CHICKEN WING HISTORY
Buffalo, New York lays claim to the birthplace of the chicken wing and that’s why they are often called Buffalo wings as well. The story goes that Teressa Bellissimo created chicken wings at the Anchor Bar, which she owned with her husband Frank, when her son Dominic and some of his college friends decided they wanted a late night bite to eat. She wanted a fast and easy dish so she deep-fried some chicken wings, which in 1964 were usually reserved for soup stock. She tossed them in butter and hot sauce. Naturally, they were an instant hit. The Bellissimos weren’t the first Buffalo restaurateurs to realize the potential of chicken wings. John Young had opened Wings’n Things on Jefferson Avenue in 1963. But his wings were breaded and dressed in a tomato-based sauce.
The Anchor Bar’s chicken wing recipe turned out to be irresistible to customers and competitors. Other restaurants in town started catching on. Duff’s, in Amherst, started selling them in 1969. A few years later, the City of Buffalo declared July 29 Chicken Wing Day and in its proclamation proudly noted that “thousands of pounds of chicken wings are consumed by Buffalonians in restaurants and taverns throughout the city each week.”

SU Target 4 Star LB Tyshon Fogg to Visit Rutgers Wednesday (nj.com; Hunt)
Calvert Hall (Towson, Md.) linebacker Tyshon Fogg, a four-star recruit, will visit Rutgers Wednesday.
Maryland's top junior linebacker, with a rare combination of size and speed, Fogg earned an offer from Rutgers following a standout performance at the 2015 Rutgers 7-on-7 Passing Camp.
A 6-2, 215-pounder, Fogg also holds offers from Maryland, Stanford, Clemson, Michigan State, Syracuse and others, with Maryland perceived to hold an early lead.
Coming off a visit to College Park, Fogg will join Lucas Niang, a 6-6, 295-pound class of 2016 offensive tackle, also set to visit campus, Wednesday.
Niang was offered by Rutgers in January when tight ends coach Phil Galiano visited his school.
Despite Fogg going into his junior year, he hopes to soon make his collegiate decision.
He's the No. 10 outside linebacker and No. 190 player overall in the 2017 class, according to the 247Sports.com composite.

FIVE BATTLING FOR QUARTERBACK JOB: It isn’t particularly newsworthy for a college football team to have a quarterback battle in the offseason. Several of the teams that SU will play this year (LSU and FSU, to name two) had quarterback battles going into spring practice. But Louisville’s may be the most unique in the country because head coach Bobby Petrino is allowing all five of his scholarship quarterbacks to compete for the starting position. There can never be “too much competition” at the signal caller position, Petrino said during ACC kickoff earlier in July. That means when practice resumes, true freshman Lamar Jackson, sophomores Reggie Bonnafon and Kyle Bolin, and juniors Will Gardner and Tyler Ferguson will all be competing for the job. Petrino did mention that he will settle in on a starter two weeks before the season opener.

WHO TO WATCH FOR: Louisville has lost its top three receivers from 2014, but returns junior James Quick. When Quick arrived on campus in 2013, he was one of the most highly touted receivers in the country, and will have an opportunity to build off the 566 yards and three touchdowns from last year. On defense, defensive end Sheldon Rankins returns for his senior season. He was a third-team All-ACC performer last year after finishing with 53 tackles and team-highs with 8.0 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss.
PREDICTION: The Cardinals held Syracuse to just 245 yards and six points last season, and finished with the 24th best defense in the nation at 21.8 points allowed per game. Though seven starters are gone from that unit, Petrino returns an experienced linebacker core and defensive front. LOUISVILLE 28, SYRACUSE 10.

Former SU Star Rich Panczyszyn Dies (shorenewstoday.com; Williams)

Ppeaking of great athletes, Rich Panczyszyn from Millville also died recently. He was a successful football and basketball player at Millville who went on to play college football at Syracuse. His college career, as a quarterback and a punter, was limited by injuries.
But Panczyszyn wore number 44, a uniform that Syracuse gave to special people. Among those who wore 44 at Syracuse were Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Michael Owens and Rob Konrad. Panczyszyn ran for 88 yards in his first game at Syracuse, the most yards ever by a player wearing number 44 in his first game. The number has since been retired.
When Panczyszyn was inducted into Millville’s Sports Hall of Fame he was introduced by the late Jack Boyd, his basketball coach at Millville.

Dan Mullen's Radical Idea for College Football (al.com; Talty)
Dan Mullen has an idea that could radically change college football.
The concept is fairly simple: Any player above the NCAA's new core grade-point-average requirement should get five years of eligibility instead of the standard four.
Sound crazy? Let the Mississippi State coach explain.
"You might take a freshman and they are being punished for having better grades. They might be forced to play even though they needed a redshirt year," Mullen says. "One of the thoughts I had was there's a mandatory academic redshirt year for a certain group of people...well, if you are above that new standard you should get five years of eligibility. Why punish someone who might be forced to have to play?
"Instead of punishing guys for doing bad, why not reward guys for doing good?"
Mullen readily admits that his idea has never gotten traction at any SEC or coaches meeting. He's a man on an island on this one.
His idea is to counteract the NCAA's requirement, set to go into effect August 2016, which requires prospective student-athletes to have a minimum GPA of 2.3. If the recruits can't hit that 2.3 GPA figure but are above the old 2.0 scale, they'd be forced to take an academic redshirt year. The NCAA also raised its sliding scale based on GPA and SAT/ACT scores, and now requires recruits to have completed 10 of their 16 core classes before their senior year.

"The most difficult thing is if a kid is close," says Syracuse coach Scott Shafer. "You have to be careful how many of those kids you put on the board. For the most part if you are signing a class of 25 kids, you don't want to have more than three kids, or it can bite you."
Shafer has experience handling difficult academic standards. Not only does he face it at Syracuse but he did it as a defensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford, one of the nation's top academic institutions. Harbaugh required his staff always to have academics in mind when considering which players to recruit. The staff blanketed the country looking for the right fit for Stanford.
"We tried to find any all-conference player who was a sophomore around the country and as soon as he was all-county or whatever in his hometown, we shot a transcript request to his counselors," Shafer says. "There were literally thousands of them. Our whole thing was get his transcripts before we watch his video. If the transcript came in and that kid had honor classes and (advanced placement) classes and a very high GPA, then we'd watch the video."

First Concert at Onondaga Lake Amphitheatre to be Announced Today (PS; Baker)
Tomorrow morning, officials will name the first artist to perform at the new amphitheater on Onondaga Lake.
The NYS Fair will host a press conference Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. to announce the act, according to a press release from Onondaga County.
The press release said County Executive Joanie Mahoney will make a "major announcement."
The concert will take place during the 12-day run of the NYS Fair, County Executive Joanie Mahoney has said. The Fair begins on Thursday, Aug. 27.
Construction crews began building the $50 million amphitheater in March. Progress has been swift and the facility is expected to be completed by Aug. 24.
Earlier this month, a source told Syracuse.com an offer had been made on Zac Brown Band at the amphitheater. A county official said Zac Brown Band would not be the opening act. Gov. Cuomo said 11 days ago that no act had been booked.
As of Wednesday, there will be 29 days remaining until opening day at the Fair.
