A hitter surpassed only by Pete Rose IMHO, he is still the ultimate technician. He was a hitter's hitter when he played. Rose may have had better instincts, but Carew was smarter, adjusted better, and could hit darn near anything. Today, he'd eat the shift - if anyone was silly enough to play it against him. He was Willie Mosconi with a bat.

Rod Carew, an international treasure who ranks as one of the greatest living hitters, underwent 13 hours of surgery Friday. Doctors gave the 71-year-old Hall of Famer a heart and kidney transplant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and there's hope he will make a full recovery.
