Syracuse still cannot counted out.
Syracuse entered Saturday with four losses in five games. It hadn't lost five out of six in a single season since 1975. And North Carolina rolled into the Carrier Dome coming off defeats of Duke and Virginia and suddenly well-positioned to solidify its own postseason prospects.
So naturally the Orange earned a 13-7 victory, winning two-thirds of its faceoffs and making a third of its shots along the way. Syracuse was deft on extra-man (2-for-2), didn't commit a penalty and received a decent showing on defense to overcome a turnover-happy performance.
The Orange (7-4, 2-2) should win at least two more games (Binghamton and Colgate), and its offense remains strong enough so long as there's hope — which there wasn't in a blowout loss to Notre Dame — to be a nuisance to anyone in the ACC. Saturday might have been a hint Syracuse will be a tough out in the league tournament, and perhaps next month as well so long as things fall in its favor.
