National Milk Day celebrates milk and marks the anniversary—according to a number of secondary sources—of the day milk was first delivered in sterilized glass bottles: January 11, 1878. The delivery took place in New York City and was at the hand of the New York Dairy Company, which was owned by Alexander Campbell and located in Brooklyn, and which later became known as the Alex. Campbell Milk Company. (Although, other sources say the first glass container for milk was the Lester Milk Jar, and another early patent was made by Dr. Henry Thatcher after he saw a child accidentally drop their rag doll into an open milk bucket in 1884.) The delivery of bottled milk was critical because it helped ensure that safe milk was available to those who didn't live on farms.

Syracuse Football: Ibn McDaniels, All-State DB/WR in New Jersey, to officially visit (itlh; Adler)
Fast-rising 2024 defensive back and wide receiver Ibn McDaniels from New Jersey will take an official visit to Syracuse football this coming weekend, starting on January 12.
SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister first reported this news. McDaniels is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound multi-positional athlete who attends Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, N.J.
According to McAllister’s piece, McDaniels has received a scholarship offer from the Orange coaching staff.

Syracuse football will host 2024 DB/WR Ibn McDaniels on an official visit.
Per his bio on nj.com, during the 2023 season for Elizabeth, McDaniels caught 44 passes for 744 yards and eight receiving scores. On defense, he recorded 34 total tackles, one fumble recovery, three interceptions and one pick-six.McAllister, a top recruiting analyst, wrote in part that McDaniels “is a long, smooth athlete who can run and has great instincts. He looks every bit the part of a power five caliber recruit.”

Syracuse Football: ‘Championships are the expectation,’ new 4-star commit says (itlh; Adler)
On Monday evening, top junior-college player Michael Nwokocha said via his X page that he was committing to Syracuse football, and the 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive lineman has some big goals during his career on the Hill.
Not too long ago, Nwokocha took an official visit to the Orange, and he said in an interview with SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister that his trip to Central New York “felt like it was home.”
Nwokocha comes to the ‘Cuse after spending two seasons at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas.
He picked up a scholarship offer from the Orange on December 27, and Nwokocha’s offer sheet also included Georgia, Houston, Tennessee, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Arizona State, Indiana, Mississippi State and Purdue, among others, according to recruiting services.

Florida transfer O-lineman who visited Syracuse commits to Nebraska (PS; Leiker)
Despite a visit with Syracuse football over the weekend, Florida transfer Micah Mazzccua announced Wednesday he’s committed to Nebraska.
Mazzccua, an offensive lineman who started 11 games at right guard for the Gators in 2023, was among a small handful of visitors the Orange hosted Jan. 4-6.
This is Mazzccua’s second time transferring. He left Baylor after three seasons for Florida following the conclusion of the 2022 season and now has one season of collegiate eligibility remaining.
Mazzccua had a 69% overall offense grade from Pro Football Focus, along with a 69.1% pass blocking grade and 68.4% run blocking grade in 2023. He totaled 743 snaps on the year.

Williams to Serve as O-Line Coach - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)
Dale Williams, a veteran offensive line coach with more than 25 years of coaching experience has joined the Syracuse football staff as its offensive line coach.
"I'd like to thank Coach Brown for naming me offensive line coach," Williams said. "I'm excited to coach at a University with such a strong tradition. I've played in the Dome as both a player and coach as a member of the visiting team, and I'm looking forward to a much better atmosphere as a member of the Syracuse football program."
Williams joins the Orange from Louisville, where he most recently served as the Cardinals' Senior Quality Control Coach, in a season that saw the program make its first trip to the ACC title game in program history.
Prior to that, he spent six seasons at Purdue as the team's offensive line coach, where he helped lead the Boilermakers win the 2022 Big Ten West title and two bowl victories, defeating Tennessee in the 2021 Music City Bowl and Arizona in the 2017 Foster Farms Bowl.
"Coach Williams is really, really intelligent and understands the screen game a lot differently than a lot of other people we interviewed," Brown said. "He has a good grasp on what they're doing at the NFL level when it comes to screens. He loves running power and counter. He loves mauling people. Just everything about what it is to be an o-line guy. He's able to relate to the kids and they love being around him. This is a tough offensive line guy, I like him a lot and am glad he's on our staff."
While in West Lafayette, Williams helped Purdue post some of its best offensive seasons in program history. The offensive line's protection helped the Boilermaker quarterbacks set single-season passing records for yards (4,620), completions (407), completion percentage (.708) and passing first downs (221) in 2021. The team's 355.4 yards per game through the air that season was fifth in the nation and second in the Big Ten that season. Gus Hartwig, Greg Long and Tyler Witt were selected to the All-Big Ten team.
His 2020 unit paved the way for the Boilermakers to average 390.5 yards of total offense and lead the Big Ten in passing yards (309.0 yards per game). Hartwig, Long, Grant Hermanns and Spencer Holstage were all named honorable mention Big Ten from his unit.
Williams' line helped Purdue average 393.2 yards of total offense in 2019, 443.9 yards per game in 2018 and 403.1 yards per game in his first season with the program in 2017. Matt McCann (2018 and 2019), Kirk Barron (2017 and 2018) and David Steinmetz (2017) earned all-league honors over that span.
Prior to his stint at Purdue, Williams was the offensive line coach at Western Kentucky in 2016. The Hilltoppers' high-powered offense scored 45.5 points per game, racked up 523.1 yards of total offense and 336.8 yards per game passing in his one season there. The line surrendered just 22 sacks on 471 passing attempts, and offensive tackle Forrest Lamp was named a Third-Team All-American and was a First-Team All-CUSA selection under Williams' tutelage. Lamp was selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers. The 2016 Hilltoppers squad finished the season with a victory over Memphis in the Boca Raton Bowl.
Previously, Williams has stops at Florida Atlantic, Findlay, Gardner-Webb, North Greenville College and West Virginia. He also spent four seasons coaching at Lake Worth and Olympic Heights high schools between college stops.
Williams was at FAU from 2005-11, where he helped transform the Owls into a postseason regular. In 2007, Florida Atlantic were co-Sun Belt Champions – sending them to the program's first-ever bowl game – where they won the New Orleans Bowl. A year later, the team won five of their final six contests and went on to win the 2008 Motor City Bowl. In each season, the Owls finished in the top-15 nationally in fewest sacks allowed, protecting QB Rusty Smith to win Sun Belt Player of the Year honors in 2007. Three linemen – John Rizzo, Jarrid Smith and David Matlock – earned All-Sun Belt accolades over those seasons.
His unit also paved the way for the first 1,000-yard back in program history in 2008, as Charles Pierre ran for 1,009 yards. A year later, running back Alfred Morris shattered the program record, rushing for 1,392 yards behind Williams' line. He also neared the 1,000-yard mark in 2010, finishing with 928 yards.
Williams spent five seasons at Findlay from 2000-04, starting as the offensive line coach (2000-02), before adding offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator to his duties for his final two seasons there. His 2002 squad finished ranked 25th nationally with a 9-2 mark. The offensive line allowed just 15 sacks in the 11 game schedule, while also paving the way for Robert Campbell to run for 1,564 yards. Two years later, the line blocked for Michael Sampson to set a then-school record with 1,659 rushing yards for the Oilers.
Prior to Findlay, Williams spent three seasons, from 1997 to 1999, coaching the offensive line at Gardner-Webb following two seasons at North Greenville College. Williams got his start in the coaching profession during a three-year stint as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, West Virginia.
A three-year letterman and two-year starter for the Mountaineers, he was named the team's best lineman during its run to the 1994 Sugar Bowl. He earned his bachelor's degree from West Virginia in 1994, and his master's degree from the school in 1996.

Syracuse offensive lineman who started 11 games last season will return for 5th year (PS; $; Carlson)
Syracuse offensive tackle Mark Petry will return to the SU football team for a fifth year next season, supplying starting experience and depth on the Orange’s offensive line.
Petry started 11 games for Syracuse last year after David Wohlabaugh Jr. was injured in the second game of the season. He earned praise from quarterback Garrett Shrader for his performance in his first career start against Purdue and went on to play 758 snaps, allowing three sacks.
Petry’s return to the Orange was confirmed to Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard by Syracuse football sports information director Tyler Cady.
Petry’s return gives Syracuse three options at tackle who have started college football games for the Orange as the team heads into spring practice. In addition to Petry, Syracuse is expected to return Enrique Cruz and Wohlabaugh. Syracuse also has a verbal commitment from Da’Metrius Weatherspoon, who will transfer in from Howard.
Pro Football Focus graded Petry 31st among tackles in the ACC who played at least 200 snaps last season, with Cruz ranking 34th.

Ugh.
2024 is no doubt an exciting year for Syracuse Orange football and new head coach Fran Brown. With 31 new players and counting, the upcoming season should be a very different experience for SU fans.
There’s just one problem... the schedule isn’t finished.
Due to Army joining the AAC and discarding the bulk of their matchups, the Orange have a non-conference opening with little time and few options to fill it. But there is one path that may be overlooked - and it goes through South Bend.
Syracuse is currently set to travel to Notre Dame in 2025 as part of the independent program’s deal with the ACC. The Fighting Irish have one free game of their own to fill, but that will almost certainly be against an FCS team.

Predicting which 12 teams will make the 2025 College Football Playoff (usatoday.com; Neel)
It feels like with the end of the college football season on Monday night, following the Michigan Wolverines’ 34-13 win over the Washington Huskies in the national championship game, an era in the sport came to an end.
No longer will we have a four-team College Football Playoff, and no longer will we have five power conferences dominating the landscape. Going forward, the 12-team playoff will come into play, and thanks to conference realignment, we have seen the Power 5 widdled down to what is essentially a Power 2 — the SEC and the Big Ten — with the ACC and Big 12 working to keep pace.
It’s fair to say that the 2024 college season will be the first of a new era. How long that era will last is to be determined, but the landscape will look far different this coming season than it has before.
For the purpose of this article, we want to look at the first year of the new expanded playoff, and try to project which teams we might see involved. At the moment, the format for the playoff is a bit in question. Previously, it was set so the top-six ranked conference champions would get in as automatic qualifiers, followed by the next six highest-ranked teams. That may change, now that there are no longer five “power conferences,” and it’s going to hard to justify giving an automatic qualifying spot to the winner of the Pac-2.
To work around that for the time being, though, we went forward using the 5-and-7 model, assuming that an AQ spot would go to the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, the highest-ranked Group of 5 conference champion. From there, the remaining seven teams would be decided by the highest rankings.
With all of that being said, here are the 12 teams that I predict will make it into the inaugural expanded College Football Playoff.
SEC Champion: Georgia Bulldogs
2024 Preseason Ranking: No. 1
Analysis
I’d argue that Georgia should have been in the final 4-team playoff, so if you expand the field, and give Carson Beck another year of experience, I see almost no way that the Bulldogs aren’t a part of the first 12-team playoff next year. The SEC is going to be very good at the top next year with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma, but I think Georgia is still the team to beat.Big Ten Champion: Ohio State Buckeyes

Analysis
It will be interesting to see how good Ohio State can be with QB Will Howard, but they are so talented from top to bottom that I currently have them as the team to beat in the Big Ten, though there will be strong competition from the likes of Oregon, Michigan, Penn State, and Washington.Big 12 Champion: Arizona Wildcats

At the moment, I would put my money on a former Pac-12 team as the winner of the Big 12 next year, whether it’s Arizona or Utah. Right now, I think Arizona is my favorite, given what Noah Fifita did in his first year starting, and how good the Wildcats look going into the future. Analysis
Florida State is losing a ton, but they also added DJ Uiagalelei, who could easily lead them to an ACC title next year in a conference that isn’t as good as we’ve seen in years past. While the winners of the SEC or Big Ten may be at the top of the rankings, I see this AQ spot going to someone ranked closer to 10 than to 1....

UNC football offers ACC offensive tackle out of transfer portal (yahoo.com; Pearson)
Mack Brown and the North Carolina Tar Heels made it known what they are looking for in the transfer portal to hopefully improve the roster for next season.
They have already landed a few key players including a quarterback, tight end and even recently flipped an offensive tackle. Now, they have their eyes on another offensive tackle who is out of the ACC.
The Tar Heels offered Georgia Tech offensive tackle Jakiah Leftwich on Tuesday as he continues to look for a new program out of the transfer portal.
The 6-foot-6, 311-pound Leftwich entered the portal a few days ago and has two years of eligibility left as a graduate transfer. He’s a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and saw action in each of the last two seasons for the Yellow Jackets.
The Tar Heels are looking to revamp the offensive line as they have a quarterback battle brewing this offseason.
They lost Diego Pounds to Ole Miss and recently flipped Howard Sampson from TCU. But adding another piece shouldn’t be out of the question at all for the program.

Opportunity Awaits: Demon Deacons 2024 Schedule Set; Future Non-Conference Opponents Announced - Wake Forest University Athletics (godeacs.com)
Deacon Nation and the entire Winston-Salem and Triad Community can begin making their plans for the 2024 football season now following Wake Forest's announcement on Tuesday of its full list of opponents for this fall, including home game dates for three non-conference games.
2024 Opening Night at Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium is set for Thursday, Aug. 29 as the Demon Deacons will take on North Carolina A&T. It will mark the first meeting against the Aggies since 2004 and just the second meeting all-time. Additionally, Wake Forest will host Ole Miss on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Louisiana on Saturday, Sept. 28.
The Deacs will play their final non-conference game of the regular season at UConn on Saturday, Oct. 19.
As previously announced on Oct. 30, 2023, Wake Forest will host Clemson, Duke, Virginia and Cal-Berkeley this fall. Meanwhile, the Deacs will hit the road for ACC away games at Stanford, NC State, North Carolina and Miami.
"We are fired up to confirm an exciting seven game 2024 home schedule for Wake Forest football in Allegacy Stadium," director of athletics John Currie said. NYC-style deli on East Side will close after 2 months; pizzeria will take over (PS; Miller)
A kosher-style deli that opened shop in November and quickly drew lines of hungry customers that stretched into the parking lot will close for good on Sunday.
Goodman’s Delicatessen opened on Nov. 15 in the DeWitt shopping plaza at 4461 E. Genesee St. Huseyin Turan took over the space that was home to Peachtree Sandwich Co. before it closed after a year because the owner needed a larger space. He and business partner, Viktoriya Kononchuk, had previously owned Touch of Broadway in East Syracuse for three years before opening Goodman’s.
Like the Peachtree Sandwich Co. owner, Turan said that storefront was too small for such crowds. He said he is returning to the building that housed Touch of Broadway, located at 6812 Manlius Center Road, East Syracuse. He had sold the Touch of Broadway business last year, but it closed about six weeks ago.
He will open there on Jan. 22 as Empire Pizza & Deli, named after his first business in New Haven, Connecticut. The new business will focus on New York City-style pizza and chicken wings, but he will continue to serve his popular corned beef and pastrami sandwiches.

Friends and family made a memorial for Zy'Mier Zulueta near the rock wall where he died Nov. 30. The 15-year-old crashed a stolen car into a rock wall outside Fowler High School. Her 15-year-old son, Zy’Mier Zulueta, died Nov. 30 after he crashed a stolen car into a retaining wall near a Syracuse high school.
Zy’Mier had never been in serious trouble. So how did this high school sophomore who’d only ever driven in a parking lot end up dead, behind the wheel of a stolen car after 3 a.m.?
Desperate for answers, Jones and her family began mining her son’s Snapchat account and found he made a new friend three days before his death. That teen was a seasoned car thief – he called himself a “Kia Boy.” He introduced Zy’Mier to the terrifying world of car theft that has become enmeshed in teen culture in Syracuse and across the nation.
Teens used to steal cars here and there, but what’s happening now is like nothing anyone has seen.

Car thefts by teens have exploded, fed by security flaws in Kias and Hyundais that make them easy to steal. In 2022, 82 Kias and Hyundais were stolen in all of Onondaga County. By 2023, it was more than 900. Total car thefts in the county nearly doubled, from 991 to 1,774.
Kias and Hyundais alone are responsible for the spike in thefts. Without them, the car thefts in the county actually fell 4%.
