HBO has got a new documentary coming out about an interracial couple in Virginia who were arrested for getting married back in 1967. As hard as it is to be a gay couple it is hard to compare it to interracial marriages imo. There certainly are some similarities but interracial couples were not only shunned from society but had a real threat of violence.
I know from experience close to me that members of the biracial union can be ostracized after their marriage. Its the y way things were not that long ago.
I wish I had HBO so I can watch this. Is anyone on here, besides myself, in an interracial marriage? I think those who are not would be very surprised by how much animosity still exists towards interracial couples. It's not nearly as vehement and obvious but it's still around. It's pretty easy to spot those who disapprove (not that their approval means diddly to us) by the look on their faces. Most try to hide it immediately but it's hard to miss. And then you have the morons who stare or make noises under their breath. And every waitress/waiter on the planet will ask you "is this together?" right after you ask for the check. And then there was the blue blood old bitty in Williamsburg who, when my African American wife and I walked into her church in Colonial Williamsburg, looked like she had seen the ghost of white Jesus himself. My wife walked right up to her and started peppering her with questions about the church. She could barely conceal her contempt for us during the conversation.
I am not in an interracial marriage, but some of my friends are. They have experienced what you have stated. I'm sorry you have had to experience this and most sorry that you have undoubtedly experienced this from people who claim to believe in Jesus.
my wife is 100% irish and I'm only half irish. does that count? do you live in williamsburg or were you just visiting?
I think it's really a generational thing more than anything. I am very confident and optimistic that each generation is less racist and homophobic than the generation before it. My cousin married an African-American man about 5 years ago, and at first it made the elderly generation in my family (Italians from Solvay) VERY uncomfortable. But, very soon they realized how wonderful of a person he is and our respective families have been seamlessly united.
At the time I was still active duty living in Virginia Beach and we just went up for a weekend visit.
rex chapman used to get death threats at UK for having a black girlfriend. now I know we are talking about civilized societies and kentucky really does not fit the criteria but I thought I'd just throw that out there.
The UK athletic department and basketball people also "encouraged" him to not date black girls. I don't know if the university has changed at all but the rest of Klantucky hasn't changed much. Witness the mixed couple that was voted out of their church congregation late last year.
One of the funnier Republican talking points is that all of the real racism is in the North. But, strangely, whenever some black dude gets drug behind a truck or some local government refuses a marriage license to an interracial couple, it never seems to happen in Worcester, Massachusetts or Poughkeepsie, New York. -exits
Louis CK on gay marriage: "It doesn’t have any effect on your life. What do you care? People try to talk about it like it’s a social issue. Like when you see someone stand up on a talk show and say “How am I supposed to explain to my child that two men are getting married? I dunno, it’s your ****-y kid, you fu-king tell them. Why is that anyone else’s problem? Two guys are in love but they can’t get married because you don’t want to talk to your ugly child for fu-king five minutes?"
We all know that SU was that kind of institution that discouraged black athletes from dating white girls. AKA Jim Brown and others. Its a long gone discrimination issue as will be the marrying of gay individuals in the future.Conservatives will not win this. People are people and deserve whatever protection from other people as much as what the law can provide for freedoms regarding social issues. I know a mixed race couple in NJ who are distantly related and they have three beautiful children. One is a walk -on at Rutgers football. I never said perfect kids . He got a look-at by SU but thats as far as it went. I'm very OK with that. I've never seen him play but he knew David Tyree and some others coming out of Montclair NJ.
I have lived in both the north and the south. For just about 20 years each. I can honestly say I know just as many rednecks and racists in upstate NY that I do down south. The only real difference to me was they don't try to hide it down south like they do up north.
That might be true, but in my opinion on the topic of racism, trying to hide it is probably a pretty good thing. -exits
it's kinda like spencer tracy and oregon boisenberry.the fear of the unknown. turns out it ain't so bad after all.
This is the truth. Some of the most ignorant treatment the wife and I have received was in Liverpool. Down here in NC, you know where you are likely to be treated shabbily.
I can personally attest to racism first hand in good old alexandria bay new york where i was routinely called "nigger"..and im not even black or brown..
