PETER GUNN / MR LUCKY

Henry Mancini was a pianist and arranger from the Big Band Era, (Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman), who started composing for movies in the mid 1950’s, (Creature from the Black Lagoon, Touch of Evil). In 1958 he got together with writer Blake Edwards who was creating the seminal private eye series, Peter Gunn. Wikipedia: “This was the genesis of a relationship in which Edwards and Mancini collaborated on 30 films over 35 years. Along with Alex North, Elmer Bernstein, Leith Stevens and Johnny Mandel, Henry Mancini was a pioneer of the inclusion of jazz elements in the late romantic orchestral film and TV scoring prevalent at the time.” Mancini won the first ever Grammy album of the year for his LP of the Peter Gunn music:

The again collaborated on 1959’s “Mr. Lucky”, based on a 1943 Cary Grant movie about a man who runs a gambling house on a boat just beyond the limits of the law. The score Henry wrote for this one, using an organ to play jazz, defines the word “breezy”:

I guarantee whatever mood you are in when you click on it, you’ll feel better after listening to it.

Mancini went on to write classic themes and scores for films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, The Pink Panther and Two for the Road, among others. But Peter Gunn was hais first big splash. He also wrote the theme for the NBC Mystery Movie:
