Boise Football Beat Writer Offers Insights on New SU AD Mark Coyle (PS; Axe)
Presser to Introduce New SU AD at 10 AM Today
Mark Coyle will take to the podium at 10:00 a.m. Monday at a press conference in the Iocolano-Petty Football Wing at Syracuse University to give his first address as the new athletic director at SU.
To get an idea of what Coyle accomplished at his last stop, Boise State, and what kind of approach Syracuse fans can expect from him, I connected with Dave Southorn from The Idaho Statesman.
Southorn has covered Boise State sports since 2004, including Coyle's entire tenure at the school as athletic director since 2011.
His responses are below.
What kind of athletic director is Syracuse getting in Mark Coyle?
Mark is the sort of guy who won't be front and center, always in front of a camera, but he's the sort who gets things done. He's a very personable guy toward fans, donors, and even media (he came by press row every basketball game to say hi to everyone). That no doubt helps with his reputation as a strong fund-raiser. He's hands-off with the teams, simply wanting to serve as the sort who can give them what they want and not meddle.
What would you consider to be Coyle's greatest accomplishment at Boise State?
I think in a long-term sense, his ability to continue to grow the football and basketball programs stand out. Football has added home-and-homes (no easy task in Boise) with Florida State, Oklahoma State, Virginia and Cincinnati, among a few others. He's made sure the $30 million football facility (approved just before he started) has been a focal point of the program for donors, recruits, visitors, you name it.

Recruiting is the life blood of any major college sports program. The best coach in the world isn’t going to win anything without at least a modicum of talent. It’s amusing actually. Winning at the highest level in college rests with the ability of grown men to convince 17-year old kids to spend the next four to five years of their life donning a particular jersey. Many of these coaches are millionaires based simply on the power of persuasion. Their job security depends on it. Now, that’s not to say that any dope can simply roll the ball out onto the court of five McDonald’s All-Americans, sit back and wait five months for the playing of One Shining Moment. The same can be said for football too. Nick Saban and Urban Meyer aren’t simply great salesmen.
This brings us to Scott Shafer. To win in the ACC, Syracuse needs to continue upgrading its talent. Shafer scored his biggest recruiting win as a coach back in April with the commitment of RB Robert Washington out of North Carolina. Factories such as Alabama, Florida, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and Southern Cal all wanted Washington taking hand-offs in their backfields. The hope is Washington’s commitment would trigger the ability for SU to snag verbals from the type of prospects who wouldn’t have given SU a thought in the past. And securing commitments from other quality players would certainly go a long way to securing Washington’s arrival on campus as he plans to enroll early to be able to take part in 2016 Spring ball.
