Welcome to National Letter of Intent Day (Football)!

The National Letter of Intent (NLI) is a document used to indicate a student athlete's commitment to participating National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) colleges and universities in the United States. The NCAA Eligibility Center manages the daily operations of the NLI program while the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) provides governance oversight of the program. Started in 1964 with seven conferences and eight independent institutions, the program now includes 676 Division I and II participating institutions. There are designated dates for different sports, and these dates are commonly referred to as "Signing Day".

Division III institutions are specifically banned from using the NLI, or any similar document that is not executed by non-athletes at those institutions.[1]

NLIs are typically faxed by the recruited student to the university's athletic department on a National Signing Day.[2] The NLI is a voluntary program with regard to both institutions and student-athletes. No prospective student-athlete or parent is required to sign the National Letter of Intent, and no institution is required to join the program.

What to Know About Syracuse Football's Class of 2016 (DO; Schwedelson)

With National Signing Day upon us, it’s time to look back on the ups and downs of Syracuse’s 2016 recruiting cycle. Players that did not enroll for the spring semester can turn their verbal commitment official on Wednesday by signing paperwork to join the Orange.

Here are five things to know about Syracuse’s 2016 recruiting class.

The shakeup

Following head coach Dino Babers’ hiring, Syracuse’s 2016 recruiting class shook significantly. At the time of Scott Shafer’s firing, 16 players were committed to the Orange. None decommitted while SU was in search of a new coach, but after Dec. 5, when Babers took over, 11 players left the class. That number includes Sadiq Palmer, whose offer was pulled due to academics, and Taylor Riggins, who was reportedly told the new staff wouldn’t have a spot for him.

Profile on 3-Star LB Kenneth Ruff, Who Flipped to Syracuse From Virginia (TNIAAM; Keeley)

Former Virginia RB coach and current Maryland RB coach Chris Beatty's brief stay with the Syracuse Orange paid at least one dividend when he got Kenneth Ruff to flip from the Cavs to the Orange. Ruff arrived on campus a couple weeks back so he doesn't have to fax anything today, but we acknowledge his arrival all the same.

2018 quarterback DeJuan Ellis tweeted on Monday evening that he had received an offer from Syracuse. The Bishop (Va.) O’Connell prospect also has offers from Maryland and Temple.

With defensive end Jaquwan Nelson’s commitment with Syracuse in limbo and the Orange losing out on Josh White to Georgia Tech on Monday, the staff is turning to other options.
