Lake Placid Summit Classic: Day 4 Photos and Notes (IL)

The other two top Master’s 1 teams are looking like Burnt Orange and Motive Pure/Force 5, both easy winners in their Thursday openers. Roy Colsey, who missed last year’s tournament, scored on his first four shots and finished with at least five goals for Burnt Orange, 12-5 winners over the Le Moyne Dolphins. Burnt Orange’s D includes Pat McCabe, John Glatzel, Ric Beardsley, Jay Abendroth and Chris McCartan, Colsey, Sean Lindsay and Tim Byrnes were running midfield and Liam Banks, Ryan Powell and Paul Carcaterra manned the attack. Powell was riding like a maniac (the debate of who's the best Powell might pale in comparison to who's the best rider among the Powells), and I also saw Banks send a sweet feed inside that Beardsley caught low and finished high with his longpole.

Lake Placid Summit Classic: Day 5 Gear, Sights, More (IL)

Friday welcomed in perfect weather in the High Peaks region for the 25th Lake Placid Summit Classic for Day 5 from Lake Placid, N.Y. The beginning of the Men’s Open divisions highlighted the day’s action, along with a big upset in the Men’s Master’s 1 group, with the Gray’d Danes knocking off the Burnt Orange 7-5 to advance to Saturday’s Semifinals.

The talent in the Men’s Open 1 division has gotten better every year over the past 5-6 years, and the playoffs Saturday should see some phenomenal games. In one of the best games of the tournament, the Select Sector SPDRs took out the Burning Orange in OT, 13-12. Princeton’s Jake Froccaro (3G) scored late to tie the game and then ripped the game-winner in OT to give the SPRDs the win, after they relinquished an 8-2 lead to the Syracuse group. Maryland’s Joe Leonard had two goals, while face-off man Trevor Baptiste (rising freshman at Denver), Matt Kavanagh (Notre Dame) and goalie Kyle Bernlohr (Maryland) also played well. Mike Leveille and Chris Daniello had four goals apiece for the Burning Orange, who also featured Jovan Miller and Dan Hardy, among a host of other Syracuse stars.
