According to legend, pepper pot soup was created on today's date in 1777, ten days after General George Washington and the Continental Army had set up their winter camp at Valley Forge. The camp was located about twenty miles from Philadelphia, where the British were headquartered. The Winter of 1777-1778 ended up being especially harsh and bitter, and the troops often went without bread or meat. Shortly after arriving, some troops almost mutinied, and about a third of the men didn't even have boots. Farmers in the area sold their produce to the British instead of Continental soldiers because the Continental currency was depreciated and unreliable. It didn't look like the army would be able to hold together with the meager provisions they had.
General Washington sent out foraging groups to look for food supplies. It is believed that Washington told his baker general, Christopher Ludwick, to come up with a soup that "will warm and strengthen the body of a soldier and inspire his flagging spirit." Whatever was found during the foraging was used to make the soup. Legend says that the soup was first made on December 29, 1777, and had tripe, other meat and vegetable scraps, and peppercorn and other spices. Perhaps the biggest part of the legend surrounding pepper pot soup is that it rejuvenated the troops, not only to get them through the winter but to set the foundation for them to win the war. In fact, it earned the nickname "the soup that won the war."

2027 CB Khalid Rainer reacts to Syracuse offer (247sports.com; Finneral)
Class of 2027 cornerback Khalid Rainer announced his offer from Syracuse on Christmas day. He thinks highly of Syracuse and was thrilled to pick up an offer.
“When I received my Syracuse offer it was the perfect gift for Christmas,” Rainer said. “I was super excited when receiving this offer.”
Rainer is a talented player, who had a successful freshman season at Trinity Episcopal School in Richmond, Virginia. He views Syracuse as a well-rounded option for him.
“I know that it’s early in the process, but Syracuse is definitely a high-ranked school on my board,” Rainer said. “The Syracuse fan base is unmatched compared to most schools and the academics will keep my life stable after football.”
Rainer has picked up a lot of attention early in his high school career. Along with Syracuse, he has earned offers from Penn State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, East Carolina, Central Michigan, Arkansas State and Delaware State. He is happy with his progress so far and looks to keep improving.
“Man, I’ve developed so much over the past year,” Rainer said. “All the hard work with my DB trainers and the weightlifting made me bloom so much. I’m mainly working on sharpening my DB fundamentals and just gaining weight. I’m also working on boosting my football IQ by studying the game.”

Class of 2025 New Rochelle (NY) Iona Prep offensive lineman Rowan Byrne is one of the most coveted prospects in the Northeast. His early offer list includes Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Stanford, Syracuse, Texas A&M and Wisconsin, among others.
The 6-5, 285 pounder has been recruited by Syracuse for quite some time. The previous staff was the first to offer him back in January 2022. He visited in April of this year for Junior Day and said the visit increased his interest in the Orange.
There has, however, been a coaching change following this season. Fran Brown is now the head coach, and wasted no time reaching out to Byrne.
"Yeah the new staff reoffered me right when they got there," Byrne said.
Byrne thinks highly of coach Brown and the new direction of the Orange, but is still learning about their plan as well as developing relationships with them. The next step is to get on campus for a visit, but will have at least one familiar face when he does.
"It's definitely possible I get back on campus at some point," Byrne said. "I think the new staff is great. It's awesome they got coach Ahmad back on staff. One of the best recruiters in the country."

Syracuse football alum Dwight Freeney named 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)
Eight distinguished members of Syracuse Orange football are already enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio - tied for seventh-most among all colleges.
Dwight Freeney may soon move them up to sixth.
The 'Cuse alum was just unveiled as a finalist for the HOF Induction Class of 2024:
Freeney suited up for Paul Pasqualoni's Orange from 1998-2001 and is one of the most decorated defensemen in program history. Take a look at his senior year stats and you might be convinced the Greatest Show on Turf was in Syracuse, not St. Louis:

Syracuse football backup quarterback Luke MacPhail enters name into transfer portal (report) (PS; $; Carlson)
Syracuse quarterback Luke MacPhail, who was buried deep on the Orange’s list of options at the position, has entered his name into the transfer portal, according to multiple reports.
The three main recruiting websites -- Rivals, 247 Sports and On3Sports -- all reported that MacPhail has entered his name into the portal.
MacPhail arrived at Syracuse in 2020 as a two-star recruit and a preferred walk-on. He was fourth out of four quarterbacks on the team’s depth chart this season behind Garrett Shrader, Carlos De Rio-Wilson and Braden Davis.
When the Orange lost their first two options to injury, Syracuse opted to start using players from other positions under center and running an unconventional offense rather than entrust the job to one of its deeper options.

Transfer linebacker lands squarely on Nebraska football radar (huskercorner.com; Vandervoort)
The Nebraska football team has surprisingly stayed out of the transfer portal this year, except for their pursuit of a new quarterback. The Huskers have added just one transfer player so far, in FCS transfer Blye Hill. But things could speed up a bit in that direction in the very near future.
Earlier this week, the Nebraska football team dipped its toe back in the transfer portal waters in the form of an official offer to former Idaho linebacker Xe’Ree Alexander. It’s possible that they’re going to go in there one more time to go after a Syracuse linebacker that recently became a free agent.
Stefon Thompson from Syracuse announced he was transferring on Wednesday afternoon. There are some ties there that could lead the Huskers to make an offer. The fact that he’s got two more years in college despite being a freshman in 2020 is another reason why he might be attractive.
Jackson started his Syracuse career back in 2020 and had a decent outing. He of course gets that year back because of the COVID pandemic. He also redshirted in 2022, getting him that second year.
In between those seasons, Thompson racked up 167 tackles and 9 sacks. He’s also got three forced fumbles. And he’s a protege of Tony White.

Syracuse Football: Three All-ACC players returning for senior year is positively massive (itlh; Adler)
Like every other team across the country in college football, Syracuse football has seen numerous players from its 2023 roster enter the NCAA’s transfer portal.
It’s inevitable. One of the latest departures, to me, was a pretty big one, as redshirt sophomore linebacker Stefon Thompson said he was going to hit the portal.
Still, on paper anyway, what head coach Fran Brown and his staff are assembling for their roster for the 2024 season looks impressive.
Given the team’s reasonable 2024 schedule, many fans and some national commentators are speculating that the ‘Cuse could make a run at the Atlantic Coast Conference title and perhaps even the expanded College Football Playoff, which is going from four participants to 12.
We’ll have to see about that. However, in recent days, three All-ACC performers said they would come back to Syracuse football for their respective senior years, and I can’t stress enough how monumental this is for the Orange program.
Syracuse football got several doses of huge news this holiday season.
Earlier this month, amid the early signing period, Brown and his assistants have put together a terrific 2024 class, made up of at least 18 high school seniors and at least seven college transfers.
Still, all of those ‘Cuse commits are new to the team. It’s important for the Orange coaching staff to also retain key veteran players on the existing SU roster.

Syracuse football coaches have doled out numerous scholarship offers to 2025 high school prospects of late, and some of those offers have gone to elite five-star players.
Case in point, the Orange coaching staff has offered 2025 five-star wide receiver Winston Watkins Jr. from Florida, he said via his X page on December 26.
Listed on the 247Sports Web site at 5-foot-10 and 172 pounds, Watkins holds more than 20 scholarship offers from top-flight programs, so the competition for the ‘Cuse to prevail here is intense.
That being said, I credit head coach Fran Brown and his staff for making a run at highly ranked prospects, whether in the 2025 class or other recruiting cycles.
Syracuse football has gotten into the mix for five-star junior WR Winston Watkins Jr.
In mid-November, according to media reports, Watkins de-committed from Colorado and reopened his recruitment back up. He had verbally committed to the Buffaloes on December 4 of 2022, the same day that Deion Sanders was hired as the Colorado head coach.Watkins attends the First Baptist Academy in Naples, Fla. As a junior in the 2023 season, per the MaxPreps Web site, he collected 1,907 all-purpose yards, or 238.4 all-purpose yards per game.

Syracuse Football: ‘Cuse scores top 8 of talented 3-star safety, Georgia in the mix (itlh; Adler)
On Christmas Day, 2025 three-star safety/athlete Jovan Clark from Chicago disclosed via his X page a top eight that includes Syracuse football.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Clark, who holds nearly 20 scholarship offers from a range of high-major programs, says his current top eight consist of the Orange, Georgia, Maryland, Missouri, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Kansas and Boston College.
The ‘Cuse coaching staff offered a scholarship to Clark in January of 2022, although that was the former SU coaching staff led by Dino Babers.
On December 4, former Georgia defensive backs coach Fran Brown was officially introduced as the new head coach of the Orange, replacing Babers.
Syracuse football has arrived in the top eight of three-star Jovan Clark.
Clark is a standout junior at Morgan Park High School in Chicago. He has put forth excellent junior and sophomore campaigns.
In the 2023 term, according to his bio on the MaxPreps Web site, Clark suited up in 12 games. He tallied 13 solo tackles, 48 assisted tackles, 61 total tackles, 5.1 tackles per game, 1.0 tackles for a loss, three interceptions, five passes defended and one fumble recovery.

Which Returning Player Is The Most Crucial? (orangefizz.net; Gotkin)
When a new coach comes to town, a lot of times a mass exodus occurs where all of a teams best players leave for the transfer portal. Just look at Texas A&M where Elijah Robinson comes from. Almost every player of note is leaving the Aggies. Fran Brown has kept the three most important players with eligibility remaining. Three players who could have entered the NFL draft or transferred to almost any school in the country.
Oronde Gadsden
It’s very hard to say that Gadsden isn’t the most important player in the list. Before the season, he was named one of the best players in all of college football before an injury took away his season. There are still a lot of question marks around who will be the top receiving options next year. Brown has brought in two WR transfers from Georiga and a couple freshmen, but Gadsden is a proven target for Kyle McCord. The real question though is if Gadsden moves to a true WR. With Dan Villari returning and the freshman Jamie Tremble coming in, there will be so much talent in the TE room.
Justin Barron
In terms of team culture, there’s almost no one you’d want to return more than Justin Barron. The safety/rover played almost all season with an injury but that didn’t stop him from making a huge impact. His role could change a little in a new offense if Brown and Robinson go away from the 3-3-5. Barron has proven to be a good enough college football player though where any coach would want him on the roster and he can play in almost any defensive scheme.

The NFL’s regular season is coming to a close, and many Syracuse Orange alumni are competing to play in the postseason. Here’s the latest rundown of how the former Orangemen are performing at football’s highest level heading into week 17.
Garrett Williams, Arizona Cardinals
The rookie is again dealing with a knee injury after beginning the season on the injured reserve with a torn ACL. Williams was ruled out for Arizona’s week 16 matchup, but the injury doesn’t appear to be significant. His next chance to take the field will be Sunday against Philadelphia.
Matthew Bergeron, Atlanta Falcons
Bergeron allowed two pressures and no sacks across 63 snaps in Atlanta’s win over Indianapolis last week. He still hasn’t allowed a quarterback sack since week 10 and ranks third amongst all eligible rookie offensive guards with a 59.4 rating, according to Pro Football Focus.
Kingsley Jonathan, Buffalo Bills
Jonathan’s seen an uptick in playing time on Buffalo’s defensive line after an injury to starting edge rusher A.J. Epenesa. Over 16 snaps the past two weeks, the second-year man registered one tackle while splitting reps with fellow backup Shaq Lawson. Jonathan could have an elevated role once again if Epenesa can’t go Sunday against New England.

No. 17 SMU (11-2) entered today's Wasabi Fenway Bowl as a double-digit favorite over unranked Boston College (6-6).
But after a battle in the pouring rain, the Mustangs left Fenway Park with a postseason loss and a 14-23 final score in favor of the Eagles.
SMU accepted an invitation to join the ACC earlier this year. While the Mustangs' participation in the conference doesn't begin until 2024, today was a little taste of what the program can expect moving forward.
Everyone had the same message for SMU after today's nine-point upset loss.
"Welcome to the ACC."
"Welcome to the ACC, enjoy your brief time here," one fan wrote.
"Y’all got baptized by BC. Welcome to the ACC," another said.

SMU vs. Boston College: The Eagles scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to get a 23-14 win over #24 Mustangs. In a battle of future ACC conference opponents, Boston College shredded the SMU rushing defense for 263 rushing yards at 6.8 yards per carry. Running back Kye Robichaux ran the ball 12 times for 87 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Thomas Castellanos only threw for 102 yards on 11 of 18 passing, but he did a lot of damage running the ball. Castellanos had 155 yards and two fourth quarter touchdowns on 21 carries in the game. SMU's quarterback Kevin Jennings was 24-48 for 191 yards and a touchdown passing the ball, while also rushing for 51 yards.
Rutgers vs. Miami College Pinstripe Bowl Game Highlight | 2023 ACC Football (youtube; video; ACC DN)
Rutgers vs. Miami: The Hurricanes lost to the Scarlet Knights, 31-24, in the 2023 Pinstripe Bowl. After trailing 14-0 early, Miami took a 17-14 lead early in the second half, but a blocked punt returned for a touchdown swung the momentum back to Rutgers. Jacurri Brown was 20-31 for 181 yards and a touchdown passing, and he ran for 57 yards and two more touchdowns. Xavier Restrepo caught 11 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown. Restrepo finished the season with over 1,000 yards receiving and his 85 catches set a new Miami single season record. Rutgers gained 208 rushing yards on 45 carries with Kyle Monangai rushing for 163 of those yards. Monangai also had a touchdown and 17 receiving yards.

NC State vs. Kansas State: No.18 NC State did not have enough to outlast No.25 Kansas State in the 2023 Pop-Tarts Bowl as they lost, 28-19. 'Pack QB Brennan Armstrong finished the evening with 285 total yards, including a 31-yard rushing score. Trent Pennix scored from 60 yards out on a fake punt for NC State, and Kevin "KC" Concepcion had 7 receptions amassing 95 all-purpose yards.

USF made an emphatic statement in its first bowl appearance since 2018, dominating Syracuse from start to finish in a 45-0 win that featured several record-setting performances.First-year coach Alex Golesh did a remarkable job turning around a program that won eight games total in the four years before his arrival. USF finishes this season with seven wins -- its first winning season since 2017 -- and the largest margin of victory in a bowl game in school history. Like the Bulls did all season, they did it behind quarterback Byrum Brown and receiver Sean Atkins.
Brown threw for 213 yards and three touchdown passes to reach 26 on the season, breaking Quinton Flowers' single-season school record of 25 set in 2017. Brown also joined Flowers as the only two players in program history with 4,000 total yards in a season.
Meanwhile, Atkins had six catches for 93 yards and two scores, becoming the first player in school history to go over 1,000 receiving yards.
But the USF defense took center stage. The Bulls came into the game ranked No. 128 out of 130 FBS teams in total defense but completely shut down the Orange, who were playing without starting quarterback Garrett Shrader (shoulder surgery).
Syracuse turned once again to converted tight end Dan Villari and Braden Davis at quarterback, but nothing was working. USF forced four turnovers -- including a strip-sack fumble that Tramel Logan Jr. returned for a 61-yard score. USF special teams got involved, too, when Syracuse muffed the hold on a field goal attempt, and Aamaris Brown returned the fumble 64 yards for a score. Those two scores helped USF build a 31-0 lead at halftime, and the Bulls never looked back.
It was a disappointing end for Syracuse, which fired coach Dino Babers in November and had interim coach Nunzio Campanile in charge for the bowl. Incoming coach Fran Brown was in Boca to watch, and so was Ohio State transfer quarterback Kyle McCord, whom the Orange hope will help them improve next season. -- Andrea Adelson

What is it? As ACC fans who are tired of being treated like second-class citizens by ESPN and the CFP committee, we're boycotting all B1G-vs-SEC bowl matchups (including the Rose Bowl playoff game).Why? We're pushing back against having the SEC and the Big Ten crammed down our throats by the TV networks, the CFP Committee, the NCAA - pretty much every organization "in bed with" the Big Ten and the SEC.

Virginia Tech Football: Former Hokies wide receiver likes the "clear-cut identity" going forward of the program (fightinggobbler.com; Roche)
It was easy to see as the last two months went along, things were slowly changing in Blacksburg around the Virginia Tech football team. After starting 1-3, they won five out of eight ACC games to become bowl-eligible.
They ended with a very good Tulane team out of the AAC and despite them missing some key players and their head coach from an 11-2 team, they still had a lot of talent on the field against the Hokies. The momentum that Virginia Tech had from the end of the season they carried with them into the Military Bowl Wednesday in Annapolis, Maryland.
Following a 41-20 Virginia Tech win over the Green Wave, a former Hokies wide receiver, Eddie Royal gave his thought on the direction the program is heading going into 2024.

Following the game, Royal on X said that he "sees a clear-cut identity" and he "likes what he sees.''Royal isn't alone in what he's seeing. In two short seasons, the Hokies have made major strides under Brent Pry and the evidence has come in the last month. The former Penn State defensive coordinator has a lot of key pieces committed to returning next season instead of entering the transfer portal or declaring for the NFL.
Speaking of the transfer prortal, he has added four players, offensive lineman Montavious Cunningham, defensive linemen Kemari Copeland and Aeneas Peebles and linebacker Sam Brumfield. Throw in some recruits who are to make some decisions difficult for Pry and his staff, Virginia Tech's clear cut idenitiy is coming into focus.
It's hard not to like what the future holds for Virginia Tech in 2024 and beyond. There is a lot of talent returning and they like playing for Pry and the coaching staff. Things are turning around quickly in the Commonwealth for the Hokies.

What’s the big dig all about near Destiny USA? (PS; Moriarty)
Why are crews digging a huge hole at the northeast corner of Hiawatha Boulevard West and Van Rensselaer Street, removing many truckloads of dirt? Is some big new construction project underway in the city’s lakefront?
Nope.
It turns out, it’s routine cleanup work by the New York State Canal Corp.
The state is removing soil dredged a few years ago from the nearby Syracuse Inner Harbor and the Barge Canal channel that leads from Onondaga Lake to the harbor.
The Canal Corp. periodically dredges up to 60,000 cubic yards of soil from the bottom of the harbor and channel so they are deep enough for boats to navigate. Onondaga Creek is constantly dumping more soil into the waterways, so the dredging must be repeated now and then.
Shane Mahar, a spokesperson for the Canal Corp., said the soil is vacuumed up by a dredging barge and pumped to a disposal site between the canal and Van Rensselaer Street, where it is allowed to dry out for a few years.

The only fine-dining restaurant in Marcellus will serve its last meal this weekend (PS; Miller)
Daniel’s Grill, the only fine-dining option in this small village, will close its doors for good after dinner service on Saturday night.
Dan Curley, 62, owned the restaurant that sits along Nine Mile Creek with his wife Dina since 2004. They had been considering closing off and on over the past year. They finally decided last month to move on.
“I love what I do,” he said Thursday afternoon. “But my wife is ready to retire, and I can’t do it without her. It’s sad, I know. The mom-and-pop places are going away.”
Between the two of them, the Curleys have more than 50 years of combined experience in cooking and catering expertise. Before opening Daniel’s, Dan cooked in restaurants all over the East Coast, including Boston and New York.
Specialties at Daniel’s included lobster ravioli with pink vodka sauce, New York strip steak au poivre, seafood puttanesca topped with fried calamari and crab cakes.
Even during the Covid-19 shutdown, Daniel’s remained popular. Former syracuse.com restaurant critic Jane Marmaduke Woodman raved about her takeout meals that she reviewed from home.
“The day is fast approaching when we’ll feel comfortable dining inside a restaurant,” she wrote. “Never having tried Daniel’s Grill before, we were delighted to discover a place we’ll be returning to for.”
