Syracuse Gets Verbal From Another Top NJ Recruit in Daivon Ellison of Don Bosco HS (PS; Bailey)

Don Bosco (Ramsey, N.J.) Preparatory High School cornerback Daivon Ellison verbally committed to Syracuse on Monday, he announced on Twitter.
Ellison, who visited SU earlier this summer, becomes the 25th member of Syracuse's Class of 2015, including 2014 holdovers Treevon Prater and Lamar Dawson. He is the fourth cornerback in the class, joining Dawson, Gerald Robinson and Andrew Spence. He is also the third New Jersey product, joining running back Dontae Strickland and safety Daiquan Kelly.
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Ellison chose the Orange over offers from Rutgers, Boston College and Old Dominion, according to At their request, this network is being blocked from this site..

Daivon Ellison, Member of NJ.com Top 50, Commits to Syracuse (nj.com; Hunt)

...
"I just love everything about Cuse," Ellison told NJ.com following his announcement. "I grew up a Cuse fan for basketball and now I have the opportunity to go to Syracuse to play football on scholarship. It's just crazy and it's a blessing."
...

...
NJ.com caught up with Don Bosco legendary head coach Greg Toal in May where he explained what Ellison has meant to his program over the past couple years.
"Daivon is a heck of an athlete,” said Toal. “He's a tremendous hitter. He's a tough, hard-nosed tackler. It's amazing for a guy that's not that big, the impact he has when he hits people. It's pretty amazing. And he's made a lot of plays.
“Obviously, we used him late in the (2013) season a lot on offense. And he had an outstanding three-or-four games at the end of the season. We were a much better team with him on offense. He made a few big runs and made a lot of plays for us offensively and defensively. In order for us to be good, I think we definitely have to keep him healthy and get him on offense and defense."

Villanova News and Depth Chart (vuhoops.com; Lane)

Villanova has released their two-deep depth chart prior to Friday night's trip to face the Syracuse Orange, and there should be plenty to talk about in advance of the 7:30pm ET kickoff. Here's the depth chart via a release from the Athletic Department.

...
Only a few surprises on the offensive side of the ball to call out. First, Mike Burke and Anthony DeCamillo ook to be in a dead heat entering the season. Burke, a notoriously good run-blocker, might give way to DeCamillo on obvious passing downs at the outset.Clay Hornenot being able to win a starting job is a bit of a surprise, although not so much when you see that he's competing withKevin Gulyas.
On the offensive line, we expected Nico D'Angelo to beat out Peter Sotiriou based on his Most Improved Player performance during spring practice, but Sotiriou boasts game experience that should bear more immediate dividends for the offense.

Villanova Coach Not Thrilled Opening with Syracuse (PS; Stevens)

Villanova coach Andy Talley is concerned about leaving his season opener at Syracuse with a spate of injuries.
Trouble is, the Wildcats are going into Friday's game at the Carrier Dome with an ailing offensive line.
Projected left tackle Brad Seaton has yet to be on the field with the Wildcats, and guard Nico D'Angelo has a high ankle sprain and, according to Talley, "doesn't look like he's going to make it to the game."
Things haven't gone smoothly during practice for the Villanova offense, and Talley understands that could spell trouble against Syracuse's assertive defense.

A Look at Long Snapping Captain Sam Rodgers (DO; Dougherty)

Sam Rodgers could hike a football in his sleep. Sometimes, when a make-believe game sneaks into a dream, he actually does.

Standing in the middle of Syracuse’s Iocolano-Petty Football Wing, Rodgers closed his eyes and put his hands at his sides —acting as if he was in his bed. Then he jolted his body forward and threw his hands between his legs, his head toward his waistline and spread his legs apart.

Whoever was on the receiving end had just received a perfect snap.

“I’ve just been here doing this so long,”said Rodgers, the Orange’s starting senior long-snapper. “It’s like you do something enough, over and over, and you really start to live it and think about it all the time.”

Rodgers, a four-year starter, was named a team captain alongside running back Prince-Tyson Gulley, offensive tackle Sean Hickey and linebacker Cameron Lynch toward the end of training camp. Gulley has been a primary piece of the Orange’s backfield for three seasons, Lynch is considered one of the conference’s best linebackers and Hickey and “NFL”have often shared sentences.

What is Scott Shafer Most Looking Forward to in the Season Opener vs Villanova? (PS; Mink)

Syracuse coach Scott Shafer's Twitter feed has simply been a countdown since Friday: one tweet per day, one number signifying the number of days until Friday's season opener against Villanova.
Football is right around the corner in Central New York, and Shafer is more than ready to put his team on the field for the first time since a 21-17 victory against Minnesota in the Texas Bowl way back in December.
The second-year coach joined Orange play-by-play man Matt Park on Cuse.com Monday for their usual weekly preview, and Shafer highlighted a few points worth mentioning.

1. Experience is a good thing
Thirteen of 22 starters listed on the two-deep depth chart released earlier today are players with senior eligibility. And eight more contributed in varying degrees last season.
Shafer said that experience is "gonna go a long way" in Friday's opener against Nova.

Observations on Depth Chart for Week 1 (PS; Mink)

Game week is upon us, and Syracuse released its depth chart for Friday night's season opener against Villanova (7:30 p.m., ESPN3).
There were no major surprises, and
Monday's depth chart is mostly a two-deep for the offense, defense and specialists.
Perhaps most noteworthy is that there are six true freshmen on the two-deep for the offense and defense. To put that in perspective, three freshmen (Brisly Estime, Marqez Hodge and Isaiah Johnson)
cracked the two-deepheading into last year's opener against Penn State, and all three contributed.
Who are the six this year?
Quarterback A.J. Long is listed a co-backup with redshirt freshman Austin Wilson.
Wide receiver Steve Ishmael is right behind Jarrod West at the outside receiver position, along with redshirt junior Quinta Funderburk.

Tennessee Tians CB Ri'Shard Anderson is SU's Last Undrafted Free Agent Still on an NFL Roster (PS; Bailey)

As NFL teams work to trim their rosters down to 75 players by Tuesday and 53 by Saturday, former Syracuse running back Jerome Smith and center Macky MacPherson have already been cut.
That leaves Tennessee Titans cornerback RI'Shard Anderson as the Orange's lone undrafted free agent left on a roster — and it appears he's survived the first wave. Tennessee cut corners Marc Anthony and Micah Pellerin earlier on Monday,
according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean.
Anderson said the training camp atmosphere reminds him of his first year at Syracuse.
"It's just like college was," Anderson said in a phone interview on Monday. "You've got to wait to move up before you become anybody. You've got to go from being a senior, leader of a team to just hanging back, being quiet, you can't say much."

Ernie Davis and JFK: More Than 50 Years Ago, Key Figures in Another DC Football Time of Change (PS; Kirst)

The image, from the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, remains a haunting symbol of lost youth and vitality: President John F. Kennedy, in December of 1961, clasps hands with Ernie Davis, a Syracuse University football great and the first African-American to ever win football's Heisman Trophy.
Both men were perceived as engines of American hope and vigor. Both, in a manner beyond imagination to those who watched them shake hands, would be gone within two years: Davis would die of leukemia, while Kennedy would be shot to death in Dallas.

Dan Johnson and His Statue of Ernie Davis

Orangeyes Open Set for Saturday (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

The passing of SU superfan Dan Johnson in July brought sadness to the entire community, especially those who rooted for the Orange.
Now, there's a way to honor him.
This Saturday, it's the "Orangeyes Open" at Foxfire Golf Course in Baldwinsville. It's a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. with all proceeds going to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of CNY and WNY.
"Orangeyes" of course was his beloved username at Syracusefan.com
