So, Alaska's broke, which means the University of Alaska is also broke. We've taken drastic budget cuts the last few years, and FY18 doesn't look any better.

One of the hot topics when discussing how to reduce the Universities spending, is athletics. The BoR just approved a motion to "pursue with the NCAA a waiver from the requirement that each program field a minimum of ten teams or permission to form a consortium, combining the two programs into one with fewer teams overall."

Is this something that the NCAA has approved before?

The Univ of Alaska is division 2, correct?

We have two Division 1 hockey teams. One at UAA, one at UAF.

I believe our Rifle team is also D1. Everything else is D2

Correct. UAF is the pre-season #6 team in the country. WVU is #1, natch.

That Jan 10 2017 showdown WVU-UAF is gonna be a barn burner (maybe literally).

Wait, they actually give people from WV guns?

Is this waiver something that would improve the quality of the student athlete experience? If the answer is yes, then there is no way the NCAA is interested in getting involved.

Any chance we could fund a trip for both rifle teams to Indy?

It will be couch burner.

The Univ of Ak Nordic Ski teams are top notch, not to mention biathalon.

Modern Alaska runs on oil. We are broke in terms of current revenue but the state has savings from prior surpluses. The financial future depends on the price of oil. National politics has classified the North Slope so as to prevent drilling. Caribou actually prefer the pipeline. It gives off heat.

Until the pipeline bursts.

I've always heard the big grudge match is WVU-NC State. Could easily be wrong, though.

This paper has good evidence that the pipeline is pretty bad for caribou: https://www.researchgate.net/profil...activities/links/556633bd08aefcb861d1982c.pdf
That article says nothing that would lead to the conclusion that the pipeline inhibits caribou. The Porcupine Caribou herd is as strong as ever. They prefer to be close to the line for its heat. The line is elevated in the arctic. They can pass right under it. Wild animals are not frightened by static objects. Lets suppose, for the sake of argument, that the pipeline is bad for caribou. Would you rather have low energy prices or be at the mercy of countries that hate us? ANWR is now the equivalent of a National Park. Not even test drilling is allowed. Is that not crazy? What area of the world is more isolated and inhospitable to people than the N Slope where the ground is permafrost. Have you ever been in tundra? Have you ever tried to walk through tussocks laced with icy surface water?

Does AK still do the Permanent Fund Dividend thing?

Sounds like it's working out...
It will be down to about $1,000 this year but there is a law suit. It would have been higher except that the Governor is tapping it to help balance the budget.

"On calving grounds, caribou were deflected by pipeline berms greater than 1.5m above ground level because berms presumably served as visual barriers (Hanson 1981)" "Cow caribou distribution shifted away from pipelines, roads and associated traffic during calving (Cameron & Whitten 1979; Dau & Cameron 1986; Lawhead 1988; Cameron, Reed et al. 1992) even though vehicular traffic on the study area road was limited (100 200 vehicles/day) (Cameron, Reed et al. 1992)" "Most(77-85%)caribou avoided expenmental pipeline structures on the calving ground in summer (Child 1973)."

You can make the foreign oil argument all you want, but I had a hard time concluding that caribou like pipelines.

You guys must get sick of non-Alaskans telling you how to run your state.
