Welcome to National Fig Newton Day!
Up until the 19th century, many physicians believed most illnesses were related to digestion problems. As a remedy, they recommended a daily intake of biscuits and fruit. Fig rolls served as an ideal solution to their advice, which remained a locally produced handmade product.
In 1891, Philadelphia baker and fig-lover Charles Roser invented and patented the machine, which inserted fig paste into a thick pastry dough. The Cambridgeport, MA-based Kennedy Biscuit Company then purchased Roser's recipe. They began mass production after purchasing the recipe. In 1891, they produced the first Fig Newtons baked at the F.A. Kennedy Steam Bakery. The company named the pastries after the town of Newton, Massachusetts.

Class of 2024 Elizabeth (NJ) High cornerback Ibn McDaniels committed to Syracuse football recently, but it was not the normal path that many take to earning a power five opportunity. The Orange was his only offer. Before news of his visit to SU became public, he did not have profiles on the websites for the major recruiting services. He was about as far off the radar as one could get from a recruiting standpoint. Especially for a 6-3 athlete who runs a 4.4 40-yard dash.
New Jersey is a state that always has an abundance of division one talent. Therefore, it is not often that a player goes under the radar. That was the case for McDaniels, however, despite those measurables and watching how talented he appears on film. Part of that was due to only playing in 15 games and breaking his collarbone as a junior. The other part, McDaniels says, was related to academics.
"If my grades had been up to date as a freshman, and had been good, I probably would have had a lot more schools reaching out to me," McDaniels said.
After academic struggles early in his high school career, McDaniels worked extremely hard to rectify that situation and be on the path to being an NCAA qualifier.
"A lot of work," McDaniels said. "Like two years of work (in one year), really. Taking a lot of classes after school. I did summer school once. Really spending a lot of hours after school. Even after the school day was done, I was still going to work. Probably til 9:00 p.m. I was barely able to practice football because I was putting in all the work into academics so I could be a qualifier."

Syracuse football has landed a commitment from Alabama transfer defensive lineman Isaiah Hastings. Hastings was previously committed to Missouri, but reopened his recruitment after the Tigers lost its defensive coordinator and defensive line coach to LSU. He was on campus earlier this month for an official visit.. The 6-4, 290 pounder has three years of eligibility remaining and entered the portal in early December.
During his two years with the Crimson Tide, Hastings only appeared in one game. He redshirted in 2022 after appearing in only one game and did not play at all in 2023.
As a high school player, Hastings played for Clearwater Academy International in Florida. He is originally from Toronto, Canada, so Syracuse is much closer to home.
Hastings signed with the Crimson Tide as a four star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class. He was a consensus four star recruit by all four major recruiting services. Hastings was ranked as high as 53rd overall in his cycle by On3. 247Sports ranked him 139th overall while Rivals slotted him 248th. As a defensive lineman, On3 ranked him 7th best in the class while 247Sports put him 19th, Rivals 15th and ESPN 35th.

Colgate adds seven future opponents, includes game at Syracuse in 2025 (fbschedules.com)
The Colgate Raiders have released their 2024 and 2025 football schedules via their official athletics website, which includes the addition of seven non-conference contests.
Colgate is a member of the Patriot League in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Raiders will play six conference contests and six non-conference opponents in both the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
Among the new non-conference opponents added by Colgate is a contest on the road at the Syracuse Orange on Sept. 13, 2025. The two schools met last season in Syracuse with the Orange coming out on top, 65-0. The victory was the 17th straight for Syracuse over Colgate and also gave the Orange a one-game lead in the overall series, 32-31-5.
Four additional non-conference opponents for Colgate in 2025 are also new to the schedule. The Raiders will open the season at home against the Monmouth Hawks on Aug. 30 before traveling to face the Villanova Wildcats on Sept. 7. A trip to face the Cornell Big Red is slated for Sept. 20 before the Raiders return home to host the Maine Black Bears on Sept. 27.

Edwards' passion for helping others has helped him connect with SU coaches (PS; Leiker)
Driving around Atlanta and its suburbs growing up, KingJoseph Edwards always had an emotional reaction to seeing people in need out on the streets.
“He didn’t understand people not having the bare basics,” said Alicia Edwards, his mom.
Seeing how affected her son was, Alicia Edwards offered him a solution: They could pass out plates of food to people they saw who needed it. They started in small, manageable numbers, but quickly, Edwards wanted to do more.
“It’s not enough food,” Alicia Edwards recalled her son telling her. “We’re not doing enough.”
Edwards’ nonprofit, Helping Hand & More, is now in its 10th year and expanding its reach beyond Atlanta as Edwards begins his Syracuse football career.
Edwards and his mom coordinated with several local organizations for the “We are the Dream MLK Celebration” he hosted Saturday afternoon hours after he moved in to his SU housing and before he even participates in his first team workout Monday.
BluePrint 15, a local nonprofit aimed at revitalizing Syracuse’s old 15th ward, assisted the Edwards in putting on the event. STEAM at Dr. King Elementary School offered its cafeteria as the venue.
The community engagement event, which had a corresponding toiletry drive for people in need, had the feel of a family gathering despite Edwards being new to the area.
“I really like the love that they’re giving me out here,” Edwards said. “It means a lot to me.”
Syracuse head coach Fran Brown and defensive coordinator Elijah Robinson both attended to support Edwards and connect with their new community themselves.
Brown shook hands with volunteers at every one of the community organization booths set up during the event. He spoke with community members and colored with their kids.

'Invisible No More' highlights Wilmeth Sidat-Singh's lasting impact at SU (DO; Tseng)
Scott Pitoniak and Rick Burton met in 2008, when Pitoniak was speaking at Syracuse about his book “Memories of Yankee Stadium.” Burton — a professor at SU’s Falk College — brought his entire honors class to listen to Pitoniak. After the event, the two instantly hit it off, connecting over their love of all things Syracuse.
More than five years later, Pitoniak found out about Wilmeth Sidat-Singh, the first Black football player at Syracuse. He reached out to Burton and realized how little coverage there was of him, despite his historic feats. That was when the two decided to write a book about Sidat-Singh’s accomplishments.
Sidat-Singh was a Syracuse quarterback and basketball player in the 1930s, more than 10 years before famous Black pioneers of sports integrated the game. Now, 90 years after Sidat-Singh attended SU, Pitoniak and Burton retold his story through their new historical fiction book “Invisible No More,” which was published on Dec. 5, 2023. The story details the trouble Sidat-Singh dealt with as a Black athlete, including not being allowed to play in multiple games in certain states.
Despite being the first Black football player ever at Syracuse, he’s relatively unknown to the public. Pitoniak and Burton are looking to bring awareness to the historical athlete through their book, providing insight to who they both call “the greatest athlete you’ve never heard of.”
Syracuse is known for Black football players who helped break barriers like Ernie Davis and Jim Brown. But Sidat-Singh came before them and dealt with challenges due to his race.
While on the team, he was not allowed to play in a game against Maryland due to a law forbidding Black players from dressing in games between Northern and Southern teams.
“He was not allowed to play when Syracuse went south of the Mason Dixon Line to play the University of Maryland. Black players were not allowed to play due to the ‘gentleman’s agreement,’” Pitoniak said.

Syracuse football DE Jalil Smith says he is withdrawing name from transfer portal (PS; $; Carlson)
Syracuse defensive end Jalil Smith, who redshirted his true freshman season with the Orange last year, said he is withdrawing his name from the transfer portal.
Smith announced his intention on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter. Players who enter their name into the transfer portal can return to their previous school as long as there is mutual agreement between the two.
A spokesman for the football program could not be reached immediately for comment.
Smith was ranked by 247 Sports as the No. 1,693 player in the Class of 2023. He played in one game last season for the Orange and did not record a counting stat. He was listed on Syracuse’s roster at 6-foot-5 and 266 pounds.
Smith played high school football at Brooklyn’s Abraham Lincoln High School. He was one of four recruits from New York in Dino Babers’ final class and the 11th-ranked prospect in the state.
Smith was one of 20 players on Syracuse’s 2023 roster who entered their name into the transfer portal with most of them coming after the coaching change from Babers to new coach Fran Brown. Smith is the first to withdraw their name.

Former Syracuse WR Isaiah Jones will transfer, reunite with former Orange coach (PS; $; Carlson)
Former Syracuse wide receiver Isaiah Jones, who showed flashes of promise with the Orange but battled multiple injuries, will transfer to New Mexico and reunite with former offensive coordinator Jason Beck.
Jones announced his transfer destination on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter.
Jones caught eight passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns during Syracuse’s first two games this season but was injured in Week 3. He played in 27 career games for Syracuse, catching 13 passes for 266 yards.
Syracuse provided little information on Jones’ injury during the year but his limitations appeared to reduce his use in the passing game. Combined with an injury to Oronde Gadsden II, the absence of SU’s two top pass-catching options hampered the Orange passing game for much of the season.
Jones played just three games in 2022 before suffering a season-ending injury. He was listed by Syracuse at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds.

Another Syracuse transfer finds new home as LB commits to LA Tech (PS; Leiker)
Former Syracuse football linebacker Mekhi Mason is transferring to Louisiana Tech, he announced via social media Monday.
Mason spent two seasons with the Orange and has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
After appearing in seven games mostly on special teams in 2022, Mason played just one game his sophomore season. He played 50 total snaps across both seasons, according to Pro Football Focus.
The Florida native had been a three star out of high school per the 247Sports Composite. He was not rated in the transfer portal.
Louisiana Tech, which competes in Conference USA, finished 3-9 last season.
Syracuse has lost 20 players to the portal this offseason. Eleven have now found new homes with Mason’s commitment to LA Tech.

Syracuse set to complete football staff, hire Troy’s James Vollono as special teams coach (report) (PS; $; Carlson)
Syracuse will hire Troy analyst James Vollono as its special teams coach for next season, according to a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Thamel cited anonymous sources.
The hiring of Vollono completes Syracuse coach Fran Brown’s first coaching staff with the Orange. He replaces Bob Ligashesky, who moved to the University of Minnesota this offseason.
Thamel noted that Vollono has strong recruiting ties in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area, where Syracuse would like to recruit heavily. He attended Catholic and has spent time coaching Navy, Towson, Georgetown and Annapolis High School.
He has also spent time on coaching staffs at Georgia, North Carolina and Mississippi State.
Most recently he spent two years as a special teams analyst for Troy, a team that did not have an on-field special teams coach last year. Before that Vollono spent a year in the Canadian Football League and three seasons coaching at Florida International.

Miami football: How Cameron Ward addition puts Hurricanes among 2024 ACC favorites (247sports.com; Flaherty)
Miami landed an elite transfer quarterback when Washington State’s Cameron Ward announced that he would set aside the NFL to transfer to the Hurricanes for the 2024 season. And Cover 3 Podcast Bud Elliott argues that Ward pushes Miami into ACC title contending territory.
“And I think it’s a great get for Miami. Miami has a pretty good chance to be favored in the ACC next year,” Elliott said. “Because Ward was, basically every school I know thought he was the top guy in the portal for quarterbacks. So that’s a big get for them. This is a pretty big deal for them. They could absolutely win the league. They should have gone 8-4 last year if they can take a knee. Like is it crazy to think they can go from (an) 8-4-level team to a 10-2, 11-1? I think it’s very possible. And the schedule’s a cakewalk. Have you seen it?”
The No. 3 transfer quarterback and No. 10 overall player in the portal, Ward started his career at Incarnate Word before transferring to Washington State. With the Cougars, Ward completed 65.5% of his passes, throwing for almost 7,000 yards and 48 touchdowns to 16 interceptions over his two seasons. This year, Ward passed for 3,736 yards and 25 touchdowns with seven picks in 12 games.

On January 30th, 2023, Virginia football announced the promotion of Adam Mims to the position of wide receivers coach. At the time, most of the discussions around this staffing move centered around the big shoes Mims had to fill as he was replacing the fan-favorite and much-beloved Marques Hagans, who left after 12 years on the UVA coaching staff. Mims also faced the significant challenge of replacing the production of receivers like Dontayvion Wicks and Keytaon Thompson.
Less than a year later, the decision to promote Mims seems to be one of the most underrated moves of Tony Elliott's time so far at Virginia. In his first season serving as wide receivers coach, Mims had a big hand in perhaps the greatest season by a Cavalier wide receiver in UVA football history.
Malik Washington arrived at Virginia for his final year of eligibility having never once posted a 100-yard receiving game in his four years at Northwestern. In his one season as a Cavalier, Washington went over 100 yards receiving in 10 of UVA's 12 games. He shattered Virginia's single-season receiving records with 1,426 receiving yards and 110 receptions, which also broke the ACC's all-time single-season receptions record and led the entire country in that category in the regular season. Washington deservedly earned First-Team All-ACC and was selected as an All-American by 13 different publications. While Washington's own talent and work ethic deserves the lion's share of the credit for his legendary individual season, Adam Mims also merits some serious recognition for his coaching of Washington.

What are the top 10 destinations people fly to from Syracuse airport? (PS; Tampone)
More than 136,000 people flew to Atlanta from Syracuse between October 2022 and September 2023, making it the most common destination for people flying from Syracuse in that time span, according to a recent list from Stacker.
Ten percent of all passengers flying from Syracuse Hancock International Airport were traveling to Atlanta, Stacker said.
Stacker compiled the list using data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Destinations were ranked by total passengers who flew to each location from Syracuse.
After Atlanta, Chicago ranked second and Charlotte, North Carolina was third.
The list doesn’t reflect passengers’ ultimate destination, just the most common domestic flights originating from Hancock. In America’s hub system of flying, most Syracuse passengers have connections before reaching their final stops.
Atlanta is the nation’s busiest airport and is the primary hub for Delta Airlines.
