Hard to Get a Solid Early Grasp on 2015 Syracuse Football (sujuiceonline.com; Bierman)

Item: With so much coverage in March focusing on the milestone NCAA sanctions, an hour long Jim Boeheim press conference, and the ongoing, detailed process of hiring a new athletic director, Scott Shafer was able to complete his spring practice allotment practically under the radar, despite the fact that he was afforded the luxury of spacing out practices with the much-welcomed prescience of the new Ensley Athletic Center.

Much has been made of the fast start this week’s No. 2 ranked Syracuse lacrosse team got off to in February, aided not only by having immense talent everywhere on the field and four straight home games out of the gate, but also by the fact that pre-season January practices were held inside the full field confines of the new indoor practice building, something John Desko and past teams did not have the benefit of either in the Dome during basketball season, or the smaller field space of Manley Field House.

Simply being able to practice at full throttle on game field dimensions in the middle of the winter and during the season when the weather outside doesn’t cooperate, can’t be overlooked.

A related benefit was afforded to Shafer, embarking on his third season and trying to get the program back to a bowl game, by being able to take the 14 practices and conduct them over a six week period starting in an unheard-of-in-central-New York late February, with a 12 day break included, before ending with the “some style but no substance” scrimmage in the Dome this past weekend.

Syracuse, LSU's Opponent September 26th, Concludes Spring Practice (nola.com; Higgins)

Syracuse, LSU's 2015 football top non-conference opponent in a game set Sept. 26 in the Tigers' first-game ever in the Carrier Dome, concluded spring practice Saturday with a final scrimmage.

Third-year Orangemen coach Scott Shafer said he wouldn't reveal much to opponents, and he stayed true to his word.

The offense looked as vanilla as last season's group that averaged just more than 17 points per game last season. Syracuse quarterbacks combined to complete 21-of-48 passes and its rushing attack ran for 71 yards on 36 carries, fewer than 2 yards per attempt.

'"We didn't want anything to come out on video tape or on television to be honest with you," Shafer said. "My biggest goal was to get through it injury-free and I think we did for the most part. I saw some good things out there. We tried to keep things real vanilla on offense, we have a lot of things that we didn't want to use. We only ran three (types of) run plays."

Syracuse was 3-9 last season.

NY Giants Reportedly High on SU Safety Durell Eskridge (bigbluereview.com; Valentine)

The New York Giants have treated Syracuse University like somewhat of a farm team in recent years. Jay Bromley, Ryan Nassib, Justin Pugh and Jameel McClain are all former Syracuse stars. Who will be the next Orange player to land with Big Blue? Could it be safety Durell Eskridge?

Syracuse held its pro day on Monday, and Eskridge was one of 18 players who worked out for scouts. According to a report from Syracuse.com, Giants safeties coach Dave Merritt told a member of the Syracuse coaching staff that the team is "high" on Eskridge, who is a safety. Draft analysts consider Eskridge a likely mid-round pick.

SU strength and conditioning coach Will Hicks told SU.com that Eskridge is "long and his best football is in front of him."

Sean Keeley, editor of SB Nation's Syracuse web site, Troy Nunes is an Absolute Magician, had this to say about Eskridge:

"Syracuse's secondary has been a sore spot for years but it's managed to churn out a few decent pro prospects, namely Shamarko Thomas and Tanard Jackson. Eskridge has probably been the most dependable player back there for the Orange in the last two seasons, racking up 78 tackles and 68 tackles, respectively. There's some concern that he left too early and could have benefitted from another season. That's probably true. Then again, he's got the talent to take a flier on in later rounds. If anything, his stock was hurt just because some other quality DBs came out early as well."
