Syracuse coach Scott Shafer highlights freshmen standing out early in training camp (video; PS; Mink)

Wanting to find a way to utilize Corey Winfield's athleticism sooner, Syracuse coach Scott Shafer has moved the redshirt freshman to cornerback.
Shafer explained the position change following Wednesday's practice, the first session of camp in which the team wore full pads. He said Winfield is "too good of an athlete to be a backup or a backup to a backup," and his athleticism and vertical jump of around 40 inches bodes well for his long-term success there.
"I think there will be a day when Corey Winfield is a very good corner," Shafer said.
Winfield expressed a brief moment of disappointment when he learned of the move. Shafer said he "dropped his chin for five or 10 minutes, picked up the phone" and talked to his family before practicing with the defensive backs.
There will be a natural transition period for Winfield, but safety Durell Eskridge — who was sold on Shafer's plan to play safety in college instead of wide receiver — said facing corners and understanding how they move should help with the change.
"He can jump," Eskridge said. "He comes from the green jersey side where they kind of run from contact. We're just bringing him over, introducing him to contact, and once he gets that down pat he's going to be a very good player."

Syracuse cornerback Joey Nassib separated his right shoulder earlier this week and will undergo an MRI to further determine his treatment, SU head coach Scott Shafer said on Wednesday.
The senior cornerback had the arm in a sling during the open portion of practice Wednesday afternoon.
"Joe's been a valuable teammate for a long time," Shafer said. "I'm extremely close to him. It's disappointing, but he's a tough little cowboy, and when they tell him when to get back, he'll be back three days before that."

Now comes the back end of the home-and-home, and it features a very different version of the Tigers.
Tajh Boyd is gone, and so is Sammy Watkins. Ditto effective tailback Roderick McDowell and No. 2 wideout Martavis Bryant. Georgia, with star tailback Todd Gurley, should be favored, but it wouldn't be a titanic upset if Clemson snagged another victory over the Bulldogs. At the least, it's one of the opening weekend's most fascinating games, regardless of which conferences are involved.

Between current competitors redshirt freshman Mitch Kimble, who entered camp with a slight lead, classmate Austin Wilson and true freshman AJ Long — freshman Alin Edouard is expected to join once he returns from a family/personal obligation — no one has stepped up yet.
"It's been up and down," Lester said. "The first two days I was really disappointed with all three of them. I didn't think any one of them really took a lead. I was really hoping someone would come out of the blocks. None of them did.
