National-Peanut-Brittle-Day-January-26-1024x512.jpg

Welcome to National Peanut Brittle Day!

It’s National Peanut Brittle Day! Brittle was one of the first types of candy ever made. Many ancient cultures that had access to molasses, honey, or sugar, produced some form of it.

The first peanut brittle recipe appeared in an American cookbook, but the exact origin of the confection is uncertain. According to one account, peanut brittle was a Celtic dessert. The Celts covered peanuts in sugar and baked them, and this eventually evolved into a caramel bark.

Peanut brittle can be a little tricky to make. Most recipes call for a candy thermometer to allow the baker to regulate the exact temperature, and the results can be affected by weather! If brittle is made on a humid day it will not hold its shape.

To celebrate National Peanut Brittle Day, try making your own brittle or pick some up at your favorite candy shop!

Verbals Indicate SU Football Recruiting Headed Upwards (the juice; Bierman)

As of Monday evening the number of verbal recruits in Dino Babers first Syracuse recruiting class had swelled to 21, the approximate number of scholarships open for the 2016 class, a give and take depending on the final number of returnees that keep existing scholarships or stay with the program through the off season.

That number includes a handful of players initially wooed to wearing orange by Scott Shafer’s staff, including highly regarded prospects quarterback Rex Culpepper and running back/athlete Moe Neal who were among three recruits to enroll for the spring semester this month, part of a ‘Cuse class that will be the second unit to take advantage of the indoor practice field at the Ensley Athletic Center during the next couple of winter months. That will be the base period to learn the new styles of play on both sides of the line of scrimmage, and the conditioning required to play “Babers Ball” at a speed we’ve been promised we’ve never seen before by the man himself during his Dec. initial bow.

What’s been eye opening about the wave of activity over the past seven weeks, including a 31 day dormant (dead) period which ended Jan. 13, has been the number of players who have committed to Syracuse after taking official visits this month, including eight over this past extended weekend, the nine Florida players who have verbally committed (or in Culpepper’s case enrolled) keeping up the success of a must-have recruiting state to compete with ACC speed, and the strategy paramount to recruiting at Syracuse for decades, find a player that fits a need athletically regardless of star status among the ubiquitous recruiting services, will handle his SU academic responsibilities maintaining at minimum a respectable GPA, and follow the rules while respectfully representing the program in the community, i.e. staying out of trouble.

The Recruiting Revolving Door Favors the Future (TNIAAM; Keeley)

Syracuse Orange fans are still feeling out Dino Babers and his regime, but after a weekend that saw a flurry of verbal commitments, there's no denying that the new guy in charge is already remaking the program in his image.

Saturday, Syracuse received verbals from three-star RB Jo-El Shaw, three star OL Michael Clark and two-star DT McKinley Williams. Early Sunday, commitments came in from three-star DB Evan Foster and three-star DE Jaquwan Nelson. Before the day was over, three-star S/WR Devin Butler and three-star S/OLB Rashad Smith had given their verbals as well.

Thanks to a slew of de-commitments in the weeks following Scott Shafer's firing, the Class of 2016 had dwindled down to just twelve players. After this weekend, that number has swelled all the way back up to 20.

This is as good a time as any to once again remind everyone that recruiting is a crapshoot, especially when you're talking about guys in the two/three-star range. That said, all signs point to Syracuse Football's 2016 Class being in much better shape now than it was a few weeks ago. Not just numbers-wise, but talent-wise as well.

This is not to trash the guys who have left the program. They are wished well today just as much today as they were when they were supposed to wear platinum orange. But looking at this as a numbers game, you can make a strong case that SU Football recruiting is reaching higher and pulling in more talent now than it was under Shafer (even with a very small sample size).

One way we can figure out the value difference is to see where SU's de-commitments end up. Some of them have already found new homes, including Will Harper (Tulane), Darius Stubbs (Georgia State), Taylor Riggins (UMass), Sadiq Palmer (UMass) Noel Brouse (UConn) and Cam DeGeorge (UConn, flipped from Villanova). On paper, all of those programs would be considered "lesser" than Syracuse, at least in terms of stature and visibility. That's not to say these guys can't be successful, but it is what it is.

Illinois Recruiting Meltdown Continues (news-gazette.com; Daniels)

The roster shakeup for Illinois football in 2016 continued Monday.

Defensive tackle Antonio Shelton from Westerville (Ohio), who committed to Illinois in late June, and linebacker Tim Walton from Detroit Cass Tech, who committed to Illinois in mid-August, both decommitted Monday from Bill Cubit’s program.

“First, I want to thank all my coaches and family for their continued guidance,” Walton wrote in a Twitter post Monday afternoon. “I want to thank the coaches and staff (at the) University of Illinois for believing in me and giving me an opportunity to play in the (Big Ten). I also want to thank all of the fans of Illinois for their support and belief as well.

“However, after talking and praying with the people who mean the most to me, I’ve decided to decommit from University of Illinois. I pray and wish all the best of luck to Coach Cubit, (linebackers) Coach (Tim) McGarigle and the whole Illini staff and players this season.”

The 6-foot-2, 224-pound Walton, who told The News-Gazette his decision had nothing to do with academics, and Shelton make it four 2016 prospects who have decommited from Illinois in the last week, joining O’Fallon running back Kentrail Moran and Machesney Park Harlem defensive end Joshua Black.

Black announced Monday morning he was committing to Syracuse, where former Bowling Green and Eastern Illinois coach Dino Babers was recently hired. Walton visited Syracuse this past weekend.
Shelton (6-3, 275) used Twitter to announce his decommitment on Monday evening.

We might be doing similar things with our coming renovation of the Carrier Dome...
How times have changed in Arkasas. I remember when I lived there in the early 80s and they split the home games between the two campuses.
