Has anyone started paying attention to gymnastics leading up to the Olympics yet?

Since it's been on NBC this weekend, yes. Before that, no. The women's Olympic trials come up in a couple weeks, I'll watch that some.

Was it your first time seeing Simone Biles?

I've seen her once or twice before, she's tremendous.

I enjoy watching gymnastics, especially women's gymnastics, leading up to the Olympics and of course the Games themselves. In non-Olympic years I'll watch a little bit of the major championships sometimes, the US and the World.

Cool. They are going to pick the women's team in a couple of weeks. I follow the sport fairly closely and to know what kind of pressure these girls are under is unbelievable. It is amazing what they can do.

Definitely is pressure-packed. You've got to be athletic, precise, under control, and no one else to blame if you fail with an injury always a very real possibility. Gotta respect what the ladies, and guys, do.

Absolutely. Did you see the girl split the beam?

Yes I did, that had to hurt. She went on like a trooper though and after she finished seemed to be alright.

Yes, that was a really rough beam routine. My daughter missed on a back tuck on beam last week, and she has been in pain all week. And she never misses those.

Seems like the beam is where most injuries happen. Four inches - I think it's four - isn't a very forgiving landing area.

Yeah, it is four inches and it is amazing what these girls do on it. When they show the slow motion shots, watch their feet, they are gripping the beam with their feet. I have worked meets and I watch the level 10's up close and it is amazing. Unfortunately, girls get hurt in all events, it is a brutal sport.

Yeah, they got monkey feet.

Off to bed for me, I hope your daughter feels better soon.

Thanks, she is tough, as they all are. Not the first time, and won't be the last. I am just glad they televise all these meets before the Olympics, because she can't get enough of it.

Just a heads up for anyone that wants to see who is going to be on the US Olympic Team. The final competition starts tonight at 9pm on NBC. The competition continues on Sunday at 8:30pm also on NBC. The team will be selected at the conclusion of Sunday nights competition. The US is head and shoulders above other countries at this point, so this competition promises to be very intense as these young women try to find their place on the Olympic team. Simone Biles is a shoe in, as is Aly Raisman. Gabby Douglas looks to rebound after a subpar performance at Nationals, but she should be solid. The other two spots are hotly contested. Laurie Hernandez has come on and looks to be in good shape. Final spot will probably go to a bar specialist, probably between Madison Kocian and Ashton Locklear, they are both strong on bars (the lone weakness for team USA), but it will likely be a strong second event that gets one on the team and the other as an alternate.

Obliterata, do you or anyone else want to see my daughter's vault?

I only watch during the Olympics and my eyes are closed 80% of the time. Terrifying sport especially with how young most of the competitors are.

I never paid all that much attention to the sport until my daughter got in to it. Since then it has been quite the ride. The higher you go in the sport, the more injuries you see. When my daughter was 9 she missed on doing her aerial on the beam and banged into the beam pretty hard at a competition. It was scary to watch, and I didn't know what to do. Luckily it was just a bruise and scraped up leg.

Unfortunately I can't see it orange, the video's private. You'd have to make it public to be seen.

Oh ok, I will have to figure that out, I don't want it public on Youtube.

I don't think it can be viewed here if it's a private video on Youtube, only public videos can be seen by others. If you want to keep it private, that's fine.

Yup that's viewable. Your daughter did that very very well, that's plenty difficult as it is.

Thanks, I am proud of her. Vault has been her worst event historically.

Laurie Hernandez is from my town here in Jersey. I'll probably watch a bit of it because of her.
