the Fagan article said 5 January enrollees. So looks like we could shoot for 29 total.

I don't think 5 Jan enrollees means that we have room to back date all 5. Maybe the other two go against 2017's numbers?

Here's your class of 2016:

Rex Culpepper (Jan 2016)
Scoop Bradshaw
Sam Heckel
Moe Neal (Jan 2016)
Airon Servais
Kenneth Ruff (Jan 2016)
Liam O'Sullivan
Carl Jones
Kendall Coleman
Sean Riley
Devon Clarke
Andrew Armstrong
Michael Clark
McKinley Williams
Evan Foster
Jaquwan Nelson
Devin Butler
Josh Black
Tim Walton
Amba Etta-Tawo
De'Jon Wilson

21 players.

Zach Mahoney was also given a scholarship. Since he was only at SU for 1 full season, he has to be counted.

Now we're at 22 players.

However, since we only used 24 scholarships in 2015, we can backdate one of the three Jan 2016 enrollees to 2015.

Now we're back to 21 players.

Which means we can backdate 4 recruits from this year's haul who enroll in Jan 2017.

4 + 25 = 29 total players we can take in the 2017 class.

And we have exactly 29 openings right now.

Don't you love it when a plan comes together.

I don't know how it works with Mahoney. The fact that he was already enrolled from the prior season.

If we can backdate all 5 it gives us 1 to pocket for next year. Otherwise (if things hold and 25 count for august 2017) we can't back date any Jan enrollees next year.

It doesn't matter that he was enrolled. He still received a scholarship in 2016.

As long as we get to four early ones, we'll max out what we can bring in - depending on qualifying issues and such.

That's all you can ask for.

15.5.6.3.6 Aid First Awarded After Second Year. [FBS/FCS]
A student-athlete who has been in residence at the certifying institution for at least two academic years may receive athletically related financial aid for the first time without such aid counting as an initial award, provided the aid falls within the overall grant limitation. (Adopted: 1/11/89, Revised: 1/10/90 effective 8/1/90)

Mahoney was only here for 1 year before getting the scholarship.

Had he been here for 2 full years, he wouldn't count against the 25. This is why you usually only see Senior walk-ons get scholarships if teams have room under the 85 limit.

We lose 13 Seniors after the 2017 season. I don't think we'll have to worry about exceeding the 25 player limit.

This is a good point. Next year should be the final year that we are lacking with scholarship players, which SHOULD make it more likely that we are able to redshirt the players that need a year to add strength.

Bodes well for the future.

This needs to be part of the Common Core curriculum.

Terrific summary.

And a primer on why some of the hand wringing about fishes and loaves is unnecessary. Always lots of unplanned attrition, and always wiggle room in terms of counting recruits against previous classes. Happy that we are able to bring in so many early enrollees to get to the max number this year. Not that all of the class of 2017 will be able to contribute in year 1, but it will be nice to have a full compliment of players at the coaching staff's disposal.

There will always be players who take their degrees and a few unexpected transfers. After the 1st full year with a new coach, there isn't much of a purge.

I get that. Just saying the transition time to fill a roster after a coaching change has taken longer than a year-plus cycle in the past. Appears to have happened much quicker this time around.
