True Frosh Kenterius Womack Could See Field at WR This Season (PS; Bailey)
Watching Kenterius Womack work out during the first couple weeks of camp, Syracuse offensive coordinator Tim Lester came away with two conclusions:
1. Womack isn't ready to play quarterback at this level, yet.
2. He is athletic enough to be a contributor this season if he can develop at wide receiver.
As the Orange finishes up its preseason camp and moves into game preparation for its season opener against Rhode Island, Womack continues to spend time practicing at quarterback and wide receiver. Lester hasn't ruled out the 6-foot-1, 170-pound athlete from running SU's offense in future years, but he's seen enough to instruct the first-year player to train primarily at wideout.
Womack initially had trouble getting off the line of scrimmage, but he's improved his physicality, thanks in part to working with sophomore wide receiver Steve Ishmael. Releases were Ishmael's main struggle during his first few months of college ball last year.
"You've seen that growth as we cut down quarterback stuff," Lester said. "That's really why we did it, to make sure he's ready to go this year. He is talented, and now that he can get off the ball, he can make plays."
Womack flashed his shiftiness very briefly during the Fort Drum scrimmage, coming around on a reverse and spinning away from freshman defensive end Qaadir Sheppard. He didn't make it back to the line of scrimmage but appears to be a fairly natural athlete in a wide receivers group that's largely unproven after Ishmael.
"I know once he gets the ball, that's not a problem," Lester said.
It's likely that Womack won't be making any contributions right away this year, but as he continues to master the playbook and thinks less during practice, he could rise up the depth chart.

Rhode Island Rams: At home against an FCS squad for the second straight opener, the Orange have learned their lesson from last year. They won't be looking past the Rams. Despite a new offensive attack, SU looks surprisingly in-sync, jumping out to a 27-0 lead in the first half and never looking back. URI's able to get on the board late, but it's far from enough as SU rolls by a final score of 40-7. John enjoys watching the game a second time, even if inconveniently from a laptop. W (1-0, 0-0)
Wake Forest Demon Deacons: After a Syracuse team with its backup QB beat Wake Forest by 23 in 2014, why would this year be any different, especially when the Deacs lost their two best players to the NFL Draft? The Deacons are still plenty tough on defense, but the offense continues to struggle amid a constant blitz from the Orange. They're in the game for a half, but Syracuse still pulls away by the fourth quarter to secure a 24-10 victory, featuring (encouragingly) a lot of mistake-free play. W (2-0, 1-0)
Central Michigan Chippewas: The Orange, with a head of steam building, start to look past CMU a bit. But not enough to put the outcome of this one in any real doubt. With SU's foot off the gas in the second half, the Chippewas tack on a few points. But the defense helps close out the team's third straight victory, a 30-10 triumph that could've been a whole lot more lopsided (something Scott Shafer takes the team to task on after the game). W (3-0, 1-0)
LSU Tigers: Dammit. Some of the previous week's lapses carry over... against a ranked LSU squad that won't let the Orange get away with it at all. Syracuse stays within a touchdown a little past halftime, but that's when the Tigers' secondary takes over and picks off Hunt three times in the final 30 minutes. It's a tough pill to swallow for this 'Cuse squad that was gaining confidence earlier in the season. But LSU was the better team and it showed in the final score, a 33-13 loss that featured four Orange turnovers. John sobs on the second watch, begging to go back to better times. L (3-1, 1-0)

Andrea Adelson Thinks SU Football Faces Tough Road to a Bowl Game (thejuice; podcast; Cheng)
ESPN.com’s Andrea Adelson calls in to chat about the upcoming football season with Wesley Cheng on the Juice on the Cuse podcast hosted by SNY.tv. Senior Columnist Jim Stechschulte calls in after to preview the Syracuse football team.
Here are the highlights from the show:
Wes Cheng: I wanted to get your take on Syracuse. Best case scenario, Syracuse makes a bowl game. Worst case, they end up with a season like 2014. Where do you fall in this spectrum, and what needs to go right for Syracuse this year to be successful?
Andrea Adelson: I’ve been going back and forth on Syracuse as I look at the schedule. There was a national reporter who said it sets up well for Syracuse to start off potentially 5-1, 6-1 when you look at the beginning part of the schedule. But there is just so much youth on this team on defense. And the fact that they’ve had several key starters on the defense line not being able to participate this preseason has left me scratching my head a little bit about what we’re going to see out of Syracuse in the early going on defense.
Especially because this team has relied on that defense so much over these last several seasons, and even though there was all those injuries on the offense last season, the defense played pretty well and held its own. It’s just that they couldn’t score because they were down to their fourth string quarterback. I think the offense will be improved. I like what I’ve heard out of Terrel Hunt. I like what I’ve heard out of the coaches in that they’re going to be a lot more multiple, in the words of Scott Shafer this season, but based on those questions on defense, I think if Syracuse can go 5-7, that’s going to be a vast improvement over a year ago. I think going to a bowl game at this point given what’s on the back half of the schedule and also all of those questions on defense is going to be really hard.

Devan Carter Continues to Have Career Ruined at Rutgers (nj.com; Sargeant)
On the eve of Rutgers' final preseason scrimmage last Saturday, Devan Carter was called into Kyle Flood's office. The Rutgers coach pointed to the depth issues his team was having at running back, and asked Carter if he wanted to move back to offense after transitioning to linebacker.
"One of the more unselfish acts we've had on our football team,'' Flood said. "We had depth issues at running back, we needed him to go back to running back. He's been playing linebacker. I know Devan would like his role on game day to be bigger, but he's such a quality person and such a team-first person, he made the switch in a second, and was a very valuable guy.''
Flood lauded Carter's act to both the players and media afterwards, and Carter was honored by the shout out.
"I was so grateful for that,'' the 6-2, 210-pound redshirt sophomore said. "It was nice to be appreciated when I work hard.''
With three of the team's featured running backs either sidelined or nursing injuries, Carter rushed for 39 yards on 14 carries, including a first down in a four-minute situation that allowed the Rutgers offense to run out the clock.
"I always liked playing running back,'' said Carter, who contributed to the scout team at the position before moving to linebacker in the spring. "I like being back there.''
