuse Orange: NIL in ‘better position than I think people perceive’ – AD (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse Orange athletic director John Wildhack said in a recent radio interview that name, image and likeness (“NIL”) efforts on the Hill are “in a better position than I think people perceive.”
NIL continues to prove a hot-button topic in Central New York, given the explosion of the NCAA’s transfer portal, recent comments from Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers, the football program’s struggles of late, and other factors.
Some fans remain frustrated about NIL as it relates to the Syracuse Orange, and I get it. I’ve seen them chime in on social media in recent weeks and in recent months, saying they’re skeptical that the ‘Cuse can successfully compete with other big-time schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference and around the country when it comes to NIL.
Fans also believe that SU Athletics is late to the game, so to speak, concerning NIL efforts. And even though a new commercial NIL collective focused on all Syracuse Orange sports just got off the ground in mid-September, some ‘Cuse fans are still upset about what transpired in the spring, when businessman and philanthropist Adam Weitsman decided to no longer do NIL deals with Syracuse Orange student-athletes.

Syracuse Orange football is falling off a cliff. After dropping three straight to the ACC’s better teams, SU laid an egg against 3-4 Virginia Tech, dropping the Orange to 4-4. The numbers in this week’s third down and red zone report showcase a record low. Not only did Syracuse not convert a third down the entire game, its defense gave up conversions at a 50% clip for the second straight week. If necessary, shield your eyes as we dive deeper. Here we go.

Yep. That’s right. ZERO third-down attempts from within three yards. That’s a first for any down and distance threshold this season. And it wasn’t because the offense moved the sticks on first or second down...Third down and 4-6 yards: 0-for-2
Since conference play began, the Orange have gone 5-for-15 from the area after starting 10-for-19. With open options downfield, Garrett Shrader opted for a 3-yard dump-off to LeQuint Allen on a third-and-6 late in the first quarter. Walk-off field goal lifts short-handed Duke to win over Wake Forest, keeps Blue Devils alive in ACC race (cbssports.com; Straka)
Duke kicker Todd Pelino drilled a 26-yard field goal as time expired to seal a 24-21 victory over Wake Forest Thursday night. The win gets the Blue Devils to bowl eligibility and keeps lingering ACC Championship Game hopes afloat. The Blue Devils pulled out the win despite getting out-gained 400-267. Duke true freshman quarterback Grayson Loftis entered Thursday with just five career passing attempts. He finished 7 of 19 passing for 86 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Wake Forest had a seven-point lead on three separate occasions, but Duke -- down multiple starters -- managed to hang around and keep the game within a score. The Blue Devils didn't lead until Pelino's final field goal.
Duke has now won back-to-back games in the long-running series with Wake Forest, marking the first time the Blue Devils have strung together victories against the Demon Deacons since winning four in a row from 2012-15. Also with the victory...

With Riley Leonard sidelined with a toe injury, QB Grayson Loftis made his first collegiate start for the Blue Devils, tossing a touchdown in his debut. Florida State vs. Pittsburgh: How to watch, stream, TV info (tomahawknation.com; NT&T)
The undefeated Florida State Seminoles football team, ranked 4th in the nation and the inaugural College Football Playoff rankings, travel up north to face the Pittsburgh Panthers this weekend.
Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. eastern on ESPN. Mark Jones and Louis Riddick will have the call, with Quint Kessenich on the sidelines.
Pitts leads the all-time series with Florida State 6-4. The most recent matchup between the two teams in 2020 saw Pitt emerge from Tallahassee with a 41-17 win. Kenny Pickett threw for over 200 yards but no touchdowns, as the Panthers scored four times on the ground and once on a 50-yard interception return. Three FSU quarterbacks saw action, with Jordan Travis, Chubba Purdy, and James Blackman each throwing an interception. Jordan Travis ran for 80 yards and a touchdown, but the hapless Seminoles were embarrassed at home nonetheless.
This Florida State team, however, is far different than its 2020 predecessors.
According to DraftKings, the Seminoles are a 21.5-point favorite against the Panthers, with the over/under set at 50.

The ACC in SP+, Week 9: The roaring 20’s of the ACC (backingthepack.com; PW)
After another week of play, Florida State continues to distance itself from the rest of the ACC as the Seminoles find themselves in the thick of a national title hunt. The conference is apparently trying to dominant the 20’s, and if Duke hadn’t been so completely awful against Louisville, they may well have 21-25 wrapped up.

The real interesting thing, as you’ll no doubt see, is just how far Syracuse and Pittsburgh fell. It’s clear from an SP+ perspective that both teams are much more in line with their poor Week 9 performances than what the system had previously considered them to be. Seventeen and 20 spot falls are no joke. Wake Forest is probably thankful because it makes their seven spot drop look like nothing.
NC State’s win over Clemson netted them just a two spot upward movement thanks to an improvement in the rating of just 0.2 points. Clemson, meanwhile, saw their rating drop by 1.7 points but their ranking drop by just two.

Happy National Sandwich Day! Here are 50 of the best you should celebrate in CNY (PS; $; Miller)
A very hungry lad decided long ago that we should all take pause on Nov. 3 to celebrate the birthday of John Montague. Afterall, Montague was the fourth Earl of Sandwich who in the 1700s invented the timeless art of stacking meats and other things between two slices of bread.
So let’s have at it. Happy National Sandwich Day, everyone!
Think about it. Not only are sandwiches an ideal choice for breakfast, lunch, dinner and the occasional 2 a.m. fridge raid, but they also hold the power to bring people together like a global gastronaut United Nations. From the childhood classic PB&J to the exotic banh mi, sandwiches are the only meal that allows us to exercise our jaw muscles while pondering some of life’s least pressing questions, like whether the crust is just a sandwich’s way of wearing a turtleneck.
Central New York is blessed with myriad establishments that pay homage every day to the almighty sandwich. Over the past six years of documenting the our food scene for syracuse.com and The Post-Standard, I’ve eaten and photographed more than 200 sandwiches.
Here are 50 of my local favorites. While I truly appreciate a sloppy McRib from McDonald’s or a Double Whopper with cheese, I’m not including chain restaurants, nor am I mentioning anything I wolf down at the New York State Fair. These are sandwiches made in the Syracuse area that you can get right now, on National Sandwich Day.
These are listed in random order, so don’t read too much into it.
1. Fair Deli Market: The Zach Breakfast Bagel
Where: Fair Deli Market, 757 State Fair Blvd., LakelandBetween the bread: This is the sandwich Zach Marji made for himself when he opened his parents’ store on Saturday mornings. An everything bagel bookends two over-medium eggs, spicy sausage, thinly sliced ham that spends about 30 seconds on the grill, a hash brown patty, American cheese, chipotle sauce, lettuce and tomato. You should consider eating this stacked bagel at the deli, or just wait until you get to your desk. This 1-pound sandwich is 3¼ inches tall, mind you, which normally wouldn’t challenge my oversized cakehole.
2. Lombardi’s Imports: The Jake
Where: Lombardi’s Imports, 534 Butternut St, SyracuseBetween the bread: I’ve been to this store dozens of times, and I almost always leave with a Jake, the store’s signature sandwich. Watching Dino Lombardi prepare this sandwich is like watching an artist create a masterpiece on a naked sub roll. He starts by cutting the bread in half, lengthways. He slowly works the Finocchiona salami across the meat slicer set to the smallest depth. He then turns to the bresaola (air-dried beef) and prosciutto. He will occasionally stop to hand you a paper-thin slice just to whet your palate. He adds fresh mozzarella cheese, white truffle moliterno cheese, a balsamic glaze and olive oil. Some of the ingredients he puts on this thing sell for $30 per pound. Somehow the sandwich is less than half that. Do the math.

Haul out the holly, it’s almost Christmas time in New York.
Rockefeller Center’s annual Christmas tree lighting is set to take place this month and the star of the show hails from Upstate New York.
An 80-foot-tall, 12-ton Norway Spruce from the Binghamton area has been chosen as this year’s guest of honor. Donated by the McGinley family of Vestal, N.Y., the behemoth will be cut down on Thursday, Nov. 9. The tree will be escorted all the way to Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, arriving on Saturday, Nov. 11, more than two weeks ahead of its illumination day.
According to The Center Magazine, the annual selection of the tree falls to Erik Pauze, the head gardener for Rockefeller Center.
Pauze actually found this year’s tree by happenstance, while he was on his way to see another evergreen a short ways away. He couldn’t get the McGinley’s tree out of his head, so this past spring, he ventured back and inquired about the prodigious pine.
The McGinley family told him that not long before he knocked, someone told them, “That looks like a Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.”

Salt City Market’s newest vendor brings charcuterie to its mix of dining options (PS; Cazentre)
A catering company that specializes in artisanal sandwiches and charcuterie boards will become the newest vendor to open a stall at downtown Syracuse’s Salt City Market.
She Fancy Grazing Co. will take the location in the market that has been occupied by Farm Girl Juicery. She Fancy will open in that spot on Dec. 15.
She Fancy, based in New Hartford near Utica, is owned by Anna and Sharrone Sofer. They have also owned restaurants in Utica and Clinton.
Their menu features a wide array of charcuterie boards, often called “cuties” for short, with an emphasis on attractive presentations. Options listed on their web site this week show a few Halloween-themed specials, along with Thanksgiving and Harvest offerings. They are available in large, medium and small.
