Basketball is one of the most popular team sports in the world and we celebrate it today, on the anniversary of the birth of James Naismith, its creator. Naismith was born in 1861 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. After leaving a position as the athletics director at McGill University in Montreal, Naismith came to the United States—a country where he would eventually gain citizenship—to the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, to teach physical education. His superior asked him to come up with an indoor sport that could be played during winter, which would be fair and not too rough. In December 1891, Naismith came up with "basket ball."

SU football PFF grades vs. BC: Shrader’s value couldn't be more clear (PS; Mink)
It wouldn’t be election season without an October surprise.
Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader didn’t dress for Friday night’s 17-10 loss to Boston College, and his coach said after the game he wasn’t sure if his starting quarterback would suit up the remainder of the season.
That’s an ominous outlook for a program that struggles to win away from home or without its starting quarterback. SU is facing the prospect of having to do both if it wants to play a 13th game this season.
Friday night’s turnover-filled outing showed the value in having an experienced quarterback at a time Syracuse needs every break it can get to eke out a victory. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson was the lowest-graded player in the game, according to Pro Football Focus.
Some subtext: Del Rio-Wilson was in line to be the team’s No. 3 quarterback this season, prior to Justin Lamson transferring to Stanford after spring practice.
More subtext to the team’s fifth-straight loss: a succession of four three-and-outs (including two turnovers) on the four possessions in which SU started with field position betweens the 40s.
The margins are impossibly thin for this 4-5 football team. That it came up without so much as a first down, let alone a field-goal attempt, on all four possessions is a black eye for an offensive coaching staff that has shown to be just as hamstrung as the offensive staffs in 2019-2022 when attrition sets in this time of year.
“You know who we’ve got out there. You’ve seen our issues with who’s on the field and who’s not on the field,” coach Dino Babers said. “But we’re not going to use those as excuses. We’re going to line up and we’re going to play every week. We’re going to do everything we can not only to make our family but to make the community and university proud as well.”
Syracuse enters next week’s game against Pittsburgh in the Bronx with a 6-26 record in ACC road games under Babers. The bookkeepers can label this a neutral-site game, but you get the picture.

There’s a measure of truth in what Dino Babers said after Friday night’s 17-10 loss to Boston College.
The problems plaguing this Syracuse season are familiar to those who have closely followed the program, Babers intimated. They don’t need to be rehashed yet again in this space.
Instead, it’s worth revisiting what’s different about this season from the late-season slumps that hit the team earlier in Babers’ tenure: Staff continuity.
Babers lost about half his staff after a seven-win season resulted in no long-term stability for the assistants.
The result after the staff turnover?
The program’s most well-run positional unit throughout Babers’ tenure is suddenly unsettled a year after Nick Monroe and Chip West left the staff.
As some sort of punitive measure, one starter wasn’t allowed to take a defensive snap in Friday night’s loss, according to the coach. Another is playing upwards of 100 snaps some weeks with a protective club on his left hand.
Syracuse is also playing its Nos. 4 and 5 cornerbacks from the preseason depth chart after the head coach said the opening-day starter switched positions to safety in the middle of the season.
Offensively, the line is below-average. Syracuse has been playing without two starting offensive linemen nearly all season, and its No. 3 guard is in and out of the lineup.
Among ACC linemen who have played at least 100 snaps this season, all seven of SU’s players grade out in the bottom half of the conference, according to Pro Football Focus. Syracuse is the only ACC school without a lineman who grades out in the Top 50.

LeQuint Allen continues to be the main force for the Syracuse office. In the Orange's game against Boston College, he had 142 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Turnovers haunt Syracuse in 17-10 setback to Boston College (waer.org; Della Piana)
In its first home game in over a month, Syracuse football (4-5, 0-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) turned the ball over four times and was defeated 17-10 by Boston College (6-3, 3-2 ACC). Despite a 4-0 start, SU remains winless in conference. The Orange’s last win was on September 23 against Army.
The Orange were without starting quarterback Garrett Shrader, who was out due to an injury suffered against Virginia Tech last Thursday. Redshirt sophomore Carlos Del Rio-Wilson made his second career start for SU, and his lack of experience was very evident. The redshirt sophomore completed just 7 of 17 passes for 37 yards with four interceptions.
It was a game of lost opportunities for the Orange as the ‘Cuse had four drives that began inside BC's 45-yard line or better, but resulted in two punts, two turnovers, and no points.
“Obviously extremely disappointed with the outcome,” head coach Dino Babers said. “It was a game we felt we had an opportunity to win. We were in it all the way. We just needed to make enough plays and there were plays to be made.”
Speaking of plays, the Eagles ran twice as many (94) as the Orange did (47) and BC had the ball for more than 42 minutes of the game.

Should Carlos Del Rio-Wilson Start Against Pitt? (orangefizz.net; Gotkin)
When Carlos Del Rio-Wilson announced his decision to transfer to Syracuse before the 2022 season, the Syracuse fanbase was elated. A former four-star who just spent a year learning under Dan Mullen, who has produced some very good quarterbacks in his career.
But, the early appearances for CDRW in Orange have been disastrous. Against Notre Dame last year, after Garrett Shrader got hurt, the Georgia native went just 11/22. But, he wasn’t practicing with the first teamers all week and got thrown into one of the biggest games for SU in a long time. So you can understand the bad performance.
The week after that, he got his first start against Pitt. Things couldn’t have gone more wrong for Del Rio-Wilson against the Panthers. The redshirt freshmen went 8/23 and threw for just 120 yards and no touchdowns. In addition, he had just one scramble for seven yards. It was a bad showing from the newcomer but, it was his first ever college start so maybe you can cut some slack.
That leads us to the present time. In garbage time early in the season, CDRW looked really good for SU. Against Colgate, he went 10/13 for 149 yards. and three touchdowns, a career day for the redshirt sophomore. A week later, Del Rio-Wilson had another solid showing in garbage time against Western Michigan. After struggles by Garrett Shrader and an apparent injury against Virginia Tech, CDRW was thrown back into the spotlight to start the primetime Friday night game against Boston College.

Evolution vs. Revolution: where did it all go wrong for Dino Babers and Syracuse football? (TNIAAM; Chiappone)
Days before the Syracuse Orange faced the Clemson Tigers on Sept. 30, head coach Dino Babers entered his weekly press conference with all the right feelings: confidence, optimism, determination.
Could you blame him? The Orange just secured a second-straight 4-0 start and the program’s first out-of-conference sweep. With the Tigers looking vulnerable, Syracuse University students rallied together with a first-ever “Clemson game camp out.” Babers and company WERE eyeing a second-straight bowl game bid, and the arrow was clearly pointing up.
That was then. Over a month later, Syracuse remains at four wins and without a victory over the ACC. Babers and the Orange lost their first five ACC games by an average of 24.6 points, including Friday night’s 17-10 defeat at home against the Boston College Eagles. A once-promising season which pointed towards building consistency has regressed into uncertainty, especially with Syracuse needing two wins in its last three games to avenge this season.
The shift from optimism to frustration showed on Monday, when Babers addressed the media in anticipation of the BC game. Look at the videos side-by-side. Note the difference in Babers’ tone and demeanor. It’s night and day.

How Syracuse football transfers fared: Justin Lamson uses arm, legs to lead Stanford to win (PS; Owens)
Stanford quarterback Justin Lamson used both his legs and his arm to help lift the Cardinal to a 10-7 win over Washington State in a Pac-12 Conference game on Saturday.
Lamson shares time at quarterback with Ashton Daniels, but has often been more of a runner. That was again true on Saturday, as Lamson rushed 20 times for 64 yards and tossed just one pass on the day. Daniels, meanwhile, was 15-of-31 passing for 115 yards.
Lamson’s one completion agains the Cougars turned out to be a crucial one, though, and it came when he didn’t even line up behind center.
On a first-and-10 from the Cougars’ 28 in the third quarter and Stanford trailing 7-0, Lamson lined up as a receiver. He took a pitch on a reverse and tossed a 27-yard strike to Sam Roush down to the Washington State 1-yard line. Lamson ran it in for a touchdown on the next play.

Friedlander: What we learned about every ACC football team in Week 10 - Saturday Road (saturdayroad.com; Friedlander)
Dabo Swinney at Clemson and Dave Doeren at NC State led their teams to victories on Saturday that made them the winningest coach in their respective school’s history. And they both overcame adversity to do it.
That, however, is where the similarities end.
Their record-setting victories were as disparate as their personalities.
The brash and energetic Swinney led his team to a 31-23 upset of No. 15 Notre Dame that snapped a 2-game losing streak and answered his growing number of critics, not the least of which was a certain radio talk show caller from Spartanburg.
Doeren, who describes himself as a “blue-collar, hand-in-the-dirt” kind of guy, kept his team calm and under control despite its offensive struggles to grit out a 20-6 win against Miami for his 78th win in 11 seasons with the Wolfpack.
The victory was also State’s 6th this season, making it the 3rd ACC team to earn bowl eligibility this week. With Florida State clinching a spot in the conference championship game and Louisville moving a step closer to joining the Seminoles in Charlotte, Week 10 was truly one for the books.
So let’s take a look at what we learned about each of the ACC’s 14 teams.
Boston College
Remember all those interceptions in the Eagles’ spring game? There were 5. At the time, we didn’t know if the pick party was the result of an aggressive, ball-hawking secondary or a warning sign of a turnover-prone offense.We finally learned the answer Friday.
BC intercepted 4 Syracuse passes, including 2 by ACC leader Elijah Jones, to compensate for an off-day by quarterback Thomas Castellanos and secure a 17-10 victory. CJ Clinkscales and Cole Batson had the others, with the latter clinching the win inside the final 2½ minutes.
Friday’s victory was the Eagles’ 5th straight after a 1-3 start. While we won’t officially learn if it’s enough to save coach Jeff Hafley’s job until after the season, we did at least learn that his team will be going to a bowl game after missing out on the postseason last year.
Clemson
We learned that Tyler from Spartanburg is one heck of a motivator. We also learned why Dabo Swinney and Garrett Riley have insisted on giving Phil Mafah so many carries when they have an All-ACC running back in Will Shipley.With Shipley sidelined in concussion protocol, Mafah ran for 186 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Tigers’ 31-23 upset of Notre Dame. And he did it on 30 carries, the most by a Clemson back since Wayne Gallman also had 30 against Auburn in 2016.
The win came after a week of turmoil, fueled by Swinney’s emotional response to criticism from the aforementioned Tyler on the coach’s radio call-in show. It also ended Clemson’s first 2-game losing streak since 2011.
But we learned that even in victory, the Tigers’ problems with turnovers haven’t gone away. A Cade Klubnik interception just after halftime helped the Irish get back into the game and a late fumble by Mafah gave Notre Dame 1 final chance to pull the game out. This time, though, they got away with the mistakes – thanks to the spotty play of Irish quarterback Sam Hartman, who is now 0-5 in his career against Clemson.
Duke
The Blue Devils are short-handed at quarterback and on the offensive line. But we learned Thursday night that there’s no shortage of grit and determination in Mike Elko’s program. It was best illustrated by the performance of 3rd-string quarterback Grayson Loftis, who was thrown into a difficult situation against Wake Forest because of injuries to starter Riley Leonard and backup Henry Belin IV.While the true freshman wasn’t great, completing only 7-of-19 passes for 83 yards, a touchdown and an interception, he was good enough. With the help of running backs Jaquez Moore and Jordan Waters, and a defense that forced a pivotal 4th-quarter turnover on an interception by defensive end Ryan Moore, he was able to help Duke avoid its first 3-game losing streak under Eklo.
We also learned that the Blue Devils are still as good as ever at field goal “defense.” After Wake’s Matthew Dennis missed twice on Thursday, both from inside 40 yards, their opponents are now only 7-of-13 on 3-pointers this season.
Florida State
The Seminoles gave the College Football Playoff committee an excuse to drop them from 4th to 5th in next week’s rankings with a performance that at face value was less than impressive. But if the committee members do a little research, they’ll learn that Saturday’s 24-7 win at Pitt was much better than it looked.Let’s start with who didn’t play. Neither Keon Coleman nor Johnny Wilson, who have 63 catches and 11 touchdowns between them. It was on the road, in cold weather against a conference opponent that, while struggling through a down season, has already knocked off 1 ranked team.
Jordan Travis did Jordan Travis things, throwing for 360 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a score. And we learned that FSU has some depth at receiver. Ja’Khi Douglas came into the game with only 2 catches this season, both last week at Wake Forest. He ended up leading the Seminoles with 6 receptions for 115 yards on Saturday.
FSU’s defense also pitched a shutout after falling behind 7-0 early in the 2nd quarter. It forced 3 turnovers, limited the Panthers to 89 rushing yards and held Pitt to 0-for-11 on 3rd-down opportunities.
Georgia Tech
We learned that you don’t have to run the triple option to put up big rushing numbers at Georgia Tech. After churning out 348 yards on the ground in last week’s upset of North Carolina, Tech put up another Paul Johnson-like 305 yards in an impressive win against Virginia.It was a couple of guys named Haynes that did the majority of the damage. Running back Jamal Haynes led the way with 119 yards and a touchdown while quarterback Haynes King also got into the act by rushing for 83 yards and 2 scores.
The win also showed us that the Yellow Jackets can, in fact, win back-to-back games. They had alternated wins and losses through their first 8 games. At 5-4, Brent Key’s team is now over .500 this late in the season for the first time since they were also 5-4 in 2018 – Johnson’s last season. That’s also the last time Tech was bowl eligible, a goal it can accomplish by winning 1 of its final 3 games.
Louisville
With leading receiver Jamari Thrash out with an injury, it made sense that the Cardinals would try to run the ball against a Hokies defense that came into the game leading the ACC with 30 sacks. And they did it successfully, churning out 231 yards on the ground. They were so proficient at running the ball that quarterback Jack Plummer needed only to throw the ball 12 times, completing 11 for 141 yards and a touchdown.In the process, though, we learned that Louisville has a lot more talent in its running back room than just Jawhar Jordan. The ACC’s 2nd leading rusher played Saturday despite being bothered by a sore hamstring. But he gained only 57 yards on 14 carries.
The bulk of the damage was done by his backup Isaac Guerendo. The 6-1, 225-pound senior got into the end zone 3 times, twice on runs of 30 yards or more, while rushing for 146 yards. Thanks to his career-best performance and a defense that has gone 8 consecutive quarters without allowing a touchdown, we learned that the Cardinals are now officially the team to beat for the right to face Florida State in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 2.
Miami
We learned that the Hurricanes are their own worst enemy. They turned the ball over and despite outgaining NC State 292-231, couldn’t find their way into the end zone in losing for the 3rd time in their past 4 games.While quarterback Tyler Van Dyke continues to struggle, throwing 3 more interceptions in the 20-6 loss, at least 1 member of the Hurricanes’ offense is thriving. Building on the momentum gained from an impressive overtime performance last week against Virginia, Mark Fletcher Jr. firmly established himself as Miami’s primary ground threat by rushing for a career-high 118 yards on 23 carries against the Wolfpack.
After missing 3 games with a stress fracture in his foot earlier in the season, the true freshman showed us that he’s back to full speed. His running, along with Kam Kinchens’ 3rd interception in as many games, was one of the few positives to come out of an otherwise ugly effort.
North Carolina
There isn’t much to be learned from a 59-7 beatdown of an overmatched FCS opponent called the Camels.The biggest thing to come out of Saturday’s game at Kenan Stadium is that star receiver Tez Walker, who spent the night in an Atlanta hospital after taking a heavy hit late in last Saturday’s loss at Georgia Tech, is healthy. He had 2 catches for 41 yards, both for touchdowns.
We also learned that the ACC’s leading rusher, Omarion Hampton, became the fastest Tar Heel to reach the 1,000-yard rushing mark in a season since Giovanni Bernard did it in 8 games in 2019. This is game 9 for UNC. Hampton ran for 144 yards and surpassed the 1,000 mark on a 54-yard touchdown dash midway through the 2nd half.
The Tar Heels’ defense also healed some wounds after allowing 78 points in its past 2 games, both losses. But it’s going to take until next week when they take on rival Duke to learn whether the improvement was legit or simply the product of playing an overmatched opponent.
NC State
Adversity seems to bring out the best in Dave Doeren and his Wolfpack. Seemingly down and out after getting shut out at Duke 2 weeks ago, they’ve gotten off the deck to win 2 straight to earn bowl eligibility for the 9th time in the coach’s 11-season tenure.And the most amazing thing about their revival is that they’ve done while getting little to nothing from their offense. The unit led by linebacker Payton Wilson, who finished with 16 tackles, 2 pass breakups and 2 quarterback hurries, held an ACC opponent without a touchdown for the 1st time since 2011 in helping its coach to his milestone victory.
Not only did Doeren surpass Earle Edwards for the school record, but we learned that with his 78th career win at NC State, he has now beaten every current member of the ACC.
Pittsburgh
There’s something about ranked ACC opponents that seems to bring out the best in the Panthers. After beating Louisville earlier in the season, they gave No. 4 Florida State a much tougher challenge than expected. They actually led 7-0 briefly after a 2nd quarter touchdown. And hey, they covered the 21.5-point spread.But other than learning that Pitt’s players have it in them to respond positively to the criticism they received from their own coach after last week’s embarrassment at Notre Dame, there’s not a lot left to find out about the Panthers during this lost season.
Syracuse
We learned, courtesy of the fans at Dome who stuck around until the bitter end on Thursday, that the folks in Upstate New York are running out of patience with Dino Babers. Their chants of “Fire Dino” were clearly audible on the ESPN broadcast as the Orange stumbled to their 5th straight loss after a 4-0 start.On the plus side, Syracuse’s defense played by far its best game since mid-September. But all that did was hold the score down thanks to a putrid offense that managed only 34 passing yards and committed 4 turnovers.
And yes, quarterback Garrett Shrader didn’t play because of an undisclosed medical issue. But that’s not an excuse. The Orange have scored only 3 touchdowns in their last 4 games combined and now find themselves in serious danger of missing out on bowl eligibility.
That’s the kind of result that gets coaches fired.

Pat Narduzzi Not Given Explanation on Unsportsmanlike, ACC Doesn’t Clarify (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Ludwig)
Pat Narduzzi is in his ninth season coaching Pitt football, well into his third decade as a collegiate coach, and he’s never seen anything like Gavin Bartholomew’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
When Gavin Bartholomew was flagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty call well after the conclusion of a play in the third quarter, as Bartholomew walked on the Pitt sideline, it certainly was a major turning point in the course of the contest.
“We got a penalty on the sideline when our quarterback got hit late cutting out of bounds,” Narduzzi said after the game. “Whatever, guys were talking. I’ve never seen a penalty called on the sideline when there’s 40 guys on the sideline, but you have to overcome all those things. You have to shut your mouth and play the game of football.”
Pitt went from a 4th-and-4 at the 26-yard line, well within Ben Sauls’ field goal range, to a 4th-and-19 at the 41, which ultimately resulted in a 21-yard punt from Caleb Junko. And the ‘Noles wound up driving 80 yards in 11 plays to turn a 3-point lead into a 10-point lead.
The 10-point swing was costly for Pitt at the end of the day. Pat Narduzzi said he wasn’t given an explanation for the call, but he said Bartholomew didn’t say anything.
“Gavin didn’t say anything to the officials,” Narduzzi said. “So, they were talking about happy birthday or something. I don’t know what, but it wasn’t one person. It wasn’t Gavin. I think maybe that’s who they called it on, but just chippy like on any sideline. I’ve never seen it called before. I don’t get it. I’ve seen a lot of things.”
The officials didn’t clarify anything to Narduzzi, and courtesy of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Noah Hiles, ACC supervisor of officiating Al Riveron said, “That’s an unsportsmanlike conduct, which is a judgment call by an official, so we’re gonna leave it at that.”
Pitt ultimately lost to Florida State 24-7, the official rulings doing Pitt no favors, but the offensive ineptitude hurting even worse.
The Panthers failed to convert a single third down, turned the ball over three times and mustered just a single touchdown for the second game in a row. It was the second straight top-15 matchup, but Pitt’s offense under Frank Cignetti Jr. failed miserably once again. And that’s been a problem all season.

Don't look now, but Georgia Tech is up to third in the ACC Standings after their win over Virginia.
The Yellow Jackets are 4-2 in conference play after their road win over the Cavaliers and they have a chance to finish 6-2 in ACC play.
Florida State has now clinched a spot in the ACC Championship after overcoming a slow start to beat Pitt, but their opponent has yet to be determined. The Seminoles have been the best team in the conference all season and will be heavy favorites against whoever they play in the championship game.
Louisville is getting closer to clinching a spot in the championship game. They control their own destiny after throttling Virginia Tech at home yesterday and the Cardinals have Virginia and Miami left on their ACC schedule. It has been a great debut season for Jeff Brohm at his alma mater and they have a chance to get to the conference title.
After Georgia Tech, there is a cluster of two-loss ACC teams that are trying to stay alive in the ACC race. Duke, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, NC State, and Boston College are all 3-2 in the conference, and while they are all longshots to get to the ACC title game, they could position themselves well if Louisville falters in the next two weeks.
Miami suffered their third conference loss on Saturday when the lost 20-6 against NC State. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke threw three interceptions and the offense for the Hurricanes could never get going.

Duke picked up the home victory over Wake Forest, 24-21, becoming bowl eligible in the process. With Riley Leonard sidelined with a toe injury, QB Grayson Loftis made his first collegiate start for the Blue Devils, tossing a touchdown in his debut. Both Jaquez Moore and Jordan Waters ran for 76 yards and a touchdown for Duke in the win. For Wake, QB Mitch Griffis went 16-19 passing for 241 yards in the loss.
Louisville football continues to rise in rankings as it inches closer to 1st ACC title game (C-J; Cubit)
Louisville, Florida State and North Carolina remain as the ACC’s lone ranked teams.
U of L is 11th in the latest US LBM coaches poll and AP Top 25, released Sunday. FSU is 4th in both major polls while UNC is 23rd in the coaches poll and 24th in the Associated Press poll.
Louisville’s ranking is the program's highest since it was No. 10 in the coaches poll and AP Top 25 on Sept. 11, 2016 following a 62-28 win over Syracuse.
U of L is also on the rise in ESPN’s Football Power Index rankings, moving up to No. 18 with the 12th strongest record in the country. Its remaining schedule — which includes Virginia, Miami and Kentucky — is ranked 21st with the squad given a 10.2% chance of winning out.
FSU is the only ACC team ahead of Louisville in the FPI rankings. It is No. 7 with the third-strongest record nationally. Its remaining strength of schedule — Miami, North Alabama and Florida — ranks behind the Cardinals at No. 44.
The Seminoles and Cardinals are the top two teams in the ACC standings and will likely meet on Dec. 2 in the league's championship game. Florida State has already clinched its spot after beating Pitt, 24-7, on Saturday. The FPI gives the Seminoles a 75% chance of winning the conference while the Cardinals have a 23.3% chance of winning the league.

Florida State Clinches Spot in 2023 ACC Football Championship Game
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Florida State Seminoles clinched a spot in the 2023 ACC Football Championship Game with their win over the Pitt Panthers on Saturday. The nationally ranked Seminoles are 9-0 overall and 7-0 in ACC play this season.
It is the Seminoles' sixth trip to the ACC Football Championship Game and the first since 2014 (2004, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014) when they won their third consecutive ACC Championship title with a 37-35 win over Georgia Tech.

Louisville vs. Virginia football game first look: Story lines, key players, odds and more (C-J; Cubit)
It took the late Howard Schnellenberger six years to lead Louisville football to its first-ever 10-win season. John L. Smith needed four years to set a new program-high mark of 11 wins, while it took Bobby Petrino and Charlie Strong two and three years, respectively, to match the bar Smith set.
Jeff Brohm is two wins away from a double-digit win season in Year 1. The Cardinals started the 2023 campaign with a 6-0 record and bounced back after a loss at Pitt by outscoring their last two opponents, 57-3. They’re undefeated at home and in position to make the ACC championship game for the first time ever at No. 2 in the league standings.
No. 11 Louisville (8-1, 5-1 ACC) will have a quick turnaround as it aims for win No. 9 against Virginia at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at L&N Stadium.
The excitement of the Cavaliers (2-7, 1-4) upsetting then-No. 10 North Carolina on Oct. 21 seems to have faded with the team losing back-to-back games, the latest of which was a 45-17 defeat to Georgia Tech at home.
Here are three story lines to watch ahead of Louisville’s ACC game against Virginia:

The thought occurred late Saturday night, as it has often these past few seasons, sometime between N.C. State sealing its 20-6 victory against Miami and Dave Doeren punctuating the moment with another memorable postgame interview moment.
“Chancellor Woodson, turn on the red light, big dog,” Doeren said on the ACC Network.
(Side note here: How many times has anyone addressed Randy Woodson as “big dog?” Do his fellow plant molecular biologists call him “big dog?” Probably not. But we digress.)
The overarching thought, watching the Wolfpack again use its defense to dispatch of a supposedly more talented team, was this: What if State had even an average or slightly above-average offense? And then, naturally: What if it had North Carolina’s offense?
Earlier in the day in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels snoozed through the first quarter against Campbell but woke up and pretty much did what they wanted the rest of the way during a 59-7 victory against the Camels of Buies Creek and the Big South Conference. You can’t take much from most games against FCS opponents but, once sufficiently awake, UNC’s offense again impressed.
And so here it is, the question of the day: How good of a college football team would it be if UNC’s offense and N.C. State’s defense could be squished together, in some sort of Frankensteinian football concoction? There’d be some things to work out in this scenario, like the purplish hue to the jerseys after mixing red and light blue, but let’s leave those things to the side for now.

One spot in the ACC Championship has been officially clinched.
With Florida State's win over Pitt, the Seminoles are officially going to Charlotte to play for the ACC title. Who FSU will play is still being sorted out, however.
Louisville is the front-runner to make the ACC title game to play Florida State and the Cardinals control their own destiny. With remaining ACC games against Virginia and Miami remaining, Jeff Brohm is closing in on an ACC title appearance in his first season.
So how does the rest of the ACC shake out?
14, Pitt (2-7)- Last week: 14
The Panthers played hard against FSU yesterday, but the Panthers came up short and their miserable season continues. Pitt now will officially miss a bowl game and a lot of it falls on the feet of their offense. Pat Narduzzi is going to have a lot of things to figure out this offseason.
13. Syracuse (4-5)- Last week: 13
The Orange have not lost five in a row, the latest loss coming against Boston College, Syracuse did not have quarterback Garrett Shrader in the game against the Eagles, and Syracuse has had the worst injury luck of anyone in the ACC this year. Head coach Dino Babers is on the hot seat and it is anyone's guess if he will still be the head coach.
12. Wake Forest (4-5)- Last week: 12
Wake Forest almost upset Duke on Thursday, but the Demon Deacons fell short. Wake is unlikely to make a bowl game this season and bowl games have become the norm for the Demon Deacons under Dave Clawson but they will have to get two wins in their three remaining games against NC State, Notre Dame, and Syracuse.

Stolen Funk ‘n Waffles food truck and trailer found 70 miles away; will ‘live to serve another waffle’ (PS; $; Alba)
A stolen Funk ‘n Waffles food truck and trailer were recovered Friday night more than 70 miles from where it was taken.
Owner Adam Gold said he got six to eight tips on the location of his truck and bright purple trailer as someone drove it all the way down to Binghamton. He received sightings at gas stations in LaFayette and Cortland.
Finally, an employee of a downtown Binghamton bar spotted the truck and trailer on the side of a city street and reached out to Funk ‘n Waffles on Facebook, Gold said.
The truck was taken sometime Thursday night or Friday morning from a storage facility in Salina, Gold said.
When the truck and trailer were recovered, Gold said he noticed the truck’s front end was crushed in and a generator and point-of-sale system were taken.
The truck will be towed back to Syracuse and is potentially totaled but the food trailer is mostly undamaged and “will live to serve another waffle,” Gold said. “This puppy is ready for its third season.”
Gold had just cleaned the food truck and trailer and was preparing to put it in winter storage when it was taken from the facility on Seventh North Street.

Syracuse area isn’t building enough housing. These new numbers show how grim it is (PS; $; Tampone)
Local politicians, real estate experts and advocates all agree the Syracuse area isn’t building enough new housing.
Numbers from the Census Bureau’s monthly building permits survey show just how bad the situation is. Permits for both new single-family units and units of any type reached low points in 2022 in census records dating back over 30 years.
The dismal numbers are one factor in why the current housing market in Syracuse is such a nightmare for buyers: There just aren’t enough homes to go around for everyone looking.
Higher prices for existing homes and interest rates aren’t helping either.
The building permits survey tracks permits for new, privately owned housing units in metro areas and counties across the country.
The numbers go back to 1990, which happens to be the year permits for total new housing units in Onondaga County peaked at just over 1,400. The overall trend since then has been down.
Permits for new housing units totaled just 347 last year, an all-time low in census records.
The decline in permits for single-family units has been even steadier. Permits for those units were higher than the year before just three times in Onondaga County since 2008.
